Indonesia’s tourism authorities have estimated that the MotoGP race would bring at least 64,000 visitors to the island as seen from the number of tickets that have been sold. The Southeast Asian country expects the event to help boost its economic recovery.

Indonesia's Lombok Island heats up to accommodate more tourists for MotoGP race

Andri Deya, 44, one of the homestay owners in Lombok Island, Indonesia’s West Nusa Tenggara (NTB) province, is seeking more houses near the Mandalika International Circuit for his business.

His own homestays and villas, about 10 minutes’ drive from the circuit, have been fully booked for March, and are ready to welcome tourists coming for the 2022 Indonesian Motorcycle Grand Prix (MotoGP).

Mandalika, a special economic zone in the southern part of Lombok, will host the highly-anticipated international race from March 18 to March 22. The 2.68-mile (about 4.3 km) circuit features 17 corners that showcase various Mandalika tourism spots.

“I work together with my colleague, who also runs a homestay business, to search for more empty houses. We’ll open them for rent as tourism accommodation. But first, we have to ensure that the houses are qualified enough,” Deya told Xinhua by phone on Saturday.

Indonesia’s tourism authorities have estimated that the MotoGP race would bring at least 64,000 visitors to the island as seen from the number of tickets that have been sold. The Southeast Asian country expects the event to help boost its economic recovery.

Unfortunately, the total hotel rooms, homestays and villas on the island are only available to accommodate around 24,000 people, according to the latest data from the NTB Tourism Agency.

Therefore, the authorities are currently trying to increase accommodation capacity, including preparing more homestays and glamping sites as alternatives.

Glamping is short for “glamorous camping,” a style of camping that involves staying in small, self-contained accommodation with a bed and cooking facilities.

Indonesia’s Minister of State Owned Enterprises Erick Thohir told reporters in Jakarta on Friday that the government has targeted preparing 100,000 units of homestays, including empty private houses belonging to residents to cover the shortage.

Minister of Tourism and Creative Economy Sandiaga Uno said that glamping sites, capsule hotels and camper vans could also be alternative places to stay.

“We have a number of glamping sites near Mandalika that will bring much excitement. So besides watching the MotoGP, the tourists can also enjoy the beauty of Lombok’s nature and experience its cultures,” Uno said in a virtual press conference on Friday, right after he paid a visit to the circuit to see the final pre-season test of the MotoGP race.

Glamping resort owner Stella has just finished the renovation of her resort located around 30 minutes by car to the circuit. She told Xinhua that the glamping site “needed a bit makeover” to comfort the tourists.

All of her 13 glamping tents have been fully booked for the entire March, the highest achievement the resort has ever recorded since Stella and her family started the business in 2014.

“This is the first time for my resort to be fully-booked for an entire month, particularly since the COVID-19 pandemic. I even have recruited several temporary staff to help me handle the peak days,” Stella said.

In addition, Indonesia’s Ministry of Transportation is preparing nearly 700 pinisi ships — iconic Indonesian traditional boats made of wood originating from Indonesia’s South Sulawesi province — and a number of cruises as additional accommodations.

Uno said that the number of accommodations would keep increasing and would be enough to reach the government’s target of providing at least 100,000 available rooms for the tourists.

“We’re still coordinating with the NTB regional authorities for any other available options, including mapping the locations of tourism villages. We’re sure that we’ll have enough accommodations for all tourists coming here,” Uno said.

Olympic fervor invigorates China’s consumer, capital market

The unparalleled passion ignited by the ongoing Beijing 2022 Olympic Winter Games has spurred China’s consumer and capital markets in the starting days of the Year of the Tiger.

Olympic fervor invigorates China's consumer, capital market

The enthusiasm of hundreds of millions of spectators has acted as a catalyst in creating new fashion trends in China’s speedy consumer market and in kindling new interests among investors in the country’s capital market.

SKIING AS A FASHION

“Did you go skiing during the holiday?” Many Chinese people wish to ask their colleagues upon their return to work following the Spring Festival holiday, which concluded on Feb. 6.

The Chinese people’s zeal for skiing peaked during this holiday as the opening of the Winter Olympics turned the already-popular sporting activity into a new fashion of consumption.

According to online travel service provider Qunar.com, skiing has made its way onto the list of top three hottest words searched on its platform for the first time ever, and the number of ski resort tickets sold on its platform doubled during the holiday compared to last year.

Data from China’s e-commerce giant JD.com shows that the overall transaction value of ski sports products increased by 322 percent year on year in the period, among which that of ski masks increased by 15 times.

Since China’s successful bid for the Winter Olympics in 2015, skiing, the once niche activity, quickly gained popularity in the country. Industry data shows that the number of skiers reached 13.05 million in 2019, nearly doubling from that in 2014, and ski resorts rose from 568 in 2015 to 770 in 2019, and are expected to top 1,000 this year.

Consumption data demonstrates a cross-country passion for skiing, with traditional resorts in China’s northeastern region and indoor resorts in the country’s south and southwestern regions both becoming hot tourism destinations, according to Alibaba’s travel branch Fliggy.

Considering skiing as one of the most popular new sports amid the rapid growth of China’s sports consumption, Ding Changfeng, a senior executive at Chinese property developer Vanke, predicts that the number of ski trips in China will rank first in Asia this year and reach the top globally by 2032, hitting 60 million.

MERCH SELLING LIKE HOT CAKES

In addition to the sweeping popularity of winter sports, Olympic passion has also boosted the sales of related products, be it Olympic mascot merchandise or sportswear with special designs or those worn by celebrity athletes.

Bing Dwen Dwen, the mascot of the Beijing 2022 Olympic Winter Games, exemplifies spectators’ eagerness to own what they see and fancy.

On Feb. 4, the Games’ opening day, the mascot became the most popular word searched on JD.com in 11 cities and provinces, while over 1 million people flooded the official Olympics online store on e-commerce platform Tmall.

A week into Beijing 2022, consumers are still actively searching for opportunities to buy a Bing Dwen Dwen, whether by joining online flash sales or waiting in long queues outside licensed merchandise stores.

For days, trending topics on social media have fueled an increase in demand for Olympic-themed sports products, such as down jackets worn by numerous national teams during the opening ceremony, panda-themed skateboards, sportswear worn by Olympic champion Gu Ailing, among other items.

HEAT IN CAPITAL MARKET

The widespread Olympic zeal has permeated China’s capital market, with investors showing confidence in companies in a variety of Olympic-related fields and entrepreneurs ready to tap opportunities in the ice-snow industry.

Hot sales of Olympic-related products helped increase investment in suppliers. For example, the stock price of Beijing Yuanlong Yato Culture Dissemination Co., Ltd, a licensed manufacturer and retailer of the Olympics merchandise, surged nearly 50 percent in the first trading week of the Year of the Tiger, while that of ANTA Sports Products Limited, a leading sports products company, has reached a new high since the start of 2022.

China Mobile Limited also saw its stock price register double-digit growth from Feb. 7 to 11, benefiting from its broadcasting rights of the Games and the cooperation with several celebrity athletes.

In the field of infrastructure construction, developers of Olympic venues and hotels such as Jangho Group Co., Ltd. and China Railway Group Limited also reported rising stock prices.

Analysts from Guoyuan Securities have pointed out the enormous potential for business opportunities in fields such as venue construction, sponsorship services, technical support, energy and transport facilities, as well as the sale of licensed merchandise.

Besides, China’s ice-snow sector has attracted an increasing number of enterprises due to its vast potential. More than one third of the country’s 21,500 existing ice-snow firms as of January 2022 were registered in the last two years.

Investment and financing of ski-related enterprises have exceeded 185 million yuan (about 29 million U.S. dollars) since 2021, while the number of new firms in the ice-snow tourism sector rose by 15 percent annually in the 2018-2020 period, industry data shows.

China’s ice-snow industry expanded from 270 billion yuan in 2015 to 600 billion yuan in 2020, according to an industry report. The scale of the sector is expected to top 1 trillion yuan by 2025, accounting for about 20 percent of the entire sports industry.

Rising star Chanettee Wannasaen became the second female winner in the Thailand Mixed hosted by TrustGolf following a stroke victory over former LPGA player Pavarisa Yoktuan at the Springfield Royal Country Club in Cha-Am on Sunday.

Chanettee emerges second female Thailand Mixed champ with win at Springfield

The precocious teenager carded a final round 71 and a total 18 under-par 270 to win the Bt3 million tournament and emerged as the second woman to win on the Thailand TrustGolf Tour after Arpichaya Yubol in the  inaugural Thailand Mixed at the Black Mountain Golf Club in February last year.

“I’m quite happy to win this tournament although I didn’t play the way I would have wanted to. I was inconsistent all day and made only a few putts. The pin positions and the greens are tough today,” said the 17-year-old girl who clawed her way back from the hazard to finish with a par putt on the 18th hole.

This is Channettee’s second career title after she won her maiden in the SAT-TWT Open at the Phoenix Gold Golf and Country Club last November. Last month she earned her slot into the Thailand LPGA (due in March in Pattaya) after winning the National Qualifiers event for the second consecutive year.

“I want to have a better finish than last year (tied 57th) in the home LPGA. For my big goal this season, I want to gain a slot on the LPGA through the Q-School later his year,” said the teenager who won the winner’s prize money of Bt450,000 plus a scholarship to pursue a degree in golf at Rangsit University.

For the first time, the top three positions were dominated by the women with Pavarisa coming at second , followed by  Trichat Cheenglab.

Pavarisa, 27-year-old from Nakhon Si Thammarat, shot six birdies against three bogeys to finish with a 69 and a four-day total of 17 under-par-271. She settled at lone second which was her best finish in the Thailand Mixed. Besides, she would return home Bt300,000 richer from the runner-up’s prize money.

Trichat, who won at this course on the Thai LPGA Tour event last October, rounded up the top three by hitting a final 71 and a total 272. She won Bt180,000 for third place.

Chiang Mai-based Thaya Limpipolpaibul followed a shot behind at lone fourth which was the best position by the men. He signed off with a 71 for a total 273. This is, however, his best career result  in a four-day tournament.

Siripob Yabala won the male amateur award following a 274 which placed at joint fifth alongside Waris Manthorn, Dussavi Soopimjit and former champion Arpichaya. Pimmada Wongthanavimok won the best female amateur after she shot a total 287.

Promising teenager Chanettee Wannasaen crafted a brilliant ending eagle to hold onto the lead after round three of the Bt3 million Thailand Mixed hosted by TrustGolf at the Springfield Royal Country Club in Cha-Am on Saturday.

Chanettee fires brilliant eagle to stay on top at Thailand Mixed

After struggling with her putts and going through 10 holes without a birdie, the 17-year-old girl finally got into the grove as she shot three straight birdies from holes 11-13. Despite a double bogey on the 14th hole, she rebounded to send home a 36-foot eagle shot to remain on top of the leaders’ board after a third round 69 and 17 under-par-199.

“I was a bit disappointed with myself by not shooting any score even I hit close to the pins at the front nine. But then I shot three birdies in a row only to make a double bogey by hitting the ball to the pond,” said Chanettee, winner of the Thailand LPGA National Qualifiers a few weeks ago.

“On the 18th,  I putted the ball down the slope for an eagle. I really needed it after that double bogey. For the final round, I’m still confident with my chance as this is not a big course. I need to shoot scores on par five holes,” said the teenager.

With a win on Sunday, the talented teenager will become the second female winner on the Thailand TrustGolf Tour after Arpichaya Yubol who triumphed in the first Thailand Mixed 12 months ago.
Two-time Thai LPGA Tour winner Trichat Cheenglab produced an error free 65 to trail the leader by two strokes on a total 15 under-par-201.

“ I’m quite confident that if I play my game, hitting the fairways and go for birdie putts, I would stand a great chance on Sunday. I’m a bit excited to be in this position, but I will try to stay focussed on my game,” said the 26-year-old Bangkokian whose best finish in the Thailand Mixed was at joint third at the Black Mountain Golf Club in November.

Three shots behind the lead at tied third were Thaya Limpipolpaibul, the only man in the top three and former LPGA player Pavarisa Yoktuan.

Thaya, 24 from Chiang Mai, hit seven birdies with one bogey on the 16th hole for a 66 and a total 202. He has been chasing after his first career title after finishing at fifth as his best results in three tournaments.

“I didn’t look at the score and just realized I was three behind the lead after the post-match interview. I’m quite excited and would love to win my maiden title this week,” said Thaya.

Pavarisa, also with a round of 66, said: “To be in this position, you cannot help expecting yourself to win. But I don’t want to get  under pressure. I have to relax like the way I played at the back nine today in order to produce good results.”

ONE Championship™ (ONE) returned with ONE: BAD BLOOD, which aired live from the Singapore Indoor Stadium. The stacked fight card featured a showdown for the ONE Interim Heavyweight World Championship and a battle between highly ranked flyweight Muay Thai contenders.

In the main event, undefeated Russian powerhouse Anatoly Malykhin maintained his unblemished record, knocking out previously unbeaten Kirill Grishenko to capture the ONE Interim Heavyweight World Championship.

Malykhin’s overwhelming speed and power was on display almost immediately as he stalked Grishenko across the Circle. A stream of heavy left and right hands forced the Belarusian on the defensive. With Malykhin continuing to unload, it was only a matter of time before a fight-ending strike connected. That punch came late in the second round, with Malykhin separating Grishenko from his senses to score the thrilling stoppage victory.

Along with the interim belt, Malykhin earned a pair of US$50,000 bonuses for his electric performance.

In the co-main event, former ONE Flyweight Muay Thai World Champion Jonathan Haggerty overcame a spirited effort from Lumpinee Stadium Champion Mongkolpetch Petchyindee to score a unanimous decision victory. Second-ranked Haggerty came out firing in the first round, forcing #4-ranked Mongkolpetch to the back foot with lightning-quick combinations. Mongkolpetch hurt the Englishman in the second round when he launched a furious offensive, landing a variety of strikes. In the middle of the third round, Haggerty connected with his razor-like right elbow, creating some damage over his Thai opponent’s left eye. He then put the pressure on Mongkolpetch until the final bell, earning the pivotal win and a US$50,000 performance bonus.

Chinese firecracker Chen Rui put himself back on the winning track by defeating Mark Abelardo in a three-round bantamweight barn burner. Abelardo looked to rush at Chen with a volley of haymakers, but the latter showcased incredible resistance. Each time Abelardo barreled his way to the inside, Chen connected with precise counterpunching. In the end, the Chinese athlete’s sharper strikes trumped Abelardo’s bullish strength, as he claimed the victory by unanimous decision.

In a battle of youth and experience, rising star Jihin Radzuan outlasted two-time ONE Women’s Atomweight World Title challenger Mei Yamaguchi for a hard-fought victory. Yamaguchi’s superior striking power was evident early, as she landed a plethora of thudding right hands in the first 10 minutes. But Jihin was able to stave off the majority of her opponent’s attacks, while she scored with strikes of her own. In the end, the superficial damage Yamaguchi incurred worked against her, as Jihin earned a tight unanimous decision.

ONE Championship debutant Woo Sung Hoon scored a scintillating knockout victory, stopping Yodkaikaew Fairtex in just 18 seconds to record the second-fastest KO in ONE flyweight history. Yodkaikaew started off aggressively with his kicks, but Woo caught the Thai fighter with a right hand to the temple as he came forward. The South Korean followed up with a pair of uppercuts to seal the deal, taking home a US$50,000 performance bonus for his efforts.

Danial Williams returned to mixed martial arts competition and knocked out former ONE Strawweight World Champion Dejdamrong Sor Amnuaysirichoke in the second round. The two former Muay Thai World Champions went to war from the opening bell, as they met at the center of the Circle to trade power shots. Williams got the better of Dejdamrong in the majority of the exchanges, and then he connected on a crushing body shot to crumple his Thai opponent and end matters abruptly.

In the ONE: BAD BLOOD lead card, Dustin Joynson overcame a game challenger in heavyweight newcomer Hugo Cunha to win by split decision after three grueling rounds. Highly regarded atomweight Lin Heqin used her height and reach advantage to keep Bi Nguyen at bay and cruise to a unanimous decision victory. And newcomer Odie Delaney defeated Thomas Narmo with an impressive finish, securing a shoulder lock from mount to force the tap and record the fastest submission in ONE heavyweight history.

The Sunoto vs. Tial Thang bantamweight mixed martial arts bout ended in a no-contest ruling after Sunoto took an illegal knee strike to the groin and was unable to continue.

17-year-old Chanettee enjoys perfect round to lead Thailand Mixed Halfway

Teenage rising star Chanettee Wannasaen fired a sizzling 63 to steal the limelight after round two of the Bt3 million Thailand Mixed hosted by TrustGolf at the Springfield Royal Country Club in Cha-Am on Friday.

17-year-old Chanettee enjoys perfect round to lead Thailand Mixed Halfway

The 17-year-old girl from Chiang Mai produced four birdies at the front nine and four more after the turn (four straights from holes 10-13) for an immaculate second round performance which saw her lead the halfway stage on 14 under-par-130 in the season-opener of the Thailand TrustGolf Tour series.

“I was playing unbelievably well by shooting scores in all par five holes. I felt confident on the course as it isn’t that big. I was able to hit the ball close the pins in several holes,” said Chanettee who just won her second consecutive National Qualifiers for a berth into the LPGA Thailand event due next month in Chonburi.

The up-and-coming Chanettee has always emerged as a strong contender in the Thailand Mixed series, posting three top five finishes including a tied third in the fourth circuit at the Black Mountain Golf Club in Hua Hin in November.

“I will stick to my game plan like I did in the second round. But I’m going to use my 3 wood in some holes instead of a driver. I think I’m more comfortable with my 3 wood in those holes and should hit the greens more,” added the teenager who also bagged a SAT-TWT Open title at the Phoenix Gold Golf and Country Club last November.

With two eagles on the second and finishing holes plus five birdies against a lone bogey on the fourth, Sherman Santiwiwatthanaphong shot a second round 64 to fall two shots off the lead on 12 under-par-132.

“Things just went my way with a little bit of luck. I made a 20-foot par putt and shot two eagles. I came to this tournament really well prepared by focusing on my fitness, ball control and concentration,” said the former LPGA player.

Settee Prakrongvech, winner of the Boonchua Ruangkit Championship two weeks ago in Nakhon Ratchasima, hit an eagle on the seventh hole, five birdies against three bogeys for a 68 to sit four back with a total 10 under-par-134.

“Overall, I was happy with my round even though I made some bad putts. I hit the iron well and hit some good shots. I just didn’t make a few putts,” said Settee whose lone third finish in the inaugural episode last February at the Black Mountain was his best attempt in the Thailand Mixed to date.

“For tomorrow, I will have to make birdies on some easy holes as this is not a big course. I need to hit the iron well and make some good putts,” said the 27-year-old from Chonburi.
Overnight leader Dussavi Sooopimjit hit a 71 to come at shared fourth on 136 along with several players including  Thaya Limpipolpaibul, Jaravee Boonchant, Trichat Cheenglab, Sangchai Kaewcharoen, and Nattagate Nimitpongkul.

From smashed skull to silver medal – how Colby Stevenson pulled off Olympic miracle

The US freeskier Colby Stevenson has completed a miracle comeback at the 2022 Winter Olympics, soaring to a silver medal just a few years after shattering his skull into 48 pieces in a car crash that almost ended his life.

From smashed skull to silver medal – how Colby Stevenson pulled off Olympic miracle

Colby crashed out of his first two runs in the men’s Big Air freestyle skiing competition, before nailing his final effort for a score of 183.00 to bag silver behind Birk Ruud of Norway (187.75).

Colby fell asleep at the wheel in Idaho on the night of May 8, 2016, crashing his car and smashing his skull in an accident that left him with dramatic scars to this day.

He somehow returned to freestyle skiing – one of the Winter Games’ most dangerous disciplines – but suffered more trauma two years later.

“I was heartbroken in 2018 when I tore my shoulder out and didn’t get to come to the Olympics,” he said.

This year, he was happy just to make the team for Beijing 2022.

Former Argentine Olympian gives thumb-up to organization of Beijing 2022 Winter Games

“Big Air’s not typically an event I do well in. I’ve never been on the podium in Big Air, so my expectations weren’t super high for landing on the podium, but I knew I was throwing down some new tricks and I had a good chance at doing well, so I just focused on that.”

Colby went into the competition armed with a new trick called the “nose butter 16 with Japan grab”.

“I believe I’m the first one to do it with a Japan grab, so I’m super hyped to do that. Honestly this feels like something straight out of a movie scene. I’m just on a cloud right now! I don’t know really how else to explain it. It’s my first big air podium finish, and it’s here at the Olympics. What an amazing thing.”

Doctors gave him small odds of returning to competitive freestyle skiing after car crash. As well as fracturing his cranium, he broke ribs, an eye socket, jaw and neck in the accident and had to have two major surgeries, including one to put a titanium plate in his skull.

He said, “I really don’t focus on that. It’s something of the past, but to come back from that and be able to ski at a high level again. I feel super lucky to be able to do that.

“If I can survive that, I can survive any kind of crash I’m going to take out here; that’s kind of how I think about it. I’m just going to give it my all and keep pushing. This is what I love to do and nothing’s going to stop me from doing it.”
