The English Premier League has updated its rules to allow teams to field up to five substitutes during matches from next season.
The rule change came after managers of Premier League clubs led by Liverpool’s Jurgen Klopp complained about player fatigue and injuries over the fixture-packed EPL season. However, opponents of the move claim it will favour the top-six clubs who have large squads.
Premier League shareholders agreed to increase the maximum number of substitutions permitted from three to five at a meeting on Thursday.
From next season, clubs will be permitted to use five substitutes, three times during a match, with an additional opportunity at half-time. Each team can also field up to nine substitute players on the team sheet.
The meeting also discussed the date for the summer transfer window as well as new Covid-19 measures.
The Summer 2022 Transfer Window will open on June 10 and close on September 1, in line with other European leagues.
Moreover, from April 4, the League will scrap twice-weekly Covid-19 testing of players and staff and move to symptomatic testing only.
Liverpool and Manchester United have confirmed they will play a friendly in Bangkok as part of their pre-season Asian summer tour in July, with tickets going on sale tomorrow.
The Premier League teams will vie for the Bangkok Century Cup at Rajamangala Stadium on July 12.
The event is forecast to generate up to 6 billion baht for the Thai economy, organiser Fresh Air Festival (FAF) said at Thursday’s press conference. The match will also be broadcast live in around 100 countries.
Manchester Utd and Liverpool greats Andy Cole and Phil Babb represented their teams at the press conference, held at Siam Paragon in Bangkok.
“United have phenomenal support from our fans in Thailand and we can’t wait to return to play for them again this summer. Our last visit was in 2013, where we received a wonderful welcome and I am sure the same will happen again when we play in July,” said Cole.
“Manchester United vs Liverpool is always a must-see fixture, whether a friendly game or not. It was a match I always looked forward to playing in, and with both clubs having great support in Thailand I am sure it will be an entertaining match and a great atmosphere for our fans,” added the former striker, who won eight major trophies in his six years at Manchester Utd including the treble of Premier League, FA Cup and UEFA Champions League in 1999.
Former Liverpool defender, Phil Babb, said: “I remember as a player how vital pre-season was, and it’s no different for teams today. This is when you start putting down markers for the season ahead, it’s such an important time.”
“And what a fantastic place here in Bangkok to kick off our pre-season for 2022/23. We all know how passionate our fans are in Thailand and we’re all really excited to see Liverpool go head-to-head with our historic rivals Manchester United. This promises to be a fantastic footballing occasion.”
The pitch and other features at the 59,000-seater Rajamangala Stadium will be upgraded to meet international standards, FAF CEO Vinij Lertratanachai told press.
Temporary seating and VIP hospitality lounges will be added on the running track in a bid to create the intense atmosphere of the Premier League. Meanwhile spectators will be required to wear masks as per Covid-19 regulations.
Tickets priced from 5,000 to 25,000 baht will be available at Thai Ticket Major counters or http://www.thaiticketmajor.com from Saturday (April 2) at 10am Thai time.
Thailand’s under-23 national football team lost to Iraq’s national team at 1-2 in the last match of Dubai Cup U23 tournament held in the United Arab Emirates on Tuesday night.
The latest defeat has resulted in Thai team losing three games in a row in this warm-up tournament.
TrueVisions announced on Monday it has secured rights to broadcast the English Premier League in Thailand for the next three seasons.
True Corp’s chief media officer Ong-Ard Prapakamol said the company has extended the Premier League broadcast contract from next season (2022/23) through to 2024/2025.
TrueVisions said it was the only pay television channel in Thailand that will broadcast all 380 matches of the Premier League season or 1,140 matches in total over three seasons.
The first match of the 2022/23 season will be broadcast on August 6 on all TrueVisions platforms – TV, smartphones, and online.
Premier League chief media officer Paul Molnar said the EPL was happy to extend its partnership with TrueVisions and trusted the Thai firm’s ability to broadcast league matches for the next three seasons.
The contract extension comes amid fierce competition for the rights to air EPL matches in Thailand.
In 2012, TrueVisions lost its bid for the 2013-2016 EPL contract to rival broadcaster CTH. However, TrueVisions restored Premier League content through beIN Sports in 2016.
In 2019, TrueVisions won the Thai rights for the Premier League for three seasons, from 2019 to 2022.
Thai golfer Atthaya Thitikul won her first LPGA Tour title at the JTBC Classic on Sunday in Carlsbad, southern California, by three-putting for a bogey on the second hole of a playoff with Nanna Koerstz Madsen from Denmark.
“It’s just crazy in my mind right now,” Thitikul said. “I cannot believe that I have become an LPGA winner. It feels amazing as well.”
After Koerstz Madsen’s 15-foot bogey putt hit the edge of the cup and stayed out, Thitikul rolled her 10-foot par try close and holed out for the victory.
“A lot things were going through my head,” Thitikul said. “But the one thing that I really wanted to focus was like just, ‘Do your every single shot’. Just like, ‘If you lose, if you win, this is another chance to learn. So do your best every single shot’. That’s it.”
At 19 years, 25 days, Thitikul is the youngest winner on the LPGA Tour since Brooke Henderson from Canada in the 2016 Portland Classic at 18 years, 9 months, 23 days. The Thai player also has two victories on the Ladies European Tour.
Meanwhile, Koerstz Madsen lost two weeks after winning a playoff in Thailand to become the first Danish champion in LPGA Tour history.
They matched pars on the first extra trip down 18, with Thitikul missing an 8-foot birdie try. Koerstz Madsen drove left on the second playoff hole and hit her second from an awkward stance near the cart part into the greenside water.
“It’s a hard shot,” Koerstz Madsen said. “It’s a hybrid from the rough — not a very good lie, above the feet. I just tried not to pull it too much from that lie, and then obviously I did not pull it. I pushed it quite a lot.”
Thitikul shot an 8-under 64, making nine birdies and a bogey to post a 16-under 272 at Aviara Golf Club in the final event before the first major of the season next week at Mission Hills in Rancho Mirage.
Koerstz Madsen, three strokes ahead of Na Rin An and six in front of Thitikul entering the round, had a 70. She took the lead with a birdie on the par-5 17th, then bogeyed 18 to fall into the playoff.
“It wasn’t a very good playoff,” Koerstz Madsen said. “I played a good week and I’m happy with the game. I could, maybe, have done a little better today, but it was what I could do.”
An was third at 15 under after a 68.
“I think I played well overall, but there were some parts that were a bit disappointing,” An said. “With a major tournament next week, I want to focus on my game even more.”
Another Thai, Pajaree Anannarukarn (68) was 14-under and tied for fourth with top-ranked Jin Young Ko (68) and Maude-Aimee Leblanc (68).
Red Bull’s Max Verstappen edged Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc by 0.5 seconds to win the F1 Saudi Arabian Grand Prix, with Chinese driver Zhou Guanyu finishing in 11th place.
Red Bull’s Max Verstappen passed Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc with four laps to go to win the F1 Saudi Arabian Grand Prix.
For the second race in a row, Verstappen and Leclerc spent several laps duelling for the lead, and swapped positions as they sought to use the DRS overtaking zones to their advantage.
Though Leclerc did his best to come back at Verstappen on the final lap, the Dutchman held on to win an enthralling race by just 0.5 seconds.

“It was really tough but a good race,” Verstappen said. “We were battling hard at the front and we just tried to play the long game.”
“It wasn’t easy playing smart tricks in the last corner, but eventually I managed to get ahead.”
Despite having lost out to Verstappen, Leclerc still leads the Drivers’ Championship following his win in Bahrain last week, and was magnanimous in defeat.
“I really enjoyed that race,” said Leclerc, who also took home the bonus point for fastest lap. “It’s hard racing but fair. Every race should be like this. It was fun, I’m of course disappointed, we wanted to win today.”
“The new regulations [aimed at making it easier to follow closely behind other cars] are definitely working. The second to last straight I was just part-throttle trying for Max to overtake me and for me to have the DRS. It worked once. Then the second time he understood so he braked very early and it was a bit of a mess.”
“It was fun, I liked racing like this and it was much easier to follow than I initially thought.”
Behind the top two, Leclerc’s teammate Carlos Sainz took third place, ahead of Verstappen’s teammate Sergio Perez, who had led the field away from his pole position, but dropped back after an unfortunately-timed Safety Car period saw him lose time to his rivals.
Red Bull
George Russell took fifth place in his Mercedes, followed by Alpine’s Esteban Ocon, who just held off the charging McLaren of Lando Norris on the run to the finish line.
Pierre Gasly finished eighth for AlphaTauri ahead of Haas’s Kevin Magnussen, with Lewis Hamilton salvaging tenth place for Mercedes after having qualified 15th.
China’s Zhou Guanyu just failed to finish in the points, coming home 11th after dropping to the back of the field following a poor start.
Leclerc leads the Drivers’ Championship with 45 points, ahead of Sainz on 33 and Verstappen with 25.
In the Constructors’ Championship, Ferrari lead the way with 78 points, with Mercedes second on 38, just ahead of Red Bull with 37.
The third round of the 2022 F1 season is the Australian Grand Prix at Melbourne’s Albert Park on April 10.
