Apple has unveiled a new version of its MacBook Air laptop, this time made of recycled aluminum, as well as a new Mac Mini and an iPad Pro, all pricier than their predecessors.

Nearly 10 years after the launch of the first MacBook Air by the late Steve Jobs, his successor Tim Cook presented on Tuesday the latest version of this PC, just 1.56 cm thick, compared to 1.94 cm (0.75 inches).

This model was made with 100 percent recycled aluminum and recycled plastic, a change which reduces its carbon footprint, Apple said.

Last year Apple announced it would aim for a circular production system for its iPhones, which it said would allow for making new products with recycled materials.

The Mac Mini unveiled Tuesday — the latest version of Apple’s high performance mini desktop computer — is also manufactured with completely recycled aluminum and plastic as well.

Apple is not the only computer manufacturer to use such material, but a report by Greenpeace last year called it among the best performers in the industry in terms of going easy on the environment.

In its most basic model, with 128 gigabytes of memory, the MacBook Air will be available November 7 in the United States at a price of $1,199, which is $200 more than the simplest current version of the computer.

The Mac Mini comes out on the same date for $799, compared to $499 for the most affordable version today.

Apple also unveiled a new version of its iPad Pro tablet with a screen that looks nearly edge-to-edge and boasts a faster processor. It includes features from the latest iPhones.

The changes are part of an effort to overhaul a product that has seen sliding sales in recent years.

Sales of iPads peaked in the first quarter of 2014 at 26 million units. By comparison the company sold about half that many last year in the final quarter.

The 11-inch model starts at $799, up from $649 for the 10.5-inch version from last year.

Washington

The United States indicted 10 Chinese, including two intelligence officers, over a five-year scheme to steal technology from US and French aerospace firms by hacking into their computers.

The indictments came 20 days after the Department of Justice obtained the unprecedented extradition of a senior Chinese intelligence official from Belgium to stand trial in the United States for running the alleged state-sponsored effort to steal US aviation industry secrets.

The Justice Department said the Chinese Ministry of State Security, through its Jiangsu province unit, engineered the effort to steal the technology underlying a turbofan engine used in US and European commercial airliners.

The engine was being developed through a partnership between a French aerospace manufacturer with an office in Suzhou, Jiangsu province, and a US firm, it said.

The companies were not named, but earlier indictments pointed to Cincinnati, Ohio-based GE Aviation, one of the world’s leading aircraft engine manufacturers.

Meanwhile France’s Safran Group, which was working with GE Aviation on engine development, has an office in Suzhou.

The operation first became public in September when the US indicted a Chinese-American engineer for helping steal files at the direction of a top official of the Jiangsu State Security bureau.

Then on October 10 the Justice Department announced it had obtained the extradition of Xu Yanjun, the deputy division director of the Jiangsu bureau, from Belgium where he had apparently been lured and arrested in a counterintelligence operation.

Tuesday’s indictments named the two officials of the Jiangsu security bureau who apparently worked under Xu, six hackers who worked under them, and two men who worked for the French company.

The case has added to rising tensions between Beijing and Washington over geopolitics, trade, hacking and corporate espionage.

After Xu’s arrest, China said the United States was “making something out of thin air.”

The new indictments detailed efforts to use malware and phishing techniques to hack into target computers and remove data on the engines and parts.

“At the time of the intrusions, a Chinese state-owned aerospace company was working to develop a comparable engine for use in commercial aircraft manufactured in China and elsewhere,” the Justice Department said.

“For the third time since only September, the National Security Division, with its US Attorney partners, has brought charges against Chinese intelligence officers from the JSSD and those working at their direction and control for stealing American intellectual property,” said Assistant Attorney General John Demers.

“This is just the beginning. Together with our federal partners, we will redouble our efforts to safeguard America’s ingenuity and investment.”

The FBI worked ont he case together with France’s General Directorate for Internal Security.

NASA’s Parker Solar Probe, which launched earlier this year, has set a new record for becoming the closest human-made object to the Sun, the US space agency announced Monday.

“The spacecraft passed the current record of 26.55 million miles (42.73 million kilometers) from the Sun’s surface on Oct. 29, 2018, at about 1:04 pm EDT (1704 GMT),” said a NASA statement.

“The previous record for closest solar approach was set by the German-American Helios 2 spacecraft in April 1976.”

The $1.5 billion unmanned spacecraft launched in August, on a strategic mission to protect the Earth by unveiling the mysteries of dangerous solar storms.

Its goal is make a series of 24 flybys past our scorching star.

Another record is in sight for the Parker Solar Probe.

The spaceship is “expected to break the record for fastest spacecraft traveling relative to the Sun on Oct. 29 at about 10:54 pm EDT (Tuesday 0254 GMT),” NASA said.

“The current record for heliocentric speed is 153,454 miles (246,960 kilometers) per hour, set by Helios 2 in April 1976.”

Parker’s first close encounter with the Sun is scheduled for October 31.

Its final close approach — coming just 3.83 million miles from the Sun’s surface — is expected in 2024, NASA said.

IBM buys software company Red Hat for $34bn in bid for cloud dominance

Tech October 29, 2018 06:50

By Agence France-Presse
Washington

IBM said Sunday it has reached a deal to buy open source software company Red Hat for $34 billion, among the biggest tech mergers in history which the computing giant said would enhance its cloud offerings.

If approved it will be the third biggest tech merger in history, according to business news site CNBC. Red Hat said it was the biggest involving a software company.

The deal will see IBM acquire all of the issued and outstanding common shares of Red Hat for $190.00 per share in cash, more than $70 above the $116.68 at which Red Hat was trading on close of business Friday.

“The acquisition of Red Hat is a game-changer. It changes everything about the cloud market,” said Ginni Rometty, IBM’s chairman, president and CEO.

“IBM will become the world’s number one hybrid cloud provider, offering companies the only open cloud solution that will unlock the full value of the cloud for their businesses.”

Cloud computing refers to the delivery of computing services, including storage and software, over the internet to achieve economies of scale.

Hybrid cloud relates to the linking of public and private cloud platforms.

IBM’s Rometty added that most companies are currently being held back in their cloud transformation due to closed platforms.

Once known primarily for its computer hardware, IBM has made cloud computing a priority in its growth strategy, like Amazon and Microsoft.

Over the past few years, the company has been refocusing on markets such as analytics, mobile and security, grouped under the banner of “strategic imperatives” and designed to offset the decline of its traditional activities. These now represent about half of its turnover.

– Feather in the hat –

Adhering to the adage of not fixing what’s not broken, Red Hat will continue to operate as a separate unit.

Red Hat will continue to be led by its president and CEO Jim Whitehurst and its current management team. Whitehurst also will join IBM’s senior management team and report to Rometty.

“Today is a banner day for open source,” said Paul Cormier, Red Hat’s vice president and president of products and technologies. “The largest software transaction in history and it’s an open source company. Let that sink in for a minute. We just made history.”

Founded in 1993, Red Hat launched its famous version of Linux OS a year later, becoming a pioneering proponent of the open source movement that arose to counter giants like Microsoft whose models were based on keeping their source code secret.

The Raleigh, North Carolina based company is today present in 35 countries and employs some 12,000 people, and is one of the best-known open-source players whose customers pay for tailor-made solutions.

The company achieved a net profit of $259 million in fiscal year 2018 on a turnover of $ 2.9 billion (up 21 percent on 2017).

– Cash payment –

Even for a giant like IBM, which had a $79 billion turnover for $5.8 billion in profits in 2017 — the amount is huge.

The company will be paying through cash and debt, as opposed to share exchange, but did not specify the proportions.

IBM predicted the move would accelerate its revenue growth, gross margin and free cash flow within 12 months of closing.

The deal remains subject to Red Hat shareholder approval as well as regulatory approvals. It is expected to close in the latter half of 2019.

EXPERTS AND social entrepreneurs have placed high hopes on benefiting from the advanced blockchain technology that would be able to play a major role in curbing corruption and enhancing transparency in social justice.

“Blockchain could be used to promote transparency of information for anti-corruption and to increase the power of investigation,” said Torplus Yomnak, founder of Hands Social Enterprise.

He was speaking at a seminar last week organised by Thailand Institute of Justice on “Blockchain technology for transparency and accountability”.

Torplus, who is a researcher on corruption, suggested that modern technology could be applied in three areas. First, blockchain can be used for government procurement with strong investigation by citizens.

Torplus Yomnak, founder of Hands Social Enterprise

By doing this, Torplus said, blockchain could be used to manage related information such as procurement and auction-bidding in the server of Comptroller-General’s Department in order to allow associate networks to get access to the information.

Blockchain would help facilitate the investigation of concerned agencies and enhance transparency of the government’s procurement process, he pointed out.

Second, the use of blockchain to promote good governance in the private sector.

The technology will help the public check the history and the background of a company in order to know its relation with others as well as to consider if there were any risks or credibility issues with the company, he explained.

Lastly, it can be used for electronic assets declaration of civil servants and state officers to avoid conflict of interest and non-transparent investigation process.

Using blockchain would prevent any errors that could happen when filing papers as well as the erasing of information, he said.

Moreover, it would be easier to search for assets and have various ways to investigate the declared assets.

For example, it would be able to investigate the changes in the assets over a period of time, or it can analyse if there is any conflict of interest and can check if the assets are in accordance with or reasonable with the owner’s lifestyle.

“Technology can fight against corruption but to achieve this the public needs to be alerted in following the investigation and supporting scrutiny that is free from influence,” Torplus said.

Blockchain is also able to solve the human trafficking issue and the non-transparent processes in the fishing industry, the seminar was told.

Patipat Susumpao, co-founder of Open Dream, a digital-led social enterprise, said his organisation was trying to create a prototype applying blockchain for the fishery industry by tracking the origin of fishes – from where they were caught until they were served on the table.

He said Thailand is the world’s leading exporter of canned tuna products but environmental activists said the production process and supply chain in the fishing industry still has problems in terms of transparency.

Patipat gave an example of British company Provenance’s pilot project in Indonesia. The British firm uses mobile, blockchain technology and smart tagging to track fish caught by fishermen with verified social sustainability claims. The goal is to stop many of the troubling practices within the illegal fishing industry, including slavery.

“Blockchain could help solve this issue as consumers can track where and what they are eating is coming from,” he added.

Moreover, the technology could also be used to identify the identity of labour in order to prevent human trafficking and child labour in the industry.

Varying advantages

The advantage of blockchain technology is how it stores the digital information by utilising computer networks that connect a huge number of computers to store and verify data.

The transactions recorded with blockchain will be safely stored with utmost transparency and will be difficult to duplicate or counterfeit.

Though they agreed in general that blockchain was not a universal remedy, participants said there were many benefits to establish the mechanics and a culture of transparency at both the individual and organisational level if it were used appropriately.

Because of its ability to act as a decentralised ledger, as a record of any type of transaction that needs a consensus or permission to enter and edit data on the blockchain database, industries from finance to healthcare are adopting it for varying uses.

The discussion raised several study cases from many countries and governments around the world which are going digital, embracing blockchain technology to improve their bureaucracies and resolve issues on civil rights and public interests.

Estonia uses blockchain to manage the information of identity card and the whole system of the civil rights.

South Korea has heavily invested in blockchain technology to promote investigation of their elections.

The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees uses blockchain to store information on immigrants and also the mechanics of the digital money so the immigrants can use money in everyday life and for food.

In the private sector, the diamond industry uses blockchain to record and verify the source of the diamonds at every single step to end the trade in “Blood Diamonds”.

In addition, the justice system has kickstarted the development of an application that utilises blockchain to store digitalised evidence in order to reduce exposure to counterfeits and enhance user-friendliness and further develop the use of artificial intelligence in the future.

QueQ takes a different LINE

THE startup wants to expand beyond BUSTING restaurant queues IN REVENUE MODEL SHIFT

As it seeks to achieve “unicorn” status, the three-year-old start-up QueQ is looking to transform itself from an app to a platform and to reach beyond being a queuing solution. This would see it ultimately shift its revenue model from that of monthly app payments to a transaction base.

In November, the company will have its first series-A fundraising, led by a Thai telecom player and following an injection of venture capital from South Korea.  The move is to drive QueQ to expand its business footprint to cover five countries in the Asia Pacific region, including current markets Thailand, Malaysia and Taiwan. The next two are likely to involve India, South Korea or Japan, said Rungsun Promprasith, founder of QueQ.

“This series-A funding will increase the company’s valuation by up to US$10 million (Bt330 million). Our goal is to become the unicorn start-up from Thailand,” said Rungsun. Though Thailand has a healthy start-up culture, none has yet broken through to unicorn status.

QueQ was initially developed and designed as a queuing solution to address the pain point of time spent standing in line for a restaurant seat. The ultimate iteration of QueQ is as a lifestyle app that appeals to people who want to address a pain point involving wasted time for daily activities.

“It is not only designed to solve a queuing problem, but to solve any kinds of time-wasting problems in people daily life. Once they have a problem like this, they will think of QueQ,” said Rungsun. “We want to be people’s every-day app, and a location-based app, that can create new businesses.”

Since its launch three years ago, QueQ has grown to more than 1 million users. He said the series-A funding would help QueQ speed its growth to above 5 million users in the next 12 months.  QueQ will also change from an app to an online-to-offline platform offering any kind of service, such as deliveries and cashless payments, which could help solve people’s problem of allocating time for their daily activities.

“Being a platform would help QueQ to create revenues from a massive number of users and to help pave the way to being a unicorn. For example, once QueQ platform can turn offline payment into cashless payment via QueQ, potentially huge revenues would come from transactions. To achieve this scenario, it would need to educate the market and change people’s behaviour, all things that are on the way,” said Rungsun.

Initially, QueQ’s business model is to gain revenue from corporates who pay for the queuing solution. But QueQ aims to turn its future massive users into direct revenue sources. Series-A is intended to open a new chapter for QueQ, to develop and provide new features and new services. To do that it would acquire a lot more users and businesses who need QueQ’s solutions. It would expand both the regional market and expand to additional vertical local market segments.

Take for example the new features: “pre-order” and “the next-door-delivery” service. It was developed in a collaboration between QueQ and Chulalongkorn University, and allows QueQ users to pre-order food from local restaurants in the Sam Yan area, and have them delivered by students. So far 30 restaurants have joined a one-month trail, and the service will officially launch in November.

Chulalongkorn University students do the delivery, and some 20,000 students have joined the platform. “We call them ‘day-workers’ who would like to do a part-time job,” said Rungsun. The first new service is called DayWork, which grew out of the next-door-delivery service. DayWork is also a new start-up with a 30-per cent investment by QueQ, and 70-per cent from its founders. DayWork will soft launch along with the next-door-delivery service. It is designed as a part-time job platform that matches job to workers, mostly students.

“DayWork is to serve the huge massive part-time job market in Thailand,” said Rungsun. “It is to help students to do work in their free time. First, DayWork will start with food delivery next month. Then in early 2019, it will increase to more kinds of hiring (of part-time workers).”

QueQ evangelist Prairwa Kalayanamit, 17, said that most users are female and new features and services, especially DayWork, are designed to serve the new generation.

Later, with series-B fundraising, QueQ will aim to monetise its by-then massive number of users, at over 5 million, with a 30 per cent increase per month in active users.

Facebook launched its partner Gaming Creator Programme in Thailand six months ago, and has since recorded progress and growth from the Thai creator community as well as from creators across Southeast Asia.

Several of the tech giant’s Thai creators are already seeing encouraging results from the first few months of streaming on Facebook. For example, PJY Gamer, one of the first creators to join the gaming creator programme in Thailand, has been entertaining fans in Thailand playing RoV. Since joining the programme, PJY Gamer has grown followers by tenfold to 473,000.

Other partners include Roger Films Studio and NooEve PUBG. Six months into the programme, Roger now has a community of 120,000 followers, and livestreams of “The Sims” have an average of 4,000 concurrent views.

NooEve has built a dedicated following streaming PUBG Mobile. She has increased her following by six times to 76,000 since she joined the programme just over a month ago.

Facebook is continuing to introduce new tools based on creators’ feedback by working with the creators to test and roll out new features.

This includes the Level Up Programme for aspiring gaming creators  to start growing their streaming communities on Facebook, as well as on Facebook Stars. The latter is a feature that allows viewers to support their favourite gaming creators by sending stars and a thoughtful message while watching live gaming streams.

The Gaming Creator Programme, and the Level Up Programme, will support creators in Thailand by helping shape the experience for streaming on Facebook.

From October 26-28, the Thailand Game Show will include the most talked-about titles across the gaming spectrum, plus e-sports tournaments, concerts, and other events.
