Tempers boil over as Spurs grab late 2-2 draw at Chelsea

Harry Kane headed in a last-gasp equaliser to earn Tottenham Hotspur a barely-deserved 2-2 draw in a feisty Premier League derby at Chelsea that ended with both managers being shown red cards after the final whistle on Sunday (August 14).

Kane glanced home Ivan Perisic’s corner in the sixth minute of stoppage time to salvage a point for the visitors who have now won only once in their last 38 visits to Stamford Bridge.

Reece James seemed to have sealed the points for the dominant hosts with a 77th-minute strike after Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg had equalised for Tottenham in the 68th minute.

Centre back Kalidou Koulibaly marked his home debut in style by volleying Chelsea in front from a corner in the 19th minute and the hosts totally dominated the opening period.

Chelsea wasted several chances to increase their lead with Raheem Sterling blazing one great chance over and it was easy to understand Tuchel’s frustration when Hojbjerg levelled.

Tuchel was furious that the goal was allowed, believing Kai Havertz had been fouled in the build-up, and clashed with Conte.

Havertz then spurned a glorious chance to put Chelsea back in front but the hosts did reclaim their lead when the excellent James fired past Hugo Lloris from a pass by Raheem Sterling — a goal that sent Tuchel joyfully racing down the touchline.

Tuchel’s mood darkened though as Kane snatched a draw with his 42nd goal in London derbies — one behind the record of former Arsenal forward Thierry Henry.

The two managers clashed again after an aggressive handshake before being separated by their coaching staff.

Chelsea and Tottenham, who finished third and fourth respectively last season, both have four points from two games.

Tottenham arrived full of confidence but were second-best for most of the game after allowing Koulibaly the freedom of the penalty area to volley superbly past Lloris.

Conte’s side could not make inroads and Chelsea were faster and sharper, with Mason Mount close to scoring and Ruben Loftus-Cheek inches away from putting in a header before half-time.

It was a similar story after the break with Loftus-Cheek looking poised to score after a storming run into the area, seconds before Sterling blazed over the crossbar.

Kane wasted Tottenham’s best opportunity on a rare counter-attack but Tottenham levelled when Chelsea lost the ball in their area and Hojbjerg drilled a shot inside the post.

Tuchel and Conte were both shown yellow cards for their part in the ensuing touchline melee but it seemed Tuchel would have the last laugh when Chelsea cut through Tottenham’s defence and Sterling played in James to beat Lloris.

It was Tottenham who went home happier though, thanks to Kane.

“Well, you know, I just compared it to two players who have a bit of a fight on the field, but nothing happens, nobody gets injured, and the players, if you have a hard tackle, a fair tackle and you don’t go later and apologise and there’s no need.” THOMAS TUCHEL, ON HIS SCUFFLE WITH CONTE.

“It’s Premier League football and the two managers got involved today because both of us were fighting for our teams, and that was it. Nobody got insulted, nobody got hurt, we didn’t have a fistfight and something, so, for me it’s not a big deal. It was part of it today, it boiled of course, and it heated up, but nothing bad, and it was, I don’t know, it was today part of the game. It’s like this.”

TUCHEL: “We fought both for our teams and it happens. It’s so close here, it was so, it was such an intense match, and both dugouts are very, very close and so it got a bit heated from both of us.”

REPORTER: “You enjoyed it, didn’t you?”

TUCHEL: “Yes, and I think he enjoyed it as well. It was nothing bad guys. Nothing bad.”

While Conte said about problem between him and Tuchel : “The most important thing is always football”

“I think that it’s not so important. It’s not so important. The most important thing is always football, and to speak about the game. The game was an intensive game, and for us, this game was really tough. But you know very well that when you come here and to play against Chelsea away is always difficult and they have a really good team.” Conte said

“Yeah, but honestly, I, and then the referee showed me a red card, but he didn’t understand the dynamic, what happened, okay? But it’s okay, I have to accept, and, but I repeat, this is not a big problem. I think this is not important. If there is a problem, the problem is between me and the other coach. Not for the others.”

“But I don’t enjoy. I think that for what happened, I think we did enjoy, yeah, and yeah, but next time will be, we’ll pay more attention and just shake the hand, and we solve the problem. Yeah, he stays his bench, I stay in my bench and we finish with the staff on one side, our staff, my staff on our side and no problem about this. It will be a, it would be a pity if for this situation we’ll miss the next game, yeah.”

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has stated his desire to “change quickly” after the team’s 4-0 defeat to Brentford on Saturday.

Ten Hag: WE'RE WORKING ON IT TOGETHER

The boss is adamant that hard work, togetherness and new blood will help overturn a winless start to the Premier League season after the defeats to Brighton and Brentford.

“We are, as a team, in a difficult process,” Ten Hag admitted to Sky Sports.

“We expected a different start. It seems like what happened in the past, last season, we have to change that very quickly.

“We need new players, we need quality players and we will do everything to convince them to come.”

Ten Hag acknowledged United’s recent struggle to overcome challenging moments after his side were beaten by the Bees.

“Yeah, this is the truth,” he said. “We have seen it and we have to work on it.

“Only when we stick together and we work hard we’ll [get] over it. The belief, you have to bring on the pitch for yourself and as a team.”

Liverpool are set to welcome Naby Keita back into their squad for Monday’s visit of Crystal Palace to Anfield.

Liverpool v Crystal Palace: Team news

The midfielder missed the Reds’ opening-day draw at Fulham due to illness, but is ready to return to contention for the encounter with the Eagles.

Jürgen Klopp’s men will, however, be without the services of Thiago Alcantara, Curtis Jones and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain in terms of midfield options.

Kostas Tsimikas could also be back after a knock kept him out of the trip to Craven Cottage last weekend.

Klopp said on Friday: “A couple of boys are coming back: Naby will be back for Monday and Kostas will train today for the first time so he might be back as well. That’s the situation.”

Two members of the squad are in line for milestones should they be named in the XI against Palace: Trent Alexander-Arnold would clock up his 150th Premier League start, while Roberto Firmino’s would be his 200th.

Meanwhile, Palace midfielder Michael Olise is closing in on a return following his foot injury, though the fixture will come too soon for James McArthur and James Tomkins.

“Michael trained all week with the team, so there is a chance that he will be with the squad,” Eagles boss Patrick Vieira told reporters. “The other two, it will be too short for them.

“[Nathan Ferguson] just had a setback. It’s too early to talk about but obviously he didn’t train in the last couple of days with the team.”

Muay Thai fighter Petchkeng Kaiyanghadao on Saturday became the second Thai boxer in recent weeks to die after sustaining a brain injury in the ring.

Second Thai Muay Thai fighter dies from brain injury after bout

Petchkeng’s martial arts club at the Rajamangala University of Technology Phra Nakhon said the fighter succumbed to the injury after a bout in Malaysia.

The death of Petchkeng, whose real name was Kittichai Chaengkha, comes just three weeks after Panphet Phadungchai succumbed to injuries suffered in the ring.

Panphet, real name Sarayut Klinming, died from a brain injury at a Bangkok hospital on July 23, nine days after being knocked out by a spinning elbow in a bout against French boxer Anthony TF at Thupatemi stadium in Pathum Thani. His death led to calls for better medical care at ringside during Muay Thai fights.

On its Facebook page, the university’s martial arts club said Petchkeng, who was an alumnus of the university’s liberal arts faculty, was considered a skilled Muay Thai fighter.

It added that he had led fighters from the Phatthalung club where Petchkeng was a trainer to success during the 47th Thailand National Games in Sisaket between March 5 and 25.

“The fight sports club would like to express our deepest condolences and send moral support to Kittichai’s family,” the page said.

Meanwhile, Nuttadaj Vachirarattanawong, owner of Petchyindee Academy Muay Thai gym in Bangkok, said on his Facebook page that he and his brother had handed 100,000 baht to Kittichai’s family.

He added that he was worried about Kittichai’s young son who is only 1 year and 8 months old.

Shambolic Man United suffer humiliating 4-0 loss at Brentford

A shambolic Manchester United side conceded four goals in the opening 35 minutes in a 4-0 drubbing at Brentford on Saturday (August 13) as their woeful start to the Premier League season continued.

Shambolic Man United suffer humiliating 4-0 loss at Brentford

United’s seventh successive away league defeat was assured long before the interval as Brentford took ruthless advantage of a catalogue of errors by the visitors.

The rout began in the 10th minute when United keeper David de Gea allowed a weak shot by Josh Dasilva to slip past him.

Things got worse for United eight minutes later when De Gea played the ball out to former Brentford player Christian Eriksen who was caught in possession and Mathias Jensen slotted home.

When United’s defence failed to deal with a corner and Ben Mee glanced in a close-range header to make it 3-0 the Brentford fans were ecstatic while United’s new manager Erik ten Hag looked ashen-faced in his technical area.

Brentford’s fourth was a gem as Ivan Toney delivered a diagonal ball to Bryan Mbeumo from a counter-attack and Mbeumo calmly beat De Gea.

Ten Hag made three substitutions at half-time with Raphael Varane, Tyrell Malacia and Scott McTominay coming on but despite a slight improvement United offered little fight.

Brentford’s fans serenaded their players with “Hey Jude” at the final whistle while United’s players looked crestfallen as they trudged off rock bottom of the table having also lost their opener at home to Brighton & Hove Albion.

It was the first time since 1960 that United have conceded at least six goals in their first two matches of a top-flight season and the first time they have lost their opening two matches since 1992 when they went on to win the title.

This side, however, looks woefully inadequate to mount any kind of challenge and Ten Hag, who was taunted by the Brentford fans, appears to have a huge job on his hands.

The Dutchman is the first Manchester United manager to lose his first two games in charge since John Chapman in 1921.

For Brentford, whose starting line-up cost in the region of 55 million compared to the more than 400 million of United’s, have picked up four points in their first two games.

United had Cristiano Ronaldo back in their starting line-up but the Portuguese forward barely got a look in.

The confidence drained out of United from the moment De Gea allowed Dasilva’s shot to end up in the back of the net.

Eriksen, who got a mixed reception from Brentford’s fans, then inadvertently gifted his former club their second as United looked shellshocked by the energy of their hosts who went on to record their biggest top-flight victory since 1938.

Things will not get any easier for United whose next game is against Liverpool.

Ten Hag convinced Man United can still bring in much-needed new signings

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag said on Friday he is convinced the club can bring in some much-needed new signings before the transfer window closes at the start of next month, and insisted he does not want to see Marcus Rashford leave.

Ten Hag convinced Man United can still bring in much-needed new signings

While United have been able to strengthen some areas of the squad in the transfer window, which closes on Sept. 1, fans have been left frustrated that the club have been unable to bring in another forward and central midfielder.

There was anger this week after the club reportedly bid for 33-year-old Bologna striker Marko Arnautovic, a move former defender Gary Neville labelled “desperate”, but Ten Hag has faith he will be given more to work with soon enough.

“We have to,” Ten Hag told a news conference on Friday (August 12) to look ahead to their trip to Brentford, when asked if he is confident the right players can be brought in.

“I am convinced we will have (a better squad). I’m happy, I think we’re cooperating really well, I cannot tell you about any individuals, I cannot talk about players under contract at other clubs.”

Rashford, who has struggled for form over the past few seasons at United, has been linked with a move to Ligue 1 champions Paris St Germain in the French media, but he is going nowhere, according to his manager.

“He’s a really important player,” Ten Hag added. “You have seen from the first day I’m here, I’m really happy with him, I don’t want to lose him, he’s definitely in our plans at Manchester United.”

Looking to quickly get over their opening day loss at home to Brighton & Hove Albion, Ten Hag remained tight-lipped over whether last season’s top goalscorer Cristiano Ronaldo will be fit to start at Brentford.

“He (Ronaldo) had a good training week,” Ten Hag said. “He’s had two half games and for the starting XI we will see tomorrow. My decision, I keep it.”
