HOSTS THAILAND clawed back from 2-1 behind to beat arch-rivals Indonesia 3-2 to reach the Uber Cup semi-finals for only the second time at the Impact Arena Muang Thong Thani yesterday.

The Thai team, whose best run in the tournament was a semi-final spot in 2012, fought back from two defeats in the doubles and singles rubbers to win the second doubles and third singles in front of 2,000 cheering fans at the arena.

World No 4 Ratchanok Intanon got Thailand off to a great start, using her superior all-court game to tame the 39th-ranked Fitriani Fitriani 39 21-8 21-7 in just 33 minutes.

Ratchanok Intanon

“Seeing so many fans coming out to support us really helped ease the pressure. Being drawn against Indonesia wasn’t what we wanted so we had no choice but to fight hard,” she said.

Indonesia hit back in the first women’s doubles match as world No 6 Greysia Polii and Apriyani Rahayu cemented their supremacy over world No 8 Jongkolphan Kititharakul and Rawinda Prajongjai 21-18 21-16 for a fourth straight win over the Thais.

Former world junior champion Gregoria Mariska Tunjung boosted Indonesia to 2-1 when she upset world No 11 Nitchaon Jindapol 21-10 22-20. It was sweet revenge for the 18-year-old, who lost in straight games to Nitchaon in January’s Thailand Masters.

Sapsiree and Puttita

However, Puttita Supajirakul and Sapsiree Taerattanachai produced a spectacular performance to upset world No 11 Della Destiara Haris and Rizki Amelia Pradipta 22-20 21-12 and keep Thai hopes alive at 2-2.

Busanan Ongbamrungphan turned team heroine when she won the decisive rubber against the Ruselli Hartawan 21-9 21- 12.

“I’m so overwhelmed to win this crucial point for Thailand. There was so much pressure out there but I tried really hard to focus,” said Busanan.

“Once in a life time I got to play the Uber Cup in my home country, I feel really proud,” added Busanan.

Thailand will play defending champs China, who beat Denmark 3-1. “It will be tough against China but there’s nothing to lose,” said Busanan.

Ratchanok said: “I’m looking forward to play Chinese No 1 Chen Yufei and wish to have a revenge.” Ratchanon carries a poor 0-4 record with the Chinese.

Elsewhere, third seeds South Korea beat Canada 3-1 and will play top seeds Japan who beat Taiwan (3-1).

Jazz and Carballo share clubhouse lead at Betagro Championship

Nakhon Pathom –   Thailand’s Jazz Janewattananond and Argentina’s Miguel Carballo shared the first-round clubhouse lead on seven-under-par 65 at the weather-hit Betagro Championship on Thursday.

The in-form Argentinian mixed his card with one eagle, six birdies and one bogey to move atop the predominantly Thai dominated leaderboard at the Suwan Golf and Country Club.

Finland’s Janne Kaske, was the only other international player in the top-10, along with ADT winners Nattawat Suvajanakorn and Chanachok Dejpiratanamongkol. They were among nine players tied in third place at the Bt3,000,000 (approx. US$96,000) Asian Development Tour (ADT) event.

Thailand’s Sorachut Hansapiban stole the spotlight when he aced the 12th hole with a seven-iron from 155 yards.

Round one was suspended due to lightning threats at 10.40am local time but resumed at 12.15pm local time. The delay led to the suspension of play at 6.35pm due to fading light with a total of 21 players returning to complete their rounds tomorrow.

Jazz, who missed only one fairway, traded eight birdies against a lone bogey after misjudging the direction of the wind which pushed his approach shot to the greenside bunker on the fourth hole.

“I thought it was headwind when I was standing over the ball so I clubbed up on my approach, but the wind was actually right-to-left so I ended up missing the green and missed my up-and-down for par. The wind was tricky today but I still played really well,” said the 22-year-old Jazz.

“Hole 14 was the highlight of my round when I hit a bad drive that landed in the trees. But I hit a huge cut with my 3-wood that landed just 10-feet from the hole. I played a lot of different shots today because I was confident in my swing and I knew I could be aggressive,” added the Asian Tour winner.

The 39-year-old Carballo, who has had four top-10 finishes on the ADT and finished tied-fifth in his second start on the Asian Tour last week, credited his low round to a solid iron game which led to only two missed greens in regulation.

“I am hitting my driver and irons very well this week. The course isn’t too long for me so I took out my driver whenever I could and I only had to hit shorter irons into the greens to give myself birdie chances,” said Carballo who negotiated his way around the greens in 26 putts.

“My game has been pretty solid this season other than when I missed the cut in Bangladesh in my first start on the Asian Tour. I worked on my short game that weekend and did well in China the week after. The course is beautiful, it is my second time back in Thailand since (Asian Tour) Qualifying School. I am just enjoying my game and that’s why I played well,” added the Argentinian.

The Betagro Championship is the ninth leg on the ADT 2018 schedule and is jointly sanctioned by the All Thailand Golf Tour and the ADT. Official World Golf Ranking (OWGR) points are offered on all ADT events with the winner earning a total of six OWGR points while the top-six players and ties earn points on a sliding scale.

The leading five players on the ADT Order of Merit at the end of the season will earn playing rights on the Asian Tour for the 2019 season.

Ends.

Nakhon Pathom –  Singapore’s Johnson Poh will be looking to rediscover his winning form with a new set of golf clubs at the Betagro Championship, which gets underway on Thursday.

The 26-year-old Singaporean claimed his maiden Asian Development Tour (ADT) title in Malaysia last month and became only the third Singaporean to win on the region’s secondary circuit, which was inaugurated as a gateway to the premier Asian Tour in 2010.

After taking a two-week break for his mandatory military service back home after his breakthrough win, Poh hopes to regain his momentum when he tees off for the ฿3,000,000 (approx. US$96,000) ADT event at the Suwan Golf and Country Club.

Poh, who sits in second place on the ADT Order of Merit, will be part of the elite XX-man field vying for honours at the popular event, which is celebrating its second consecutive edition on the ADT this week.

Defending champion Tirawat Kaewsiribandit will spearhead the local charge alongside reigning Order of Merit winner Pannakorn Uthaipas and current Merit leader Nitithorn Thippong, who has enjoyed one win and four top-10 finishes prior to his campaign this week.

In-form Miguel Carballo of Argentina, Thailand’s Itthipat Buranatanyarat and Oscar Zetterwall of Sweden, placed third, fourth and fifth respectively on the Order of Merit, will also feature in the Betagro Championship, which is the Tour’s second stop in Thailand this season.

Poh, who has been struggling with his driver recently, hopes an equipment change will put his game back on track as he targets a good showing in Thailand.

“I lost my touch a little after that two-week break and it has been a grind to get back on track. I was playing alright in the Asian Tour event in Bangladesh two weeks ago but the long rain delays and strong winds kind of threw me off my game,” said Poh, a double silver-medalist at the Southeast Asian Games in 2009 and 2015.

“I have been working hard on my game last week and I changed a new set of clubs. I have a new driver in the bag now so we will see how it works out. It is my first time playing this course and there are quite a lot of hazards out there. I am driving the ball well now which is the key this week.

“My goal now is to win the ADT Order of Merit and earn my Asian Tour card for next year. I have always loved playing in Thailand. The course is beautiful this week and competition is stiff but I am excited for the challenge,” Poh added.

Other notable names in the field include Thailand’s Danthai Boonma and Natipong Srithong, India’s Himmat Rai and Marcus Both of Australia, all winners on the region’s premier Tour.

The Betagro Championship is the ninth leg on the ADT 2018 schedule and will be jointly sanctioned by the All Thailand Golf Tour and the ADT.

THE NATION

THAILAND’S Thomas Cup team signed off with a 5-0 demolition of Canada in the final tie of Group B at Impact Arena yesterday, as group-topping Indonesia and South Korea advanced to today’s knock-out stage.

The Thai men’s squad salvaged some pride after two straight defeats to South Korea and Indonesia had seen their hopes of a quarter-final berth evaporate on Tuesday night.

Yesterday’s win meant the hosts finished third in the group with one victory against two defeats, while winless Canada sank to the bottom. Last year’s runners-up Indonesia and South Korea were to meet last night but had already qualified.

“At least we didn’t finish bottom,” said Thai No 1 player Khosit Phetpradab. “We would love to stay longer in the tournament but South Korea and Indonesia are world class teams. We gave everything,” added the Thai world No 26 after his 21-15 21-16 win over Jason Anthony Ho-Shue of Canada.

With the exit of the men, Thailand’s hopes rest with the women’s Uber Cup team, which had already secured a quarter-final spot along with Taiwan as the two met head to head in Group B last night.

In Group A, Japan’s women dominated with three wins while Canada were second with two wins as both reserved spots in today’s last eight.

South Korea (three wins) and Denmark (two wins) qualify from Group C while China and Indonesia with three and two wins respectively in Group D also advanced.

On the men’s side, China and France topped Group A. Japan and Taiwan dominated Group C while defending champions Denmark and Malaysia progressed from Group D.

‘Obsessive’ Emery ready for Arsenal challenge

‘Obsessive’ Emery ready for Arsenal challenge

sports May 23, 2018 16:13

Emery spends up to 12 hours preparing video analysis for his players and former Valencia winger Joaquin once quipped: “There were so many videos I ran out of popcorn.

London – Fuelled by video nasties and sleepless nights, Unai Emery is ready for the challenge of succeeding Arsene Wenger after being appointed as Arsenal’s first new boss for 22 years.

Arsenal have made a habit of appointing managers out of left-field — Bertie Mee was a former physiotherapist, former Arsenal star George Graham came from second-tier Millwall and Wenger was greeted with “Arsene Who?” headlines following his move from Japan’s Nagoya Grampus 8 in 1996.

Emery is seen by some as another surprise choice after the Gunners reportedly initially favoured Manchester City assistant coach Mikel Arteta.

But Emery, a 46-year-old Spaniard, arrives with grand credentials following his two-year stay with Paris Saint Germain and a Europa League-winning spell at Sevilla.

Emery left Paris at the end of this season having won the domestic treble.

Now he is tasked with raising standards at the Emirates Stadium and restoring Arsenal to the kind of glory they enjoyed in the early years of Wenger’s reign.

Emery already has one thing in common with Wenger after making clear his disdain for the Frenchman’s old rival Jose Mourinho.

When Manchester United boss Mourinho, then in charge of Real Madrid, devoted a press conference to criticising referee Carlos Clos Gomez in 2010, Emery gave an acerbic retort, snarling: “Mourinho’s stance is that of a cry baby”.

It was a jibe typical of the intense Emery, who was steeped in football from birth, with his father and grandfather both former players.

Emery had a modest playing career, largely spent in Spain’s lower leagues, but he was an instant hit in his managerial debut with third-tier Lorca.

He achieved promotion and then moved to Almeria, who he took up to La Liga for the first time before taking over at Valencia, where he guided the team into the Champions League with three consecutive top-three finishes.

Valencia’s vibrant style earned him the admiration and friendship of Pep Guardiola.

Emery moved to Sevilla where he won three consecutive Europa League trophies in 2014, 2015 and 2016.

Emery has earned a reputation as one of Europe’s most studious coaches, working until the early hours of the morning crafting his game-plans.

 – Perfectionist –

He spends up to 12 hours preparing video analysis for his players and former Valencia winger Joaquin once quipped: “There were so many videos I ran out of popcorn.

“He’s obsessed with football, it’s practically an illness. He’s one of the best managers I’ve had.”

Emery is a perfectionist who demands relentless effort on the training ground.

“Either we all work or let’s just burst the ball,” he said, giving voice to an approach that might shake Arsenal out of the complacency that mared the end of the Wenger era.

Significantly, Emery has flourished within a structure similar to the one now in place at Arsenal, who lean heavily on head of recruitment Sven Mislintat and head of football operations Raul Sanllehi, both recruited last November.

At Sevilla, Emery worked well with recruitment director Monchi and Arsenal are gambling the same structure pays dividends for them.

The main worry for Arsenal fans might be Emery’s ill-fated spell with Spartak Moscow in 2012 and his failure to fulfil his mandate at Paris Saint-Germain, where he was asked to win the Champions League after moving to the big-spending French giants in 2016.

Emery was let go by PSG with one year left on his contract and the roots of demise lay in two painful Champions League exits and a troubled relationship with star striker Neymar.

In 2017, a woeful 6-1 loss in Barcelona saw PSG surrender a 4-0 first leg lead in an incredible last-16 meltdown.

On the heels of that collapse, this season’s capitulation against Real Madrid in the last-16 ensured Emery’s time in Paris would be short-lived.

Wenger’s travails in recent years mean Emery will not have to worry about the Champions League in the coming season but Arsenal can rest assured their ultra-driven boss will be working all hours to get them back there.//AFP

Tirawat gears up for for title defence in Betagro Championship

Nakorn Pathom – Thailand’s Tirawat Kaewsiribandit will be eyeing for a successful title defence at the popular Betagro Championship which gets underway at the Suwan Golf and Country Club on Thursday.

The 28-year-old Tirawat, who turned professional in 2010, had battled through a back injury to lift his first Asian Development Tour (ADT) title with a three-shot victory last year, albeit on a different course.

His breakthrough win spurred him to four top-10 finishes on the Asian Tour where he finished on a career-high 36th place on the 2017 Order of Merit, thereby retaining his playing rights on the region’s premier Tour for the 2018 season.

Despite making only one cut in seven starts on the Asian Tour so far this season, the lanky Thai is hopeful of turning his season around with a repeat victory at the ฿3,000,000 (approx. US$96,000) event, which is the ADT’s second stop in Thailand this year.

“My game has definitely improved a lot after winning on the ADT last year. It was a great boost to my confidence. I remember I couldn’t even rotate my hips through my swing at one point last year because of the back injury and I had to take a break from golf for a month,” said Tirawat.

“I have been taking care of my body since the injury and doing a lot of stretching which helps. It’s so important to be mindful of your body especially after you have recovered from an injury.

“I am just grateful that I can play 18 holes without feeling any pain now and I am happy to be playing golf without having to think so much,” he added.

Tirawat will lead a strong Thai contingent which includes reigning ADT Order of Merit champion Pannakorn Uthaipas, newly-crowned ADT winners Varanyu Rattanaphiboonkij and Nitithorn Thippong, in the event, jointly sanctioned by the All Thailand Golf Tour and the ADT.

Singapore’s Johnson Poh, Argentinean Miguel Carballo and Sweden’s Oscar Zetterwall placed second, third and fifth and respectively on the ADT Order of Merit, will also feature in the talented 144-man field, which consists of 60 players from the ADT, 64 players from the All Thailand Golf Tour and 20 players from the Qualifier.

Other notable names include Australian duo Marcus Both and Adam Blyth and India’s Himmat Rai, all winners on the Asian Tour.

The Betagro Championship is the ninth leg on the ADT’s 2018 schedule. All ADT events are afforded Official World Golf Ranking (OWGR) status. The winner of each tournament receives a minimum of six OWGR points while the top-six players and ties earn points on a sliding scale.

The leading five players on the ADT Order of Merit at the end of the season will earn playing rights on the premier Asian Tour for the 2019 season.

McIlroy seeks to regain sparkle at puzzling PGA

sports May 23, 2018 07:28

By AFP

Wentworth – Rory McIlroy admits to having a weird relationship with the Wentworth course but he will be hoping after a chastening experience at the Masters to rediscover a bit of his old sparkle at the PGA Championship.

The 29-year-old quadruple major champion, who looked well placed going into the final round to win an elusive Masters before his challenge fizzled out, makes his first appearance on European soil this year in a bid to win the prestigious title he claimed in 2014.

McIlroy is the major drawcard in a field that includes defending champion Alex Noren of Sweden and last year’s Race to Dubai winner Tommy Fleetwood.

“I’ve had a weird relationship with Wentworth,” said McIlroy in April.

“I had the win there back in 2014 but I haven’t really done much else.

“I think I had a top five back in 2009 but it’s been a place of high frustration for me so I’m looking forward to going back and trying to solve the puzzle again.

“At least I do have good memories there.”

The former world number one, who started the European Tour season with top three finishes in Abu Dhabi and Dubai, is encouraged that his relationship with the course could be due a change because it has undergone a revamp since he last played it.

“I haven’t played there in a couple of years (he had a rib injury last year) but from what I’ve seen, with the new grass that they’ve put in, it looks a much better golf course, a much more playable golf course,” said McIlroy.

“It was always a great golf course but sometimes it could get very tricky with some of the lies you could get.

“For them to re-grass the place and for it to look as good as it does is great, and I’m looking forward to playing it.”

– ‘Unreal to defend it’ –

McIlroy carded a sublime 66 in his final round to win in 2014 — an annus mirabilis for him as he went on to win two majors, the British Open and the US PGA — but Noren bettered that in some style last year with an incredible round of 62 after beginning the day seven strokes off the lead.

Noren, who will tee off with McIlroy and veteran Lee Westwood, admitted he also had his issues with the course prior to his victory.

“It’s by far the biggest tournament I’ve won, and it would be unreal to defend it,” said Noren.

“I think it was a shock to me to win it.

“I played it ten times before last year and I always thought the golf course was not up my alley.

“I made it, in my head, a bigger tournament than it maybe is — it’s already huge and then I made it feel even bigger.

“I’ve watched the tournament since I was little, and then you get to play it, then you make the cut for the first time, so it’s always been a big tournament in my head and it was amazing to win it.”

Winning the PGA would all but guarantee the winner a place in the European team for the Ryder Cup later this year but Fleetwood for his part says that it would be a mistake to allow that to enter one’s thoughts.

“The Ryder Cup, for any of us, is a dream,” said Fleetwood.

“I’m desperate to play in the Ryder Cup, but the more you think about it and the more you put too much pressure on yourself to make it; if I was to go out and start on Thursday with a couple of bogeys and you’re thinking about the Ryder Cup in September, it’s only going to add pressure.”
