Pedal to the metal as Hammer comes to Hong Kong

Cycling enthusiasts, book your tickets now! The Asian leg of the revolutionary international professional Hammer Series is coming to Hong Kong on October 14 as part of the annual Sun Hung Kai Properties Hong Kong Cyclothon.

The Hammer Series 2018, which kicked off in Stavanger, Norway in May and continued in Limburg, Netherlands in June, will have its finale at Hammer Hong Kong, a Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) Asia Tour Class 1.1 Road Race, with 11 UCI WorldTour teams (an unprecedented number) converging on Hong Kong’s shores, putting the international spotlight squarely on the city.

The Hammer Series is different from other professional races, as only a team can win, not an individual rider, and Hammer Hong Kong is designed to allow fans to see some of the world’s best teams take part in two races. The first race is the Hammer Sprint – a fast and furious race over a 4.3-km circuit in Tsim Sha Tsui, along the picturesque Victoria Harbour. The teams, consisting of five cyclists each, will compete head to head over 10 strenuous laps (43km in total). The other is the Hammer Chase that will set off in two separate groups, according to the points won in the sprint race. The “runner-up” and “finalist” groups will battle separately over five laps (21.5km in total) along the same course. The team in the “finalist” group whose fourth rider crosses the finish line first wins Hammer Hong Kong.

The team that accumulates the most points in total from Stavanger, Limburg and Hong Kong will be crowned Hammer Series 2018 champion.

“Every day the whole team is working towards winning the series, not just winning a stage,” said cyclist Caleb Ewan of team Mitchelton-SCOTT, explaining how the Hammer Series stands out from other international cycling competitions.

Graham Bartlett, chief executive of Velon, organiser of the Hammer Series, added, “We’re so excited to bring the Series finale of Hammer to Hong Kong. The teams will be racing all out to win the Series, and Hammer Hong Kong will be a fantastic place to crown the winning team.”

In addition to the professional Hammer Series, amateur cyclists from around the world can put their speed and endurance to the test by participating in the equally exciting 30km or 50km rides. Participants can cycle through the diverse cityscape against Hong Kong’s world-famous skyline, from Tsim Sha Tsui to Tsing Yi, Ma Wan and back to Tsim Sha Tsui. The 50-km riders will also streak through three tunnels and enjoy the fantastic view from three spectacular Hong Kong landmarks – Tsing Ma Bridge, Ting Kau Bridge and Stonecutters Bridge. This ride is a “must-do” for cycling lovers and professionals alike.

The 30km and 50km rides are open to all passionate cyclists and online registration can be made at register.hongkongcyclothon.com.

Cat snap: Tokyo ‘lucky cat’ temple draws Instagrammers

Tokyo’s Gotokuji temple has long attracted spiritual visitors with its thousands of figurines of beckoning white cats, thought to bring good luck. But of late it has brought in another breed: Instagrammers.

Around 10,000 figurines of white cats seated with one paw raised are stacked and strewn around the temple, providing tempting fodder for social media mavens from Japan and abroad.

“I actually Googled ‘Instagram spots Tokyo’,” said Emily Lin, a 25-year-old tourist from Hong Kong.

“This was named one of the most ‘Instagrammable spots.'”

“These cats are like a symbol of luck in the Japanese culture,” she added, looking for for new angles to capture the copious cats.

Ying-Chi Hsueh, 31, a photography student from Taiwan, also said he had been drawn to the temple by the photogenic felines.

“I saw a picture on Instagram and I came here using Google Maps,” he said.

They were among dozens of visitors there the week before Wednesday’s International Cat Day, snapping shots of the temple’s “maneki-neko” or “beckoning cat” figurines.

Temple lore says the popularity of the figures was inspired by an event at Gotokuji in the 15th century.

The priest at the time kept a cat called Tama, which according to legend one day strolled out of the temple and raised its right paw to beckon a powerful samurai lord inside — moments before a thunderstorm stuck.

Impressed by the cat who had helped him escape the storm, the lord became a patron of the temple.

Tama the cat has been immortalised as a stylised white cat figure considered a symbol of good luck in Japan and across Asia, usually depicted sitting on his back legs with one paw raised.

The figurines are often spotted in businesses and some versions feature a paw that moves back and forth.

“The maneki-neko gives you the chance to appreciate what you have, the people you meet,” Gotokuji’s deputy priest Tessai Kasukawa told AFP.

“The feeling of appreciation will bring you good luck.”

And the feline figurines have certainly brought luck to the temple, which says it is seeing a growing number of visitors.

“Now with the Tokyo Olympics coming up (in 2020), we receive many international visitors. They spread the word about the temple, making this place globally famous,” Kasukawa said.

Beijing has issued a guideline for restaurant toilets, to improve sanitary conditions of the city’s 5,000 restaurants this year, Beijing Youth Daily reported Friday.

Released by the municipal food and drug administration Thursday, the guideline has more than 40 regulations on the environment, facilities, cleaning and disinfection.

Restaurant staff must check sanitary conditions every hour, and every 15 minutes at meal time. All toilets should be disinfected at least once a day, and other facilities such as faucets, sinks, handrails, hand dryers and air vents should be disinfected at least four times a day.

The guideline prohibits restaurants to use personalized toilet signs that are difficult to identify. Restaurant toilets should also have partitions, mirrors and disposable toilet seat covers.

“The guideline marks the beginning of a ‘toilet revolution’ in Beijing restaurants,” said Duan Zhiyong, an official with the administration.

In 2015, China launched a toilet revolution nationwide to make public toilets cleaner and more regulated. Chinese leaders called for continued efforts to upgrade the country’s toilets.

According to Duan, the guideline will be promoted in Beijing’s public food service sector, with 5,000 restaurants expected to improve their toilet environment and services by the end of the year.

Global survey outlines most annoying habits of travellers

Tourism August 08, 2018 01:00

By   THE NATION

WITH THE summer holiday season in full swing in Europe and America and another long holiday to celebrate Mother’s Day is just around the corner for Thai travellers, Agoda, one of the fastest growing online travel agents (OTA), has been asking travelers what they think are the most annoying travel habits.

Noisy travelers (57 per cent), travellers glued to their devices (47 per cent), and those insensitive to cultural nuances (46 per cent) topped the most annoying habits of fellow travelers according to Agoda’s global ‘Annoying Travel Habits’ survey. Mass tour groups and selfie-takers, cited by 36 per cent and 21 per cent respectively, completed the top five irritants.

The Agoda ‘Annoying Travel Habits’ research was conducted by independent market research firm YouGov between June 19th and 25th 2018. 10,384 respondents were interviewed online and are representative of those who have been on holiday at least once in the past year.

Within their countries: UK (1,418), US (597), Australia (837), Singapore (913), Malaysia (1,002), Philippines (1,011), Indonesia (1,063), Vietnam (999), Thailand (1,062) and China (1,482).

Chinese travelers seemingly have the highest tolerance for selfie-takers, with only 12 per cent of Chinese respondents irritated by selfie-takers compared to Australians who are on the other end of the tolerance spectrum with nearly a third (31 per cent) citing holiday selfie-takers as annoying.

Insensitivity to local culture nuances is more than twice as irritating for Singaporeans, (63 per cent) Filipinos (61 per cent) and Malaysians (60 per cent) as it is for Chinese (21 per cent) and Thai (27 per cent) Travelers.

About half of British (54 per cent) and two-fifths of American travelers (41 per cent) are intolerant of this habit.

Almost half (47 per cent) of the global respondents cited travelers spending too much time on their mobile devices as a grievance. Compared to travelers from other countries, the Vietnamese find those glued to their devices the most annoying (59 per cent).

Thai travellers, on the other hand, have the most relaxed attitude (31 per cent) towards constant device usage on holiday.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, solo travelers spend nearly two hours a day on their devices when on holiday (117 minutes) – which is 15 per cent more time than when they are traveling with friends (100 minutes) and 26 per cent more time than if they are with family (86 minutes).

Americans are the only exception to this trend and on average spend less time on their devices when traveling solo (62 minutes) than when they are with family (66 minutes) or friends (86 minutes).

Brits are the most engaged travelers when traveling together, limiting their screen time to just over an hour (63 minutes) a day; comparatively Thai travelers spend more than two hours a day (125 minutes) on the phone when they travel with friends or family.

Paris’ Lutetia hotel reopens after luxury makeover in the hopes it will achieve “palace” ranking

THE LUTETIA hotel in Paris, favoured by the likes of Picasso and Hemingway, reopens after four years of costly renovations that it hopes will win it the “palace” label reserved for the most opulent of French lodgings.

Steeped in history, from its occupation by Nazi intelligence agents to its years as a hangout for celebrity intellectuals in the 1950s, the Lutetia hasn’t changed much on the outside at least.

The new-look hotel in the chic Saint-Germain-des-Pres neighbourhood has retained its imposing art deco facade, lined with elegant wrought iron balconies overhung with carved stone grapevines.

But the 200-million-euro (Bt7.8 billion) makeover has allowed the hotel to spruce up its original frescos and stucco work, decking out the 184 rooms and suites in understated luxury.

Bartenders stand behind the bar of the newlyrefurbished Lutetia Hotel.

Hotel manager Jean-Luc Cousty says the goal was to “create a contemporary hotel by enhancing everything that was historic”.

“The Lutetia has not lost its soul, and one of the big triumphs of architect Jean-Michel Wilmotte is that natural light has been brought in throughout,” he explains.

The first guests were due to walk through its corridors – lined with dark eucalyptus wood – on Thursday.

There is a softly lit 17-metre swimming pool, while the rooms feature discreet art-deco chandeliers and a lot of white marble: the baths were carved out of a 1.9 tonne block.

While the brasserie will not reopen until autumn, guests can sip a cocktail in the Josephine bar, whose frescos, previously forgotten under layers of wallpaper and paint, have been restored after 17,000 hours of painstaking work.

Opened in 1910, the Lutetia owes its existence to its neighbour Bon Marche, one of the first department stores in the world.

Marguerite Boucicaut, its owner, had the hotel built to provide accommodation for her wealthy customers travelling up to Paris from the provinces for shopping trips.

Situated in the centre of the Left Bank, the heart of the French intellectual scene, it quickly became a hub of philosophical and artistic debate.

During the Nazi occupation of Paris, the hotel was requisitioned by German forces and used to host and entertain troops.

Upon the liberation, wartime leader General Charles de Gaulle – who himself had honeymooned at the Lutetia – ordered the hotel to take in thousands of refugees.

A book shelf in the diningroom of the newlyrefurbished Lutetia Hotel in Paris / AFP

Post-war it swiftly regained its reputation as a place to see and be seen, with artists like Pablo Picasso and Henri Matisse haunting its hallways.

James Joyce famously wrote part of “Ulysees” there – with the help of editing suggestions from Ernest Hemingway – and the dancer Josephine Baker was also a regular.

Currently a four-star hotel, the Lutetia has applied for a fifth – the next step before getting the “palace” label, which is currently held by 10 top Parisian hotels including the Bristol and Peninsula.

The Lutetia “offers something different, it wouldn’t do any harm to the other palaces because its clientele is different,” says Christian Mantei, head of national tourism development agency Atout France.

Cousty says the Lutetia attracted hardly any of the ultra-rich “Middle Eastern and Russian customers who prefer to stay in the ‘Golden Triangle’”, an area near the Champs-Elysees boulevard on the other side of the river.

While still out of reach for all but the wealthiest, he said is Lutetia was aiming for “more accessible” pricing than those rivals on the Right Bank, “with an average price of 800 euros”.

Bought in 2010 by Israeli group Alrov, the Lutetia is seeking to double its turnover – which stood at 30 million euros before the renovation works – within three or four years of reopening.

At least the timing is good: after two years during which Paris was scarred by terror attacks, tourists returned to the French capital in record numbers in 2017, with 33.8 million hotel rooms booked.

Phuket is celebrating its most recent award after being named the ‘Second Best Beach in the World’ by business publication US News & World Report.

It continues to win accolades from major international media for its white sands, aquamarine waters and limestone cliffs that attract millions of travellers every year. This island was hailed as “a little piece of paradise” according to the magazine.

Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) Governor, Mr. Yuthasak Supasorn, said everyone in Phuket, both public and private stakeholders should take pride in this achievement as it demonstrates the island’s appeal as one of the world’s most desirable beach destinations.

“Obviously we are delighted to win this important award. The fact the honour comes from the US News & World Report is even more gratifying given its target audience and readership.

“In the past, Phuket has won several other prestigious awards for its beaches as well, so we are very grateful for the continued recognition.” Mr. Yuthasak added.

Phuket continues to expand its appeal as it tries to shift upmarket. It is also quickly established itself as one of the super-yacht hubs of Southeast Asia, a tropical playground for various groups of tourists who enjoy the island’s charms.

Along with its tropical appeal, Phuket beckons travellers wanting to experience its world-famous cuisine. Phuket was listed by UNESCO as a Gastronomic City in 2015 and will be included in the Michelin Guide Bangkok, Phuket and Phang Nga 2019.
