Serena Williams announces upcoming retirement from tennis

Serena Williams said on Tuesday (August 9) that she is “evolving away from tennis” as she detailed her upcoming retirement from the sport that she dominated for the majority of her career with 23 singles Grand Slam titles.

Serena Williams announces upcoming retirement from tennis

On Monday, Williams played only her second singles match since she returned to action at Wimbledon in June after a year-long absence from competition, beating Spain’s Nuria Parrizas Diaz to reach the second round of the Toronto Open.

But the 40-year-old said after that match that she could see the light at the end of the tennis tunnel in her career before suggesting the U.S. Open starting this month could be her swansong.

“I have never liked the word retirement,” Williams wrote in a Vogue article https://www.vogue.com/article/serena-williams-retirement-in-her-own-words?utm_source=twitter&utm_brand=vogue&mbid=social_twitter&utm_social-type=owned&utm_medium=social.

“It doesn’t feel like a modern word to me. I’ve been thinking of this as a transition but I want to be sensitive about how I use that word, which means something very specific and important to a community of people.

“Maybe the best word to describe what I’m up to is evolution. I’m here to tell you that I’m evolving away from tennis, toward other things that are important to me.

“A few years ago I quietly started Serena Ventures, a venture capital firm. Soon after that, I started a family. I want to grow that family.”

Williams won her last Grand Slam in 2017 and has been chasing an elusive 24th crown that will draw her level with Margaret Court who holds the record for most majors.

She came tantalisingly close to achieving that feat, featuring in four major finals since giving birth to daughter Olympia in 2017.

“There are people who say I’m not the GOAT (greatest of all time) because I didn’t pass Court’s record, which she achieved before the ‘Open era’ that began in 1968,” former world number one Williams said.

“I’d be lying if I said I didn’t want that record. Obviously I do. But day to day, I’m really not thinking about her. If I’m in a Slam final, then yes, I’m thinking about that record. Maybe I thought about it too much, and that didn’t help.”

Williams later talked in an Instagram post about the time to move in a “different direction.”

“That time is always hard when you love something so much,” she added. “My goodness do I enjoy tennis.

“But now, the countdown has begun. I have to focus on being a mom, my spiritual goals and finally discovering a different, but just exciting Serena. I’m gonna relish these next few weeks.”

‘Every match was a battle, now this is a dream’ – Benzema on the Super Cup

Real Madrid are looking forward to Wednesday’s (August 10) UEFA Super Cup in Helsinki as Carlo Ancelotti’s side attempt to win the trophy for a fourth time by beating Eintracht Frankfurt.

'Every match was a battle, now this is a dream' - Benzema on the Super Cup

The European and Spanish champions completed a solid pre-season and striker Karim Benzema told reporters on Tuesday (August 9) that Real were happy with their preparations and want to have a dream start to the new campaign by winning European soccer’s ceremonial curtain raise.

“Every match was a battle so this is a dream we can achieve tomorrow by winning. It is a good and important match for us. We had a good pre-season and we are all ready and we will try to win the game.” Benzema said.

On Tuesday, Ancelotti joked with reporters by saying that if Benzema got sick, the team would have to adapt.

“Right now it is impossible to replace Karim (Benzema), there is no player in the world capable of replacing Karim so if he gets a cold we have to adapt.” CARLO ANCELOTTI REAL MADRID COACH Said.

Benzema’s performances last season were praised by his team mates as the France international scored 44 goals in 46 appearances. Since Cristiano Ronaldo left the club in 2018, Benzema has scored 131 goals and is integral to Real’s success.

“It is different. After Cristiano (Ronaldo) left it is true that I scored many more goals but when he was here I was playing a different game, passing and many more things. He helped me a lot on the pitch and off the pitch but I knew I could do more and when he left it was the right time to change my style, my ambition and so far I have done well.” Benzema said

Wednesday´s match is the first time that both teams face each other in an official match since Real Madrid defeated the German side 7-3 in the 1960 European Cup final in Glasgow.

Semi-automated offside technology (SAOT), which uses special cameras that tracks body points on players, will be used for the match. English referee Michael Oliver will be the onfield official.

He said that the move led him to a world that he had never experienced before, including a new language, culture, and livelihood.

Kawin said that the competition was fierce and he faced pressure every day, but it was good pressure. There were both joyful and sad moments while he learnt several things on and off the pitch.

He also thanked his family and Thai fans for taking care of him while he was playing in foreign countries, including his former teammates.

World Athletics has certified Thai sprinter Puripol Boonson as the new 100 metres world record holder in the under-18 category.

Puripol confirmed as new 100m world record holder in U18 category

Puripol, 16, ran 10.09 seconds in the semi-final of the 100m at the 2022 World Athletics U20 Championships in Colombia last Tuesday (August 2).

The Thai sprint phenomenon set the new U18 record at the age of just 16 years and 210 days.

However, his disappointing time of 10.12s in the final saw him narrowly miss out on a medal at the championships.

His semi-final run shattered US sprinter Anthony Schwartz’s previous U18 world record of 10.15s.

Meanwhile, Puripol currently lies third in the list of all-time fastest 200m runners in the U18 category, with a personal best of 20.19s. Erriyon Knighton holds the U18 world record of 19.84s while Jamaican legend Usain Bolt is second on the list with 20.13s.

The previous Thai national U18 record for the 100m was held by Jirapong Meenapra, who ran 10.45s on July 11, 2009. That time stands at 231st in the world ranking, which is now topped by Puripol.

Guardiola hails two goal Haaland’s attitude

Pep Guardiola expressed his admiration for Erling Haaland’s attitude after the striker’s Man of the Match performance against West Ham United

Guardiola hails two goal Haaland's attitude

The Norwegian got his Premier League career off to a perfect start at the London Stadium, where he scored both goals as Manchester City cruised to a 2-0 win.

Haaland opened the scoring from the penalty spot, coolly sending Alphonse Areola the wrong way after he was tripped by the Hammers’ goalkeeper and he wrapped up the three points with a composed strike to finish off a slick passing move.

The 22-year-old came into the game having drawn a blank on his City debut, when he missed a golden opportunity to score as we fell to a 3-1 defeat to Liverpool in the Community Shield.

But the way in which he seized the ball for the penalty suggested that miss certainly hadn’t lingered and Guardiola was particularly impressed with the confidence displayed by his new No.9.

“I know how he handled a lot of criticism this week,” he said at his post-match press conference.

“He was really calm, he trained really well but the way he took the ball for the penalty I said ‘I like it’.

“So direct and I think if someone is taking the ball, he would punch them in the face even though they are his mates!

“And that is a pretty good sign. To be so confident, I like it.”

Guardiola hails two goal Haaland's attitude

Haaland has form when it comes to goalscoring debuts, having netted a hat-trick in his first appearance for Borussia Dortmund.

Speaking in his post-match interview, he expressed some frustration that history hadn’t repeated itself against West Ham and, whilst Guardiola was delighted with his performance, he was pleased to hear his striker exhibiting the hunger he feels all top players have.

“That’s good I like it,” added Pep.

“I was fortunate as manager to be with Messi and when he scored two, he wanted three, and when scored three he wants four.

“The top goalscorers are never satisfied, they are always hungry and starving and want more.”

Guardiola hails two goal Haaland's attitude

In Haaland, City have signed the type of out-and-out striker that we’ve been without since Sergio Aguero’s departure and his two-goal showing in East London highlighted the threat he’ll bring to the Premier League champions.

Guardiola acknowledged the striker adds a new dimension to his team, but says the rest of the team have an important role to play in getting the best out of the him, as was evidenced by the incisive move that led to our second goal.

“Erling scoring the two goals, it’s important for him and the team and for us and it’s another weapon we have now.

“But at the same time he’s not going to solve all our problems, he’s going to add something to us as a team. That’s what we are looking for.

“Today, the two goals they were balls in front the centre of defence and we had the feeling we could find him more.

“In the past we didn’t have a reference like him and now have it again but at the same time the guys have to put the ball there, especially in transitions.”

“It was an incredible second goal and incredible action from Jack.

“The ball was fed to him, he keeps the ball and attracts the opponents and found a pocket and when this happens with Kevin, with one guy, it’s difficult to stop.”

Ten Hag era at United begins with home defeat to Brighton

#SootinClaimon.Com : ขอบคุณแหล่งข้อมูล : หนังสือพิมพ์ The Nation.

New manager Erik ten Hag saw the depth of the crisis at Manchester United when his side fell to a 2-1 Premier League defeat by Brighton & Hove Albion at Old Trafford on Sunday (August 7), with German Pascal Gross scoring twice.

Ten Hag era at United begins with home defeat to Brighton

United fans’ hopes that the off-season would mark a turning point have faded, with the club failing to make major moves yet in the transfer market and there was a grim familiarity to the club’s opening match.

The former Ajax coach witnessed a performance that was every bit as disjointed as those produced under his predecessors Ralf Rangnick and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer last season.

“I think it was a good start. And then after, we dropped down a level. We dropped down in belief. And we made mistakes and the opponent punished us. But I think it’s a good opponent. They’ve worked long (a long time) together. And when you make mistakes, you get punished for that against such teams.” ERIC TEN HAG Said

“I think we should have done better. That’s clear. But I know also that it will not come overnight. Sometimes we play better in the preseason. Today, we had a really bad period in the first half. And now we have to learn from that. That’s also clear.”

The sense that this was a continuation of last year’s decline began before kick-off where there were yet more loud and angry protests against United’s owners, the American Glazer family, under the South Stand.

If that felt familiar, then the sight of Scott McTominay and Fred in midfield as United laboured against Graham Potter’s superbly drilled side was verging on deja vu.

“I think from day to day, game to game, we have to win every game. That has to be the attitude. So, it’s definitely clear that we are not happy with this game. And we have to take the lessons and move forward.” TEN HAG add.

United had been shambolic in their 4-0 loss at Brighton in May and, even with debuts for defender Lisandro Martinez and midfielder Christian Eriksen, little felt new or changed about the performance.

Brighton took the lead on the half-hour with Leandro Trossard finding former United forward Danny Welbeck who squared the ball to the back post for Gross to slot home.

Nine minutes later, Gross doubled the lead, with his sixth career goal against United, after David De Gea had poorly pushed out a Solly March drive right into the path of the German who again made no mistake.

Ten Hag introduced Cristiano Ronaldo in the 53rd minute and the Portugal forward, who is reported to want to leave the club, provided the spark for United’s attempted comeback.

The home side gave themselves a foothold in the 68th minute when a goalmouth scramble ended with Alexis Mac Allister turning the ball into his own net but Brighton held on for a second straight win against United and their first ever at Old Trafford.

Liverpool play out opening-day draw at Fulham

Liverpool played out a 2-2 draw with Fulham at Craven Cottage on the Premier League’s opening day.

Liverpool play out opening-day draw at Fulham

Jürgen Klopp’s side fell behind in the first half on Saturday lunchtime to a Alexsandar Mitrovic strike, before substitute Darwin Nunez levelled after the change of ends.

Mitrovic again put the hosts in front from the penalty spot though Salah struck in the final 10 minutes to earn the Reds a point.

First half

The hosts began the game on the front foot and signalled an instant threat inside the opening minute through Mitrovic who prodded a shot wide of the post.

Klopp’s side threatened for the first time on the 15-minute mark, seeing Luis Diaz curl an effort into the net only to be denied by the offside flag following Andy Robertson’s earlier forward run.

Salah’s header flew wide a short while later while Joel Matip was forced to block a drive from outside the box.

Fulham had the lead just after the half hour mark, Mitrovic leaping highest at the back-post to head home a Neeskens Kebano cross.

The Reds almost had an instant reply before half-time, though, as Diaz slid inches from Robertson’s low ball before the winger struck the woodwork with another dipping shot.

Second half

Liverpool made a double substitution early in the second period, introducing both Nunez and Harvey Elliott from the bench – the latter replacing Thiago in a forced change.

It was the hosts who almost struck again with Kebano hitting the post thanks to a well-hit shot from inside the box.

Nunez and Salah combined to force Marek Rodak into a point-blank save after the hour, though levelled for the Reds in an identical move just a minute later.

Salah delivered low from the right and the No.27 produced a clever flick to even the scoring.

Fulham cleared off the line from another Nunez effort while Diaz saw a volley deflected wide of the post.

Against the run of play, the hosts won a penalty as Virgil van Dijk tangled with Mitrovic after a swift counter.

Following a VAR check to confirm, the striker converted from 12-yards to restore the advantage for Marco Silva’s outfit.

The Reds responded and again levelled the encounter inside the final 10 minutes of the match.

A ball forward from Trent Alexander-Arnold found Nunez, whose touch fell to Salah to slide the loose ball into the net from close-in.

Jordan Henderson struck the crossbar from distance in added time though the Reds had to settle for a draw.

‘He had his penis out’: Athlete suffers mishap at World Championships

An Italian athlete dropped to last place in the 400 metres decathlon race at the 2022 World Athletics U20 Championships after suffering an embarrassing wardrobe malfunction.

‘He had his penis out’: Athlete suffers mishap at World Championships

Alberto Nonino began the race in Cali, Colombia strongly, overtaking two of his rivals on the bend. However, he slowed down noticeably in the final straight, grabbing his crotch as many as six times as his rivals surged past.

Nonino finished last in heat 2 with a time of 51.57 seconds.

Spanish sports journalist David Sanchez de Castro offered a graphic description of Nonino’s nightmare. “Last series of the 400 metres decathlon. The Italian Alberto Nonino in lane five begins very well but crosses the finishing line last. He had his penis out, literally,” he tweeted in Spanish.

“His penis escaped out of the side of his shorts and he had to hold it because it wasn’t allowing him to run properly which is normal when your dongle is swinging from side to side,” he added.

A clearly embarrassed Nonino pleaded with people not to send him viral clips of the incident. “I’m conscious it was obviously an accident and I’d like to tell you I’m aware of the reaction and you don’t need to send me the links to the blogs out there,” he wrote on Instagram.

“I’m trying to laugh about it now but immediately afterwards I felt terrible and I’m thankful to my friends and family for helping me get over what happened a few hours later.”

He also criticised the press. “The journalistic world worries about cases of bullying throughout Italy and around the world and then publishes these articles that for a more sensitive person could have done a lot of harm.”

Nonino eventually finished 15th in the decathlon with 7,054 points on Friday. Streaking ahead in first was Gabriel Emmanuel from the Netherlands with 7,860 points.
