After 14 years representing Thailand, goalkeeper Sinthaweechai Hathairattanakool couldn’t have a better way to say farewell to the national team than playing his part in a winning side.

The 37-year-old saw just 14 minutes’ action in his 79th and final national game, the 1-0 friendly victory over Trinidad and Tobago in Suphanburi on Sunday.

It was still enough for him to make a terrific save, from Trinidad midfielder Nathan Lewis, before he was replaced by Chatchai Butprom.

“It’s one of the biggest days in my life. Such a perfect day to end my time with the national team,” said the Suphanburi keeper, whose career highlights include two SEA Games gold medals in 2003 and 2005, plus a Thai League title with Chonburi FC in 2007.

“The minute I walked off the pitch after being substituted, I was overwhelmed. I felt like I had woken from a nice dream after 14 years. Now it’s time to move forward and live in reality.”

The long-time national goalkeeper also reminded his young teammates to retain their pride in the national jersey and keep working hard to help the team achieve their goals.

“Once you are tired and confront the obstacles, no matter how big they are, remember the national flag on your chest makes you special from ordinary players. Be proud and keep going,” he said.

Sinthaweechai will now focus on his career with Suphanburi, who finished 10th in the 2018 Thai League.

He also would love the chance to return to help the national team in another capacity in the future.

Sunday’s game also featured Chanathip Songkrasin, Teerathon Bunmathan and Teerasil Dangda, the three key men who took  a break from J-LEague to play in Sinthaweechai’s farewell appearance.

Teerathon, who has who already returned to his club Vessel Kobe, said: “It took my breath away [Sinthaweechai’s decision to quit the national team] but we have to respect his decision. I will cherish the good experiences we have had together.”

National coach Milovan Rajevac said: “Thanks to Sinthaweechai for sharing wonderful experiences with us. He will always be remembered.”

For Thailand, meanwhile, Sunday’s victory was their second in a row, following last Thursday’s 1-0 win away to Hong Kong.

The team’s next action will be in the AFF Suzuki Cup from November 8 – December 15.

FORMER SEA Games player Kammalas Namuangrak carded an unblemished 66 to beat South Korean teenager Kim Jooh-yung by two shots and claim his maiden victory in the Bt2-million Singha Classic at the Royal Hills Golf Resort and Spa in Nakhon Nayok yesterday.

The 26-year-old Bangkokian, who won team silver at the 2017 SEA Games, shot a total 10-under-par 274 to win his first title since turning professional in July.

“I’m so excited as I’ve come close to winning so many times in the past. Today I was trying to stay in the present and play my game,” said Kammalas who switched his focus to the pro tour after failing to make August’s Asian Games team.

“The turning point was when I made a great birdie putt on the par-3 15th for a two-shot lead. After that I felt confident and felt great about everything in my game. I played safe from then on to make sure I would hold on to that lead until the end,” added Kammalas who grabbed the winner’s cheque for Bt300,000.

“Winning this title has really boosted my confidence. I want follow the path of my predecessors who made successful transitions from the national team to the pro level – like Danthai Boonma and Natipong Srithong,” he added.

Overnight leader Kim, 16, hit a 69 at the par-71 7,278 yard course to land in lone second on 276. Kasidit Lepkurte, still looking for his first win, shot a final 70 to take third on 278.

The final and 10th stop of the 2018 All Thailand Tour is next week at the Burapha Golf and Resort in Chon Buri.

NAKHON SI Thammarat’s Supatchanin Khamhaeng claimed Thailand’s second gold medal at the Buenos Aires Youth Olympics with a total lift of 236kg in the 63kg class of women’s weightlifting on Sunday.

The 17-year-old hoisted 104kg in the snatch and 132kg in the clean and jerk for a combined 236kg, 18kg more than silver medallist Dilara Narin of Turkey. Uzbek Dolera Davronova finished third after lifting 217kg.

“The hard work finally paid off. I have been practising so hard for three years and had injury after injury. That has sometimes made me feel down. I would have quit if it wasn’t for my love of this sport,” said Supatchanin whose idol is Pimsiri Sirikaew, the 2012 London Olympics silver medallist.

The Thai weightlifting team also won two silvers, from Thipwara Chontavin in the women’s 63kg and Natthawat Chomchuen in the men’s 56kg. The team only missed a medal in the men’s 69kg.

Four years ago, the Kingdom’s weightlifters won two golds and one silver.

“We knew we would win three medals coming to Argentina. We reached the target. These young athletes can improve further in the future,” said Thai Amateur Weightlifting Association president Busaba Yodbangteoy.

Thailand won its first gold medal in women’s taekwondo, clinched last week in the 55kg category by Kanthida Saengsin.

Goalkeeper Sinthaweechai Hathairattanakool played his swan-song match after 14 years representing the national team. He took charge for 15 minutes before Chatchai Bootprom was sent to take his place.

Australia’s Marc Leishman unleashed an early birdie barrage as he romped home by five shots to claim top place in the $7 million PGA Tour event in Kuala Lumpur on Sunday.

At the par-72 TPC Kuala Lumpur, Leishman closed with a seven-under par 65 to finish the only PGA Tour event in southeast Asia at 26-under par 262 for his fourth win on the PGA Tour.

His effort was five shots better than Argentina’s Emiliano Grillo (66), and the American duo of Chesson Hadley (66) and Bronson Burgoon (68) — all of whom finished on 21-under par 267.

Two-time champion and former world number one Justin Thomas (64) closed with three birdies in his last three holes to surge up the leaderboard and finish in tied fifth place at 268, where he was joined by Mexican Abraham Ancer (65), South Africa’s Louis Oosthizen (69) and fellow Americans Charles Howell III (67) and Gary Woodland (71).

The world number 24 Leishman won the Arnold Palmer Invitational and the BMW Championship in 2017 and continued his winning streak in 2018 with the CIMB Classic win. It all would have looked a distant dream when the 34-year-old almost quit the game around the time of the 2015 Masters, when his wife Audrey was diagnosed with and nearly died from acute respiratory distress syndrome and toxic shock syndrome.

An emotional Leishman, who made eight birdies, including a putt from nearly 50 feet on the par-4 ninth, and a solitary bogey, said it felt “unbelievable” to win.

“It was a very tough time that we went through, but it certainly made us stronger as people, made us appreciate just the everyday things, appreciate our kids more, appreciate friends, family, everything,” he said of his wife’s illness.

“I won’t say it made golf less important, but it made me realize that golf’s not life or death… As long as I give it my best shot, that’s what it’s all about.”

Leishman opened with a par and then made four birdies in the next four holes to pull ahead. A brace of birdies on the ninth and 10th had taken him to 25-under par, with none of his closest pursuers putting any pressure on him.

Overnight joint leader Shubhankar Sharma of India started in a shaky manner before coming back strongly with four birdies in four holes from the eighth onwards, but he made three straight bogeys from the 11th to finish on even-par for the day.

Woodland also had an up and down round and never got going.

Grillo could have had a much better finish — but after getting to six-under par for the day after 12 holes, he could not make a single birdie on the last six holes.

The 26-year-old Argentine said: “I played very well, I shot 30 on the front nine. I started thinking if I could shoot seven-under, it would give me the chance. Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to play as well on the back nine, but four rounds in the 60s is always good.”

Hadley, 31, made a double bogey on the ninth hole, but four birdies on the back nine resurrected his round, and he was delighted with his finish after a poor run of form lately.

“Delighted like you wouldn’t believe. I haven’t been playing well for a while and to have a good tournament like this is really nice,” said the 2014 Puerto Rico Open champion.

Burgoon, who led after the opening day with a 63, recorded only his third top-10 finish in three years on the PGA Tour.

The PGA Tour next moves to Korea for the CJ Cup.

Djokovic wins Shanghai to close on world no.1

Novak Djokovic is within touching distance of Rafael Nadal’s number one ranking after winning the Shanghai Masters with a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Borna Coric on Sunday.

The 14-time Grand Slam champion broke the 19th-ranked Croatian — a good friend and sometime-training partner — in the sixth game of the first set on the way to another no-nonsense victory.

The end was anti-climactic, with the Serb winning the championship point after a video review.

Djokovic buried his head in his hand at the absurdity of it.

The 31-year-old will leapfrog Roger Federer into second in the world when the rankings are released on Monday and is in imperious form as the season reaches its climax.

Red-hot Djokovic has now been victorious in 18 ATP matches in a row and in recent months won Wimbledon, the Cincinnati Masters, the US Open and now Shanghai.

The last four months had been “fantastic” and “tremendous”, he said.

“I’m cherishing every moment of it,” he told the crowd, calling Shanghai “a special place” to him.

“I could not ask for a better scenario,” Djokovic said of his late surge to the summit of men’s tennis.

“I am very close now to Nadal in the rankings and put myself in a good position for the last period of the year.”

Coric, 21, said that he had no complaints about losing to “one of the best in the history of tennis”.

In what was the biggest match of his life, he wore heavy strapping on one thigh and has been troubled by a stiff neck that saw him ponder pulling out before the tournament.

But he refused to blame those for defeat to the man he considers something of an idol.

“He was the much better player on the court. I was playing good, really, I was really happy how I played,” he said.

“I felt even if I was serving a little bit better, he’d still return my serves, so there is nothing I can do.”

– Ruthless Djokovic –

This was a fourth Shanghai crown for Djokovic and he is homing in on a return to number one, having fallen as low as 22nd in May as he struggled following elbow surgery in February.

He also missed the second half of 2017 with elbow and off-court issues.

Coric, the 13th seed, was chasing only the third title of his career and defeated top seed Federer in the semi-finals to underline his rich promise.

He also dispensed of three-time Grand Slam winner and Federer’s fellow Swiss Stan Wawrinka in his opening match.

Coric had the extensive thigh strapping changed for the second set, but he was immediately broken when he somehow sent a routine volley out.

He had his first sniff of an opportunity with a break point in the sixth game of the second set, but second seed Djokovic survived when Coric again fired wide.

It is nearly two years since Djokovic topped the rankings and he has made it his mission to topple the injured Nadal before the year is out.

Chun In-gee wins first LPGA title in two years, Ariya finishes tied 3rd

Local favourite Chun In-gee shot a final-round 66 to win her first LPGA title in more than two years before a cheering home crowd while Ariya Jutanugarn followed four shots behind on Sunday.

Chun, ranked 27th in the world, finished 16 under par 272 to claim the US$300,000 first prize at the LPGA KEB Hana Bank Championships.

The 24-year-old fired seven birdies and one bogey in the final round to finish three strokes ahead of Charley Hull (71) of England at the Sky 72 Golf Club’s Ocean Course in Incheon.

An emotional Chun couldn’t hold back the tears after clinching her third career LPGA win and first non-major title.

“When I realized I won I just felt the hard times through the last few years just go away,” she said. “I’m so happy to get this win.”

Ariya Jutanugarn

The world’s top two players, Park Sung-hyun (69) of South Korea and Thailand’s Ariya Jutanugarn (71), were tied at third at 12 under.

“A lot of fans came out today so I was very grateful and in awe but I’m disappointed I couldn’t show them a better play,” Park said.

The 25-year-old, who will attend the Buick LPGA tournament in Shanghai next week, added: “I wasn’t satisfied with my shot all season but I’ve gained confidence in the past two weeks so I’m looking forward to the remaining tournaments.”

Park’s compatriot and defending champion Ko Jin-young (64) shot eight birdies to finish seventh at 11-under.

Man City deny claims of Messi bid

Manchester City have rubbished claims they made a failed bid to sign Barcelona legend Lionel Messi.

Messi has been linked with City several times since former Barcelona boss Pep Guardiola was appointed manager of the Premier League club in 2016.

City chairman Khaldoon al Mubarak was quoted in Spanish newspaper Mundo Deportivo as saying he once made a lucrative offer for Messi, which would reportedly have paid him more than £1 million ($1.3 million) per week.

“We asked Guardiola to talk to him, we offered him triple the salary he has at Barcelona, but he never accepted,” Mubarak was quoted as saying.

But City responded by insisting there was no truth to the report.

“We deny the veracity of these quotes,” a City spokesman said.

Argentina forward Messi played under Guardiola for four seasons at Barca, during which time they won 14 titles.

The 31-year-old signed a new contract with Barca in November 2017.

Guardiola won the Premier League and League Cup with City last season.

Netherlands hammer Germany to increase pressure on Loew

sports October 14, 2018 07:57

By AFP

Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk led the Netherlands to a crushing 3-0 win over Germany on Saturday in the Nations League to ramp up the pressure on German coach Joachim Loew.

A first-half header by Dutch skipper Van Dijk gave the hosts the lead in Amsterdam.

With the German defence in disarray, late goals from Memphis Depay and Liverpool’s Georginio Wijnaldum sealed the win on a golden night for the Oranje at Amsterdam’s Johan Cruyff Arena.

This is the first time the Dutch have beaten Germany for 16 years and the comprehensive defeat leaves Loew under increasing pressure to resign after 12 years in charge.

These are dark days for the Germans, still reeling from their woeful World Cup display when they crashed out early after finishing bottom of their group.

Defeat in Loew’s 168th international means Germany are once again last — this time bottom of Group One in the Nations League.

Van Dijk opened the scoring with a well-taken header after Ryan Babel had headed against the crossbar on 30 minutes.

Depay then compounded Germany’s misery by stroking home a pass from Quincy Promes three minutes from time after the pair got in behind the defence.

Depay then hit the Germany crossbar moments before Wijnaldum netted Holland’s third goal just before the final whistle.

Germany now face world champions France in Paris on Tuesday and Loew can ill afford another heavy defeat.

Earlier Saturday, Munich-based newspaper, the Sueddeutsche Zeitung, revealed there is a release clause in Loew’s contract, which runs until 2022, allowing either party to end the agreement prematurely.

Loew had promised an improved performance from the Germans.

Yet again, his senior players let him down as the Bayern Munich axis of Manuel Neuer, Jerome Boateng, Mats Hummels and Thomas Mueller struggled.

Loew pulled a surprise before kick-off by starting Manchester City starlet Leroy Sane on the bench.

Schalke striker Mark Uth made his debut up front with RB Leipzig winger Timo Werner and Mueller on the flanks.

Loew opted for a 4-3-3 formation, just like his opposite number Ronald Koeman who started with Besiktas’ Babel, Lyon’s Depay and Eindhoven striker Steven Bergwijn up front.

Uth and Werner both forced chances early on to keep Jasper Cillessen, Holland’s Barcelona goalkeeper, busy.

The Dutch went ahead after 30 minutes when Babel out-jumped Germany midfielder Joshua Kimmich to the ball, headed onto the post and Van Dijk pounced on the rebound.

Germany had their chances as Mueller and then his replacement Sane, who came on for the last half an hour, both fired wide with the goal at their mercy.

Having broken the German defence in the final 10 minutes, Depay hit the net, then the crossbar before Wijnaldum swept in their third goal just before the final whistle.
