District in Loei woos tourists with colourful ‘Christmas Festival’
TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 22, 2022
Phu Ruea district in Loei province is organising a “Christmas Festival” for over two months with the aim of stimulating the economy by welcoming tourists in the high season.
A press conference to announce Phu Ruea Christmas Festival was held on Monday night at the Phu Ruea National Park.
The district mayor, Phumarin Kongpientham, said the festival will be held from November 25, 2022, to January 31, 2023.
The opening ceremony is scheduled to be held from Friday to Saturday to promote tourism and Phu Ruea’s plants and flowers including the Christmas tree.
Beautiful lighting and a lot of red and pink flowers will be used to decorate the Christmas square for tourists to take photos.
She said people can take a commemorative photo in the district, which would stimulate the economy and generate revenue for operators of hotels, accommodations, souvenir stores, and tourist destinations.
Phumarin said that the district was called the “city of the sea of mountains, with beautiful flowers in three seasons”, and it is one of the coldest places in Thailand. Many people worked in flower farming instead of ordinary agriculture, making it the biggest winter flower seller in Thailand.
Nearly every weekend Nan’s Road No 3 is crowded with tourists enjoying the beautiful vista of lush hills, blue skies and white clouds.
The road, originally called Highway 1081, connects Santi Suk and Bo Kluea districts of the northern province. The road has been nicknamed Road No 3 because its turns make it look like the number three.
A visitor from Uttaradit said this was their first trip to Nan and the road offered a great landscape and background for photography.
A local said tourists usually show up between 11am and 2pm, and the area is normally crowded at the weekends.
Ghosts ready to pounce as Khao San woos visitors with ‘ghoulish’ 2022 Halloween
TUESDAY, OCTOBER 25, 2022
Every nightmare will come alive in Bangkok’s Khao San area as local businesses “employ” both Thai and foreign ghosts to woo tourists on Halloween night.
The Khao San Business Association announced on Tuesday that it hopes the “spooky” Khao San Halloween 2022 next Monday will see the area bustling with tourists again.
Sanga Ruangwattanakul, president of the association, said the Halloween costume contest should make the event even more fun and colourful. Up for grabs will be cash prizes of 10,000, 6,000 and 4,000 baht for the three scariest costumes and 1,000 baht each for five “not-so-scary” ghosts.
The organisers will start accepting applications from 6pm after celebrations kick off at 5pm, Sanga added.
“Visitors can enjoy not just the fun costumes paraded by the contestants but should also be prepared for both Thai and foreign ‘ghosts’ waiting to jump at them from every corner of the road,” he said.
Sanga added that many restaurants and bars are also creating “especially scary” selfie spots, such as the “Dark Knight City” by Buddy Beer bar, the “Bloody Mary Graveyard” by the One Shop, “K-Pop Halloween” by Mun-se shop and “Caper Ghost” by The Club.
Chiang Mai tourists get high as Mon Mak mountain mists roll in for winter
MONDAY, NOVEMBER 07, 2022
Hundreds of tourists climbed Doi Mon Mak mountain in Chiang Mai’s Mae Chaem early on Sunday to witness the natural wonder that cloaks the forests of this northern district every cold season.
Crowds gathered at the summit of the 1,100-metre peak to watch the sunrise break through a sea of fog on the horizon. The panoramic view also revealed the iconic Doi Inthanon, Thailand’s tallest mountain, soaring 2,565 metres high.
Doi Mon Mak is in Tha Pha subdistrict, about 120 kilometres from downtown Chiang Mai. It was opened for tourists in 2019 as a new viewpoint in the northern province, offering unobstructed 360-degree views of the sea of fog, and has become increasingly popular despite the pandemic.
Last year Doi Mon Mak opened a campsite so visitors could spend the night and witness the sunrise early next day. The campsite, which is about 300 metres from the viewpoint, also features rental cabins.
Doi Mon Mak expects to see more visitors over the coming months, as Thais like the cool New Year temperatures and the Covid-19 situation is improving, said Mae Chaem district chief Phatthanan Phithakham.
Hotels and resorts in Mae Chaem have opened for the upcoming high season after being closed for more than two years during the pandemic, she said.
The district is also planning to build and upgrade tourism facilities at Doi Mon Mak, including roads leading to nature treks, car parks and campsite expansion to attract visitors all year round.
What you need to know about Chiang Mai’s magnificent Yi Peng Lantern Fest
THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 03, 2022
Several tourist spots in Chiang Mai city have been spruced up and decorated with colourful Lanna-style lanterns to welcome Thai and foreign visitors for its famous “Yi Peng Lantern Festival” this year.
Yi Peng is a Lanna-style Loy Krathong Festival.
The word “yi’ means two while “peng” means full moon day, so the festival is held during a full moon in the second Lanna month, which is the 12th month of the Thai Lunar calendar.
Three days of Yi Peng
The 13th day of the waxing moon – buying things to make merit at temples
14th day – making merit at temples, floating large krathongs with food for poor people
15th day – floating krathongs at ponds/canals in temples, paying homage to a relic of the Buddha’s footprint.
Apart from lanterns on display, several spots are decorated with big krathongs to welcome tourists. The lanterns shine brightly at night and provide a good selfie or photo opportunity for Thais and foreign tourists alike.
This year, the festival will be held on Saturday. The old city area and the road in front of the Chiang Mai City Municipality Office will be decked with beautiful Lanny-style lanterns of all hues and sizes.
On Monday, an opening prayer ceremony will be held at the shrine and white pagoda in front of Chiang Mai City Municipality. There will also be a ceremony at Sri Khong pier in which people “apologise” to the Ping River.
In the evening, a ceremony launching the Yi Peng festival will commence with several exciting activities, including a Lanna-style lantern competition and contests to crown a Mister and a Miss Yi Peng.
On Tuesday, Loy Krathong Day, a Tang Tham Luang ceremony will be held, in which Buddhists gather to listen to a grand sermon on the last life of the Bodhisattva at Wat Si Don Chai.
A krathong competition, with colourful floats made from banana leaves and flowers, will also sail ahead, along with the Yi Peng kid contest.
Meanwhile, a Lanna-style lantern parade competition will take to the road from a square at Tha Phae Gate to the Chiang Mai City Municipality Office.
Wednesday will see a luk thung singing contest featuring dancers at the office.
In the evening, a krathong parade competition gets underway, with an award for the biggest and most attractive public float being presented at night.

THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 03, 2022
Are you planning to visit beautiful Chiang Mai? There are five main popular tourist destinations waiting for you to discover – or revisit – amid a high season that ranges from cool to outright cold.
According to the Tourism and Sports Ministry, Chiang Mai was the sixth most-visited province in Thailand for both Thais and foreigners in the first nine months of 2022. And now with the high season starting off with the province’s famous Loy Krathong celebrations, it is expected to attract a vastly higher number of tourists.
Check out these five charming tourist destinations you should not miss when visiting the province:
Wat Phra That Doi Suthep
Now this is a highly recommended tourist destination for those who love culture and religious aspects. Considered the most important in Chiang Mai, the temple was built in the early 19th Buddhist century.
It is located atop Doi Suthep mountain on the western side of Chiang Mai city.
Visitors can park their vehicles at the base and jump on a tram to reach the pagodas. Or the more adventurous can walk up the seven-headed serpent stairs.
You can expect sweeping views of Chiang Mai, besides seeing close-up the Chiang Saen-style golden pagoda and exquisite Lanna architecture.
The temple is open from 6am to 6pm. Entrance tickets are priced at 20 baht for Thais and 50 baht for foreigners.
Doi Inthanon National Park
This park is an absolutely great spot for nature lovers as it offers amazing views of sometimes misty surroundings and luxuriant forests.
Approximately 60 kilometres from Chiang Mai, tourists can reach the park by car or public transport such as songthaews.
Doi Inthanon National Park spans an area of 482 square kilometres. It is located on Doi Inthanon, Thailand’s highest mountain at 2,565 metres above sea level.
With this height, visitors can expect cold weather throughout the year and easily zero degree Celsius or minus temperatures at the year-end. Tourists can catch the frequent fog and “frost flowers” – “Mae Kha Ning” – early in the morning.
Besides this, travellers can visit several waterfalls in the area, take a peaceful walk along a beautiful nature trail, or go bird watching.
Furthermore, the mountain is a stargazer’s paradise, where you can behold the wondrous sight of thousands of stars from the Thai National Observatory.
Entry fees are 30 baht for Thai children and 60 baht for adults, 150 baht for foreign children and 300 baht for adults.
Mon Jam
If you love nature you will love Mon Jam – a mountain tourist hotspot where you can take in a sea of fog.
It is located in Mae Rim district and is part of the Nong Hoi Royal Project. It takes around an hour to drive to Mon Cham.
Meanwhile those who love camping can stay the night at Mon Jam Camping Resort, which provides tents and personal restrooms.
Apart from this, splendid Mon Jam offers a variety of activities: you can try step farming, visit cafes and restaurants and shop for handmade souvenirs.
Night Bazaar
Chiang Mai is rich in markets and includes one for every kind of shopper, including Warorot Market or Tha Pae Walking Street.
The Night Bazaar is located on the east side of the old walled city and stretches approximately 1km on Chang Khlan Road.
Some stores open from 6pm but the the market comes fully alive from 7pm. Stores start packing up for the night at around 10.30pm.
Here shoppers will find an array of fascinating products, from designer goods, clothing and shoes to gadgets, jewellery and local products – many at very low prices.
However, beware: some brand-name designer goods might be fake, so keep this in mind when shopping for these products. And if your stomach is rumbling, there’s a large scrumptious selection of street food and beverages.
Nimman Road
If you are young at heart or a hip traveller looking for somewhere “Instagrammable”, look no further than Nimman Road.
It is not difficult to reach Nimman in Mueang Chiang Mai district. You can either drive there or hail public transport.
The area is a lively commercial district with several fashionable restaurants and cafes to explore – attractive spots for clicking photos or selfies and posting them on social media.
And if nighttime entertainment is your cup of tea, the road offers different types of music – from dance to chill or for relaxing.
These are but a few simple recommendations from us. Undoubtedly, there are more tourist destinations for you to discover when visiting alluring Chiang Mai this high season.
So get your holiday gear together and head over to this province. You won’t be disappointed. Happy journey!
