Inaugural champion Arpichaya Yubol fired an immaculate 64 to take charge in the opening round of the Bt3 million Thailand Mixed hosted by TrustGolf at the Southern Hills and Country Club in Hat Yai, Songkhla on Thursday.

Starting at hole No 10, the 19-year-old sprinkled her back nine performance with six birdies before adding two more after the turn for eight under at the par 72 6,925-yard layout for the men and 6,051 for the women.

The teenager from Saraburi who won the first ever Thailand Mixed last year in Hua Hin established a three-stroke advantage over former Thailand PGA Tour winner Nirun Sae-ueng.

“It was a combination of luck and good form for me today,” said Arpichaya, winner of the Order of Merits on the Thai LPGA Tour in 2018. “I came here with a good game plan, hitting good shots and got a lot of birdies close to the pins.”

Arpichaya said she also took the advantage of her familiarity with the Southern Hill where her team settled at fourth in the National Games back in 2017.

“I remember this course well. I even shed a tear here after my team almost won a bronze in the National Games five years ago,” added the teenager who along with Chanettee Wannasaen remain the only two female champions on the TrustGolf Tour.

“Tomorrow, I will stick to my game plan. I will attack the pins on easy holes and play it safe on tough holes. Also, I hope to hit the fairway on the sixth hole which is the most challenging for me on this course,” she added.

Nirun, winner of the Thailand PGA Tour event in Lumphun 2016, committed a lone bogey on the fourth hole before he went on to shoot six birdies to settle with a 67.
“I played quite well except on the fourth hole where I stroke the ball to the left and ended up with my only bogey of the day. From then on, I focused on my tee shots and aimed for the fairways better,” said Nirun from Nakhon Pathom.

“About tomorrow, I will keep doing the same thing by hitting to the fairways and make the putts,” added Nirun who lost to Settee Prakrongvech by a stroke in the Boonchu Ruangkit Championship, an  All Thailand Golf Tour(ATGT)  event,  in January.

Eight players followed a stroke away at tied third, each with a 68. That included the talented Chanettee, winner of the previous Thailand Mixed circuit in Hua Hin, rising star Denwit David Boriboonsub, the 2021 Rookie of the Year on the ATGT, former SEA Games gold medallist Wichayanon Chothirunrungrueng, Thai LPGA Tour members Supamas Sangchan, Nattagade Nimitpongkul, Chonlatit Chuenboonngam,  Punnarai Meesom-us and former LPGA player Pavarisa Yoktuan.

LIV Golf Invitational Series set for innovative new format with $255m purse

The LIV Golf Invitational Series (www.livgolf.com) has launched a mission to modernise and supercharge golf via expanded opportunities for fans and players.

LIV Golf Invitational Series set for innovative new format with $255m purse

The LIV Golf Invitational Series (www.livgolf.com) has launched a mission to modernise and supercharge golf via expanded opportunities for fans and players.

The eight-event series will showcase an innovative new format starting in June.

LIV Golf Investments is providing more than US$400 million in seed money to launch the series, which will be the building blocks of a next-generation golf experience. Each event will consist of three rounds with 54 holes and no cut, as well as shotgun starts to ensure a faster and more exciting pace.

Players will consistently play head-to-head against their rivals throughout the year, providing an unmatched experience, the organisers said.

Fan research indicates a significant number of new fans would be enticed by a faster and shorter and non-traditional format of play. With smaller fields, fewer rounds, fewer events, shorter playing windows and modified shotgun starts, these events have been designed with fans as the top priority, the organisers said.

LIV Golf Investments’ CEO Greg Norman said, “I want golf to grow, players to have additional opportunities, and fans to have more fun. My mission is to help the game reach its full potential and we know the role of golf as an entertainment product is critical to overall participation in the sport.”

Norman added, “In many ways, we are a start-up. We have a long-term vision and aim to grow. I believe we have a very bright and exciting future.”

In this first year, the series will develop the new experience over seven regular-season events, culminating in a Team Championship match-play grand finale. Four events are slated to take place in the United States and three events are to be staged internationally with the Team Championship venue to be announced later. The schedule will not compete with the Majors, international team events or heritage events so players will always be able to make their own choices, the organisers said.

Team golf has proven it has the ability to produce some of the most exciting moments, and it is at the heart of the new structure. In year one, there will be a max of 48 players on 12 four-man teams and a truly global field with golfers invited from all tours around the world to beta test the new format. Each event will have teams comprised of different players determined by a draft.

“Our events are truly additive to the world of golf. We have done our best to create a schedule that allows players to play elsewhere, while still participating in our events. I believe players will increasingly make progress in achieving their right to play where they want. We will help in any way possible and will provide golfers with opportunities to achieve their full potential,” said Norman.

The total prize purse will reach $255 million. The first seven regular-season events will carry a total purse of $25 million, comprising $20 million in individual prizes (all players in the field earn a share) and $5 million for the top three teams. Following the first seven events, an Individual Champion will be crowned offering a total purse of $30 million for the top three individuals of the season. The eighth event will be a Team Championship that will provide $50 million in total prize funds.

The schedule for LIV Golf Invitational 2022:

• June 9-11: Centurion Golf Club – London

• July 1-3: Pumpkin Ridge Golf Club – Portland

• July 29-31: Trump National Golf Club Bedminster – New Jersey

• Sept 2-4: The International – Boston

• Sept 16-18: Rich Harvest Farms – Chicago

• Oct 7-9: Stonehill – Bangkok

• Oct 14-16: Royal Greens Golf Club – Jeddah

• Oct 28-30: Team Championship

As part of LIV’s commitment, plans include a major charitable contribution as part of its corporate social responsibility programme.

LIV Golf Invitational Series is owned and operated by LIV Golf Investments whose vision and mission is centred around making holistic and sustainable investments to enhance the global golf ecosystem and unlock its untapped worldwide potential.

In attendance was Chairman and CEO Chatri Sityodtong, who was joined by ONE Women’s Atomweight World Champion Angela Lee, ONE Women’s Atomweight World Grand Prix Champion Stamp Fairtex, 12-time Flyweight MMA World Champion Demetrious Johnson, and ONE Flyweight Muay Thai World Champion Rodtang Jitmuangnon, along with 12 other ONE X stars.

Chatri Sityodtong, Chairman and CEO of ONE Championship, stated: “It has been a crazy 10 years. When I look back at the journey, all the highs and lows … I could never have imagined this. I truly believe we have the greatest World Championship roster of any organization in the world. ONE X will be an event the whole world will talk about [for years to come], the single greatest martial arts event ever pulled off in history.”

“As a lifelong martial artist, this has been a very deeply personal journey. It’s one filled with gratitude — for my team, for our athletes, for our fans, our partners, our broadcasters, our brands — everybody who has been a part of this incredible journey, past and present. But as I always tell my team, this is just day one, literally the very beginning of the ONE story.”

Angela Lee, ONE Women’s Atomweight World Champion, stated: “I think it’s wrong to label this as a striker versus grappler fight. This is an MMA fight. We’re both mixed martial artists. Stamp, she has evolved a lot. I don’t see her as a striker only. I do understand that is where her strength lies. But I know that she’s coming into this fight as a well-rounded mixed martial artist. For me, being raised up, learning mixed martial arts as a whole, obviously I feel that MMA is where my strength lies. It’s a huge honor [to headline ONE X] and also a lot of pressure. There’s a lot of weight on my shoulders as it is, having the time off. But I’m definitely going to make up for that and make sure I put on a great performance on Saturday night.”

Stamp Fairtex, ONE Women’s Atomweight World Grand Prix Champion, stated: “For me, I will try my best to prevent her from using her grappling and takedowns. I’ve been training to use the best of my MMA skills for this fight. I’ve really been preparing for this, because as I’ve said before, she is my idol. This is a very great opportunity for me to finally get the chance to fight with Angela, someone that I look up to. I’m ready to take the belt from her. I want to bring the belt back to Thailand.”

Demetrious Johnson, 12-time Flyweight World Champion, stated: “I feel great. I’m super excited. You know, Rodtang, he’s one of the best in the world in Muay Thai. When I accepted this fight, I had a big smile on my face. I’m looking forward to the opportunity, and we’ll see how things go. I remember telling Chatri that I would love to try Muay Thai one day. And then when he presented this [special rules] fight, I was game for it. I’m looking forward to it.”

Rodtang Jitmuangnon, ONE Flyweight Muay Thai World Champion, stated: “I feel honored and I feel great that Khun Chatri approached me for this [special rules] fight. I’m really looking forward to going from Muay Thai to MMA. This is a good opportunity for me.”

The tricky features of the course are compared to the chessboard, a prob in the photo shoot, which requires prudent and strategic moves. Likewise, to conquer the Southern Hill, players have to come up with a good game plan before crafting each shot.

Players joining the photocall were Thai No 1 and former champion Sadom Kaewkanjana, two-time All Thailand Golf Tour winner Kwanchai Tannin, young gun Nutchanon Wivattanat, as well as rising  stars from the Thai LPGA Tour such as Onkanok Soisuwan, Chanoknan Angurasaranee and Pinyada Kuvanun.

Sprint sensation Puriphon, 16, smashes Thai men’s 100m, 200m records back to back

Puriphon Boonsorn doubled up by bagging the gold medal in the 200 metres at the National Games with a time of 20.58 seconds. In the process, he also broke his second national record in two days, lowering the mark of 20.69s set by Reanchai Sriharwong 23 years ago at the 1999 Southeast Asian Games.

Puriphon, from Samut Prakan, also broke the National Games record of 20.75s achieved by Sittichai Suwornprateep in 2006.

His feat came just one day after Puriphon won the 100 metres gold with a time of 10.19 seconds, shattering the national record of 10.23s set by Reanchai Sriharwong at the 1998 Asian Games. The Samut Prakan sprint sensation also bettered the 100 metres Games record of 10.32s set by Jirapong Meenapra in 2014.

Afan group of Serbian football club Red Star in a game on Thursday used banners to show U.S.-led NATO interventions around the world in the past decades.

During the halftime of the game at the Rajko Mitic stadium here, the Serbian fans raised huge banners listing U.S.-led NATO interventions in the past decades, one of which wrote of Beatles songwriter John Lennon’s anti-war song: “All we are saying is give peace a chance.”

The banners showed the NATO interventions in such countries and regions as the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, Cuba, Vietnam, Panama, Iraq, Yugoslavia, Afghanistan, Yemen, Somalia, Libya, Syria and so on.
