Imagine you are tearing down the rugby pitch and when you reach the try line, you dive…but instead of hitting the ground, you plunge into Lake Geneva.
This is not just a bizarre dream – water rugby has come to Switzerland. Over 20 teams competed in touch rugby tournaments on a floating pitch from Friday to Sunday.
With a slippery surface, spectators might not be surprised to see players falling into the water, but few perhaps knew that falling in was also intentional: in this five-a-side game of touch rugby, players must jump off the end of the pitch into Lake Geneva to score a try.
The event was organised by Water Rugby Lausanne to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Lausanne University Rugby Club.
After a warm-up event on Friday, 21 teams of men and women competed in a tournament with games lasting fourteen minutes each.
The President of Water Rugby Lausanne, Mathieu Falbriard, also saw the event as a fun way of encouraging more women to play rugby. As such, the weekend included a one-hour free session open to all women.
“Women’s rugby is a little less well represented in Switzerland, so we wanted to take advantage of this platform to offer one hour of rugby for free to all women who want to try rugby in a very playful way,” said Falbriard.
All players accessed the pitch by a floating pontoon that moved from the shore to the pitch.
The pitch itself is 25 metres by 35 metres (27.3 by 32.8 yards) and it is made of floating blocks collected from a nearby port. The blocks were transported by boat to the site, joined together and covered in a special surface before rugby posts were added.
Yves Guignard was one of those brave enough to take the plunge. Yves participated in Friday’s warm-up event, where sponsors put together mixed-gender teams. Employees competed in a mini water rugby tournament as a team-building exercise.
“I was quite surprised because it’s a really slippery surface. It’s a little more difficult to find your footing than on the normal ground, but otherwise, it’s extremely fun. The water is good. There are good surprises and it’s a lot of fun to see people fall over the sides as well,” said Guignard.
The fourth Bt3million Thailand Mixed hosted by TrustGolf will feature the stableford format for the first time as the best female player will receive a slot into the Women’s Australian Open in December.
The fourth meet of the men-versus-women golf event is due between August 25 and 28 at Thana City Country Club which measures 7,008 yards off the men’s tee and 6,281 off the women’s.
Unlike all previous Thailand Mixed series, the stableford format will be introduced in this latest circuit for the first time. In comparison to the stroke play event, in a stableford pattern, players score points based on the number of strokes taken on each hole: albatross = + 8, eagle = + 5, birdie = + 2, par = 0, bogey = – 1 and – 2 for a double bogey and more.
After 36 holes, top 60 and ties will proceed into the weekend rounds. After four days and 72 holes, a player with the highest number of points wins the tournament In addition, a female player with the best score (but must finish in the top five on the leaders’ board) will be granted a wildcard into the Women’s Australian Open, an ALPGA event, in December. Another slot will be given to a Thai female player on the same condition in the final Thailand Mixed next month.
The Thailand Mixed is organised by TrustGolf, an indoor training center with advanced technology. It is supported by the Sports Authority of Thailand, the National Sports Development Fund, the Ministry of Tourism and Sports, Bangkok Bank, B.Grimm Company, Bond Holdings, AISPLAY, Bridgestone, Trust Pharmacy, Trust Live Streaming, Adidas Golf, the Center for Covid-19 Situation Administration and Thana City Country Club.
Fans can watch live coverage of the third Thailand Mixed either on AIS Play APP and TrustGolf Facebook and Youtube.
“The sky’s the limit” for a piece of memorabilia belonging to American basketball legend Michael Jordan that will go up for auction next month.
Jordan’s jersey from Game 1 of the 1998 NBA Finals, recently re-popularized by ESPN’s “The Last Dance” documentary series on Netflix, is being listed by Sotheby’s at $3 to $5 million. Bidding will be open from September 6-14 on Sotheby’s website.
Brahm Wachter, head of streetware and modern collectibles for Sotheby’s, said the jersey is one of the most significant artifacts from Jordan to come to the market.
“When you think of the arc of Michael Jordan’s career, and him coming to his last chance at a sixth NBA championship, the Last Dance really holds a special place in the hearts of all Michael Jordan fans,” he said.
The 1997-98 Bulls finished the regular season 62-20 before winning the NBA title, capping their second three-peat in a span of eight years.
In that title series, the Bulls beat the Utah Jazz in six games, with Jordan scoring the game-winning basket to seal the victory with 5 seconds to go. He was named the Finals’ most valuable player.
Jordan retired after the season, before returning for two years with the Washington Wizards beginning in 2001. He’s now a Basketball Hall of Famer who owns the basketball team Charlotte Hornets.
Muay Thai legend Buakaw Banchamek beat Japanese MMA star Kota Miura by technical knockout in the third round of their Rajadamnern World Series’ exhibition match in Bangkok on Friday night.
Buakaw started slowly in the first round as he sized up his younger opponent, an internet heartthrob in Japan. The Thai veteran became more aggressive in the second round, launching a series of head kicks and flying knees while slipping the occasional counterpunch from Miura. In the final round, Buakaw launched a barrage of punches, flying knees and kicks to the head of his opponent, driving him into a corner with no chance of escape. The referee stepped in to protect the outclassed Japanese star from further punishment, declaring a technical knockout.
Buakaw is considered to be among the all-time greatest Muay Thai practitioners, having won the K-1 World MAX Champion, Shoot Boxing World Cup and World Muaythai Council World Championship in a career spanning over 250 wins.
This was his first return to Rajadamnern Stadium for 18 years, taking place ahead of his bare-knuckle fighting debut at BKFC Thailand on September 3.
Miura is the son of Japanese football great Kazuyoshi Miura. Also known as “King Kazu”, he rose to stardom after making his MMA debut last year.
Friday’s three-round exhibition was billed as Muay Thai versus kickboxing and helped to relaunch Bangkok’s historic fighting venue after the pandemic. Rajadamnern opened in 1945 and is known as Thailand’s oldest Muay Thai stadium.
The fight took place alongside eight other Muay Thai matches in an event dubbed “KAT Presents Legend of Rajadamnern: Kickboxing Exhibition”.
Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag urged fans to stay unified ahead of Monday’s (August 22) Premier League clash with Liverpool as some supporters plan to protest against the club’s American owners, the Glazer family, before the game.
United have come under fire from fans after losing both their opening games to sit at the bottom of the league table and also failing to secure transfer targets in the close season.
“I can only say the owners want to win and the fans, we want them behind the club,” Ten Hag told reporters on Friday (August 19).
“And I can understand sometimes but I am not that long in the club to see all the backgrounds. We have to fight together and be unified.”
United, who won the last of their record 20 English league titles back in 2013, will be looking for their first top-flight points under Ten Hag when they host Liverpool on Monday.
They have been handed an early boost with forward Anthony Martial back in training after missing the last two games with a hamstring injury, though it remains to be seen if he will be involved in the match.
Ten Hag was asked about Cristiano Ronaldo’s future at the club and the Dutch manager reiterated that the Portugal forward remains in his plans, amid intense speculation over the 37-year-old’s future.
“I don’t know why he’s a particular focus after Saturday, it was the team performance and the whole team’s attitude, including Ronaldo,” Ten Hag said. “He’s in our plans, that’s what I can say.”
Ten Hag said the team would stick to their game plan against Liverpool, who are 12th after getting a draw in both their games so far.
“I know the rivals, we are the rivals. We have to win every game, especially this game,” he added.
“It’s not different to motivate this team because my experience with them is they work really good on the training pitch,” he said.
“Of course, I would prefer to play them after they win 5-0 but it isn’t dreamland, that’s how it is. We drew twice too, so is it better to play us? I don’t know,” Juergen Klopp told reporters on Friday.
“We have to deal with all the situations. The whole world will watch it, let’s see how these heavyweights deal with the situation.”
Klopp’s side have pumped in 13 goals in their last three league meetings with United but the German said they cannot dwell on those results heading into the contest.
“The last two results, I knew already wouldn’t help this time. I couldn’t be less interested in the results from last season… It helps United to be more motivated if that’s possible,” Klopp said.
“This is a completely different game in a completely different situation.
“United can change nothing or everything, so it’s tricky preparation-wise, but it’s early and we don’t have a lot of info. It’s tough… United away will never be easy.”
Klopp said defender Joe Gomez will start after coming off the bench in their 1-1 draw with Crystal Palace while forward Roberto Firmino is also available after shaking off a minor muscle issue.
