Mourinho misery extends United’s woes in post-Ferguson era

sports December 18, 2018 20:24

By AFP

Watching on at Anfield as Manchester United meekly surrendered 3-1 to Liverpool in what proved to be Jose Mourinho’s last match in charge, Alex Ferguson was caught shaking his head at the sight of what the empire he built has become.

For the fourth time since Ferguson retired in 2013 after nearly 27 years in charge, with 13 Premier League titles under his belt, United are looking for a new manager.

The volatile Mourinho was largely the author of his own downfall. He leaves the world’s richest club 19 points off the top of the Premier League and with an almighty struggle just to qualify for next season’s Champions League with a top-four finish.

But his departure should sound alarm bells for United’s American owners, the Glazer family, as they struggle to find a manager capable of following in Ferguson’s footsteps.

The fiery Scotsman signed off by winning the league. In the five years since, United have not even been in contention to win the title.

Replacing one of the all-time greats was never going to be an easy task but even Ferguson, who also led United to two Champions League crowns, five FA Cups and four League Cups, would never have dreamed it would prove such a poisoned chalice.

As a fellow Glaswegian whose relative success on a limited budget at Everton evoked memories of Ferguson’s breakthrough years with Aberdeen, David Moyes apparently had the skillset and background to follow his compatriot’s template in Manchester.

But after Ferguson anointed him as his hand-picked replacement, Moyes proved completely out of his depth and lasted just 10 months of his six-year contract.

Moyes’s penchant for conservative tactics, dour training sessions and a lack of man-management skills might seem familiar to members of the current United squad, who grew sick of Mourinho’s acerbic personality.

By the time United were ruled out of qualifying for the Champions League, the writing was on the wall for Moyes, whose sacking in April 2014 made his the shortest United managerial reign for 82 years.

Autocratic Dutchman Louis van Gaal was also a poor fit despite his impressive pedigree with Barcelona and Ajax. His football was too one-paced and predictable for fans fed on Ferguson’s aggressive approach for so long.

Returning United to the Champions League with a top-four finish in his first season bought Van Gaal some time, but the only standard that matters at Old Trafford is winning the title.

When they laboured to a fifth place finish 12 months later, even United’s FA Cup final win against Crystal Palace was not enough to spare Van Gaal.

– ‘Whole club needs resetting’ –

Mourinho’s self-proclaimed status as a serial trophy winner made him the obvious choice to take a role he had long regarded as his dream job.

But the siege mentality that helped Mourinho inspire his players to remarkable success at Porto, Chelsea and Inter Milan was no longer such a convincing act for the pampered millionaires that inhabit the Old Trafford dressing room.

Although Mourinho won the League Cup and Europa League in his first season, United finished a dismal sixth in the Premier League.

It did not help that Mourinho’s dour game-plans in a trophy-less second season contrasted so sharply with Pep Guardiola’s stylish and successful Manchester City side, who romped to the title with a record 100 points.

And at Liverpool, Jurgen Klopp has woken a sleeping giant and put them in contention for a first league title since 1990, adding defensive steel to attacking flair.

Guardiola and Klopp were both on the market in the post-Ferguson era and passed United by.

The club stated on Tuesday that time will be taken to find a successor, with a caretaker put in charge for the rest of the season.

But there are concerns over who will make that decision, with the club increasingly obsessed with commercial interests rather than winning on the pitch.

“There’s a multitude of issues, it’s more complex than the manager getting the best out of the players or not being backed. It’s a deep problem, it needs resetting, the whole club needs resetting,” said former United captain Gary Neville said on Sunday.

“Five years ago, two huge figures (Ferguson and former chief executive David Gill) left that football club, two figures that had great knowledge of the game.

“What happened was the financial and commercial people, that are fantastic at their jobs, were put in charge of the football side of things and they are not competent enough to do it.

“They have to now hand it over to people that are good enough to run the football side of the club.”

Manchester United lose patience and sack Mourinho

sports December 18, 2018 20:13

By AFP

Manchester United have sacked manager Jose Mourinho after their worst start to a season in almost 30 years, the club announced on Tuesday.

The 55-year-old Portuguese’s last match in charge was the 3-1 defeat by Premier League leaders Liverpool on Sunday which left them 19 points behind their opponents.

Mourinho’s sacking comes just two-and-a-half years into his tenure and three years and a day since Chelsea sacked him just months after he had guided them to the title.

Former player Michael Carrick, now a member of the coaching staff, is expected to take charge in an interim role but United said a caretaker manager will be appointed until the end of the season.

The club’s worst start in the league since 1990 means even Mourinho’s ambition of reaching the top four and a Champions League qualification spot is in danger.

Despite United reaching the Champions League knockout stages — they face an intimidating last-16 tie with Paris Saint-Germain — a mix of the results, dressing-room discord and criticism of the board’s transfer policy proved potent factors in the decision to dismiss him.

A United source told AFP that Mourinho had been supported in his efforts to sign players and described reports of player power at the club as being key to the sacking as wide of the mark.

According to British media reports, United will have to pay Mourinho £22.5 million ($28 million) — as the club are still in the Champions League — to sever the ties.

“Manchester United announces that manager Jose Mourinho has left the club with immediate effect,” a club statement said.

“The club would like to thank Jose for his work during his time at Manchester United and to wish him success in the future.

“A new caretaker manager will be appointed until the end of the current season, while the club conducts a thorough recruitment process for a new, full-time manager.”

Carrick is favoured for the caretaker role having become part of the coaching staff this season.

– ‘Outstanding candidate’ –

In the longer term former Real Madrid coach Zinedine Zidane has been linked to the club and Tottenham Hotspur manager Mauricio Pochettino could also be a name in the frame.

One bookmaker makes Pochettino the early favourite and the 46-year-old Argentinian is also former Manchester United midfielder Gary Neville’s favoured option.

“They need someone who meets the three key principles of that football club: the promotion of youth, entertaining football and to win football matches,” Neville told Sky Sports News.

“People suggest he (Pochettino) hasn’t won a trophy yet at Tottenham but with a net spend of minus £29 million or something over the last four years, I’m not sure he could have done more.

“I do think he is the person who is the outstanding candidate.”

Mourinho’s reign had started well enough with the League Cup and the Europa League trophies but for a club that has been champions of England 20 times, neighbours Manchester City’s dominance over them in the league has hurt.

The wound went even deeper for Mourinho as City are managed by Pep Guardiola, who got the better of him when he was in charge at Barcelona and Mourinho was at Real Madrid.

However, despite his protestations to the contrary the United board gave Mourinho plenty of money to compete.

Top-quality players such as Belgian striker Romelu Lukaku — who he persuaded to come to United and not Chelsea for £75 million in 2017 — and Paul Pogba for a then world record fee of £89 million in 2016 have floundered under his authoritarian stewardship.

Indeed it was his deteriorating relationship with World Cup-winning midfielder Pogba — one of many to feel the lash of his tongue in public — that symbolised the decline at the club under him.

Mourinho questioned his attitude while the player hit back with open criticism of the tactics, culminating in him kicking his heels on the bench during the Liverpool debacle on Sunday.

The manager’s overall EPL points haul of 176 since his appointment by United lagged behind City, Liverpool, Tottenham and Chelsea during the same period.

Andy Mitten, editor of fanzine United We Stand, told BBC Radio that neither the players nor the fans would miss Mourinho.

“We’ve been doing polls where 80 percent of fans wanted him to leave,” said Mitten.

“He had a very good first season, an acceptable second season, but this season has been a disaster.”

Liverpool draw Bayern as United face PSG in Champions League last 16

Liverpool will take on fellow five-time winners Bayern Munich in the last 16 of the Champions League, while Jose Mourinho’s struggling Manchester United face French giants Paris Saint-Germain.

Holders Real Madrid were paired with Ajax in Monday’s draw in Nyon as the Spaniards attempt to lift the trophy for the fifth time in six seasons, while Lionel Messi and Barcelona will play Lyon.

Both Liverpool and Bayern have a rich tradition in the competition, with Jurgen Klopp returning to his homeland to face the side that beat his Borussia Dortmund team in the 2013 final.

Liverpool, defeated finalists last season, are the current form side of the two and sit top of the Premier League while Bayern have been far short of their own high standards in the Bundesliga this term.

“That’s the team of the hour, the league leaders in England, they are playing really good football, very physical, really stepping it up. We are looking forward to it,” Bayern sporting director Hasan Salihamidzic said of the tie with Liverpool.

“A tough cookie, but that’s something to look forward to as a player.”

Klopp said: “It will be a tough one, an interesting one, and I am looking forward to it.”

– Ronaldo awaits –

Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City take on German side Schalke 04 while Atletico Madrid, runners-up in 2014 and 2016, come up against Cristiano Ronaldo and Italian heavyweights Juventus.

“A very difficult match, with few goals,” Juve vice-president Pavel Nedved predicted.

“No doubt Cristiano is the man of the Champions League, he has always shown that, with goals and victories. Our team is very strong and we can be calm and confident.”

Bundesliga leaders Dortmund will meet Tottenham Hotspur for the second season in a row, having faced each other in last year’s group stage, while Roma meet two-time former champions Porto.

“We’ve already met them (Tottenham) twice. A strong opponent, the chances are at 50-50. The team has top players. We are also strong, it will be interesting,” Dortmund CEO Hans-Joachim Watzke told Sky.

United, at a low ebb after Sunday’s 3-1 defeat to Liverpool, meet PSG for the first time and a formidable task awaits against a side featuring Neymar and Kylian Mbappe — the world’s two most expensive players.

“It’s always difficult to play Manchester United,” said PSG boss Thomas Tuchel.

“They have lots of experience in this competition, they’ve won it numerous times. It’s always difficult to play at Old Trafford, it’s always a big challenge.

“It’s the same thing against Mourinho. He has lots of experience in this competition and you must have respect,” he added.

The Red Devils have only managed one win in four fixtures in December but the club’s former player Dennis Irwin says there’s plenty of time to improve ahead of facing the French champions.

“There’s two months to go, hopefully we can pick up some form before that,” he told broadcaster BT Sport

“The last month or so has been sticky for us. We have to concentrate on the Premier League now and the FA Cup in January,” he added.

– ‘Winter break’ boost –

Manchester City’s director of football Txiki Begiristain warned the English champions will not have it easy against a Schalke outfit languishing in 13th place in Germany following a nightmare start.

“Teams that have been struggling in their leagues have still they’ve done very well in the Champions League,” said Begiristain.

“Schalke will be difficult. After a winter break, German clubs are always very dangerous.”

Lyon coach Bruno Genesio says his team can draw on their group-stage displays against City — a 2-1 away win and 2-2 home draw — ahead of their clash with five-time European champions Barca.

“We’ll need to pull off two big performances, in the first leg and in the return, but we can do it. We did it against City,” said Genesio.

“It’s tough. They are a team that Lyon has already played against but never beaten. Barca are more experienced and stronger but over two matches anything is possible,” Gerard Houllier, who holds an advisory role at the French club, told RMC Sport.

“The first match is key and we are playing at home. Barca are potential champions. We have nothing to lose. Everything is a bonus for Lyon.”

Teams that finished in second place in the group stage will host the first legs on February 12/13 and 19/20 with the return matches scheduled for March 5/6 and 12/13.

WTA confirms reforms for returning players’ rankings

sports December 18, 2018 06:26

By The Nation

A series of rule changes making it easier for women to return after pregnancy or injury was ratified on Monday by the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA).

Players making their way back to competition after being out for 52 weeks or longer will be able to use their previous ranking to enter 12 tournaments over a three-year period.

Serena Williams was at the centre of a controversy at the 2018 French Open as the former world number one was not given a seed status after missing more than a year of competition to give birth to a daughter.

But a month later, she was given a seeding of 25 for Wimbledon despite being ranked 181st in the world.

The WTA also announced women will be allowed to wear leggings or compression shorts without a skirt, dress or shorts over them.

Williams, who has 23 Grand Slam titles to her name raised eyebrows with an outfit dubbed as a ‘cat-suit’ at Rolland-Garros this year, and the French Open later said it would introduce a dress code.

Jakarta – John Catlin’s outstanding breakout year has not gone unnoticed by his peers, as he has been named the Players’ Player of the Year for the 2018 Asian Tour season.

The American golfer beat the likes of India’s Shubhankar Sharma, Thailand’s Kiradech Aphibarnrat, Korea’s Sanghyun Park and South Africa’s Justin Harding to win the award, which was presented by Dr Chris Gisi, Chief Executive Officer, Rolex Southeast Asia at the Asian Tour Gala Awards in Jakarta.

Catlin’s successful season marked an amazing turnaround since he lost his Tour card in 2016.

The 27-year-old made a career breakthrough in May when he won his maiden Asian Tour title at the Asia-Pacific Classic in China. Two months later, Catlin won his second Tour title at the Sarawak Championship in Malaysia and in October, he was victorious yet again at the Yeangder Tournament Players Championship in Chinese Taipei.

With that, Catlin became the 10th golfer in Tour history to win three times in a single season.

“It has been a special year. It’s always special to get into the winner’s circle and to do it multiple times is just unbelievable. Winning three times is very surreal,” he said.

Sharma clinched the number one spot on the Asian Tour Habitat for Humanity Standings with earnings of US$755,994. He became the fifth, and youngest Indian national to win the Order of Merit title.

Sanghyun Park was awarded the Rookie of the Year. The Korean was dominant at his home events, winning twice and finishing second in the three tournaments held in the Land of the Morning Calm. Park is placed second on the merit list with earnings of US$566,211.

Sri Lanka’s Anura Rohana was the most accurate off the tee (92%) while Mauritius Open champion Kurt Kitayama was the farthest (315.36 yards).

Thai Settee Prakongvech was the top scrambler after converting 69.8% of his missed greens in regulation to save par this season. Compatriot Thammanoon Sriroj was the hottest putter on Tour, averaging 26.4 putts per round.

Scott Vincent of Zimbabwe topped the birdie charts at 306. American Paul Peterson, who won his maiden Tour title at the LeoPalace21 Myanmar Open, hit the most greens-in-regulation (75%) while Australian Jake McLeod had the lowest stroke average (69.04)

ASIA’S NUMBER ONE SHARMA FINDS SUCCESS WITH FAMILY BY HIS SIDE

Jakarta – As they say, home is where the heart is and for newly-crowned Asian Tour Order of Merit winner Shubhankar Sharma, home, and a loving family inspired him to a wildly successful 2018.

The 22-year-old Indian secured his top spot on the Asian Tour Habitat for Humanity Standings following the proceedings at the South African Open to cap off a brilliant year.

He said: “2018 is the year that I’ll remember for the rest of my life. I’ve played all the Majors, all the WGCs and won the Arjuna Award as well as the Asian Tour Order of Merit.

“I’ve always dreamt of winning the Order of Merit since turning professional in 2013. I used to watch the Asian Tour on TV, seeing the likes of Jyoti Randhawa, Arjun Atwal, Jeev Milkha Singh and Anirban Lahiri, who have all won the merit title. I am honoured to be part of that illustrious list.”

His victory at the Maybank Championship in February was undoubtedly pivotal to him winning the merit title and unsurprisingly, that particular tournament stood out for him the most.

“The most memorable moment for me this year was winning the Maybank Championship. That started things off for me,” explained Sharma, with a smile.

Sharma credits his success to his family, who have given him unconditional support on and off the golf course. They accompanied him on his Major debut at the Masters. Their presence kept him grounded and lifted him spiritually.

“I’m really happy that the whole family enjoyed themselves at Augusta National. My sister, whom I share a very close bond with, wrote a piece to Associated Press documenting my journey. I’m very glad she’s recognised for her talent.”

He added: “My family has always supported me. You always need a team; you can’t do it alone.

“They’ve been there ever since I started golf. It has been a great deal for them; it was good news after good news. Everyone was glued onto the TV if they are not on the course. I owe a lot of my success to my family.”

With the coming to an end, Sharma has already set his sights on accomplishing even greater goals in 2019.

“Playing in all four Majors again will be my number one goal. I am also aiming to play well in Europe and finishing in the Race to Dubai in a strong position.”

He may be competing all over the world, but he will always keep the Asian Tour in mind.

“I’ll definitely support the Asian Tour as much as I can. This is my home, and this is where I started playing.”

Liverpool back on top as Shaqiri sinks United, Arsenal’s unbeaten run ends

Liverpool powered back to the top of the Premier League as Xherdan Shaqiri inspired a 3-1 win over bitter rivals Manchester United, while Arsenal’s 22-match unbeaten run was shattered by a shock defeat at Southampton on Sunday.

Jurgen Klopp’s side made it six successive league victories thanks to Shaqiri’s late double after United’s Jesse Lingard had cancelled out Sadio Mane’s opener at Anfield.

Shaqiri’s superb substitute cameo allowed Liverpool to reopen a one-point lead over second-placed Manchester City after the champions had knocked the Reds off the summit with their win against Everton on Saturday.

Liverpool’s first win in their last six meetings with United ended a frustrating streak against the Old Trafford outfit that dated back to March 2016, while also extending their unbeaten start to the league season to 17 matches.

While that was cause for pre-Christmas revelry on the Kop, more significantly, Liverpool’s refusal to be subdued by a United team set up by Jose Mourinho with five defenders was another statement of intent as they chase a first English league title since 1990.

“The way the boys played and fought was outstanding. We saw the line up of United, how organised they were and they fight from the back. I’m over the moon about the performance,” Klopp said.

“The timing of Shaqiri’s introduction was not too bad. We need somebody to score the goals.”

Of Liverpool’s title bid, Klopp added: “We know we are a good team. We had to prove it and keep on proving it.”

– Mane strikes –

Senegal winger Mane put Liverpool ahead in the 24th minute when he broke away from Ashley Young to meet Fabinho’s sublime pass with a nimble piece of chest control before shooting past David De Gea.

United equalised against the run of play in the 33rd minute as Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson Becker made a hash of catching Romelu Lukaku’s low cross and Lingard finished off the rebound.

Alisson’s error didn’t prove costly as Switzerland midfielder Shaqiri struck within three minutes of coming off the bench, his shot flicking off the hapless Young into the roof of the net in the 73rd minute.

Shaqiri ensured Liverpool would return to the top in the 80th minute with a stinging strike that clipped the foot of United defender Eric Bailly on its way past De Gea.

United are now 19 points behind Liverpool in sixth place as the pressure mounts on Mourinho following another wretched display.

“We couldn’t cope with their fantastic intensity and pressing. They are the strong team, but it’s hard to concede two goals in the way we conceded,” Mourinho said.

“If you speak about fortunate you speak about their second and third goals.”

– Leno howler –

Meanwhile, Unai Emery admitted Arsenal need to fix their leaky defence after Southampton’s Charlie Austin punished a howler from Bernd Leno to stun the Gunners in a 3-2 victory.

Austin settled a thrilling clash at St Mary’s when he headed home with just five minutes left after Arsenal goalkeeper Leno misjudged Shane Long’s cross.

Southampton had twice taken the lead through Danny Ings, only for Henrikh Mkhitaryan’s brace to draw Arsenal level on each occasion.

Leno’s mistake handed Arsenal their first defeat in 15 league games and brought a stunning halt to their longest unbeaten run in all competitions since 2007.

Emery’s fifth-placed team had not lost since a 3-2 defeat at Chelsea in August and the north Londoners’ first setback since the close-season leaves them three points behind the fourth-placed Blues, who won 2-1 at Brighton on Sunday.

Conceding Arsenal need to tighten up at the back, Emery said: “We haven’t conceded a lot of chances but today they scored three goals. That is a lot so we need to improve with this.

“We need to do some analysis on how we can improve and do better.”

Chelsea put a week of negative headlines for the behaviour of their fans behind them on the field thanks to an inspired Eden Hazard at Brighton.

The Belgian provided his ninth assist of the season for Pedro to open the scoring and then chalked up his ninth goal of the campaign, but first in 13 games for club and country.

Solly March pulled one back with his first goal of the campaign, but Chelsea held on.

“He’s very able to come out and play with his team-mates, very able to create spaces. Now, in that position, he has to improve in attacking the box,” Sarri said of Hazard’s display as the spearhead of Chelsea’s attack.

Jose Mourinho hinted Manchester United’s players are simply not good enough to compete with Liverpool after being brushed aside 3-1 at Anfield on Sunday by the Premier League leaders.

Mourinho claimed ahead of the game that Liverpool have had luck on their side this season, but while there was fortune in substitute Xherdan Shaqiri’s two deflected strikes in the final 17 minutes, the visitors did not deserve anything more than a fifth league defeat of the season.

“The players gave everything and when they give everything I’m never upset with them. I have a good feeling towards them, they play in relation to their qualities, the same way the opponent played in relation to their qualities,” said Mourinho.

“They (Liverpool) are fast, intense, aggressive, physical, they play 200 miles per hour with the ball and without the ball.”

Mourinho also turned on his players’ injury record after having to name a patched up defence with Eric Bailly replacing Chris Smalling at the last minute after the latter picked up an injury in the warm-up.

“We have lots of problems related to physicality,” added Mourinho. “We have lots of players that I could consider injury problems, because some of our players are always injured.”

However, there will be little sympathy for the Portuguese’s protests as he left £89 million signing Paul Pogba on the bench for the full 90 minutes, while £50 summer recruit Fred didn’t even make the squad.

Victory took Liverpool back a point above Manchester City and a mammoth 19 clear of United, who remain in sixth and are now 11 points off the top four.

However, Mourinho insisted United can still qualify for next season’s Champions League.

“I know that we lost some other matches but we played Liverpool, Chelsea and Manchester City away, probably the three best teams apart from Tottenham,” he added. “I think we have more possibilities to do more points in the second half of the season than the first.”

– Liverpool lay seige –

The contrasting form showed by both sides this season continued as United strained to keep a rampant Liverpool at bay and were only level for so long thanks to a huge error by home goalkeeper Alisson Becker.

“You (the media) didn’t say too many nice things about them and good things about us. It was made for another result. We wanted to avoid that and we fought really hard,” said Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp.

Liverpool laid siege to the visitors’ goal early on with David de Gea stretching to keep out a low drive from Roberto Firmino, Ashley Young clearing off the line and Fabinho firing wide from the edge of the box.

“A brilliant start. One of the best performances we’ve had since I’ve been at Liverpool,” added Klopp. “The first half an hour was outstanding.”

Only City have kept Klopp’s side from scoring in the Premier League this season and a United defence that has kept just one clean sheet in the league since September never looked capable of holding out like they had in their two previous visits to Anfield.

Mourinho’s men were finally breached when Mane controlled Fabinho’s chipped ball into the box on his chest and volleyed past the onrushing De Gea on 24 minutes.

However, Liverpool’s momentum was punctured by an Alisson gift 12 minutes before the break.

The Brazilian was Liverpool’s hero with an injury-time save to secure the Reds’ place in the last 16 of the Champions League against Napoli on Tuesday.

But he spilled Romelu Lukaku’s simple cross into the path of the grateful Lingard to bundle the ball into an unguarded net.

The second half followed a similar pattern but it wasn’t until Klopp turned to Shaqiri 20 minutes from time that Liverpool found a way through.

Three minutes later De Gea did well to prevent Ander Herrera turning Mane’s cross into his own net, but the ball fell for Shaqiri and his effort cannoned off Young and in off the underside of the bar.

Shaqiri got lucky again with 10 minutes to go when, this time on his favoured left foot, his shot flicked off the diving Bailly to leave De Gea helpless.

WORLD No 1 golfer Ariya Jutanugarn beat soccer star Chanathip Songkrasin to win the Best Professional Athlete of the year at the annual Sports Authority of Thailand (SAT) awards yesterday.

The 22-year-old’s latest silverware comes after a year in which she swept every major golfing award – Player of the Year, No 1 player, Race to CME Globe (accumulated points), the Annika Major Award, LPGA Vare Trophy, Top 10 Leaders and No 1 on the Money List.
