Billionaire Bloomberg donates $50mn to opioid crisis

Breaking News December 01, 2018 05:06

Washington

New York billionaire and rumored presidential contender Michael Bloomberg announced Friday a $50 million donation to the opioid crisis amid a progressive decline in US life expectancy.

A record high of more than 70,000 people died of drug overdose deaths in 2017 and suicides climbed 3.7 percent, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s National Center for Health Statistics announced Thursday.

As a result, the average life span in America — seen as a key indicator of national health and prosperity — fell to 78.6 years. Statistics show a downward trend in life expectancy since 2014.

Bloomberg Philanthropies said the donation would help up to 10 states strengthen prevention and treatment efforts by addressing the root causes of opioid addiction and save lives over the next three years.

“We are experiencing a national crisis: For the first time since World War I, life expectancy in the US has declined over the past three years — and opioids are a big reason why,” said Bloomberg.

“We cannot sit by and allow this alarming trend to continue — not when so many Americans are being killed in what should be the prime of their lives.”

The billionaire announced the funding at The Bloomberg American Health Summit in Washington.

Pennsylvania, which was the US state with the highest number of drug overdose deaths in 2017, will be the first to participate in the initiative.

Bloomberg, who served as New York mayor from 2002-2013 has an estimated worth of $47 billion, according to Forbes. He founded financial information and media company Bloomberg in 1981.

One of America’s leading philanthropists, he has donated billions to gun control and climate change, and has given lavishly to Democratic candidates.

Earlier this month, he announced $1.8 billion in financial aid for his alma mater, Johns Hopkins University to make an elite education more affordable to low- and middle-income students.

A powerful earthquake rocked Anchorage on Friday, violently shaking homes and businesses in Alaska’s largest city and knocking out power to some residents.

The 7.0 magnitude quake was located about eight miles (13 kilometers) north of Anchorage and struck at 8:29 am local time (1729 GMT), the US Geological Survey said.

The city’s police department said it had caused “major infrastructure damage to Anchorage.”

“Many homes and buildings are damaged,” the police department said in a statement. “Many roads and bridges are closed. Stay off the roads if you don’t need to drive.”

There were no immediate reports of significant injuries.

A tsunami warning was issued for the Cook Inlet and the Kenai Peninsula following the massive quake but was quickly lifted.

Residents of Anchorage posted pictures and videos to Twitter of damage to their homes and stores — belongings knocked off of shelves, broken windows and pictures scattered on the floor.

Local CBS affiliate KTVA posted a video of a room shaking back and forth with panels falling from the ceiling and lights flickering as people hid under desks.

“Everyone just sprinted out of the coffee shop I was at in Anchorage in the middle of a huge earthquake,” Nat Herz, a reporter with news portal Alaska’s Energy Desk, posted on Twitter.

“Car alarms going off, etc. But not seeing any serious damage here aside from random stuff falling over. People going back to computers, meetings,” Herz said.

University, airport closed

The Anchorage Daily News said the quake caused damage at the newspaper, cracking walls and mangling ceiling panels.

ENSTAR Natural Gas company warned residents to beware of gas leaks while the main water company said there had been water main breaks.

Municipal Light & Power warned people to look out for downed power lines and said it was seeking to restore electricity to affected customers.

The University of Alaska announced it was closing for the day. “All non-essential personnel should go home,” it said in a tweet.

Anchorage airport temporarily halted incoming and outgoing flights after the air control tower was evacuated.

A video posted to Twitter showed a buckled road on a highway exit ramp leading to the airport and a stranded car.

The Anchorage School District told parents to come pick up their children “when you feel it is safe to do so.”

White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders said President Donald Trump had been briefed about the quake and was monitoring damage reports.

“We are praying for the safety of all Alaskans!” she said.

US approves seismic tests despite dolphin, whale concerns

The US government Friday took a big step toward opening oil and gas drilling in the Atlantic ocean by approving seismic airgun tests that experts warn are harmful to dolphins and whales.

Last year, President Donald Trump signed an executive order to expand offshore drilling, and ordered federal agencies to fast track permits for seismic airgun blasting.

Environmental groups have staunchly opposed the use of seismic airgun blasting, which research has shown can cause loud, far-traveling noise in the ocean that disrupts marine life, including fish and sea turtles.

The latest move would open a vast offshore area from New Jersey to Florida to underwater mapping for fossil fuel exploration, for the first time in decades.

“This action flies in the face of massive opposition to offshore drilling and exploration from over 90 percent of coastal municipalities in the proposed blast zone,” said Diane Hoskins, campaign director at Oceana, an advocacy group.

“These permits were already denied because of the known harm that seismic airgun blasting causes.”

Last year, the Bureau of Ocean and Energy Management denied a series of applications for seismic blasting, saying the “value of obtaining the geophysical and geological information from new airgun seismic surveys in the Atlantic does not outweigh the potential risks of those surveys’ acoustic pulse impacts on marine life.”

The same agency issued a report several years ago that found airgun blasts could injure as many as 138,000 marine mammals, including dolphins and whales.

Airguns are toted underwater by boats and repeat loud blasts every 10-12 seconds, sometimes for months at a time, and a single ship may tow up to 96 airguns, Oceana says.

– ‘Incidentally’ harass marine mammals –

The announcement by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Fisheries department authorizes five companies to “incidentally, but not intentionally, harass marine mammals” as they “conduct geophysical surveys in support of hydrocarbon exploration in the Atlantic Ocean.”

The actual permits for drilling offshore would be issued by a separate government office, the Bureau of Ocean and Energy Management. Those permits have not yet been issued.

NOAA experts said their decision allowed for geographical limits on where airgun blasting could take place, would offer protections for endangered right whales, and did not explicitly allow for the killing of any marine mammals.

While Benjamin Laws, a biologist at the NOAA Fisheries Office of Protected Resources, acknowledged that seismic blasting could have “effects” on marine life, he said during a conference call with reporters: “Our analysis shows we shouldn’t expect there would be impacts greater than negligible on annual rates of recruitment or survival for these populations.”

Jolie Harrison, chief of the Permits and Conservation Division in the NOAA Fisheries Office of Protected Resources, added: “We really went to great lengths here to make sure that we understood what the effects are.”

Extra steps by exploration operations are to include visual and acoustic monitoring to detect marine mammal sounds underwater before seismic blasts can begin.

NOAA also said its approval requires third-party observers to ride on geophysical survey vessels “to listen and watch for marine life and alert operators if a protected species comes within a certain distance.”

A NOAA spokeswoman said commercial operators would have to contract with third party observers, and “the observers have the authority to call for a shutdown when required.”

US President Donald Trump reaffirmed Friday in a meeting with his South Korean counterpart Moon Jae-in that he wants a second summit with North Korea’s leader, the White House said.

Trump and Moon, meeting on the sidelines of the G20 summit in Buenos Aires, “reaffirmed their commitment to achieve the final, fully verified denuclearization” of North Korea, Trump spokeswoman Sarah Sanders said.

They agreed on the need for “maintaining vigorous enforcement of existing sanctions to ensure the DPRK understands that denuclearization is the only path,” Sanders said, using the North’s official name, the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea.

However, Trump made clear that he also wants to follow up on his historic June summit in Singapore as he tries to persuade the reclusive regime to give up its nuclear weapons.

“President Trump discussed his intention to have a second US-DPRK summit,” Sanders said, and the two leaders “restated their commitment to closely coordinate on next steps.”

Moon’s top press secretary, Yoon Young-chan, was quoted by Yonhap news agency saying that Trump “asked that South Korea and the US closely cooperate so the next summit will be another historical milestone in the process of denuclearizing the Korean Peninsula.”

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo was due to meet with a top North Korean official in early November, but the meeting was abruptly put off, with North Korea insisting that the United States ease sanctions.

TEXAS – A United States airline issued an apology after a gate agent was accused this month of making fun of a 5-year-old’s unique name.

Tracy Redford and her 5-year-old daughter Abcde (pronounced Ab-si-dee), were about to board their Southwest Airlines flight from California to El Paso, Texas, as per the ABC13 on Nov 29.

One gate agent, however, started to laugh upon seeing the young girl’s boarding pass, going as far as taking a photo of it to post on social media apart from making fun of her with fellow colleagues.

“The gate agent started laughing, pointing at me and my daughter, talking to other employees,” Traci was quoted of saying.

As per Traci, she was informed that the photo of her daughter’s boarding pass was posted on Facebook where it was mocked.

“It was actually brought to my attention by somebody who had seen it on Facebook and reported it to Southwest Airlines,” she continued to say in the report.

“And after two weeks of doing a formal complaint, Southwest hadn’t done anything.”

Tracy has since used the unpleasant experience as a life lesson for little Abcde. After being asked by the girl why the gate agent was laughing at her, Traci told her, “Not everyone is nice and not everyone is going to be nice and it’s unfortunate.”

Meanwhile, Southwest Airlines issued a statement where they apologised to the family for the incident, citing that living by the Golden Rule—treating every individual with respect in person and online—is part of their signature hospitality to customers.

“The post is not indicative of the care, respect, and civility we expect from all of our Employees,” the statement said.

“We have followed up with the Employee involved, and while we do not disclose personnel actions publicly, we are using this as an opportunity to reinforce our policies and emphasize our expectations for all Employees.”

AS photos of the purported wedding between the Yang di-Pertuan Agong Sultan Muhammad V and a former Russian beauty queen go viral online, Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad says he has no knowledge of the union.

“I don’t know. I don’t have any official confirmation, so I can’t say anything,” Dr Mahathir replied when asked by a member of the media during a press conference at the Parliament yesterday.

Speculation has been rife ever since the pictures emerged showing the 49-year-old Ruler and Oksana Voevodina, 25, who is Miss Moscow 2015, apparently tying the knot.

The ceremony supposedly took place on Nov 22 at a concert hall in the Moscow suburb of Barvikha, after the former beauty queen is said to have converted to Islam.

In one of the viral pictures, the couple are seen smiling and clad in Malay traditional outfits, with Voevodina wearing a headscarf.

The news of their “marriage” has been spreading on social media and even in some British tabloids, but as of yesterday, Istana Negara had not issued any statement on the matter.

According to the British-based Mail Online, the King met Voevodina, whose father is said to be a doctor, 18 months ago when she was modelling luxury watches.

Reports also said the wedding was alcohol-free and served only halal food.

She is believed to be a business graduate from the elite Plekhanov Russian University of Economics.

Sultan Muhammad V is currently on leave as the Yang di-Pertuan Agong from Nov 2 until Dec 31.

The Sultan of Perak, Sultan Nazrin Muizzuddin Shah, is exercising the functions of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong during this period.

Putrajaya, Malaysia – Relatives of those on board Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370 Friday handed over new-found debris believed to be from the ill-fated plane, hoping it could help shed light on the jet’s mysterious disappearance four years ago.

The Boeing 777 jet with 239 people on board vanished on March 8, 2014 during a routine flight from Kuala Lumpur in the world’s greatest aviation mystery.

An official report released in July following a lengthy investigation and years of fruitless searching gave no new clues about why the plane disappeared, sparking anger among relatives.

V.R. Nathan, whose wife Anne Daisy was on the ill-fated jet, told AFP the debris consisted of five small plane parts found off Madagascar.

They were turned over to Malaysian Transport Minister Anthony Loke on Friday at his office in the administrative capital Putrajaya outside Kuala Lumpur.

“Five new pieces of debris have been recovered off the coast of Madagascar, including one piece that has part of a label still readable,” Nathan told AFP, adding the items were discovered by fishermen.

“We want the government to continue searching for these debris and piece them together like a jigsaw puzzle so that we can get some clue as to what happened to the plane.”

His daughter Grace told reporters the items were found between December 2016 and August 2018, adding that “this… offers a fresh ray of hope to all the relatives.”

Only three confirmed fragments of MH370 have been found so far, all of them on western Indian Ocean shores, including a two-metre (six-foot) wing part known as a flaperon.

Malaysia’s new government, which took power in May, has said the search could be resumed but only if new and compelling evidence comes to light.

Loke, the transport minister, said the government will “immediately verify the items” ranging from almost 60 centimetres (two feet) in length to palm-sized.

“We will need some credible leads before we reopen the search,” he told reporters.

T. Mohan, one of the experts who took part in the investigation, told AFP that one of the items “is a floor panel of a Boeing aircraft.”

The disappearance of MH370 triggered the largest hunt in aviation history.

However searchers scouring a 120,000-square kilometre (46,000-square mile) area of Indian Ocean have failed to locate the missing plane.

An Australian-led hunt was suspended in January last year.

US exploration firm Ocean Infinity resumed the search in a different location at the start of this year on a “no find, no fee” basis, using high-tech drones to scour the seabed.

But that search was also called off within months after failing to find anything.

Gas leak caused deadly blast in China Olympic city

Beijing

A gas leak caused an explosion this week that killed 23 people in a northern Chinese city that will host part of the 2022 Winter Olympics, authorities said Friday.

The blast in the small hours of Wednesday in the city of Zhangjiakou, some 200 kilometres (125 miles) northwest of Beijing, also injured 22 people.

“Initial investigations have shown that the explosion was caused by a gas leak from the Hebei Shenghua Chemical Co. of ChemChina,” Zhangjiakou mayor Wu Weidong told reporters.

“Vinyl chloride spread to the public road outside the factory and was ignited by an open flame.”

Authorities previously reported that a truck carrying combustible chemicals had blown up while entering a factory, igniting other nearby vehicles, but the cause of the explosion had not been known until now.

Thirty-eight trucks and 12 cars were also damaged in the explosion, which eyewitnesses say created a huge fireball that engulfed vehicles on an entire stretch of road.

The explosion occurred in the city’s Qiaodong district some 45 minutes away from Chongli, which will host some of the mountain sport competitions during the 2022 Winter Games in Beijing.

Industrial accidents are common in China, where safety regulations are often poorly enforced.

In 2015, giant chemical blasts in a container storage facility killed at least 165 people in the northern port city of Tianjin.

Bangladesh arrests 10 Rohingya bound for Malaysia

Cox’s Bazar, Bangladesh

Bangladeshi police have arrested 10 Rohingya refugees as they were about to board a boat to travel to Malaysia, an officer said Friday.

Southeast Bangladesh is home to around a million Rohingya, most of whom fled Myanmar last year following a military crackdown and are now in vast camps.

There are fears that with the current calmer weather, many may try to reach other more prosperous countries by boat by paying often unscrupulous traffickers.

The elite Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) said it stopped the six young women and four men at Shah Porir Dwip, a coastal station, on Thursday night before they could board a boat on the Naf river estuary dividing Bangladesh and Myanmar.

“They were about to head to Malaysia through the Bay of Bengal. The girls won’t be aged more than 22 years. They were tempted that they can get married with well-off persons in Malaysia,” RAB Cox’s Bazar chief Mahedi Hasan told AFP.

People smugglers in recent years have taken tens of thousands of Rohingya to Malaysia before Bangladesh launched a crackdown in 2015 after Thai authorities discovered mass graves and overcrowded boats drifting at sea.

Hasan said the women paid $100 each to traffickers and the men paid nearly $250. “Each of them were supposed to pay another 200,000 taka (nearly $2,500) once the boat crosses Thai waters,” he said.

A Bangladeshi trafficker was also arrested, he added.

RAB said two of those who were arrested came to Bangladesh from Myanmar in 2000-2001. The rest were part of exodus of around 720,000 last year.

Early this month the Bangladeshi coastguard intercepted a boat in the Bay of Bengal carrying 33 Rohingya to Malaysia.

The sea tends to stay calm between November and March. During this time of year even small boats can travel long distances via the Bay of Bengal and the Andaman Sea.

Australia moves to curb ‘orphanage tourism’

Sydney

Australia has criminalised the act of falsely inducing children into orphanages as a form of slavery, in what is believed to be the first move of its kind in the world.

Amid warnings that children in poor countries are being shipped into the institutions to meet the lucrative demand for western volunteerism, a new law has been introduced to tackle the issue.

The Modern Slavery Bill was passed by both houses of parliament on Thursday and includes an explicit reference to “trafficking and/or exploitation of children in orphanages.”

Under the new law, so-called “orphanage trafficking” will be treated as a slavery and trafficking offence.

“Australia is the first country in the world to recognise orphanage trafficking as a form of modern slavery,” said Paul Ronalds of Save the Children Australia, a non-governmental lobby group.

It is estimated that around 80 percent of the eight million children in orphanages worldwide have parents or family who could take care of them.

Sometimes children are sent away, with their parents believing they will get a good education.

According to Save the Children, more than 50 percent of Australian universities advertised orphanage placements as a volunteering opportunity overseas.

Activists hope the legal change will cause Australians to more carefully vet where they volunteer overseas.
