Jürgen Klopp's verdict on Napoli 4-1 Liverpool

Jürgen Klopp’s Verdict On Napoli 4-1 Liverpool

BY LINE : THE NATION

THU, SEPTEMBER 08, 2022

Jürgen Klopp Offered A Frank Assessment Of His Team’s Performance As Liverpool Were Beaten 4-1 By Napoli In The Opening Game Of Champions League Group A On Wednesday Evening.

The Reds suffered a heavy defeat in Italy as the hosts raced into a three-goal lead by half-time, with Andre-Frank Zambo Anguissa and Giovanni Simeone adding to Piotr Zielinski’s early penalty.

Indeed, Napoli’s advantage could have been even greater but for Alisson Becker thwarting Victor Osimhen from the penalty spot.

Zielinski added a fourth for the home team immediately after the break – and though Luis Diaz reduced the arrears, the Reds were well beaten on the night.

Read on to see what Klopp had to say in his post-match press conference.

On saying sorry to the travelling Liverpool supporters at full-time

It’s a long flight from Liverpool to Napoli. For all the things they invest, I understand 100 per cent it was a very disappointing night so, of course, I put up [my hands], I have to say sorry for that.

On what he felt went wrong for his side

It’s obviously not the first time I have spoken to media so I have said it now a couple of times. I think the problems we had tonight were obvious. Number one, Napoli played a really good game and we played a really bad game. Why did we play a bad game? We cannot ignore the start and how it happened, how it started with the penalty and then shortly after that another penalty. In this atmosphere, that’s not easy, but our problems obviously were that we just didn’t play good enough. That means in our specific case we were never compact. I can’t remember a situation where we were compact. We had for 60 minutes not one counter-pressing situation in a game where we lost a lot of balls, just because we were far away.

That means we were too wide in possession, we were not pushing up with the last line, the midfield was not connected, so these are the football things and they are obvious. The questions now, because I know the boys want – they want to win football games – and the questions why they don’t do, that’s obviously my job to figure that out. It is not the first time that we don’t play completely well, I know that, and there are some reasons which we know, but I really think with all the things that happened we should have played a much better game tonight – and we didn’t. Again, it is my responsibility – it’s just the problem is since the game finished I spoke to media and I didn’t have time to think or whatever. I really think it makes sense to think a second longer, watch the game back, try to understand and then have the right message for the boys because that’s the most important thing.

On whether he needs to ‘reinvent’ the team

Look, how I said, you don’t think a lot after the game, you react more. So, when I said that it’s true, we definitely have to kind of reinvent ourselves because just basic things were not there. It is a difficult period, no doubt about that, but if you are not playing exceptionally well you still can defend on a really high level, we should be able to do that and we are, obviously, but in this moment we are, kind of, in between. The start of the game doesn’t help, so if we want to defend better, conceding a penalty after three minutes and the next one I don’t know exactly when… it’s obvious then you cannot exactly do that. So, it’s like you are in between, tonight we were caught in between, if you want.

But still, it’s a job to do and that’s what I mean, so that we have to reinvent a new kind of football. You always try to improve, but in this moment, obviously, everybody would be happy if you just could play similar stuff to what we used to play, let me say it like this. Tonight that was the least compact performance I saw for a long, long time from us and it was just, again, Napoli was really good, but we made it easy for them. We lost the ball in areas and then the next situation was a counter-attack, but that’s not how it should be. A few things are really clear. We have to change that and the reason why it’s now like this [is] getting a bit more clearer as well, but I need time for just saying the right things, not 100 per cent in the moment.

On whether a defensive high line was a ‘risk’ against Napoli…

The high line is a risk if you don’t get pressure on the ball and use it. If you have a high line and you don’t put any pressure on the guy on the ball then, yes, then it’s a risk. But that’s usually not the case, the problem is not the high line, we need a high line to be compact, the problem is we were never close enough to put the opponent under pressure.

English football club Chelsea have sacked their German head coach Thomas Tuchel.

New Chelsea owners fire coach Tuchel

The club on Wednesday decided to part ways with Tuchel after losing against Dinamo Zagreb in the UEFA Champions League.

The club released a statement that said: “On behalf of everyone at Chelsea FC, the club would like to place on record its gratitude to Thomas and his staff for all their efforts during their time with the club.”

Tuchel brought the club huge success with UEFA Champions League, UEFA Super Cup, and FIFA Club World Cup.

However, the club has earned only 10 points in six games in the 2022–23 Premier League with three wins, one draw, and two losses.

Chelsea FC also said: “As the new ownership group reaches 100 days since taking over the club, and as it continues its hard work to take the club forward, the new owners believe it is the right time to make this transition.“

The club said that the coaching staff will take charge of the training and the preparation for matches until the new head coach is appointed.

The club added that there would be no further comment until it appoints a new head coach.

Klopp angered by journalist’s Naples safety question

Liverpool manager Juergen Klopp took offence in his news conference ahead of his side’s Champions League match with Napoli when an Italian journalist questioned him about Liverpool’s warning to supporters in Naples about staying safe.

Klopp angered by journalist's Naples safety question

The German also gave an update about midfielder Thiago Alcantara who is available for Wednesday’s (September 7) Champions League Group A opener after returning to training following injury.

Journalist :  “Good evening this is not the first time you’ve come to Naples. I wanted to know whether you consider the city to be dangerous because today Liverpool’s social media accounts put out several messages telling their fans to be wary of the city and I wondered whether that’s been your experience whether you’d like to try and calm the fans down or whether you consider it to be a welcoming city?”

KLOPP : “That’s an embarrassing question from you, you want to create headlines? I really don’t understand it, Are you from Napoli (Naples)? Do you think it’s a dangerous city? I don’t know. I don’t live a normal life in Napoli. I’m protected here. I go to the hotel and now you ask me what I think about Napoli? You know exactly what people are talking about, if some supporters meet some supporters something can happen. That is nothing to do with the city, so, I don’t know but I’m not here to create headlines for you and if you don’t know what to ask anymore that’s no problem because I would love to go to the hotel to be honest and just concentrate on the game tomorrow and it looks like that you don’t know what to ask me any more because of the question. With aggression.”

“True did I ever win here? With Dortmund no, with Liverpool no, but I’m not sure we quite frequently qualified for the Champions league final after Napoli was with us in the group stage.”

“I’m not sure all the time but maybe at least twice if I’m right with Dortmund and one year with Liverpool maybe as well. But in Germany I’m a late bloomer, I need always a little bit longer to achieve my stuff and that means sometimes I have to try two times, sometimes three times, sometimes four times and Napoli obviously four times. What do we have to do? Play better than in the previous three games that would be very helpful because we didn’t play particularly well when we came here and because one reason, Napoli is pretty strong.”  Said KLOPP

But another midfielder, Jordan Henderson, is out after suffering a hamstring injury in last week’s win over Newcastle United.

The return of Spain international Thiago, who has not played since the opening day of the Premier League season, is a boost for Klopp who has had several players absent in the opening weeks of the campaign.

“Thiago, back in training, second day today. [It] means he is ready; for how long, we will see,” said Klopp.

Klopp said Henderson, however, would not be back until after this month’s international break.

Brazilian Arthur Melo, signed on loan from Juventus last week, could play some part in the game, said Klopp.

The Senegal forward, 30, spent 105 minutes – longer than it takes to play a full game – interacting with fans at his new club’s training facility in the south of the German city.

Mane joined Germany’s defending champions in June after leaving Liverpool for a fee of £35 million (1.49 billion baht).

Liverpool fans and media are blaming the team’s poor start to the season on Mane’s absence. The forward scored 120 goals in 269 appearances for the Reds, helping them win Premier League, Champions League, FA Cup, FIFA Club World Cup, EFL Cup, and UEFA Super Cup. He opened his account for Bayern in his debut match on July 30 with a goal in the 5–3 victory over RB Leipzig in the DFL-Supercup. He bagged his first Bundesliga goal a week later in the 6-1 win against Eintracht Frankfurt.

According to German tabloid Bild, the Senegal international spent one hour and 45 minutes meeting fans at Bayern Munich’s Säbener Strasse training ground on Sunday.

A smiling Mane gave selfies, signed an autograph, and even chatted with die-hard Bayern followers.

Liverpool FC have unveiled their new third kit – with a nod to Thailand – ahead of the opening match of their Champions League campaign this week.

The new teal-coloured kit takes inspiration from the flags and banners that fans have unfurled during famous victories in Europe for decades.

Liverpool kick off this season’s Champions League away to Napoli on Wednesday night (2am Thursday Thai time).

The club has also commissioned a custom-made banner by fan and flag-maker Mark Sweatman, which features 97 stars, representing each away victory or trophy win in Europe.

The new kit’s shirt features the 97 emblem encased by the Eternal Flames emblazoned on the nape of the neck in memory of those who lost their lives at Hillsborough.

Thailand is also woven into the fabric, with the “Side by Side” logo on the reverse marking the partnership between LFC Foundation and Right to Play. The “Side by Side” project uses the power of sport and play to help vulnerable children in Bangkok and Senegal.

TEN HAG SAVOURS VICTORY OVER ARSENAL

#SootinClaimon.Com : ขอบคุณแหล่งข้อมูล : หนังสือพิมพ์ The Nation.

https://www.nationthailand.com/life/sport/40019760

Erik ten Hag celebrated a huge victory over Arsenal, but hopes to get more out of his Manchester United side in the forthcoming fixtures.

TEN HAG SAVOURS VICTORY OVER ARSENAL

The Reds showed fighting spirit to pick up a 3-1 result against the Premier League leaders, with two goals from Marcus Rashford and an opener from debutant Antony.

Ten Hag was happy with the team’s win, but insists he is still looking for improvement, stating “good is not good enough.”

STARTED WELL

“I thought our start was really good. I think it was the best [first] ten minutes until now. We were really dominant in the opponents’ half. And then the cancelled goal from a little break, we had a little bit of losing composure and that’s not necessary. We have to get in the game, keep going, play our game and everyday we learn that. And as you saw, there was a good team on the pitch, good team spirit. Also with pressing, maybe not always the good routines, but they [the players] fought, they recovered. Arsenal created chances, but I think we also did, especially on the break. We scored great goals.”

WORRIED ABOUT ARSENAL’S CHANCES?

“Yes [but] worried is a big word. I know our defending line can deal with that. But I know they have a lot of creativity, and I say they have good routines. But we could have done things better. We are not as long together as Arsenal is. And when we get that in, we will be even more comfortable in the game and that is what we have to work for. And that is hard work. So, still a lot of room for improvement.”

TEN HAG SAVOURS VICTORY OVER ARSENAL

ANTONY’S EARLY IMPACT

“I think we have already seen what a threat he is. Speed and creativity are a real threat in the Premier League. And he is a part of it. And I think we missed a player on the right wing because all the players that can play there like Jadon Sancho, like Marcus Rashford, prefer more the centre or the left side. Now, we have the one who can play really good over the right wing, so there was a missing link. Now, today’s first performance here, he did well, but he can step up. I know him from Amsterdam. I know this is a different league, but there is potential and he will get that. He will be even better than he was today. But I would say today already, it was a great goal. Although, I must mention all the goals today were team goals.”

TEN HAG SAVOURS VICTORY OVER ARSENAL

CHANGE SINCE BRENTFORD

“There is a process. You have to lift. Everyday, high standards. That is my demands, my coaches’ demands. And I think also the players in our team have those demands. There are already many players in the team who have won a lot of trophies, and they had to bring that into the dressing room. Everyday, get the best out of you, and we demand that from each other.”

PLAYERS SHOWED CHARACTER

“Definitely. I must say Arsenal played well, but we defend well. And I never had the feeling they would break us. And they had good possession, a lot of movement and creativity. But we had a good defending line, but we defend as a team with all eleven [players]. But still, we can have better pressing organisation, we can keep them further away from our goal and control them very well. We need a little more composure on the ball. And you can control and dictate the game even more.”

RASHFORD ROLLING BACK THE YEARS

“He was brilliant. It was a really great performance from him. As a striker, he was pressing. But also, when we played it over him and he was the target, he made the right decisions. For instance, also with the goal for Antony. Finally, he was twice in behind and finished. It was a great performance and I’m really happy because he has invested a lot.”

TEN HAG SAVOURS VICTORY OVER ARSENAL

MALACIA EXCELLED AGAINST SAKA

“He played really well, [as did] the whole back four. I think David and Rapha bring their routine in, their experience, and then you see how it works. It’s really a unit and it’s difficult to create chances against them. Even when the pressing is not always good, they are stable and it’s good to see because that wins you football games.”

PLAYERS EAGER TO IMPROVE

“I think [they are]. And it has to be also the fact. You want to get that culture because we also know we are just at the start. There is a long way to go and we have to get better because good is not good enough.”

Buakaw Banchamek’s debut in bare-knuckle boxing on Saturday night was as brutal as it was short. The Muay Thai legend stepped into the ring against Turkish kickboxer Erkan Varol and knocked him out two minutes into the first round of their fight at CentralWorld in Bangkok.

After a quiet opening as Buakaw circled his opponent, observing his tactics, the Thai launched a left-hook into the body of Varol that staggered the Turk. Varol backed off but Buakaw followed up with a series of vicious right-hands to the body. Trapped on the ropes of the circular ring, the former European kickboxing champion took one last hooking punch under the ribs before collapsing to the canvass clutching his midriff.

The bare-knuckle bout was held under Broughton’s rules, in which fighting continues until a man goes down. He is then given 30 seconds to stand up and face his opponent. Varol failed to make the count and the fight was ruled as a knock-out win for Buakaw.
