An online version of the Brics Games is expected to enhance mutual understanding and people-to-people exchanges in an innovative and safe way, Chinese organisers said.

China’s 2022 Brics Games to be staged online

The 2022 Brics Games, organised by China as host of the 14th Brics Summit in June, will open on September 1 with competitions and demonstrations of breakdancing, chess and wushu (Chinese martial arts). All events are set to take place online as the multisport event adapts to the challenges of the Covid-19 pandemic.

The Games will feature both professional and amateur athletes from all five members of the Brics group - Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa.

China launched the games’ official website on Wednesday as a portal for registration, video uploads, scoring, judging and results.

Athletes signing up for breakdancing and wushu will have their uploaded performances scored by professional judging panels across several categories. Those competing in chess will play against each other live on chess.com.

Official registration for competitions begins on August 15.

The website also features a designated channel for demonstration of traditional sports and exercise activities originating in each of the five Brics nations, such as yoga from India, dragon boat racing from China, and jiujitsu from Brazil. Enthusiasts can upload practice videos and routines on the website and interact with each other.

As a representative of the organising committee, China’s Sports Minister Gao Zhidan welcomed participants from Brics countries while hailing the games as a gala event enhancing friendship and respect.

“Sport is a unique and indispensable part of Brics people-to-people exchanges,” Gao said in a speech posted on the game’s official website, 2022bricsgames.com.

“Over the past five years, Brics sports exchange and cooperation have been continuously deepened. The Brics Sports Ministers’ Meeting and the Brics Games have become institutional highlight events. Brics sports cooperation makes active contributions to advancing sports development, promoting traditional sports culture and deepening mutual understanding and friendship among peoples.

“Facing the challenges of the pandemic, we creatively moved the games online. I believe the 2022 Brics Games will play a unique role in improving Brics sports development and promoting understanding and friendship in the Brics sports community and among Brics peoples and contribute to fostering high-quality partnership and embarking on a new journey of Brics cooperation through the power of sport.”

I owe my achievements in snooker to my mother: Wattana

Thai people are celebrating August 12 as the 90th birthday of Her Majesty Queen Sirikit, the Queen Mother. August 12 is also commemorated every year as Mother’s Day in Thailand.

I owe my achievements in snooker to my mother: Wattana

One person for whom his mother means a lot is snooker legend James Wattana, one of Thailand’s most successful sportspersons. The Nation met Wattana to find out how his mother inspired and paved the way for his achievements.

Many people may recognise Wattana as the best Thai snooker player ever. At his peak, he was acclaimed as among the best in the world, ranking as high as No. 3.

Wattana is quick to acknowledge that he owes his success to the support he got from his mother Ployrung Puoabaom.

I owe my achievements in snooker to my mother: Wattana

Wattana said in the interview that his mother never forbade him from playing snooker even when there was a stigma of gambling around the sport 30 years ago.

He made a few thousand baht winning against adult players before he was sent to practise in England. It was his mother who arranged the funds for his overseas training.

“When I was a child, I saw people playing snooker because my mother opened a snooker club,” Wattana told the Nation.

“I was able to play snooker when I was growing up as my mother did not forbid me. She only told me to not abandon my studies.”

“This was something I did not know when I went to England, when I was 14-15 years old. I thought my uncle had provided the funds.

“It was only later, I came to know that my mother had sold a car to raise funds for me to practise snooker in England.”

Wattana continues to play and enjoy snooker, including winning the gold medal at the 2021 Southeast Asian Games in Vietnam. He also won the Phuket Cup recently, which is the first event of the U Snooker 6 Red Thailand Ranking Circuit 2022.

Nong-O determined to retire Liam Harrison at ONE Fight Night 1

#SootinClaimon.Com : ขอบคุณแหล่งข้อมูล : หนังสือพิมพ์ The Nation.

Nong-O Gaiyanghadao may have spoken openly of his admiration for his upcoming opponent, Liam Harrison, but when the One bantamweight Muay Thai world champion steps into the Circle with him on Saturday, 27 August, all that will fall by the wayside.

Nong-O determined to retire Liam Harrison at ONE Fight Night 1

“Hitman” is set to challenge Nong-O for his divisional strap in the co-main event at One Fight Night 1: Moraes v Johnson II, and the Thai legend is confident that despite his rival’s recent form, he’ll leave the Singapore Indoor Stadium with the belt still on his shoulder.

“[Harrison] really has a good momentum now. He is now riding on several fight winning streaks. He is completely filled with confidence. But throughout his winning streak, he has never fought a true Muay Thai fighter like me before,” Nong-O said.

“And this time, he will find out what the real challenge is. I don’t care how much momentum he built. I’m not afraid of him at all. I’ll stop his momentum,” Nong-O said.

Nong-O’s record in One speaks for itself. The 35-year-old striker is riding a perfect eight-fight winning streak into his upcoming battle, including a staggering five One world title defenses. He has taken out the likes of Rodlek PK.Saenchai and Saemapetch Fairtex during this time, and his career record sits at 262-54-10.

The Evolve MMA standout also has a laundry list of achievements away from The Home of Martial Arts that includes four Lumpinee Stadium world championships in four different weight classes and a Rajadamnern Stadium world championship.

The challenge from Harrison is welcomed, though, and the British star’s unbelievable performance against Muangthai PK.Saenchai in April makes him the man to beat in the stacked division.

That said, the world champion is looking to blast through his opponent to continue his reign of dominance, and he has a feeling that his performance may cause Harrison to rethink his career path.

“I believe Liam is still in good fitness because he trains regularly. I think he can continue on in his career for at least one to two years or more if he takes good care of his health. I feel that it may be too early for him to retire. If he believes he can go on, he will,” Nong-O said.

“However, in this upcoming fight, if I can knock him out, I think he has a 50-50 chance to think about his retirement.”

One Fight Night 1: Moraes v Johnson II will broadcast live on AIS Play at 7 a.m. Indochina Time (ICT) on Saturday, August 27. The main card will follow on AIS Play at 9 a.m. ICT. Thairath TV32 will air a same-day delay at 10:30 p.m. ICT.

Also, tickets for One Fight Night 1: Moraes v Johnson II on 27 August at the Singapore Indoor Stadium are now available at onefc.com/tickets.

Thailand’s national under-19 football team lost to Vietnam 0-1 in a four-team tournament.

Thailand’s U-19 footy team goes down to Vietnam 0-1

Thailand locked horns with Vietnam in the third match of the 2022 Thanh Niên Cup on Tuesday in Bình Dương, Vietnam.

The Thai team had received four points in its first two matches while Vietnam was ahead with six.

Head coach Salvador Valero Garcia decided to rotate several players but retained core players like Kakana Khamyok, Phuwanet Thongkui and Thanawat Saipetch.

Vietnam booted in their solitary goal in the 14th minute, courtesy Nguyễn Đình Bắc. Thanakrit Laorkai tried to score an equaliser in the 49th minute but it was neatly saved by the Vietnamese goalkeeper.

The match ended without Thailand scoring a goal so it failed to gain any points.

The kingdom earned a total four points in three earlier matches – the same as Malaysia – but the Thai team had a lower goal score so will now go up against Myanmar, which lost its previous three matches, for third place.

The Thailand-Myanmar game takes place on Thursday at 3.30 pm.
