Pliskova and Svitolina clinch last WTA Finals spots

Former world number one Karolina Pliskova earned a place in the year-ending WTA Finals despite a second-round defeat by Russian veteran Vera Zvonareva at Moscow’s Kremlin Cup on Wednesday.

Pliskova’s 6-1, 6-2 loss to Zvonareva, the 2010 Wimbledon and US Open runner-up, also secured Elina Svitolina’s spot in the eight-woman field in Singapore next week.

Czech star Pliskova’s participation was confirmed after fourth seed Kiki Bertens lost 6-3, 4-6, 6-3 to Aliaksandra Sasnovich of Belarus.

“I’m delighted to be appearing at the WTA Finals for the third time,” Pliskova said.

“I have such great memories from playing in Singapore in 2016 and 2017, and I can’t wait to close out the year competing against the other elite players of 2018.”

Pliskova and Svitolina joined top-ranked Simona Halep of Romania, Germany’s Angelique Kerber, Japan’s Naomi Osaka, Czech Petra Kvitova, Caroline Wozniacki of Denmark and Sloane Stephens of the USA.

They will battle for a $7 million (6.1 million euros) prize purse in Singapore.

Bertens, who sits ninth in the race to Singapore rankings, could still feature at the season-ending event as Halep, who pulled out of the Kremlin Cup on Tuesday, is battling a back injury.

She was diagnosed with a herniated disk following her withdrawal from Beijing two weeks ago.

The 34-year-old Zvonareva, who was unranked last year after taking a two-year hiatus to have her first child, claimed her first victory over a top-10 player since beating Caroline Wozniacki at the WTA Tour Finals in 2011.

“I knew that matches against top-10 players never come easy and tried hard to capitalise on every single opportunity that I had today and it paid off,” the current world number 161 said after downing Pliskova.

Third-seeded American Sloane Stephens, the French Open finalist and former US Open champion who qualified for the WTA Finals earlier this week, also slumped to a 6-3, 6-2 loss to Tunisian qualifier Ons Jabeur.

In the quarter-finals, Jabeur will face eighth seed Anett Kontaveit, who saw off Frenchwoman Kristina Mladenovic 6-2, 7-6 (7/3).

In the men’s draw, left-handed Frenchman Adrian Mannarino cruised into the last eight past top-seeded Italian Marco Cecchinato, beating this year’s French Open semi-finalist 6-2, 6-3 in just 50 minutes.

The 30-year-old Mannarino will next meet Belarusian qualifier Egor Gerasimov, who beat Benoit Paire 6-4, 6-4.

World Youth champion Atichai Phoemsap spearheaded Thailand’s youngsters into four boxing finals at the Youth Olympic Games in Buenos Aires on Wednesday.

The 18-year-old lightweight scored a 5-0 points decision over Burlan Safarov of Azerbijan to set up a showdown in the final against Taras Bondarchuk of Ukraine.

“I have achieved my target by reaching the final. I stuck to the instruction from my coach to bother him with my one-two punch combination,” said the teenager from Nakhon Ratchasima, who won gold at the World Youth Championships in Budapest in August.

“If I can maintain this level,” he added. “I’m quite confident about my chances in the final but I won’t underestimate my rival. I hope I can win the gold medal as a gift for my parents.”

Three more Thais will fight for the gold medals tonight.

They include flyweight Sarawut Sukthet, who eased past Luiz Gabriel Chalot De Oliviera of Brazil 4-1 in his semi-final.

The 17-year-old, who was bitten by Afghan opponent Sultan Mohammad Naeemi on the left shoulder in the previous round, will take on Britain’s Ivan Price in the final.

Atichai Phomsap reacts after his win.

“I was being patient and waiting for the right time to punch for points. In the final, the British guy is quite tall and has long arms. But I have no fear – my goal is to take the gold home,” Sarawut said.

In the women’s boxing, featherweight Panpatchara Somnuek beat Dearbhla Rooney of Ireland 4-1 and will face Jennifer Carrillo of Mexico in the final, while lightweight Porntip Buapa trounced Emma Lawson of Australia 5-0 to book a date with Briton Caroline Sara Dubois.

The only Thai to exit at the semi-final stage was middleweight Weerapon Jongjoho, nephew of former Olympic champion Somjit Jongjoho, who lost to Keno Machado of Brazil 5-0

Defending champion Kulavut Vitidsarn will spearhead the Thai badminton team into the BWF World Junior Championships due between November 5-18 in Canada.

The 17-year-old who became the first Thai boy to win the singles event in Indonesia last year will lead the 17-member Thai team in the tournament which features the mixed team event due between November 5-10 and the individual event, due between 12-18.

Badminton Association of Thailand president Khunying Patama Leeswadtrakul was confident the local youngsters will win at least a medal.

“We have produced impressive results in the World Junior Championships over the past 10 years by winning medals in every edition since 2008. So over the next few weeks the players and the coaching team will have to work hard in order to achieve good results in Canada,” said the badminton chief.

Thailand won one gold and one silver by Phittayapron Chaiwan in girls’ singles from the 2017 episode.

MotoGP™ once again was privileged to witness the ultimate cultural representation of the nation hosting the race.

When the morning sun rises in Tokyo, so too do the Rikishi (Sumo) in training at Tokyo’s Arashio Heya (Sumo House), and today, they changed up their training to invite World Championship riders Takaaki Nakagami (LCR Honda Idemitsu), Franco Morbidelli (EG 0,0 Marc VDS) and Jorge Martín (Del Conca Gresini Moto3) to train together ahead of the Motul Grand Prix of Japan.

After studying the Rikishi training schedule for the first time, the riders donned their shorts and joined the Rikishi in the sacred Dohyo (fight ring) to learn some basic Sumo wrestling moves. After a quick stretch and warm up it was time for the MotoGP™ stars to test out their new skills against the Rikishi.

First up was Nakagami who came in hot and gave his all to push the young Rikishi out of the ring. But his efforts were fruitless against the unshakeable warrior who didn’t move an inch. Martín tried his luck next but was easily lifted over the wrestler’s head and taken out of the ring.

The pressure was on when it came time for Morbidelli to step into the challenge but once again the Rikishi came out victorious. With one last effort, all three riders tried to move the solid young Sumo who took hold of all three riders at once and easily pushed them out of the ring.

“All three of us tried to move the Sumo, we gave everything but it was like trying to move stone. They’re so strong and he easily pushed us out of the ring with no effort at all. I am really surprised at how strong they are, it’s incredible” recalled Morbidelli.

After training it was time for breakfast. The head Rikishi of the Arashio Heya explained to the riders how breakfast and sleep is an important component to their training routine in helping to keep them nourished but also to assist in their body growth. The athletes shared a traditional Chenkonabe (vegetable and beef hot pot) and good conversation to finish off a morning of training no one was likely to forget. “It was an amazing experience, I’m Japanese but it’s the first time I’ve ever experienced Sumo” said Nakagami.

“It was interesting because I thought it would be completely different but when I saw how they trained I was surprised and I enjoyed seeing their passion. If I have time I want to visit the Sumo again.”

With new skills learned and a better appreciation for the iconic Japanese sport, the riders are ready to take on the toughest competition with FP1 of the Motul Grand Prix of Japan underway on Friday at 9am local time.

Mixed blessing for Thailand as Atthaya and Vanchai take gold

Teen prodigy Atthaya Thitikul and Vanchai Luangnitikul salvaged their pride from the individual performance to win the Youth Olympic Games gold in Buenos Aires on Tuesday.

Atthaya and Vanchai, who finished eighth and fourth in the girls and boys individual events last week, rebounded to claim gold for Thailand in the mixed team event, carding a total of 12 under-par-268.

The United States and hosts Argentina took silver and bronze with total scores of 269 and 273.

Their success also boosted the national team after a flop at the Asian Games flop in Jakarta in August, when Thailand, one of the regional favourites, failed to bring home a single medal.

“I was a bit disappointed to not win any medal in the individual [event] so I was determined to make amends in the mixed team and I made it,” said 15-year-old Atthaya, the youngest winner of a Ladies European Tour when she won the LET in Chon Buri last year. “I’m so honoured to win gold for my country,”.

Vanchai had actually braced himself to settle for silver as the US team led by five strokes after 15 holes – but they suffered a series of bogeys and let the gold slip away.

“After 15 holes, I just tried to play safe to make sure that we would take at least the silver. I didn’t know we would win until I finished the round. I have to give big credit to Atthaya for shooting scores for our team,” the 16-year-old Vanchai said.

It marked the first Youth Olympic Games golf gold medal for Thailand after Danthai Boonma and Supamas Sangchan won bronze in the boys and girls events in China four years ago.

It was also Thailand’s third gold in Argentina after Kanthida Saengsin and Supatchanin Khamhaeng won the women’s taekwondo 55kg and the women’s weightlifting 63kg.

Challenging season finale for Sandy

The sixth and final round of the Blancpain GT Series Asia took place at the new Ningbo International Speedpark in the Zhejiang province of China.

Thai racer Sandy Kraokaew Stuvik was once again joined by his Australian teammate Shae Davies.

Sandy qualified in 8th position in Qualifying 1 with his Porsche 911 GT3 R. The times were close in the session, so the race was shaping up to be an exciting one.

Shae Davies qualified in 13th position in Qualifying 2, in a hotly contested session.

Sandy took the start in Race 1 and was up to 5th position until a crash between a Nissan GTR GT3 and an Audi R8 GT3 happened in front of the Thai driver. The collision was unavoidable, Sandy did everything he could to evade. The damage sustained was too heavy to continue the race, meaning the Thai driver had to retire his Porsche 911 GT3 R.

Craft Bamboo Racing team mechanics did a fantastic job to get the car repaired and race-ready for Race 2 the following morning.

Shae Davies took the start in Race 2, and after a lot of chaos in the start, the Australian managed to settle down in 13th position before handing the car over to his Thai teammate. Sandy fought as hard as he could to maintain position but the lack of pace from the car was making a points-finish seem difficult. The Thai driver was then unfortunately tagged into a spin during a racing incident. He was unable to restart the engine, and was forced to retire the car.

“It has been one of the most challenging weekends and seasons in my career. The team has done a fantastic job all season and we’ve been able to get a podium, but ultimately I feel that the car we’ve had has been lacking pace all season. We will be back stronger and faster, and we are working towards next season already.

I want to thank all my supporters for following me this season and all the years previous, and I will do everything I can to bring the Thai flag and National Anthem to the circuits next year!” Sandy says.

Sandy Stuvik is honored to be supported by The Pizza Company, Singha Corporation, Thai Airways, Thaiwings Travel Agency, Dacon Inspection Services, the Tourism Authority of Thailand, the Sports Authority of Thailand, and the Royal Automobile Association of Thailand.

Sterling shines as England blow Spain away

sports October 16, 2018 05:01

Raheem Sterling scored twice as England delivered one of their finest victories of the modern era by beating Spain 3-2 in Seville on Monday.

Away from home, and against a Spanish side in scintillating form under their new coach Luis Enrique, this was certainly England’s best win under Gareth Southgate and, perhaps, their most impressive since thrashing Germany 5-1 in Munich in 2001.

Marcus Rashford was the other scorer in a breathless opening 45 minutes here, which witnessed Spain conceding three on home soil for the first time in their history.

Paco Alcacer, on as a substitute, headed in before the hour to spark hopes of a comeback but England were home and dry by the time Sergio Ramos scored in the 98th minute, with the last action of the match.

It means England keep alive their hopes of finishing top of Group 4 in the UEFA Nations League, the position Spain had needed only a point to all-but guarantee would be theirs.

It was a night for streaks ending and records tumbling. Sterling’s opening goal was his first in 1102 days for England, even more remarkable given he added his second 22 minutes later.

The last time England won away against Spain was 1987 and that was when they last scored against Spain away from home too, Gary Lineker on target.

With an average age of just over 23, this was also the youngest England starting line-up in the 21st century and that will be the most exciting aspect for Southgate.

For Spain, defeat represents something of a reality check. “Waving the flag for goals,” read Marca’s front page on Monday. They had scored 12 in three games since Luis Enrique took charge.

But Eric Dier set the tone early on. He left Sergio Busquets, sluggish throughout, hopping out of his first pass and then slid through Ramos, who was also out of sorts.

After a frantic start, England settled and in the 13th minute, scored. Under pressure at the back, they played keep-ball until the risk was too great and Jordan Pickford drove forward to Harry Kane.

With Spain caught upfield, he was able to turn and find Rashford whose quick switch set Sterling free. He finished into the top corner.

“We are staying up,” sang the away support as Thiago Alcantara danced around England’s midfield with flicks and tricks. But to little effect.

Instead, Harry Kane showed the value of a top-class centre forward for England’s second. He outmuscled Ramos to win Pickford’s punt downfield, outpaced Nacho to the loose ball with a superb reverse pass in behind. Rashford only had to finish.

Spain’s early confidence was gone and England added a third before the interval, which was greeted by whistles from the home fans.

Ross Barkley’s sumptuous ball over the top caught Ramos napping again and Kane squared for Sterling to tap in. “Are you Scotland in disguise?” came the taunt from the corner.

Spain were sent out early for the second period, among them Alcacer, who replaced Saul. He scored with his first touch, heading in Marco Asensio’s corner, given away after a fumble by Pickford.

It was a nightmare few minutes for England’s goalkeeper, who then dallied and was tackled by Rodrigo.

Pickford scrambled the ball away but probably fouled Rodrigo in the process and Spain were adamant they deserved a penalty. The referee was not convinced.

England played for time, with a handful of players going down with injuries, and Spain’s pressure gradually eased. Rodrigo shot wide in the final 10 minutes. Asensio went even closer.

Marcos Alonso then deflected onto the bar deep into injury time and Ramos headed home in the 98th minute. But there was not even time for a restart. England’s win was complete.

Now or never: can anyone stop Marquez’ march towards the crown?

sports October 16, 2018 01:00

By MotoGP

Spaniard on the cusp of the title as we arrive at the home of Honda.

Marc Marquez (Repsol Honda Team) has done it before and wrapped up the title on the home turf of manufacturer Honda, and in 2018 he has chance to do it again in the Motul Grand Prix of Japan. If he scores points and finishes ahead of Andrea Dovizioso (Ducati Team) and if he doesn’t concede more than two points to Dovizioso and 24 to Valentino Rossi (Movistar Yamaha MotoGP), Marquez is Champion and takes his seventh crown. The hard-braking behemoth of the Twin Ring Motegi could decide everything.

The mission for Dovizioso is clear, then. He has to be ahead of Marquez and the best case scenario is to win. He has good form at the venue including two poles – 2010 and 2014 – and two podiums, one of which was a win, last season. And who could forget the stunning showdown in the rain as Marquez and Dovizioso dueled it out? The Italian certainly won’t, nor the fact that he won it in style. Despite the Spaniard fighting back last time out, Dovi remains ahead in their last lap showdowns.

So what of Valentino Rossi? The Italian remains third by virtue of consistency and consistently getting the best from the package, despite some struggles for Yamaha of late. He needs to go big to play a big part in the title decider, but like most venues, he’s a former winner at Motegi – that’s a given. Could Thailand have been a turning point for Yamaha too? Both Rossi, who came fourth at Buriram, and teammate Maverick Viñales, who locked out the podium, had much improved pace there – and that despite the hot temperatures and high tyre wear. They’ll hope to be a force to be reckoned with as it’s their home race and also the home track of arch rivals Honda – something also true of Hamamatsu factory Suzuki and Team Suzuki Ecstar’s Alex Rins and Andrea Iannone.

One unknown quantity who could have a big say in the weekend is Jorge Lorenzo (Ducati Team). Crashing out at Aragon and left riding through the pain barrier on Friday in Thailand, the ‘Spartan’ was on the pace – until a monster highside in FP2 put paid to his weekend at Buriram. It was caused by a mechanical problem and Lorenzo, classed fit to race, nevertheless chose to sit the weekend out. He’ll be back at Motegi, however, and he has quite a CV at the Japanese venue, including three wins. As does Dani Pedrosa (Repsol Honda Team), who crashed out in Thailand.

The fight for top Independent Team rider continues to rage just behind Lorenzo in the standings. Cal Crutchlow (LCR Honda Castrol) has 128 points, Danilo Petrucci (Alma Pramac Racing) 126 and Johann Zarco (Monster Yamaha Tech 3) 123 – so it remains incredibly close and every weekend is pivotal, with Motegi no different. The same is true in the battle for Rookie of the Year as last time out Hafizh Syahrin (Monster Yamaha Tech 3) closed on Franco Morbidelli (EG 0,0 Marc VDS) and it’s just five points between the two, but at Motegi, eyes will be on a different rookie.

Takaaki Nakagami (LCR Honda Idemitsu) is one of the home heroes who will be on track and the Japanese rookie has had some good pace of late – and then suffered bad luck on race day. He’ll want to put on a good show at his home race and the home race of HRC, but he won’t be alone in flying the flag. Yamaha test rider Katsuyuki Nakasuga will be another Japanese rider on the grid as he wildcards, giving the home crowd a rookie and a veteran to cheer for.

The Motul Grand Prix of Japan has everything hanging in the balance. Marquez is on the cusp of yet more history and, again, it’s Andrea Dovizioso the key man in his way. Find out if Motegi hosts another incredible showdown on Sunday 21st October when the lights go out at 14:00 (GMT +2) local time.

Championship Standings

1 – Marc Marquez (SPA) HONDA 271 points

2 – Andrea Dovizioso (ITA) DUCATI 194

Team work made the dream work at Buriram, with Bagnaia now 28 points clear

Francesco Bagnaia was happy after he crossed the line at Buriram for a magnificent seventh win, but that ramped up even more as teammate Luca Marini pulled up alongside him to signal he’d made it a Sky Racing Team VR46 1-2. Bagnaia had been set to gain five points on rival Miguel Oliveira (Red Bull KTM Ajo) by the latter stages but after Marini’s late charge saw him get past the Portuguese rider, five became nine and the advantage for Bagnaia is now more than a win. Worth celebrating? You bet.

There is a fair way yet to go and 100 points up for grabs beginning in Japan, but Bagnaia knows that was an important result. Oliveira does too, and he knows it’s now gloves off and there’s no margin to play it safe. Motegi needs to begin a fight back before the venues the Portuguese rider dominated last season appear on the horizon; friendly faces after some tougher rounds.

Tougher round is something on the lips of Alex Marquez (EG 0,0 Marc VDS), teammate Joan Mir, Lorenzo Baldassarri (Pons HP 40) and Marcel Schrötter (Dynavolt Intact GP) after Buriram. All crashing out and heading for Japan empty headed, it was a Sunday to forget for all. But there are some positives for many to take from the weekend, and some positives looking ahead – Marquez, for example, took his first ever GP win at Motegi, in 2013 as a Moto3™ rookie.

An expensive day for those guys was a welcome gain for Brad Binder (Red Bull KTM Ajo) though, as the South African stoked his points haul with another solid result. “Better than my usual sixth,” was the smile after a hard-fought fourth in Thailand, and the South African is now in a comfortable third overall in the standings. Consistency has been a buzz word for Binder, with the 2016 Moto3™ World Champion only surpassed by Bagnaia and Oliveira in that department as the two remain the only two to take points every race.

Motegi always shows incredible support for every rider and they’ll be in for another showstopper on Sunday, but the crowd will also have their eye on some home favourites – including Tetsuta Nagashima (Idemitsu Honda Team Asia) in Moto2™. Nagashima has been consistently progressing and getting further to the front, and Thailand saw the Japanese rider take his best ever result in eighth. He’ll be gunning for another top ten and points at home.

Teammates, tactics, thrills and hopefully less spills await at the Twin Ring Motegi. Don’t miss Moto2™ as the tensions continue to rise – tune in for the race at 12:20 (GMT +9) on Sunday.

Championship Standings1 – Francesco Bagnaia (ITA) KALEX 259 points

2 – Miguel Oliveira (POR) KTM 231

3 – Brad Binder (RSA) KTM 157

4 – Lorenzo Baldassarri (ITA) KALEX 132

5 – Alex Marquez (SPA) KALEX 126

Motegi awaits Moto3™ after yet another twist in the tale in Thailand

Friday and Saturday seemed to give us a clue to what was going to happen on Sunday in the PTT Thailand Grand Prix, as Jorge Martin (Del Conca Gresini Moto3) struggled with the fitness of his left hand and key title rival Marco Bezzecchi (Redox PruestelGP) took pole. Even come Sunday, the Spaniard looked to be on the back foot. It was a big about face by the flag, however, as Martin was able to steadily make his way through the pack and Bezzecchi was crashed out through no fault of his own. The result? 26 points of advantage for the Gresini rider, a serious mountain for Bezzecchi to climb, and a new big contender…

After his first win earlier in the season, Buriram marked the second for Fabio Di Giannantonio (Del Conca Gresini Moto3) and it’s taken him to within just three points of second in the standings. With Enea Bastianini (Leopard Racing) failing to finish in the incident with Bezzecchi and Aron Canet (Estrella Galicia 0,0) missing through injury, where there were once a group of five contenders there now appear to be three and ‘Diggia’ is far from a dark horse. The hard-braking monster of Motegi will be a challenge for Martin and his recovering hand, and both the Italians chasing him down know it’s increasingly now or never as the season barrels on.

As well as that fight at the front and the key names so often in contention, there will be a lot at stake in Japan for those riding on home turf, too. Buriram became something of a turning point for two of them: Kazuki Masaki (RBA BOE Skull Rider) and Ayumu Sasaki (Petronas Sprinta Racing). Masaki put it on the front row for the first time and briefly led before sadly crashing out, and Sasaki led FP2, showed top pace and battled at the front for a good while until falling victim to some racing that got a little too close. Motegi is a page turned but there are some big positives to take there.

That’s also true for Kaito Toba (Idemitsu Honda Team Asia), who took P12 and was back in the battle for points and recovering some Sunday form. He also has a new deal for next season in his pocket, as does compatriot Tatsuki Suzuki (SIC58 Squadra Corse), although he sadly crashed out in Thailand. It was a mixed bag for the Japanese contingent at the flag, but they’ll mean business once again at Motegi.

From the 19th to 21st October we return to the land of the rising sun. Tune in to the action at the Twin Ring Motegi from 9:00 (GMT +9) local time on Friday as practice begins and make a date with Moto3™ on Sunday at 11:00.

Championship Standings1 – Jorge Martin (SPA) HONDA 204 points

5 – Aron Canet (SPA) HONDA 118
