Lopburi-born Saraporn Chamchoi’s productive round of a 66 saw her soar to the lead after the second round of the fifth circuit of the Bt2.5 million “SAT-TWT Open” Road to World Ranking” at the Lake View Resort and Country Club in Petchaburi on Thursday.

Propelled by five birdies at the front nine plus one more after the turn, the 30-year-old golfer hit the day’s best score of six birdies without an error and will enter the final day with a total nine under-par-135, three shots ahead of Aunchisa Utama  and Filipina Princess Superal.

“I putted incredibly well today and hit more greens in regulations than yesterday. I felt more comfortable on the front nine when there was no rain, but it was raining on the back which was tough for me. So, I just tried to hang in there and played solidly,” said Saraporn who savoured a victory in March at the Watermill Golf Club and Resort in Nakhon Nayok.

Before this week, Saraporn hadn’t been so successful on the Thai WPGA Tour which runs this event, having to be content with a tied 20th at the Phoenix Gold Golf and Country Club (3rd circuit) as her best attempt in June. She hopes to improve her statistic tomorrow.

“I will go out there playing the same game plan. I’m not an aggressive player. I hope that I can putt well like today. I’m quite confident with my putter,” added Saraporn, having her eyes firmly fixed on celebrating her fifth crown this week. She will play alongside two contenders Aunchisa and Superal, the only foreigner in the field.

“It’s a great opportunity to play in the last group with great players. It will be an entertaining final round,” added Saraporn who has been spending more time in the gym this year to improve her fitness. And it paid dividends.

Aunchisa, also from Lopburi, almost enjoyed an error free round of five birdies until she bogeyed on the 16th hole to settle with a 68 and a total six under-par-138.

“I played according to my game plan by hitting to the right positions. At this course, you need to have a good game plan if you want to make birdies,” said the 32-year-old Aunchisa who clinched a title two months ago at the Royal Hill Golf Resort and Spa in Nakhon Nayok. However, her best finish on the Thai WPGA Tour was at tied seventh in the third circuit last month.

“I will try to maximize all my effort tomorrow but I don’t want to set my hope too high,” added Aunchisa who just came back from tournaments in Europe.

Superal, with five birdies against a lone bogey, hit a 68 and sit three shots back. Chommapat Pongthanarak  (67) and Kusuma Meechai (68) followed a stroke behind at joint fourth, each on 139.

Overnight leader Yupaporn Kawinpakorn, with an even par 72, was at tied sixth on 140 along with last circuit’s winner Patcharajutar Kongkraphan (70) and Nonthaya Srisawang (70).
A total of 74 players made the cut which was at 11 over-par-155.

Liverpool were beaten 1-0 by Red Bull Salzburg in Wednesday night’s pre-season clash.

Benjamin Sesko’s assured first-half finish put the Austrian champions ahead and the visitors were unable to find a way through to equalise.

Liverpool were beaten 1-0 by Red Bull Salzburg in Wednesday night's pre-season clash.

Jürgen Klopp did, however, give more important minutes to 22 players over the course of the game as the Reds prepare to kick off competitive action for 2022-23 in this weekend’s FA Community Shield.

The manager shuffled his starting XI again for the fourth outing of pre-season, with summer signings Fabio Carvalho and Darwin Nunez deployed in attack and James Milner the captain.

Liverpool settled into an ascendancy at Red Bull Arena as the hosts opted to wait for opportunities to spring counter-attacks with quick passes in behind.

With 10 on the clock Milner spotted the space Nunez had found between Salzburg’s two centre-backs and lofted the ball from deep on the left. The Uruguay international went for a first-time header that was caught with a dive by Nico Mantl.

Salzburg responded moments later as Joe Gomez’s pass was cut out at the edge of the box. He made amends by blocking Fernando’s thump towards goal, and Sesko whacked a shot too high on the follow-up.

At the midway point of the half Nunez again escaped his markers to deftly bring down Naby Keita’s knock over the top, but he was eventually thwarted by Oumar Solet and Bernardo as he tried to shimmy into a position to strike.

The No.27 then hit the crossbar with a firm drive on the angle having moved on to Isaac Mabaya’s nudged pass into the right channel of the area.

Salzburg should have broken the deadlock within seconds. Sesko pounced when Gomez misjudged a headed clearance and, after stepping around several tackles, saw his finish denied by Adrian. A near-empty goal waited for Fernando on the rebound, yet he clipped wide.

Slick approach play by the Reds allowed Keita to slide in Nunez to his right inside the box and the striker fired at goal only to see the effort blocked at the last.

But the hosts made no mistake in the 31st minute. Sesko spun away from Ibrahima Konate near the centre circle, exchanged passes with Noah Okafor and swept a clinical finish around Adrian for 1-0.

Adrian soon had to palm away a 20-yard curler from Luka Sucic and Fernando had the ball in the net from an offside position as Salzburg ended the period in buoyant fashion.

There were three Liverpool changes when the sides returned, with Andy Robertson, Roberto Firmino and Tyler Morton replacing Milner, Nunez and Keita.

Elliott sent a promising free-kick over the goalframe early in the second half and Carvalho’s clip across the six-yard area caused concern until Curtis Jones’ strike was blocked.

On the stroke of the hour mark, Klopp made eight more substitutions as Joel Matip, Virgil van Dijk, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Fabinho, Jordan Henderson, Thiago Alcantara, Luis Diaz and Mohamed Salah entered the fray.

Diaz was immediately on the front foot and from a speedy dribble along the left flank he started what would become a real chance to equalise.

The Colombia international pulled the ball back to Thiago, he moved it on to Henderson and the skipper in turn back to Diaz, whose prodded attempt was repelled by the right leg of Mantl.

Junior Adamu struck too high from a decent position on the counter, before Salah’s near-post finish was saved by Mantl and Firmino’s curler halted by the Salzburg goalkeeper.

By now the contest had settled into one of Liverpool attack versus Salzburg defence and the latter held firm to secure victory for the home side despite a series of late chances.

Fabinho fired straight at Mantl from the edge of the box, a cool Diaz conversion was chalked off for offside, and an Alexander-Arnold long-ranger was tipped out by Mantl.

Last-minute claims for a penalty were also rejected as Diaz went down under the challenge of Youba Diarra, who appeared to touch the ball too, inside the opposition area.

Unfancied Yupaporn Kawinpakorn relied on her splendid putts to fire an opening 68 to lead the opening round of the fifth circuit of the Bt2.5 million “SAT-TWT Open” Road to World Ranking”

Unfancied Yupaporn Grabs Opening Lead at 5th SAT-TWT Open

The 31 -year-old from Samut Prakarn generated five birdies with a lone bogey on the sixth hole to surge on top of the leader’s board with last circuit’s runner-up Ornnicha Kornsunthea, Chonnikarn Chaiyasith and Saraporn Chamchoi following a shot behind, each with a 69.

“I played pretty O.K. today, but I just hope that I could have done better with my iron. I hit close to the pins and shot five birdies,” said Yupaporn. “It was very sunny and windy in the afternoon. The condition was quite tough for me and made me had to come up with a good game plan.”

Yupaporn emerged among the strong contenders when the fourth SAT-TWT Open stopped at the Royal Hua Hin Golf Course a fortnight ago. But she came short in the end, settling at  tied 12th in the final day.

“It was a bit disappointing to finish that way after I did quite well in the first round. I’ve learned my lesson. Tomorrow, I have to stick to my game plan and have fun with whatever happens out there.   At this point, I don’t want to think  far ahead as there are 36 more holes to play. Other players are quite tough. You have to shoot low scores to get ahead of the field,” said Yupaporn, in search for her first crown since winning on the China LPGA Tour back in 2018.

Ornnicha from Lopburi once again surged into contention, producing five birdies against two bogeys for a 69 alongside Chonikarn and Saraporn.

“I hit a lot of greens in regulation and had a lot of birdie chances. But I missed several putts because it was tough to read the lie. I should have been more careful with line reading,” said the 25-year-old Ornnicha who has yet to celebrate a breakthrough victory. Her best results were two runner-up positions in a Taiwan LPGA Tour event in 2019 and the last SAT-TWT Open at the Royal Hua hin Golf Course two weeks ago.

“My plan is to hit a lot of fairways and create as many birdie chances as possible. I also need to improve my putting accuracy,” Ornnicha said.

Chonnikarn, also with five birdies and two bogeys, said: “I’m pretty pleased with my game especially the way I hit the iron. The green condition is quite soft this week, so I can attack the pins as much as I’d like to. About my game plan for tomorrow, I will try to hit the fairways, hit the greens and hope to make lots of birdies. I will try to approach the second round with the level I play today. I hope to see more red scores (birdies) from me on the leaders’ board. “

Red-hot Patcharajutar Kongkraphan or P.K., who has won back-to-back titles (in the fourth SAT-TWT Open and at the Springfield Village & Spa last Friday, opened her account with a 70.
“I hope to have some good result again. My iron still works very well. It comes down to my driver. If I can hit my driver at will, I will stand another great shot at winning this week,” P.K. said.

Christian Eriksen reveals Erik ten Hag’s role in transfer

Manchester United have welcomed their latest signing, Christian Eriksen, Having arrived at Carrington earlier on Tuesday, the Dane has since started training as he bids to compete for a place in Erik ten Hag’s team at the beginning of the 2022/23 season.

Christian Eriksen reveals Erik ten Hag's role in transfer

It was not easy for United to convince Eriksen to join them. Both Tottenham Hotspur and Brentford had very strong cases as to why he should join them, the former being where he used to play and the home of his old boss Antonio Conte, and the latter being where he had so successfully returned to football after his cardiac arrest during Euro 2020. The midfielder instead opted for an Old Trafford move, and represents fantastic business for the Red Devils.

Eriksen marked his move to Manchester with an interview with club media.

“First of all, the football,” Eriksen revealed as the main reason for his decision to join United over the host of other clubs fighting for his signature.

“I mean, I’m a guy who wants to play football and I think, with the idea of the manager coming in and the ideas he had, and also with my conversations with him, I mean I could see myself playing football in Manchester.

“And, at the same time, it’s a very, very big club – if not the biggest. If you pronounce it anywhere, they know where it’s from, they know where the locals come from.

“It has a big history and it’s a nice feeling to be part of something that is that big in history.”

The former Spurs man also discussed Erik ten Hag’s influence on his choice, having trained with the Dutchman at Ajax briefly in the past.

“I want to come here to play football, I don’t come here just for the logo itself, I want to come here and play.

“Obviously, to speak with the manager and hear his ideas and have conversations with him on the football terms, was great and ideal for me to get the decision and the possibility of coming to Manchester United.”

Thailand’s rising star equestrians set a sight on qualifying for international competitions

The Vuntanadit equestrian sisters have been putting on great displays. ‘Pam’ Suphakamol became the first Thai rider to compete in the Grand Prix, the highest level, on international stage while ‘Patty’ Suphajit finished third in the CDI2* in Poland.

Thailand’s rising star equestrians set a sight on qualifying for international competitions

Suphajit impressed the judges with the incorporating of Thai instruments and the snippet from the period soap opera Love Destiny. Following their impressive performances, they are setting a target of representing Thailand by securing a spot for the Asian Games 2022 and Olympic Games 2024.

During their exclusive interview for the media on July 25, 2022, Suphakamol and Suphajit shared their experiences on joining dressage competition on international stages where they have been well recognized.

They were coached by Imke Schellekens-Bartels, the equestrian from the Netherlands, who got the silver medal at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Bejing and the gold medal in the World Championship 2010 in Kentucky, both in the dressage. Now, they are committed to representing Thailand at both Asian Games 2022 and Olympic Games 2024.

The 24-year-old Suphakamol is now ranked 366th in the FEI Dressage World Ranking. She is well recognized among equestrians in Europe thanks to her impressive results in many tournaments.

With her relentless efforts in developing and improving her skills, she joined the Grand Prix competition, the highest level in dressage, becoming the first Thai to achieve that

Her achievements included a fifth-place finish at the CDI 3* Bigtour Grand Prix in Grand Prix Special Class in Poland in April, 2022 and a second-place finish at the CDI 3 Star U25 Grand Prix in France in October last year.

Her younger sister Suphajit,21, is gaining experiences in a hope to follow her steps. In the CDI 2 Star Prix St-Georges in Poland in April, Suphajit clinched the third-place finish in dressage, impressing the judges by applying the Thai song melody inspired by the famous period soap opera Love Destiny.

It is sure to boost her confidences before the qualifying events for the 2022 Asian Games in Hangzhou, China, rescheduled to take place in September 2023.

“Pam” Suphakamol said; “Joining the competition in Europe is a good experience for me. I have learned a lot, working with a top-tier coach and having to take care of our horses ourselves including feeding the horses and getting them checked up as well as training.

“The important thing I have learned for being equestrian is that a rider and a horse must have good teamwork. We have to take care and understand each other’s feelings. We should take a horse as our friend not just an animal. They are an important part of our sport and our lives.”

Thailand’s rising star equestrians set a sight on qualifying for international competitions

“Patty” Suphajit added, “Apart from taking care of our horses, we have experienced a lot when joining a competition. We might have a good preparation at home. However, we always faced an unexpected situation in the tournament and we had to handle it.

“It is also about our concern that we will not be able to perform like we had trained. The more we compete, the less we are concerned.  And we are now more committed and try to do our best. At the end, we might not get the result we expect, but we will learn from that and then improve ourselves and also our horses.”

As for next goals, “Pam” Suphakamol will compete in 2-3 international events in Europe (France or Germany) in September and October to get more experiences for both herself and her horse.

From January to December 2023, she is scheduled to join the Grand Prix events on FEI to gain as many points as possible to qualify for the 2024 Olympic Games in the dressage.

Meanwhile, “Patty” Suphajit is preparing to join the qualifying events in Thailand in the Prix St. George to secure a place and represent Thailand in the dressage at the Asian Games 2022, the event moved back to take place in September next year.

Suphakit, the father of the Vuntanadit equestrians, talked about an expectation for his daughters, “They have worked really hard and tried their best for six years in Europe. I really believe that they will give their best and show their skills to the best. My family and I have always believed in our daughters. Khun Chuenhathai (the mother) and I as a father have been supporting them along the way.

“We witness that as equestrians, they have made a fast progress during their training. They fight relentlessly. We are happy to see the Thais being recognized by both equestrians and judges on the international stages. We will also do our best to give them supports and advices to make sure their dream comes true.”
