The operator of MRT’s Blue and Purple Line trains will next month run a free tour of historical places around a station on the Thonburi side.

Bangkok Expressway and Metro (BEM) will organise its fifth “Happy Journey with BEM” on December 9.

The trip will take registered MRT users on a tour of temples and King Taksin’s palace in remembrance of King Taksin’s major achievements.

The BEM said the trip would be led by special guest Pramin Kruethong, a historical academic who wrote a book on the ancient Thonburi capital.

Pramin will play the role of special tour guide in helping travellers observe the beauty of the palace, which was built with a mix of Thai and Chinese architecture. The trip would then move on to the Temple of Dawn, which is regarded as the temple of the Thonburi capital. The tour would continue to Wat Hong Rattanaram, with Pramin explaining to the visitors how and why the temple was important during the Thonburi era of King Taksin.

Tourists are descending on popular Bueng Boraphet in Nakhon Sawan to witness the beauty of blossoming pink lotuses covering an area of more than 100 rai amid cool-cold weather in November.

Bueng Boraphet, or Boraphet Marsh, is the largest freshwater swamp and lake in Thailand. It is spread across 200 square kilometres in Nakhon Sawan’s Muang district and is home to more than 200 species of wild animals, birds and plants.

“The lotuses started blossoming since early this month and are expected to fully bloom throughout the swamp areas in early December,” said a staffer at Bueng Boraphet Wildlife Sanctuary Office.

“Lotuses bloom in the morning from 6am to 9.30pm, so tourists are advised to come here early or risk missing a spectacular sight.”

The cold temperatures in the north of Thailand also draw thousands of migratory birds to Bueng Boraphet, making this time of the year a perfect period for birdwatching.

Japan and Singapore ‘top tourism destinations for Thai people’

MONDAY, NOVEMBER 14, 2022

Japan and Singapore are the most popular destinations for Thai tourists, Thai Airways International (THAI) revealed.

THAI’s chief of commercials, Korakot Chatasingha, said recently that the advance reservations for the New Year holidays has increased continuously by around 65% on average.

The most popular routes are to Japan with a cabin factor of around 70%.

Currently, the airline operates five routes to Japan:

  • Bangkok – Tokyo (Narita Airport) two flights
  • Bangkok – Tokyo (Haneda Airport) one flight
  • Bangkok – Fukuoka one flight
  • Bangkok – Nagoya one flight
  • Bangkok – Osaka one flight

The airline is also planning to start a Bangkok – Sapporo route in December in response to tourists’ demand.

Korakot said, “Currently, Japanese routes are well-received by passengers, especially Thai people. After the Japanese government eased Covid prevention measures and allowed more tourists to enter the country, more passengers are interested in these routes, especially flights in winter, which are popular with Thai people.”

He explained that the Japanese government had set a limit for the number of people entering the country from August to September. In the first phase, only 190 seats per day were available and later increased to 600 seats per day.

After the limits were removed, tourism has been active again and the airline is confident that the cabin factor will increase gradually, as it is planning to increase the number of flights to Japan.

He said Singapore is another popular destination because it is a short flight and the country organises events and creates new tourist destinations to welcome them.

The cabin factor for the Singapore route is around 80%, increasing gradually. The airline has increased the number of flights from two flights per day to three, and will increase to four flights in December.

Thailand pushes for Phuket as next Specialised Expo venue

SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 13, 2022

The Foreign Ministry is being urged to get Thai embassies and consulates to lobby for the election of Phuket as the venue of Specialised Expo 2027/28.

A source from the Thailand Convention and Exhibition Bureau (TCEB) said on Sunday that there were three reasons for pushing for Phuket to be selected. They are:

• Phuket will be the first venue in Southeast Asia and South Asia to host the Specialised Expo.

• The Phuket expo will showcase measures to do away with inequality in public health services and measures to protect the environment under the “People, Planet and Prosperity” concept.

• Phuket will serve as an ideal venue as it is already an international hub for health and a leading destination for medical tourism.

Specialised Expos, also known as “International Recognised Exhibitions”, are global events designed to respond to a precise challenge facing humanity.

The source said campaign teams in Thailand and overseas have been actively lobbying for members of the Bureau International des Expositions (BIE) to vote for Phuket.

The election will be held in June next year as part of a BIE general assembly.

Five countries are competing for the next Specialised Expo, namely: the United States (Minnesota), Thailand (Phuket), Serbia (Belgrade), Spain (Malaga) and Argentina (San Carlos de Bariloche). Each candidate has submitted a detailed candidature dossier to the BIE.

The Thai Meteorological Department has forecast that temperatures will rise by a degree or two in the North from Sunday to Friday next week due to a weakening high-pressure system covering upper Thailand.

Some areas in the North will experience thundershowers as the easterly and southeasterly winds are blowing in moisture from the South China Sea.

People have been advised to take care of their health, especially with the weather constantly changing.

Tourists dazzled by sight of thousands of jumping fish on a Krabi island

THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 10, 2022

Thousands of fish jumping onto a bridge on Ko Lanta, a tourist island in Krabi province, left hordes of tourists dazzled.

While docking his boat at a pier at Lanta Yai Island on Wednesday afternoon, Sunan Madsaron, a Krabi local, said he saw thousands of small fish jumping on a concrete bridge connecting the pier to the land, prompting him to take a video with his phone.

Sunan said locals called these fish “Ta Maew”, or cat-eye fish, that usually live in shallow waters near the shore. They occasionally jump on land and locals would pick them up, sometimes enough to fill a fertiliser sack, and cook them as food.

An official at Krabi provincial fishery office said that the cat-eye fish is native to Ko Lanta’s shore and would sometimes jump on land during its egg-laying season, which is around March and November.

It is still unclear as to why they would jump out of the water, although some sources said fish might jump out of the water simultaneously when oxygen is inadequate, according to the official.

Ko Lanta Yai is part of Mu Ko Lanta National Park, a famous marine tourist destination about 20km off the coast of Krabi.
