Liverpool won’t take risks with Salah despite Golden Boot race

Juergen Klopp wants his trio of players returning from injury to play some part against Wolves.

Liverpool won't take risks with Salah despite Golden Boot race

Liverpool manager Juergen Klopp said he would like to call upon Mohamed Salah, Virgil van Dijk and Fabinho for Sunday’s (May 20) crunch Premier League clash against Wolverhampton Wanderers but added he was unsure if they would be fit in time.

Liverpool need to beat Wolves at Anfield on the final day and hope Manchester City drop points against Aston Villa to clinch a second league title in three seasons.

Salah and Van Dijk missed the midweek win at Southampton due to injuries sustained in last week’s FA Cup final against Chelsea while Fabinho suffered a muscle problem against Villa earlier this month.

“It looks good, the boys make steps and we will see,” Klopp told reporters on Friday (May 20). <

“My preferred solution would be they could play at the weekend, for rhythm reason stuff like this, or could on the bench and we can bring them on or not. But that would involve, but if not then we take it from there. So I cannot say 100%.

Salah leads the golden boot race with 22 goals, one more than Tottenham Hotspur’s South Korean forward Son who will come up against relegated Norwich City on Sunday.

“I actually understand 100% what is it the goal scoring battle with Heung-min Son, no chance we’ll take any risk. Mo doesn’t want to take any risk, no doubt about that.”

Klopp said that he hasn’t spoken to Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard who now manages Aston Villa.

“We are all human beings that have these kind of things but there’s no real need for that, Stevie will take it 100% seriously I’m sure without me calling him or whatever, I don’t have to, probably the rest of the club did it already but I didn’t.”

Liverpool wonLiverpool won

This week has seen a number of pitch invasions following the final whistle in vital games, a trend Klopp said is dangerous.

“It’s for the players of the other team especially massively uncomfortable and it should not be dangerous for them.

“We should make sure that nothing, absolutely nothing happens. People threaten themselves by jumping over whatever these kind of things, these kind of things shouldn’t happen. I think we can celebrate things without threatening ourselves and the opponent, I would say that should be possible.”

World Athletics congratulated Thai sprinter Puripol Boonson, 16, on Thursday, after he ran the world’s third fastest 200 metres for his age group – behind only Erriyon Knighton and Usain Bolt.

Puripol hailed by World Athletics after 3rd fastest 200m for his age

Puripol broke the Southeast Asian Games and Thailand record to win the 200m gold medal in a time of 20.37 seconds last Sunday.

He then doubled up in Hanoi by winning the 100m gold medal on Wednesday.

World Athletics hailed the Thai sprint phenom’s feat in a Facebook post, noting that only two athletes have bettered his 200m mark at the age of 16. The first is Bolt, while the second is the Jamaican spring king’s anointed successor, Knighton.

Aged 18, American Knighton set the world under-20 record for the 200m on April 30 this year with a time of 19.49 secs at the Louisiana State University Invitational.

Bolt won the 200m at the 2003 World Youth Championships, setting the previous under-20 record with a time of 19.93 secs when he was 17 years old.

Puripol will get a chance to measure himself against those times when he competes in the 2022 World Athletics U20 Championships in Colombia from August 2 to 7.

The Thai prodigy has been tipped as a possible future Olympic medal-winner.

Calvert-Lewin secures Everton survival in epic win over Palace

Everton secured their Premier League status as Dominic Calvert-Lewin scored five minutes from time to snatch a thrilling 3-2 victory over Crystal Palace after they rallied from two goals down at a rocking Goodison Park on Thursday.

Calvert-Lewin secures Everton survival in epic win over Palace

Everton needed a win to ensure they continued their 68-year top-flight stay and Calvert-Lewin, who has been a peripheral figure this season due to injury, headed a Demarai Grey free-kick in at the Gwladys Street end to spark a pitch invasion.

Jean-Philippe Mateta and Jordan Ayew, who could have had a red card moments earlier, scored first-half goals for mid-table Palace but Everton responded after the breakwith goals from Michael Keane and Richarlison before Calvert-Lewin’s winner.

Everton move to 39 points from 37 games, four clear of relegation rivals Burnley and Leeds United, which ensures they go into Sunday’s final game of the season at Champions League-chasing Arsenal with the pressure on them since January now off.

“It was unbelievably special,” Calvert-Lewin told Sky Sports. “The amount of pressure that we were under, going two goals down and then to get to 2-2, I just felt that another chance would come.

“I just had to make sure I was in the right area. It was an incredible experience.

“It’s why we love the game, it’s why the fans love the game. You don’t want to be in the position we were, but then it produces moments like this.

“You can go from low to high so quickly. It is the biggest weight in the world that has been lifted!”

SET-PIECE WOES
Palace went ahead after 21 minutes when Eberechi Eze’s free-kick was met by Matete with a simple headed finish as Everton’s set-piece woes were on show again.

Ayew was fortunate not to receive a red card after a crunching tackle on Anthony Gordan only drew yellow, and then minutes later scored the second goal for the visitors.

It was a setback of Everton’s own making as captain Seamus Coleman lost the ball on the halfway line.

As Palace broke into the box, a mix-up between Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford and defender Vitali Mykolenko allowed Wilfred Zaha to fire at goal, the ball ricocheting into the net off Ayew after 36 minutes.

Everton started the second half much brighter and pulled a goal back through Keane. They kept pressing after that and drew level through Richarlison.

The home fans roared Everton forward in search of a vital third and Calvert-Lewin, a player who has drawn some criticism for his perceived poor performances in recent weeks, came up with their magic moment to send Goodison Park wild.

“The way the fans have been supporting us has been unbelievable,” Calvert-Lewin added. “I think they’ve made the difference for us.

“Some fans have questioned my commitment to the club, but I always give 100% and I hope my goal showed that.”

Spot-on Eintracht beat Rangers in shootout to win Europa League final

Eintracht Frankfurt won the Europa League final after holding their nerve to beat Rangers 5-4 in a clinical penalty shootout as they claimed their first European trophy in 42 years.

Spot-on Eintracht beat Rangers in shootout to win Europa League final

Eintracht keeper Kevin Trapp saved Aaron Ramsey’s spot kick — Rangers’ fourth — while Eintracht were flawless in their execution, scoring all five after the game had finished 1-1 after 120 minutes.

Joe Aribo had struck against the run of play in the 57th minute to give Rangers the lead, charging clear after a string of defensive errors and sliding the ball past Trapp.

The Germans, unbeaten in the competition going into the final and eyeing their first European title since 1980, bounced back as Rafael Borre snuck in between two defenders to turn in a Filip Kostic cross in the 70th.

“We played 13 matches in Europe and we did not lose a single one,” said Eintracht coach Oliver Glasner.

“We took it step-by-step and at the end we were rewarded. I have no words to express what I feel for the players,” added the Austrian, whose side will now compete in next season’s Champions League despite finishing in 11th place in the Bundesliga.

Frankfurt are the first Bundesliga team to win the Europa League, or its predecessor the UEFA Cup, since 1997, when Schalke beat Inter Milan on penalties.

BRILLIANT SAVES
Rangers had ended extra time the stronger side, but two brilliant saves from man-of-the-match Trapp ensured the game went to the shootout where the superb technique and mental strength of the Germans won it.

There was a sizzling atmosphere inside the Sanchez Pizjuan stadium with Rangers and Eintracht supporters having piled into southern Spain’s largest city over the past few days.

Frankfurt are the first Bundesliga team to win the Europa League, or its predecessor the UEFA Cup, since 1997, when Schalke beat Inter Milan on penalties.

QUICK REACTION
Jesper Lindstrom had a chance to score but his powerful shot was bravely blocked by Calvin Bassey almost on the goalline.

The leveller came when the dangerous Kostic was allowed to fire in a low cross from the left and Colombian Borre reacted quickest, sneaking in front of Calvin Bassey to steer the ball home.

Rangers recovered from the blow and both sides sought to win the game inside the 90 minutes but neither could stop the encounter from entering extra time.

There was little between the two exhausted teams in the opening period but after the change around, Borna Barisic fired a long-range effort straight at Trapp and then Ajdin Hrustic drilled a shot just wide for Eintracht.

It was Rangers who went closest to winning the contest though, in the final minutes, when substitute Kemar Roofe flashed a ball across the box to Kent whose low shot was superbly blocked by Trapp.

The keeper was alert again to keep out a free kick from Tavernier to ensure the final went to penalties, where the quality of the spot-kicks was outstanding.

Just one player fluffed his lines as Ramsey’s soft effort was saved by Trapp after the first six shots had all found the net.

It came down to Borre to settle the contest and the Colombian, like all his team mates, kept his cool to set off the celebrations for the thousands of Germans in the stadium.

Klopp praises players and Jake Daniels after keeping title race alive

Liverpool manager Juergen Klopp heaps praise on his players after their 2-1 Premier League win at Southampton, and says he is proud of Blackpool striker Jake Daniels for his decision to come out as the UK’s only openly gay active male professional footballer.

Klopp praises players and Jake Daniels after keeping title race alive

Joel Matip’s stooping header gave Liverpool a 2-1 win at Southampton on Tuesday (May 17) to keep the Premier League title race alive until the final day of the season.

The result leaves Liverpool a point behind leaders Manchester City ahead of Sunday’s final round of games when City are at home to Aston Villa and Liverpool host Wolverhampton Wanderers at Anfield.

City have 90 points with Liverpool on 89, meaning that victory for Pep Guardiola’s side against Villa, managed by former Reds captain Steven Gerrard, would secure their fourth league title in five seasons.

Juergen Klopp changed nine of the team who beat Chelsea on penalties in the FA Cup final on Saturday with Virgil van Dijk and Mohamed Salah injured but several others rested.

Klopp’s choice was looking questionable when Southampton took a 13th-minute lead through a wonderful Nathan Redmond strike after the winger had cut in from the left flank.

Roberto Firmino, who led the line in the absence of Sadio Mane, had a header ruled out for offside as the visitors sought a quick way back into the game.

Liverpool, who face Real Madrid in the Champions League final on May 28, drew level in the 27th minute with Takumi Minamino, who spent a loan spell with Southampton last season, firing a fierce shot in at the near post.

Defender Joe Gomez, whose Liverpool career has been hampered by injuries, had to be substituted at the interval after suffering what appeared to be an ankle injury just before the break.

The goal had taken the wind out of Southampton’s sails and it was no surprise when Liverpool secured the three points after Kostas Tsimikas’ corner was headed in by Matip in the 67th minute.

It was a weak effort by Southampton and Liverpool had little trouble seeing out the rest of the game and setting up what could be a tense final day.
