Liverpool’s new striker Darwin Nunez scored a late goal on his debut as they drew first blood in this season’s rivalry with Manchester City after a 3-1 win in Saturday’s Community Shield.

Nunez has instant impact as Liverpool beat City in Community Shield

The Uruguayan, bought from Benfica for an initial fee of 75 million euros ($76.64 million), made himself an instant fan favourite after capping a lively appearance off the bench with a stoppage time goal to secure the first trophy of the season.

English champions City started their big close-season signing, Norway’s Erling Haaland but, in contrast to Nunez, he had a disappointing debut, missing several chances and struggling to combine with his new team mates.

However, another new City face — Argentine forward Julian Alvarez – found the target after coming on in the second half.

Trent Alexander-Arnold had opened the scoring, firing Juergen Klopp’s Liverpool side ahead in the 21st minute of the 100th edition of the annual clash between the league champions and FA Cup winners.

Thiago Alcantara floated the ball to Mohamed Salah on the right and the Egyptian laid it back to Alexander-Arnold whose first time shot curled into the far corner.

Haaland, brought in from Borussia Dortmund, missed two first half chances to mark his City debut with a goal but Pep Guardiola’s side were missing their usual fluency.

VAR REVIEW

It was another new striking addition who brought City level in the 70th minute when Phil Foden’s shot was parried by Adrian and with the ball spilling loose, former River Plate forward Alvarez pounced to net his first goal for the club.

The effort was initially ruled out for offside but a VAR review overturned the decision although the technology was soon to work against Guardiola’s side.

Referee Craig Pawson went to the monitor before ruling that City defender Ruben Dias had handled at close range from a Nunez header and Mohamed Salah drilled home the penalty to restore Liverpool’s lead in the 83rd minute.

Nunez then capped an eventful appearance from the bench, scoring with an angled header after Andy Robertson had nodded the ball into his path.

Haaland’s testing debut ended with him missing a sitter when Phil Foden’s shot was pushed out by Adrian and the blond forward blasted his shot against the bar and over.

“Our season started today and it was important for us to get off on the right foot,” said Alexander-Arnold, who was full of praise for 23-year-old Nunez’s impact.

“He won the penalty, scored a goal and looked very lively. He’s been bought in to score goals and he’s proved he can do that today,” he said.

“He’s a top player, a young player who is willing to learn. He’s bonded well with the lads. He came on with a point to prove”.

German champions Bayern Munich survived a late comeback from RB Leipzig to claim a 5-3 victory in the German Super Cup on Saturday (July 30) with an impressive first half attacking display and new signing Sadio Mane scoring on his debut.

Bayern survive Leipzig comeback to win 5-3 and lift German Super Cup

Bayern, aiming for an 11th consecutive Bundesliga title this season, were eager to prove they remained a serious attacking threat despite the departure of top striker Robert Lewandowski to Barcelona, and they did not have to wait long.

Jamal Musiala rifled in the opener in the 14th minute before Serge Gnabry cut through the Leipzig defence and delivered a perfect assist for Senegal international Mane, who joined from Liverpool, to tap in the second goal in the 31st.

Leipzig’s collapse looked complete in first half stoppage time when Musiala weaved his way into the box and set up Benjamin Pavard to drill the ball home.

Bayern’s backline was equally as effective in the first half with Leipzig having only one shot on goal in the 45 minutes.

That all changed after the break with the hosts hitting the woodwork in the 56th with substitute Andre Silva’s powerful header before Marcel Halstenberg went one better with his own header three minutes later to cut the deficit.

Serge Gnabry briefly restored Bayern’s three-goal cushion when he fired into the top of the net on the rebound after Thomas Mueller’s shot was palmed away by keeper Peter Gulacsi.

A 77th minute penalty by Christopher Nkunku made it 4-2 before Leipzig team mate Dani Olmo scored with a powerful shot to set up a nervous finale to an entertaining encounter.

However, late substitute Leroy Sane made sure of the first title of the season for Bayern, scoring on the break with the last kick of the game.

The Bundesliga season kicks off on Aug. 5.

Paul Stratton had a moment he will never forget on Friday night as he stepped foot in front of the Gwladys Street End at Goodison Park to fire Everton into a ‘4-0’ lead.

He wheeled off in front of the adoring crowd celebrating and kissing the Everton badge, on a night when Dwight McNeil scored a brace during his first taste of action for the Blues.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin opened the scoring in the first-half but it was the man of the moment, Paul, who stole the headlines as he was greeted by Calvert-Lewin and Frank Lampard after rounding off the scoring in L4.

In March, following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, the Liverpool Council worker cancelled his week off to ‘watch Netflix and eat Pringles’ and instead travelled to the Ukranian border to help the fleeing refugees amid the war.

WHAT’S ONE BIG CHANGE YOU WILL NOTICE AT OLD TRAFFORD?

Erik ten Hag will open a new chapter in Old Trafford’s history on Sunday when he leads his Manchester United team out for the first time at the Theatre of Dreams – and he will mark the start of the new era by taking up a new seat for the pre-season friendly versus Rayo Vallecano.

WHAT'S ONE BIG CHANGE YOU WILL NOTICE AT OLD TRAFFORD?

manutd.com reported : In a new lay-out agreed with Erik, the home and away dugouts have been permanently switched so that the United manager, staff and substitutes will now be sat in the seats to the west of the half-way line – the dugout previously occupied by the away team.

Erik approved the move after visiting Old Trafford for the first time in May and noting how the old away dugout was closer to the tunnel, and to the half of the pitch where substitutes warm up.

Switching sides will also position the home staff and players closer to the Stretford End – the traditional heart of the home support – and align the dugouts with the halves of the pitch in which the home and away teams warm up before the game.
The new layout will be in use for the first time in Sunday’s game against Rayo Vallecano, a day after the Reds play Atletico Madrid in Oslo. The two games against La Liga opposition on consecutive days will ensure that Erik is able to give the whole squad crucial game time ahead of next Sunday’s opening Premier League fixture against Brighton & Hove Albion at Old Trafford.

Quality of women’s Euros is ‘insane’, says Klopp

The women’s European Championship received a shining stamp of approval from Juergen Klopp on Thursday (July 28) after the Liverpool manager said he was blown away by the performances on display during the tournament.

Quality of women's Euros is 'insane', says Klopp

The tournament has had 92 goals in 30 matches and will reach its conclusion when hosts England and Germany play the final at Wembley on Sunday (July 31). Both teams have won every match so far and conceded only one goal each.

“I really have to say I love women’s football, it’s outstanding. The quality of the tournament is insane,” Klopp told reporters ahead of Liverpool’s Community Shield game against Manchester City.

Klopp also confirmed that Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson and forward Diogo Jota will play no part in their Community Shield game against Manchester City as they continue to recover from injuries.

Jota injured his thigh during a pre-season training session and Klopp did not give a potential return date but Alisson, who had an abdominal injury, will return in time for the first round of the Premier League season.

Klopp also confirmed Roberto Firmino is in his plans as the Brazilian forward, who has entered the final year of his contract, attracts the interest of European clubs.

“Bobby is the heart and soul of this team. That’s why I’m happy he has trained with us so far,” Klopp said. “For me there’s no doubt about his quality. He’s essential to us.”

Klopp said he was sad to see Sadio Mane move on after he switched to Bayern Munich but was glad the Senegalese forward stated his intentions early, which allowed Liverpool to find a replacement with Darwin Nunez joining the club last month.

“We lost Sadio who was a fixed lineup player for six years. He told us he wanted a new challenge,” Klopp said.

“He told us early enough and we accepted it. We had time to prepare that and that’s what we did.”

Liverpool lost the league title to City last season by one point and when asked if the Community Shield trophy was important, Klopp said they would take it seriously.

“It’s very important, it’s the last domestic cup competition we haven’t won yet so we’ll give it a try,” the German manager said.

“If you win it it’s a very important competition. But if you lose, it becomes less important,” he added with a smile.

Man City’s Laporte out until September following knee surgery

Manchester City defender Aymeric Laporte has undergone surgery for a knee injury and could be out until September, manager Pep Guardiola said on Friday (July 29) ahead of the Premier League champions’ Community Shield clash with FA Cup winners Liverpool.

Man City's Laporte out until September following knee surgery

The 28-year-old France-born Spain centre back missed City’s pre-season tour of the United States this month during which they beat Club America and Bayern Munich.

“Laporte is injured,” Guardiola told reporters before Saturday’s clash at Leicester City’s King Power Stadium.

“He had surgery. Last season he played the last few games with an injury, he made an incredible effort but he could not continue to do that.

“So far he’s doing really well. You have to be careful because it was his knee. If all goes well he will start to be with us in September.”

Guardiola said City were in the market to sign a left back following the departure of Oleksandr Zinchenko to Arsenal, with British media linking the champions with Brighton & Hove Albion’s Marc Cucurella.

“He is a Brighton player. I can’t say anything else,” Guardiola said.

City have signed forward Erling Haaland, midfielder Kalvin Phillips and goalkeeper Stefan Ortega and Guardiola said the trio would not take long to settle in.

‘Sunday, the King plays’: Ronaldo appears to confirm return to United squad

Cristiano Ronaldo could play his first match under new Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag after the Portuguese forward said ‘the King’ will be available for Sunday’s (July 31) friendly game against Rayo Vallecano.

'Sunday, the King plays': Ronaldo appears to confirm return to United squad

Ronaldo’s future at the Old Trafford club has been the subject of intense speculation after British media reported he told the club he wanted to leave so he can play in the Champions League.

The 37-year-old did not join the squad for their pre-season tour to Thailand and Australia, and he was not included in the squad for United’s friendly against Atletico Madrid in Oslo on Saturday (July 30).

Ronaldo has been taking to Instagram in recent days to shut down rumours of a move to other clubs and Friday (July 29) was no different.

“Sunday, the King plays,” wrote Ronaldo on a fan page’s post that highlighted his absence from the squad.

Ronaldo has a year left on his United contract and ten Hag said earlier this month that he was looking forward to working with the Portugal captain who was their top scorer last season with 24 goals in all competitions.

United, however, finished sixth in the league to miss out on Champions League qualification and will play in the second-tier Europa League this season.

Red-hot Patcharajutar Kongkraphan utilized her hot wedge to win back-to-back Thai WPGA Tour titles following a two-shot victory in the 5th “SAT-TWT Open” Road to World Ranking” at the Lake View Resort and Country Club in Petchaburi on Friday.

The 30-year-old sprinkled her round with seven birdies without a bogey to sign off with a 65 on 11 under-par-205 to claim her second straight title on the tour following her previous one at the Royal Hua Hin Golf Course two weeks ago.

“I played unbelievably well today. My wedge game really helps me this week as I hit so many good shots from around 100-yard distance for birdie opportunities. I’m so happy to be able to stay in control in the last three holes as it was so windy,” said Patcharajutar or known as P.K. for short among fellow players.

In fact, the Khon-Kaen based has been on a three-week winning streak, having won the 4th SAT-TWT Open, then on another tour at the Springfield Village Golf and Spa seven days ago and the 5th SAT-TWT Open.  She has won a total of 14 career titles to date.

“It’s amazing to have done it again. My confidence is getting higher and higher. I stick to my game plan and try to be as patient as I can,” added P.K. who won a lucrative cheque of Bt367,500 as the winner. Over the past three weeks, her income has grossed up to Bt891,000 from the hat-trick wins.

However, she will have to skip the sixth meet of the SAT-TWT Open next month as she is committed to compete in an invitational event in Indonesia.

“With the level that I’m playing at the moment, I dare to take my chance and go for my shots. But I still hope to keep improving,” she said.

At joint second were Aunchisa Utama and Princess Superal of the Philippines, each on nine under-par-207.

Aunchisa came back from a double bogey on the fifth hole and a bogey on the 10th hole to fire four birdies and finished with a 69, the same score carded by the Filipina who enjoyed a bogey free final round performance. Both will return home with the runner-up prize money of Bt186,690 apiece.

Round two leader Saraporn Chamchoi, with a double bogey and two bogeys against two birdies, ended with a 74 and a total seven under-par-209 which placed her at lone fourth.
The next SAT-TWT Open will stop at the Panorama Golf and Country Club in Nakhon Ratchasima  between August 10-12.

I am looking forward to see what’s next, says Vettel

Four-times world champion Sebastian Vettel on Thursday (July 28) announced his retirement from Formula One at the end of the 2022 season.

I am looking forward to see what's next, says Vettel

Vettel won his four titles with Red Bull and spent six seasons with Ferrari before joining British-based Aston Martin.

He made the announcement ahead of this weekend’s Hungarian Grand Prix, the 13th round of the season and last race before the August break.

“Yeah, I think that’s you know one of the great things. There’s a lot of things that will stay, I mean, a lot of things I will turn literally turn down. I will not be having the buzz of driving the cars anymore and racing, but the people stay, you know the friendships I made, the people I got to know, the memories I made. So, there’s a lot to take away and yeah, generally I’m looking forward so looking forward to, like I said, what’s next,” the 35-year-old German said.

His teammate Lance Stroll said Vettel was a great colleague while Alfa Romeo’s Valtteri Bottas laughed uncomfortably when asked about the vacant Aston Martin seat.

Red Bull’s Max Verstappen took a huge stride towards a second Formula One title with his seventh victory last Sunday in France. It left him a hefty 63 points — more than two race wins — clear of closest rival Leclerc at the top with 10 rounds remaining.

“I don’t really care about the points gap, for me it is trying to be perfect every weekend and it’s not once you have that gap you start to relax or something, I still want to win more races and that’s what we will try to do as a team, ” said the Dutch 24-year-old.

Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton, now on the longest streak of his career without a win, felt after finishing second in France that Hungary, where he has won a record eight times, could be a better weekend.

Mercedes are third overall, 126 points adrift of leaders Red Bull and 44 behind Ferrari, in the constructors’ standings.

Saemapetch set for electric rematch with Rittewada

#SootinClaimon.Com : ขอบคุณแหล่งข้อมูล : หนังสือพิมพ์ The Nation.

https://www.nationthailand.com/life/40018273

Saemapetch Fairtex will finally get the opportunity to redeem himself against Rittewada Petchyindee at ONE 160: Ok v Lee II on 26 August at the Singapore Indoor Stadium.

Saemapetch set for electric rematch with Rittewada

The Thai striking sensation first faced his compatriot at ONE: Nextgen II in November and suffered a devastating blow when his opponent landed a left elbow that caused enough damage for the doctor to step in and end the fight in the second round.

Saemapetch had been performing well and controlling the bout prior to the stoppage. He caught Rittewada with a right hook that sent his opponent tumbling backward at one point, and he also ate a spinning back elbow with ease.

The two striking stars threw heavy leather at each other, and that looked like it would have continued had Rittewada’s elbow not landed. With that, many fans were left wondering how the fight would have ended had they continued.

On 26 August, they’ll get their answer when the much-anticipated rematch kicks off the main card of ONE 160.

Saemapetch is a competitor with a laundry list of big wins to his name, including a decision victory against Serbian-American Ognjen Topic at One: Roots of Honor in April 2019 and a first-round knockout of Kulabdam “Left Meteorite” Sor. Jor. Piek Uthai at ONE: Full Blast in April 2021.

The 27-year-old boasts a record of 123-18-1 and is well-known on the Muay Thai circuit in Thailand, including at Lumpinee Stadium. His performances consistently feature his heavy left kicks, as the southpaw fighter favors setting up his combinations with a single jab-cross before utilizing his dangerous legs.

Saemapetch prefers to fight off the back foot and give his opponents plenty of space to try to close in, allowing him to continue maneuvering while setting up his punches and finishing with his powerful kicks.

If he can bring the same tenacity he did in the opening round of their first meeting, Rittewada will be in for a tough night.
