Natchanok Finishes Homesoil Notah Begay Campaign in Style

The talented Natchanok Tunwannaruk was hot on her heels as she fired a sizzling 65 to establish a six-stroke advantage in the girls’ 15-18 division of the Notah Begay III Junior National Championship at the Suvarnabhumi Golf and Country Club on Sunday.

The 17-year-old from Bangkok generated seven birdies to sign off on 10 under-par-134 and completed her 36-hole mission without an error. She enjoyed huge lead over Kritiya Thanintorndamrongdej who followed at lone second on 140.

If no one can shoot a lower score when the second field of players compete for 36 holes between Monday and Tuesday, Natchanok will win the division and earn a slot to play in the November’s Notah  Begay III Junior Golf World Championship in the US.

“I’ve been hitting the iron well since the first day but today my putting game really works. I made only one birdie from five par five holes on Saturday. So I’m more determined to shoot scores on all of those holes today and I really made it,” said Natchanok whose outstanding portfolio includes a victory in the  IMG Academy Junior World Florida Challenge last year.

“I was training really hard before this tournament and it paid off. I really tried my best out there and the score should separate me from the rest of the field,” she added.

Whatever happens in the last two days of the tournament, Natchanok will still head for the US in August as she was earlier awarded a scholarship to study at the IMG Golf Academy.

“I hope to learn and improve a lot of aspects in my golf game in the US especially my driving distance,” said the teenager who is verbally committed to study at the University of Georgia once she finishes high-school.

On the boys’ side, Kittipong Kamlangklee, with four birdies against three bogeys, closed with a 71 for a two-day total five under-par-139. The 15-year-old from Nakhon Si Thammarat is on top of the leader’s board with former Thailand Mixed champion Ramil Saelim following a stroke behind.

“Hitting 5 under is way beyond my expectation. I just came to practise for the first time here on Friday and didn’t have much time getting used to the course. My plan is not to drive the ball at maximum speed as the course is short. I focused more on controlling the ball,” said Kittipong.

“Ramil really gave it a fight out there and made me under pressure. So, I had to be solid and  held onto the lead to the end,” he added.

In the boys’ 12-14 class, Prakit Jumpla shot a 66 to lead on nine under-par-135, four shots ahead of Bhukit Picthayasaowapak.

Namo Luangnitikul dominated the girls’ 12-14 category following a brilliant 64 and a total nine under-par-135 with Arisa Bintachitt sitting three shots back.

In the 8-11 flight, only 27 holes were taken into account due unplayable weather condition. Kan Nikorntes and Takrit Supagonchoowong were tied at four under in the boys’ event while Jiratchaya Preechasuchat seized the top spot at six under.

Tenth grade students Kittipong Kamlangklee and Tarapath Panya took full charge in the boys’ and girls’ 15-18 categories after their opening 68s in the Notah Begay III Junior Golf National Championship presented by TrustGolf at the Suvarnabhumi Golf and Country Club on Saturday.

Kittipong from Thongchai Jaidee Golf Academy relied on his hot driver to build a two-shot lead over Pasit Iampongsai in the four-day tournament which features six divisions: 8-11, 12-14, 15-18 for the boys and girls.

Competing on 36 holes under a stroke-play format, the winner of each category will earn a spot in the Notah Begay III Junior Golf World Championship which is due in the US in November.

Hailing from Nakhon Si Thammarat, Kittipong kicked off his round with an eagle before he went on to fire four birdies at the front nine. But two straight bogeys on the 17th and 18th saw two strokes go as he finished with four- under-par  72.

“I hit the driver very well and hit all the fairways except on the last two holes. I was trying hard to make pars on those holes but ended up putting myself under pressure,” said the 15-year-old boy who is eyeing on his second win this season after the Chang Championship 2022 at Rancho Charnvee Resort and Country Club.

“My game plan is to play it safe on Sunday. I’m afraid that if I go for it too much, I will be under pressure and make mistakes. I’m positive that four under can keep me on top of the leader’s board for four days,” said Kittipong, a protégé of Thai golf legend Thongchai Jaidee.

“ (Thongchai) He told me that if things don’t go my way, just go back to basic golf. His instruction really works for me. I hope to follow his path and become a successful player like him,” Kittipong said.

Home-town girl Tarapath fully benefited from her familiarity at the course to card a 68 to lead national junior player Natcachanok Tunwannarux by a shot  in the girls’ event.

“I’m quite confident playing on this course as I practise here every week,” said the 15-year-old girl who won a tournament at the landscape back in 2020.

“You have to have a good game plan as there are several ponds on this course. I have to hit the fairways and hit the ball to the right positions to set up my opportunities,” added the 10th grade student at Bromsgrove International School.

“I hope to win a spot to play at the Notah Begay III Junior Golf World Championship. It will be a great opportunity for me to be observed by college coaches and be chosen to enter a college in the US,” she added.

In the 12-14 division, Sippawit Khuanphet shot a 64 for a five-shot advantage over Kittiphop Chantang in the boys competition while Kwanchanok Boonchan hit a 69 to lead Jidapat Siddhirujirot by a stroke in the girls’ event.

In the 8-11 class, Kan Kikorntes and Yodsawad Pruksangkul were tied on top after each hit a 70 in the boys’ event while Maipimporn Pimsri, Jiratchaya Preechasuchat, Amaon Maneerit and Natchanan Sunthonthip took a four-way lead  in the girls’ event, each with a 70.

Tawanchai PK Saenchai knocked out Niclas Larsen at ONE 158 on Friday night, securing a shot at the ONE Featherweight Muay Thai World Title.

Fifth-ranked featherweight Muay Thai contender Tawanchai dominated ONE newcomer Niclas Larsen to kayo the Danish fighter in the second round.

With the victory, Tawanchai earned a shot at reigning ONE Featherweight Muay Thai World Champion Petchmorakot Petchyindee, as well as a US$50,000 performance bonus.

In a battle of elite bantamweight contenders, No 4-ranked Fabricio Andrade scored a quick first-round finish over No 2 Kwon Won Il.

Andrade stalked Kwon around the Circle from the opening bell, looking to land the fight-ending blow. That came in the form of a left body kick that crumpled the South Korean, who could not recover from the impact.

Andrade’s performance established him as a world title threat and earned him a US$50,000 performance bonus.

Fifth-ranked flyweight contender Reece McLaren authored a slick submission victory over dangerous knockout artist Xie Wei.

After getting dropped by a thunderous right hand from the Chinese fighter, McLaren recovered and turned to his world-class grappling. Within moments, McLaren had Xie’s back and secured a rear-naked choke to force the tap.

Former ONE Flyweight World Champion and current No 2-ranked contender Kairat Akhmetov routed highly-regarded Japanese veteran Tatsumitsu Wada in an impressive performance.

Akhmetov took home a unanimous decision after three rounds and called for a world title shot.
Veteran martial artist Guto Inocente survived an early onslaught from Serbian sensation Rade Opacic to produce a come-from-behind knockout victory in the first round.

Former ONE Strawweight World Champion and current No 5-ranked contender Alex Silva put together a tremendous performance against Adrian Mattheis, finishing the rising Indonesian star with a crafty submission in their highly anticipated rematch. The victory also earned Silva a US$50,000 bonus.

Ronaldo : WE’LL BE BACK WHERE WE BELONG

Cristiano Ronaldo has thanked the Manchester United supporters following his first season back at the club and promises the Reds will be back winning trophies before long.

Ronaldo : WE'LL BE BACK WHERE WE BELONG

Ronaldo has caught the eye at Old Trafford even in a disappointing season, scoring 24 goals across all competitions and netting various individual awards.

He is grateful that the fans have been behind him from that memorable first game back, and admits he was ‘nervous’ prior to hitting a brace in a 4-1 thrashing of Newcastle United in M16.

“What I have to say to the fans is they are amazing,” Cristiano told us. “Even when you’ve lost the game, they always support us, they’re always with us.

“The supporters are always in my heart and it’s the people that all should respect because they are always on our side.

“For example the first game, of course, I not just felt it in the game but one day before in the hotel.

“I was a little bit nervous before which is normal, but things go well. I start the game, I score two goals and it was very, very nice.”

It’s been another strong season for Ronaldo personally, despite United’s issues on the pitch.

He set a new international goalscoring record the week after his transfer to the Reds was announced and is currently on an astonishing 115 goals for Portugal.

In December, he scored against Arsenal to pass 800 career goals and then, on his way to a hat-trick versus Tottenham in March, he surpassed Josef Bican as FIFA’s all-time record goalscorer in competitive matches.

The 37-year-old has been used to setting such incredible numbers during his career, but now he’s fixed his sights on adding to the silverware he collected during his first spell at United, between 2003 and 2009.

“The records [are] coming in a natural way,” he added. “I don’t follow the records, but the records follow me so it’s good.

“It’s still my motivation to carry on working hard, to still love the passion for the game, and of course Manchester and my teammates help me all the way so I have to appreciate all the people who help Cristiano.

“It’s always nice to score goals for this club. When it is a hat trick it’s even more [nice].

“But the most important thing for me is to try to win the games and try to win some championship or some cup but I believe that Manchester will be where they belong. Sometimes it takes time, but I still believe.”

UEFA apologise to fans for 'distressing events' at Champions League final

UEFA have issued an apology to the fans who were affected by the events surrounding the Champions League final after ticket fraud and crowd trouble marred the showpiece event at the Stade de France in Paris.

The match was delayed by more than 30 minutes after officers forcefully held back people trying to enter the Stade de France while riot police had also sprayed tear gas on fans, including women and children.

“UEFA wishes to sincerely apologise to all spectators who had to experience or witness frightening and distressing events in the build-up to the UEFA Champions League final… on a night which should have been a celebration of European club football,” it said in a statement on Friday (June 3).

“No football fan should be put in that situation and it must not happen again.”

Much of the blame was placed on Liverpool fans by France’s Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin but he acknowledged police were caught off-guard by several hundred local “delinquents” who turned up to cause trouble.

Europe’s soccer governing body had commissioned an independent report earlier this week.

On Friday they outlined its scope as they look to establish a timeline of events, examine operational plans, assess roles and responsibilities and the response to events inside and outside the stadium.

“The Review will engage with UEFA and all relevant stakeholders, including, but not limited to, fan groups… the finalist clubs themselves, general spectators, the French Football Federation, the police and other public national and local authorities, and the stadium operator,” it added.

Real Madrid had demanded answers from organisers over measures taken to protect supporters while Liverpool CEO Billy Hogan had reiterated a call for an investigation, saying they had written to UEFA and raised specific questions.

Real Madrid won Saturday’s final 1-0 to win a record-extending 14th European Cup.

Thailand’s under-23 football team grabbed a last-minute equaliser to salvage a draw against Vietnam in their opening match of the AFC U23 Asian Cup in Uzbekistan on Thursday night.

Thailand salvage draw with last-minute equaliser against Vietnam

The Thais were seeking revenge after losing 1-0 to the Vietnamese in the SEA Games final in Hanoi last month.

However, the match got off to a bad start for Thailand when Phan Tuấn Tài struck in the 1st minute to give Vietnam the lead. The Thais then levelled the score before half-time when Ben Davis, who plays for Oxford United in England, found the back of the net in the 34th minute.

Vietnam showed the confidence gained from their SEA Games gold medal after the break, taking the lead again with a goal from Nguyễn Văn Tùng in the 73rd minute.

But Thailand refused to be humbled for a second time by their fierce regional rivals, as striker Suphanat Mueanta swooped to score the equaliser in the 91st minute.

In the other Group C game, reigning champions South Korea crushed Malaysia 4-1.

Thailand will take on Malaysia in their second game of the tournament at Bunyodkor Stadium on Sunday at 10pm.

Abramovich completes sale of Chelsea to Boehly-led consortium

Abramovich completes sale of Chelsea to Boehly-led consortium

Roman Abramovich has completed the sale of Chelsea and related companies to an investment group led by Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital, the Premier League club said on Monday (May 30).

The consortium, which won the bid to acquire the London side earlier this month, received approval from the Premier League and the British government last week for the sale to go ahead.

A final agreement was reached on Saturday (May 28).

Russian owner Abramovich put the club up for sale in early March following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, which Moscow calls a “special military operation”.

Sanctions on the Russian had also complicated the sale process.

“In selling the club, Mr. Abramovich stipulated that the new owner must be a good steward of the club, the net proceeds of the sale must be donated to charity, and that he would not seek the repayment of loans made to affiliates of the club,” Chelsea said in a statement.

In a separate statement, the club said Boehly and Clearlake would share joint control and equal governance of the club.

Boehly, who is part-owner of the Los Angeles Dodgers, will serve as chairman of the holding company.

“We are honoured to become the new custodians of Chelsea Football Club. We’re all in — 100% — every minute of every match,” Boehly said.

“Our vision as owners is clear: we want to make the fans proud. Along with our commitment to developing the youth squad and acquiring the best talent, our plan of action is to invest in the club for the long-term and build on Chelsea’s remarkable history of success.

“I personally want to thank ministers and officials in the British government, and the Premier League, for all their work in making this happen.”
