Former champions Parinda Phokan and Chanaettee Wannasaen hope to produce the eye-catching form as they tee off next week in the “SAT-TWT Open” Road to World Ranking due at the Phoenix Gold Golf and Country Club in Pattaya.

Two Ex-Champs Ready for Thai WPGA Opener

First circuit winner Parinda from Khon Kaen and second circuit winner Chanettee from Chiang Mai are among the top contenders as the Bt 2.5 million Thai WPGA event resumes between June 22-24 after a long interruption due to COVID-19 outbreak.

Parinda who carded a total eight under-par-208 to beat Arpichaya Yubol by two strokes to win the inaugural Thai WPGA at Lake View Resort & Golf Club last September said: “I’m excited that we finally get to play the first Thai WPGA event this season after almost a year. I’ve been quite prepared for this tournament and I want to play like that the way I do during the practice. I’m happy that we have a lot of Thai WPGA events (eight) coming up. It will be quite a challenge.”

In terms of her game plan at the Phoenix Gold, the 24-year-old player said: “Due to narrow fairways, tricky greens and windy conditions, it is one of the challenging courses. It’s a great opportunity for you to learn and test your game.”

Eighteen-year-old Channettee who beat Arpichaya by a stroke in circuit 2 at the Phoenix Gold last November will have all eyes on her after sweeping five local titles so far this year.

“We are really looking forward to this tournament after a long break. In terms of my preparation, I’ve working on my weakness and I hope to have a top 5 finish. However, I don’t want to put myself under pressure as a former champion. I will try to stick to my game plan and do my best,” said the promising teenager who won the National Qualifiers which earned her a spot into the Honda LPGA earlier this year.

The Thai WPGA event, organized by the Thailand Women’s Professional Golf Association, aims at becoming a world ranking tournament in the future. At least 10 tournaments, each with a minimum overall prize money of Bt2.5 million, must be held per year and at least for two consecutive seasons, in order to seek sanction from the governing world ranking body.

“To have a local tour with world rankings, it will be a great pathway for us to play in international events and in some big events as well. We hope to have this kind of continuous support,” Chanettee added.

The SAT-TWT Open Road to World Ranking, the first of all eight circuits in 2022, will be competed in a three-day stroke-play format with a total of 54 holes (18 holes each day). The field acceptance will not exceed 132 players with only top 60 and ties, after 36 holes, proceeding to the final round. The winner will receive the top prize money of Bt367,500.

The SAT-TWT Open Road to World Ranking is sponsored by the Sports Authority of Thailand, National Sports Development Fund, Siam Commercial Bank, P Overseas Steal (Public Company Limited) and Phoenix Gold Golf and Country Club in Pattaya. Premier League games from next season can only be rescheduled if the impact of player unavailability on a club’s squad is “truly exceptional”, the league said on Wednesday following a raft of postponements during the last campaign.

Premier League tweaks postponement rules ahead of new season

Twenty-two matches were postponed last season due to COVID-19 outbreaks and the subsequent unavailability of players, with the league being criticised by clubs for their handling of the crisis.

Under the new guidelines, requests will continue to be assessed on a case-by-case basis but only be granted if the concerned club has taken all measures to avoid a postponement.

“This will replace the previous COVID-19 match postponement guidance, providing a standard process for applications,” the league said in a statement.

“Approval will only be granted where the impact of player unavailability on a club’s squad is truly exceptional and where the club concerned has taken all reasonable steps to avoid the necessity to make the application.”

Earlier, sides could apply for a fixture postponement only if they had a minimum of four positive COVID-19 cases in their squad.

The new season kicks off on Aug. 6.

The Warriors laid waste to the Boston Celtics on their home floor in Game 6 of the NBA Finals to win their fourth championship in eight seasons. A 21-0 onslaught that spanned the end of the first quarter and the start of the second gave Golden State a lead that was too much for Boston to overcome in a 103-90 final.

Stephen Curry’s 34 points led five Warriors in double figures. There was no “Game 6 Klay” Thompson (12 points on 20 shots), but Golden State got 18 points from Andrew Wiggins, 15 from Jordan Poole off the bench and 12 from Draymond Green, all of which stunted Boston’s attempt to save its Cinderella season.

Curry won his first career Finals MVP award.

After a two-year NBA playoff hiatus, the Warriors have climbed back to the mountaintop and planted their flag at the summit.

For the fourth time in the last eight seasons, the Warriors are NBA champions after they beat the Boston Celtics 103-90 in Game 6 of the Finals at TD Garden on Thursday night.

As an organization, the Warriors now have won seven NBA titles, with five coming since the team relocated to the Bay Area from Philadelphia.

Steph Curry, Klay Thompson, Draymond Green and Andre Iguodala can now call themselves four-time NBA champions. Steve Kerr now has nine rings as a player and a coach.

The Thai women’s national volleyball team has replaced its Covid-infected players after the team was left with only eight.

Thailand Volleyball Association president Somporn Chaibangyan said on Wednesday that the International Volleyball Federation (FIVB) had given Thailand the go-ahead to replace five of its players, who were confirmed to be infected with Covid-19 following a RT-PCR test.

He said the organiser of the Volleyball Nations League informed Thailand of the FIVB’s green light so the association had quickly sent five substitute players to the Philippines – Wipawee Srithong, Jarasporn Bundasak, Kannika Thipachot, Tichaya Boonlert and Khatthalee Pinsuwan.

Somporn thanked the organiser for allowing Thailand to replace its infected players as a special case and also thanked the volleyball associations of the US, Japan, Belgium, Bulgaria, Poland and Canada for approving the decision.

Thailand is playing against Poland on Thursday at 10am in Quezon City in the Philippines.

Somporn had earlier announced that eight players were infected with Covid-19 after a match on Tuesday. He said that there were eight players left so he had contacted the FIVB to allow the team to replace the infected players.

Eight players of the Thai women’s national volleyball team are infected with Covid-19, the Thailand Volleyball Association said on Wednesday.

Volleyball fans have been curious that some players were missing from training after the team won 3-0 against Canada 3-0 at the 2022 FIVB Volleyball Women’s Nations League on Tuesday at Quezon City in the Philippines.

Somporn Chaibangyan, president of the Thailand Volleyball Association, confirmed on Wednesday that four players — Piyanut Pannoy, Supattra Pairoj, Watchareeya Nuanjam, and Sutadta Chuewulim — were found to be infected with Covid-19 before the match, while Sasipaporn Janthawisut, Natthanicha Jaisaen, Hattaya Bamrungsuk, and Tichakorn Boonlert tested positive after the match.

Somporn said the team has been considerably weakened as only seven or eight players are left with only one libero. He added that there was also the likelihood of more players being infected.

He said it was an unfortunate development as the team has been in great form, but on the positive side many substitute players would get chances to play.

He said that the association has contacted the sport’s parent body, the International Volleyball Federation (FIVB) to allow replacements. Somporn said the FIVB had said it would discuss with other nations about the request.

If permitted, the team will call up Wipawee Srithong, Jarasporn Bundasak, Kannika Thipachot, Tichaya Boonlert, and Khatthalee Pinsuwan.

The Thais had dominated the group with victories over Bulgaria, Serbia and China during the first week in Ankara, Turkey. Thailand are currently second behind Japan.

The country will lock horns with Poland on Thursday at 10am. Catch the match live on TV channel One31 or GMM25.

Costa Rica book place at World Cup after playoff win

Joel Campbell’s early goal sent Costa Rica to the World Cup for a third successive tournament as they edged past 10-man New Zealand 1-0 in their intercontinental playoff on Tuesday (June 14) and secured the last place at the finals in Qatar.

Costa Rica book place at World Cup after playoff win

The former Arsenal striker scored after three minutes for Costa Rica as he squeezed between two defenders to touch home a square pass from Jewison Bennette with the New Zealand defence slow to react.

But New Zealand will feel hard done by after having an equaliser chalked off by VAR for a foul in the build-up to Chris Wood putting the ball in the back of the net in the 39th minute.

A check found that Matthew Garbett had fouled Oscar Duarte in what looked a harsh decision.

A VAR check also led to a 69th-minute red card for Kosta Barbarouses, leaving the Kiwis down to 10 men.

The playoff between the fourth-placed team in the CONCACAF region and the Oceania confederation winner, at the Ahmad bin Ali Stadium, brought to an end the qualifying campaign for the 2022 finals in Qatar, which runs from Nov. 21-Dec. 18.

Costa Rica qualified for a sixth World Cup in total and will compete in Group E at the finals alongside Germany, Japan and Spain.

Campbell’s goal had some 6,000 travelling supporters, out of a crowd of 10,803, on their feet but did not precipitate the expected dominant performance from the central American team.

Instead it was New Zealand who looked the more enterprising of the teams, with centre forward Wood, who was constantly watched by a cautious Costa Rican defence, the target of their attacks.

Alex Greive and Garbett also had chances in the first half but their shooting was off target.

Three changes by Costa Rica at half-time lifted them out of their slumber but it was still New Zealand who showed more attacking enterprise in the second half but without any return.

Costa Rica goalkeeper Kaylor Navas made a good stop in the 76th minute from Clayton Lewis as New Zealand toiled in search of an equaliser with Costa Rica sitting back and absorbing the pressure until the final whistle set off joyous celebrations.
