Tiger Woods seals first win in five years with Tour Championship

Atlanta

Tiger Woods scored his first victory in more than five years on Sunday, completing a two-shot win at the Tour Championship to crown a fairy tale comeback after a near two-year absence.

The 42-year-old, 14-time major winner carded a one-over-par 71 at Atlanta’s East Lake Golf Course to claim the 80th PGA Tour title of his glittering career.

Woods, who finished with an 11-under-par aggregate 269, raised his arms in delight after the victory, with several thousand fans ringing the green roaring their appreciation.

Woods admitted he had nearly been overcome with emotion as he walked up the 18th fairway.

“I was having a hard time not crying coming up the last hole,” Woods said, whose most recent win before Sunday had come 1,876 days ago at the 2013 WGC-Bridgestone Invitational.

“I kept saying ‘Hey, I could still play this out of bounds.’ But once I got the ball on the green I gave (caddie) Joey (LaCava) a high five because I knew it was done.”

It was an emotional finale to a year which saw Woods return to the highest level after he had once feared he may never play golf again.

“It was just a grind out there,” Woods said of his final round. “I loved every bit of it. The fight, the grind, the tough conditions.

“To win it’s certainly up there with obviously all the major championships I’ve won, Players, World Golf Championships but then this is under different circumstances.

“I just didn’t know whether this would ever happen again. If I could somehow piece together a golf swing this year, I felt like I could do it … somehow I’ve been able to do that, and here we are.”

Woods later revealed he had also fought back tears on the final green as he prepared for the par putt to complete the win.

“I realised all of sudden I was going to win the tournament,” he said.

– ‘It’s been tough’ –

“My eyes started tearing up a little bit. I just can’t believe I pulled this off after I’ve gone through.

“It’s been tough. I’ve had a not-so-easy last couple of years. I’ve worked my way back. I couldn’t have done it without the help of all the people around me.

“Some of the other players knew what I was struggling with. It was really special to see them at the green on 18. It’s just hard to believe I won the Tour Championship.”

The victory erased any last lingering doubts about Woods’ ability to compete at the highest level, something he had served notice of with top 10 finishes at the British Open and US PGA Championships.

Woods, who returned in January after missing almost the entire previous two years with a debilitating back injury, held a three-shot advantage heading into the final round.

A birdie on his opening hole extended Woods’ lead to four shots to give the former world number one a dream start.

With the remainder of the 30-man field struggling to make any inroads, Woods then played solid if unspectacular golf to keep a stranglehold on the lead.

A bogey on the 10th was a mere blip, with Woods re-establishing a five-shot cushion at 13 under after rolling in a 13-foot birdie putt on the par-four 13th.

Billy Horschel closed the gap to four shots after after a four-under-par final round 66, but Woods looked to be in control.

Woods, however, gave his army of fans roaring him on a scare though when back-to-back bogeys on the 15th and 16th holes cut his lead to two with two to play.

But he steadied the ship with a dogged par on the 17th and then closed out the win with a par on 18.

“Billy put a bit of pressure on me at the end. The up and down at 17 was huge,” added Woods, who was flying to Paris later Sunday with the US team for week’s Ryder Cup.

“We’re flying tonight with the guys, it’s going to be fun,” said Woods. “I think we’re all going to sleep well.”

Meanwhile England’s Olympic champion Justin Rose ensured he walks off with the FedEx Cup playoff title after finishing on six under for a share of fourth.

Woods was made to sweat however after a shaky three-over-par 73 on his final round.

“It felt like a slow death out there for me today,” Rose said before saluting Woods, who stood nearby.

“I’d like to congratulate Tiger right now. I think the world of golf is really proud of you and is super excited about your game and the way the game of golf is going.”

The defending champions beat Police Tero 2-0 to extend their lead over arch-rivals Bangkok United to nine points. With 75 points and a better head-to-head record over second-place Bangkok, Buriram have won the league with three games still to play.

“I have to thank everyone in the team for their hard work. … Winning the league two years in a row is never easy but we have done very well in every game. This is the best day for us,” said the Serbian coach.

Buriram will play Pattaya United next Saturday, Air Force Central on October 3 and Ratchaburi FC on October 7. Regardless of what happens in those games, Buriram will hold the trophy aloft for a record sixth time, after triumphing in 2011, 2013, 2014, 2015 and 2017.

“I also have to thank the fans for their support. … We will keep working hard in the remaining three games and other Cup matches,” added Bandovic.

“We will get even stronger next year, our young players will grow and have more experience, like Sasalak [Haiprakhon], Ratthanakorn [Maikami], Supachok [Sorachat], and Supachai [Jaided] who have stepped up to become first [team] players. They should be proud, as champions for the second time,” Bandovic said.

With Ubon UMT and Air Force already guaranteed of relegation to League 2, Chainat Hornbill, Police Tero and Navy are battling to avoid becoming the third demoted team.

Joshua Pacio earns strawweight title with unanimous decision over Naito

Jakarta – ONE Championship™ (ONE), held another unforgettable evening in Indonesia’s bustling capital city of Jakarta, featuring the best and the brightest in the constantly-expanding world of martial arts.

ONE: CONQUEST OF HEROES sent shockwaves of excitement through the packed Jakarta Convention Center as the card featured a series of compelling bouts, punctuated by a highly-anticipated championship rematch. In the main event, Joshua Pacio of the Philippines defeated grappling wizard Yoshitaka Naito of Japan to be crowned the new ONE Strawweight World Champion.

In the main event of ONE: CONQUEST OF HEROES, Joshua “The Passion” Pacio of the Philippines fully realized his dream to become a world champion in the sport of mixed martial arts, dethroning Japanese rival Yoshitaka “Nobita” Naito. Pacio clinched a unanimous decision in their rematch to capture the ONE Strawweight World Championship. Naito showcased his overwhelming grappling skills to consistently bring Pacio to the ground, controlling the action on the canvas late in the contest. Although Naito managed to showcase his wrestling, it was Pacio who showed striking superiority for the majority of the bout. Pacio repeatedly connected on Naito with crisp, clean combinations throughout the championship contest while exhibiting solid takedown and grappling defense. In the end, all three judges saw the bout in favor of Pacio to win by unanimous decision.

Joshua Pacio stated: “I’m speechless, but I want to thank the Lord Jesus Christ, and ONE Championship for the privilege and this unexplainable feeling. Last week, typhoons struck Baguio City, Benguet, and the Cordilleras. A lot of places were hit hard. Many people died and some are still missing. This is for all of them. I know that the Cordilleras will come back and rise again soon as one. Of course, I would like to thank my coach Mark Sangiao, who is here, and all our coaches, friends and sponsors. They had our back since day one. I tried to counter his (Naito’s) takedowns and grappling, but this guy is a legend. He was so tough.”

In the co-main event of the evening, Chinese grappler Peng Xue Wen silenced the Indonesian crowd after defeating hometown favorite Stefer Rahardian via unanimous decision. The former Chinese wrestling champion flaunted a different dimension in his expanding skill set as he picked Rahardian apart in the striking department. Peng’s superb takedown defense was also a major key as he claimed a crucial victory after an action-packed three-round affair.

Thai kickboxing superstar Rodtang Jitmuangnon announced his arrival to the heavily-acclaimed ONE Super Series in astounding fashion, clinching a unanimous decision victory over former ONE World Title challenger Sergio “Little One” Wielzen of the Netherlands. Rodtang wowed the fans in Jakarta as he unloaded a torrent of punches and kicks to outclass Wielzen from bell to bell. The dominant performance earned Rodtang the unanimous decision win after three rounds.

In a battle between two outstanding flyweights, Danny “The King” Kingad of the Philippines overcame a spirited effort from Japanese newcomer Yuya “Little Piranha” Wakamatsu, earning a unanimous decision. Kingad was in trouble for the majority of the opening round after being tagged by Wakamatsu’s hard right straight and a follow-up knee strike. Avoiding further danger in the stand-up exchanges, Kingad resorted to his wrestling in the succeeding rounds where he found his leverage by shooting for high-impact takedowns and threatening with various submissions. In the end, the three cageside judges awarded the victory to Kingad unanimously.

Japanese knockout artist Koyomi Matsushima left a lasting impression in his ONE Championship debut, scoring a huge victory at the expense of former ONE Featherweight World Champion Marat “Cobra” Gafurov of Russia. Matsushima caught Gafurov with a stunning right cross that landed square on the Russian’s chin in the first round. As Gafurov dropped to the canvas, Matsushima poured down a volley of follow-up strikes to secure the finish. The victory earned Matsushima the GoDaddy KO of the Night honors.

Turkish lightweight contender Saygid Guseyn Arslanaliev brought the crowd to its feet after making quick work of Russian dynamo Timofey Nastyukhin with a scintillating knockout victory in the first round. Arslanaliev weathered Nastyukhin’s early striking onslaught as his opponent came out with a lot of power behind his shots. The tide dramatically turned into Arslanaliev’s favor moments later, after he caught a kick and tripped Nastyukhin to the ground before finishing the bout with a series of piston-like punches for the knockout.

Former ONE Flyweight World Champion Kairat Akhmetov of Kazakhstan returned to his winning form, dominating Chinese phenom “The Southern Eagle” Ma Hao Bin to earn a unanimous decision victory. It did not take long for Akhmetov to showcase his elite grappling prowess, emphatically taking Ma down and imposing his will on the ground. Ma simply had no answers for his opponent’s world-class wrestling as Akhmetov cruised to victory after three rounds of action.

Indonesia’s Priscilla Hertati Lumban Gaol reinserted her name into the winner’s column, clinching a unanimous decision win over previously-unbeaten Filipina standout Jomary Torres. Driven to redeem herself in front of her countrymen, Lumban Gaol shrugged the cobwebs off of her lackluster start in the early going, stopping every takedown attempt from Torres in the second and third rounds. Easily outmaneuvering Torres at every turn, Lumban Gaol kept Torres on the receiving end of thudding knee strikes, which steered her to a convincing victory.

In a ONE Super Series Muay Thai bantamweight contest, French Guiana’s Fabrice Fairtex Delannon scored his first victory since joining ONE Championship last June, coming away with a razor-thin split decision over Muay Thai star Yodpanomrung Jitmuangnon of Thailand. The two warriors traded powerful striking combinations over the course of three rounds, but it was Delannon who focused on doing more damage. In the end, two of the three judges scored in favor of Delannon to take home the win.

Local martial arts veteran “The Terminator” Sunoto put together an inspiring performance, finishing opponent Victorio “Indra” Senduk with a slick submission in the second round. After dominating the first round with his wrestling, Sunoto entered the second looking to finish. Although Senduk tried his best to defend against Sunoto’s advances, he had no answer for the veteran’s superior grappling. Towards the end of the second frame, Sunoto took Senduk’s back and latched on the rear naked choke to force the tap.

Local martial arts star Adrian “Papua Badboy” Mattheis turned in a spectacular performance to place himself back in the winner’s circle, stopping countryman Angelo “The Unicorn King” Bimoadji in the first round of a scheduled three-round strawweight contest. After a brief grappling exchange, the two men found themselves back on their feet trading strikes. Mattheis then unloaded a left hook, uppercut combination to end matters midway through the opening frame. Referee Yuji Shimada had no choice but to call a halt to the contest after Bimoadji was out on his feet.

Kicking off the action at ONE: CONQUEST OF HEROES were local stars Egi Rozten and Riski “King Kong” Umar. The two figured in a back-and-forth striking contest to set the tone for what would be an exciting night of world-class martial arts action. In the end, Rozten continued his rise through the ranks and scored yet another scintillating finish, stopping Umar in the third round with strikes.

The world’s first Muay Thai Expo in Buriram, Thailand is officially underway. The elite of Muay Thai fighters recently gathered at the Sports Authority of Thailand for the official press conference.

To open festivities, those in attendance were treated to a Muay Boran demonstration by  Sagat Petchyindee. The expo is cutting no corners, bringing together all the truly amazing elements of Muay Thai. It goes beyond the martial art into the deep cultural traditions of Thailand and the rich history it entails.

The four day event will be headlined by a 10 fight card on October 5. Muay Thai legends Somrak Khamsing and Samart Payakaroon were on hand at the press conference to promote their exhibition match. The pair were truly humbled to have witnessed first hand the monumental growth of the sport in the last decade, and were honored to take part in such a historic event.

The fight card, dubbed ‘Legend of Muay Thai’ will feature both Thai and international competitors from Mongolia and Turkey. American teen sensation Bekah Irwin will also be on the card, defending her Nai Khanom Tom Muay Thai Sports Association Title against W.P.M.F Champion Kaenkaew Kor.Klomkliem of Thailand.

The Sports Authority of Thailand, together with the Nai Khanomtom Association, aims to use this event to showcase Muay Thai on an international scale. It is being held in conjunction with the first ever MotoGP in Thailand, PTT Thailand Grand Prix.

The event organizers will also be selling polo shirts with partial proceeds going to the the Nai Khanom Tom Association and its program designed to help retired fighters with medical expenses. There are only a limited number of shirts available and those interested in purchasing this limited edition item will also get event entry and reserved seating at the fights.

Events like these, with the Chang International Circuit, didn’t happen when these fighters were growing up. It’s a testament to the growth of the sport and Buriram that young Isaan and Buriram fighters can fight on massive shows like this for their people.

Muay Thai mogul Boat Petchyindee was on hand, calling Buriram the ‘City of Muay Thai’. He credited the province for having raised many champions of the sport.

Those who already have tickets to the MotoGP can enter the expo free of charge. Otherwise, tickets are Bt200 per day, and will be available at the door. Those with a PTT Blue card are entitled to a 25% discount.

The event will take place between October 4-7 from 10:00 to 20:00 daily. Fights are set to be broadcast on Amarin TV on October 5, 2018 from 6pm onward. For more information, please visit:https://www.facebook.com/muaythaiexpo/  and IG MuayThai Expo.

‘Welcome back’: Ferguson at United for first time since brain op

sports September 23, 2018 01:00

Manchester, United Kingdom

Alex Ferguson made an emotional return to Manchester United on Saturday for the first time since the club’s legendary former manager had emergency brain surgery.

Ferguson, who managed United for 27 years, was left fighting for his life after being rushed to hospital in May.

But the 76-year-old Scot has made a good recovery and a picture of Ferguson arriving at Old Trafford ahead of United’s Premier League clash with Wolves was posted on United’s official Twitter account on Saturday.

The picture’s caption read: “Welcome back to Old Trafford, Sir Alex.”

Ferguson, speaking to MUTV, admitted it was a big moment to be back at the stadium where one of the stands is named after him in recognition of his incredible achievements with United.

“I’m really good. Obviously it’s been a long journey and I’m gradually making steps forward, doing what my son tells me and what the doctors tell me, so, yeah, I’m really good,” he said.

“I’m a bit nervous, to be honest with you, maybe a bit tense really because I think my last game was Arsenal back in April. It was a long time but it’s great to be back and I just hope we get a win today.

“It’s great to go back to the stadium and it’s going to be quite emotional for me when the game starts, things like that. It had to happen some time and I’ve been looking forward to it. The important thing was getting the right time and the right rest before coming to a game.

“It’s bound to be emotional. Particularly when I take my seat in the box. That will be something, you know. I’ll be glad when it gets over and the game starts and I can enjoy it.”

Asked about the messages of support he had received, Ferguson added: “It was unbelievable.

“There were thousands of cards, and they kept arriving at Salford Royal Hospital. I’d left by that time but they kept coming and kept coming. The number of emails, texts and personal cards to the house, it was just amazing. It really was.

“I’m overcome by it and overwhelmed by it. I think, if you remember, I did the message to thank the people who had taken the time to send me messages. It was really important to do that.

“Some of the doctors are here (as special guests) who did the operation and I thought it was the right thing to do. It’s great to be back.”

United also posted a message on their Twitter feed encouraging fans attending Saturday’s game to be in their seats 15 minutes before the 3pm kick-off “as we prepare to honour Sir Alex’s return”.

Ferguson, who retired in 2013, won 38 trophies during a 26-year spell in charge of United, including 13 Premier League titles and two Champions Leagues.

Prior to that he won 11 trophies with Aberdeen.

Parinda calms down to finally win Masters

2017 No 1 Parinda Phokan finished the 2018 Thai LPGA Tour on a high on Friday, beating amateur Kultida Pramphun by six strokes to capture her second title of the year in the Bt4 million Thai LPGA Masters at the Panya Indra Golf Course in Bangkok.

https://www.facebook.com/NationNews/videos/232440417621125/?t=0

The 21-year-old, who won the Thai LPGA Order of Merit last year, recovered from a bogey on the fifth hole to fire five birdies in a closing 69 for a 14 under-par-202 to complete a wire-to-hire victory.

“I came close to winning several times in this tournament and finally I made it this year. I’m so proud of myself,” said Parinda, who finished second last year.

Starting the round with a four-shot lead, Parinda admitted she was a bit nervous at the start but stuck to her game plan by enjoying the day – and that was the key.

“I was excited. I shot no score and made a bogey on the fifth. But then I tried to calm down and started making birdies. I really wanted to win here as I have been playing since I was young,” added Parinda, who earned a winner’s cheque for Bt600,000.

World No 2 and 14 Ariya and Moriya Jutanugarn also stopped by at the course to show their support for local tour. Their presence was very special to Parinda.

“They are my inspiration. I always hope to succeed like they do. But I still need a few years to gain more experience before I turn to the LPGA Tour,’’ added Parinda, who won a Thai LPGA event at home in Khon Kaen earlier this year.

Asian Games player Kultida, 17, produced the round’s lowest of a 67 to finish second on eight-under 208, her best result on the professional event.

“I came into the tournament hoping to make it to the top 10 but coming second was way beyond my expectation,” said the Ampornpaisarn Pak Kred School pupil.

Kultida was part of the Asian Games team which was widely expected to produce at least one medal for Thailand but returned empty-handed.

This week’s result was a redemption for her.

“Everybody was under so much pressure during the Asian Games. For me, I learned so many things that really helped me to play well this week. When you play with no pressure, you tend to have better results,” added Kultida, who plans to turn professional next year after the SEA Games in the Philippines.

As an amateur Kultida was not eligible for the prize-money.

Pannarat Thanapolboonyaras, one of the eight Thais who have maintained LPGA cards for 2019, shot a final 68 to share third place on 210 with Australian Munchin Keh and South Korean Park Jin Hee.

“I always feel happy every time I came back to play here. I just wished I could have done better but finishing third was more than OK,” said Pannarat.

She and the other third-placed finishers received Bt313,333 each.
