An infection-hit Thailand lost 7-0 to Japan in the AFC Women’s Asian Cup quarter-finals on Sunday, damaging their chances of qualifying for the FIFA Women’s World Cup.

Thailand lose 7-0 in blow to FIFA Women’s World Cup qualification hopes

Thailand had only 14 players available for the last-eight match in India after Covid-19 swept through the squad.

The depleted Thais fought bravely but Japan slowly took control of the match, clinching a semi-final berth powered by Yuika Sugasawa’s hat-trick.

However, Thailand can still qualify for the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup via the play-offs.

The Thai women play Vietnam on Wednesday followed by Taiwan on Friday. If they win both those games, Thailand will book their berth in next year’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand. If not, they will have to qualify via inter-confederation play-offs.

Nadal takes 21st Grand Slam title at Australian Open

Rafael Nadal has won a record 21st Grand Slam after recovering from 0-2 down to beat Daniil Medvedev in a five-set thriller.

Nadal takes 21st Grand Slam title at Australian Open

Rafael Nadal made history with his 2-6, 6-7 (5), 6-4, 6-4, 7-5 turnaround victory over Russian world No. 2 Daniil Medvedev in the Australian Open final, becoming the first male player ever to win 21 Grand Slam titles.

The five-set blockbuster match on Sunday night lived up to all the expectations surrounding a Grand Slam final. It lasted a staggering five hours and 24 minutes; more than 30 minutes longer than the tournament’s second-longest match this year.

Much was on the line for both players going into the symbolic clash between the new generation of rising stars and the old generation of weathered tennis veterans.

Midway through the first set, the 25-year-old Russian made the first break of the game, consolidating a 4-2 lead with the help of an untroubled service game.

Two double faults from the Spanish 35-year-old allowed Medvedev to double his advantage with a love-game break and finish out the set comfortably. In the first set, the shaky Spanish No. 6 seed committed some 16 unforced errors to his opponent’s five.

In set two, Medvedev managed to hold on with a series of break backs and a narrow hold of service. The Russian closed out the grueling 84-minute-long set in a comeback tiebreaker.

Refusing to throw in the towel at two sets down, Nadal continued to push against an increasingly frustrated Medvedev. He closed out the third set with a ninth-game break followed by a perfect game of service.

As the game went into hour four in the fourth set, Nadal’s experience began to triumph over Medvedev’s early-match energy. He made an early game-three break against the faltering Russian, and his closing service game was met with the roar of the overwhelming pro-Nadal crowd.

With things all tied up it was winner-takes-all in set five.

The exhausted contenders traded service for the first four games, but Nadal found a crack in game five and made a break. But just as the Spaniard was about to close out the championship, Medvedev made a last-minute break back, bringing the score to 5-5 in the final set.

In an epic finish, Nadal broke back against the Russian before serving through to 40-0. And with three championship points up his sleeve, one final backhand winner saw Nadal take his 21st title and his rightful place in the annals of tennis history.

Making his victory speech in the early hours of the morning, Nadal thanked his team, the audience, and extended admiration to the Russian runner-up.

“It has been one of the most emotional matches of my tennis career and to share the court with you is just an honor,” said Nadal.

“I really can’t explain the feelings that I have right now, but I am going to keep trying my best to keep coming next year,” Nadal said, casting hope for an appearance in next year’s Australian Open.

Medvedev, winning the 2021 US Open last September, fell short of becoming the first man in the Open Era to win his second Grand Slam title in the tournament following his first.

The red, white and blue of the Thai flag has been raised at the Olympic Village in Beijing ahead of Winter Games after the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) agreed to remove Thailand from its blacklist.

In October, WADA slapped Thailand with a one-year ban for failing to update its anti-doping law in line with WADA’s global guidelines. As a result, the Kingdom was banned from hosting global sports events or using the Thai flag at international sports competitions.

Thailand amended the relevant law on December 31, 2021, and WADA has reportedly agreed to lift the ban next month.

The 2022 Winter Olympics will be held from February 4 to 20. Four Thai athletes are competing in the Games: Mark Chanloung and Karen Chanloung in the cross-country skiing, and Nicola Zanon and Mida Fah Jaiman in slalom.

The latest developments on two original participants for One: Only The Brave on 28 January prompted changes to the event’s main and lead cards.

Nattawut steps in to face Allazov at ONE: ONLY THE BRAVE

Smokin’ Jo Nattawut will now compete in the One featherweight kickboxing World Grand Prix semifinals to replace top-ranked contender Marat Grigorian, who withdrew due to COVID-19 health and safety protocols.

The Thai faces No.4 ranked Chingiz “Chinga” Allazov in the co-main event.

Nattawut has a 71-8-2 career Muay Thai and kickboxing record and is coming off a victory over Armenian-Russian Yurik “Mee Khao Jomhot” Davtyan at One: Nextgen II.

Meanwhile, Allazov scored a first-round knockout over French-Algerian Samy “AK47” Sana at One: First Strike in October to book a semifinal slot in the Grand Prix.

In the main event, No.3 ranked Sitthichai “Killer Kid” Sitongpeenong will also slug it out with Davit Kiria for a place in the kickboxing World Grand Prix final.

The 30-year-old Thai is on a two-fight win streak after edging both Tawanchai PK.Saenchai Muaythaigym and Tayfun “Turbine” Ozcan via split decision.

Kiria might be the underdog in this pairing. Still, he’s coming in confident after knocking out Enriko “The Hurricane” Kehl in round one of their quarterfinal bout at One: First Strike.

Former One welterweight World Champion Zebaztian “The Bandit” Kadestam will no longer participate on the card as well because of a non-COVID-related sickness. Instead, Brazilian Edson “Panico” Marques gets the call to compete versus Hiroyuki “Japanese Beast” Tetsuka.

Marques has a 9-1 mixed martial arts record and an impressive 77 percent finishing rate. Tetsuka also improved his record to 10-4 after a knockout victory over Agilan “Alligator” Thani.

Nattawut’s original opponent, Lithuanian sensation Dovydas “Rimkenzo” Rimkus, will now trade blows with Russian hard-hitter Ivan Kondratev.

Nattawut steps in to face Allazov at ONE: ONLY THE BRAVE

Rimkus owns an 8-0 Muay Thai and kickboxing record and won his One debut opposite China’s Zhang “Bamboo Sword” Chunyu. On the other hand, Kondratev is a two-time Russian kickboxing champion with a 20-4-1 career slate.

Finally, the lead card will feature a bantamweight MMA contest between the debuting Brazilian Micael De Jesus and Mongolian Purev “The People’s Kid” Otgonjargal, who remains undefeated after two fights in One.

Download the One Super App to catch all the action from One: Only The Brave this Friday, 28 January, at the Singapore Indoor Stadium.

You can also watch the fights live, beginning with the lead card on AIS Play at 5:30 p.m. Indochina Time (ICT). Thairath TV32 will also air a same-day delay at 10:40 p.m. ICT.

At least eight people have been killed and dozens injured in a crush at an African Cup of Nations match in Cameroon.

Eight people reported dead in crush at African Cup of Nations match

The incident occurred on Monday at Olembe Stadium in the capital, Yaounde, where host country Cameroon were playing Comoros in the round-of-16.

Nurse Olinga Prudence from nearby Messassi hospital described the scene to reporters: “Some of the injured are in desperate condition. We will have to evacuate them to a specialised hospital.”

Tournament officials said more than 50,000 fans tried to cram into the stadium, which has capacity for 48,000. Olembe Stadium normally has room for 60,000 spectators, but Covid restrictions had cut that limit to 80 per cent.

“CAF is currently investigating the situation and trying to get more details on what transpired,” said the tournament organiser, Confederation of African Football.
“We are in constant communication with Cameroon government and the local organising committee,” the statement continued.

Monday’s match went ahead despite the deadly crush, with Cameroon securing a 2-1 win to advance to the quarter-finals.

On Thursday, roughly 40 fans spilled onto the pitch in the match between the Ivory Coast and Algeria at Japoma Stadium in Douala, Cameroon. The stadium appeared to be filled to overcapacity. No injuries were reported, but CAF fined both teams and Cameroon officials for insufficient security measures.

“Match officials reported that at the end of the match, the pitch was invaded by around 40 supporters, mainly from the East stand,” the CAF statement reads. “The report noted that the number of security stewards was insufficient to control the commotion triggered by an Algerian supporter who invaded the pitch.”

CAF’s disciplinary board issued a subsequent “warning to Cameroonian Football Federation for the lack of security during the said match and stern reminder to strictly comply with the safety regulations”.

The new-look team went ahead from a corner in the 27th minute, when Wilaiporn Boothduang played a short pass to Jaruwan Chaiyarak who crossed for Kanyanat to score.

Nine minutes later, Taneekarn dribbled into the box and put Kanyarat through to bag her second goal.

Kanyarat clinched her hat-trick in the 71st minute, firing home from distance with her right foot.

Muay Thai grabs global spotlight as Thailand seeks heavyweight sporting status

Thailand is betting on Muay Thai to earn the Kingdom a place among the heavyweights of international sport, according to the National Identity Foundation.

Muay Thai grabs global spotlight as Thailand seeks heavyweight sporting status

The foundation on Monday announced it has joined with the International Federation of Muaythai Associations (IFMA) to promote global recognition of Muay Thai culture.

The move comes after Thailand’s traditional martial art gained Olympic recognition last year.
Foundation secretary-general Somphan Jarumilin signed a contract with IFMA to spotlight Muay Thai boxing, the combatants’ waikru dance and pipe music on the international sporting stage.
Somphan said the move is aimed at boosting Thailand’s profile among the international sports community. Thais’ pride in their fighting tradition was rooted in the fact that Muay Thai was used in ancient times to help the country maintain its independence, he added.
He also highlighted the five pillars of Muay Thai: culture, honour, respect, justice and excellence.
“The five pillars also form the basis of humanity and share principles with other sports that have been recognised by the International Olympics Committee,” he said.
To enhance its global profile, competitions for the waikru dance and Muay Thai attacking gestures may be held in future, he added.
