Runaway mining train travels 90 km without driver

A huge runaway train laden with iron ore had to be derailed remotely after speeding through the Australian outback for almost an hour.

The 268-wagon train started on its solo journey when the driver got down from his cab to carry out an inspection, and was soon hurtling along at up to 110 kilometres (68 miles) per hour.

Mining giant BHP, which owns the four-locomotive train, decided to derail before it reached the town of Port Hedland near its Western Australia Pilbara site, and flicked the points.

The train crashed off the rails, damaging around 1,500 metres (1,600 yards) of tracks, but hurting no one.

Aerial images published by The West Australian showed a trail of twisted wreckage after Monday’s incident, with some wagons covered by their loads.

Australia is one of the world’s major sources of iron ore.

BHP said Wednesday more than 130 people were working to recover the train and fix the track — a key access route for the enormous mining facility — with partial rail operations expected to start up again in about a week.

The mine sites were still running and reserves would be used to maintain port operations, “however they are not expected to cover the entire period of interruption”, a BHP spokeswoman said in a statement.

“We will be liaising with our customers in relation to our contractual commitments over this period,” she added.

The Australian Transport Safety Bureau said it was investigating the incident. There was no indication of what had caused the train to move without its driver.

“We cannot speculate on the outcome of the investigation however we are working with the appropriate authorities and our focus remains on the safe recovery of our operations,” the BHP spokeswoman said.

BHP’s shares closed 0.48 percent lower to Aus$33.39 (US$24.18) in Sydney Wednesday as reports in Britain said the Anglo-Australian firm was facing a £5 billion (US$6.5 billion) lawsuit over the deadly Samarco dam failure in Brazil in 2015.

BHP is also facing an Australian class action involving investors pursuing the miner for losses relating to the collapse.

Nineteen people were killed and a wave of toxic waste was unleashed when a dam burst at the mine in one of Brazil’s worst environmental disasters.

Manila city authority defends ‘stairway to heaven’

Better to climb a “stairway to heaven” than cross the “highway to hell,” the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) said on Tuesday as it defended the P10-million steel footbridge being constructed on Edsa-Kamuning in Quezon City.

The structure which looks daunting to people with disabilities, the elderly or those suffering from a fear of heights is expected to be finished by the middle of the month.

Stopgap measure

Located near the Manuel L. Quezon University, the footbridge is supposed to be a stopgap measure to avoid accidents on one of Metro Manila’s busiest roads, said MMDA spokesperson Celine Pialago.

She pointed to MMDA data which showed that at least 10 accidents happen in the area every month.

“Pedestrians are either too reckless or lazy to look for safe crossing lanes,” Pialago said. “That’s the best compromise we can come up with instead of allowing them to just cross Edsa. What matters to us is the safety of the public.”

Most netizens, however, begged to differ. After pictures of the footbridge went viral on social media, a lot of them called it an eyesore and safety hazard.

Most traditional footbridges have a flat, single level pathway. Some are made of concrete and have a roof to protect people from the elements.

The Kamuning footbridge on the other hand, has an inclined pathway that is almost 45 degrees.

At its highest point, it hangs at least three meters above the cable wires of the Metro Rail Transit 3 (MRT 3).

The design was necessary because the MRT 3 railway tracks between the GMA-Kamuning and Quezon Avenue stations are almost the same level as the road. If that stretch had been elevated, this would have allowed the footbridge to be built underneath.

No overhead protection

Critics have also pointed out that the steel structure is completely exposed with no overhead protection.

Pialago explained that the MMDA wanted to prevent it from being used as a shelter by vagrants or as a hunting ground for muggers.

If the MMDA had its way, she said, the footbridge would have been made of concrete. But the agency’s lack of funds often mean making do with whatever resources it has.

“We can assure the public that the bridge is as safe as it can be,” she said. “But if they still think it’s too risky, then I suggest they walk another 500 m to the left to cross the Timog bridge, or the extra 500 m to the right to cross Quezon Avenue. That’s where they ought to be crossing in the first place.”

Hong Kong police shot and critically injured a man who they said threatened officers with a knife during a stop-and-search operation in a busy subway station on Wednesday.

It is rare for police to shoot suspects in Hong Kong, where it is illegal for the public to carry firearms.

Officers intercepted a “suspicious” man in Sham Shui Po station but he then pulled a six-inch (15-centimetre) knife from his backpack, divisional commander Chow Ngai-kong told reporters.

After giving him a warning, a policewoman shot him and he was sent to hospital with a stomach injury.

The 55-year-old knifeman, who has been arrested, is in a critical condition.

Asked by reporters why police had fired at the man during rush hour in a crowded station, Chow said their lives had been under threat.

“The male was using a life-threatening sharp-edged weapon to try to attack officers at the scene,” Chow said.

“She has considered whether she has the opportunity to hit the target before she actually opened fire,” he added.

The man was a Hong Kong identity card holder, Chow said, giving no further detail on the suspect.

Passengers create stink over pungent planeload of durian

A cargo of pungent durian fruit led an Indonesian plane to be delayed for an hour after passengers turned their noses up at the funky freight and refused to fly.

Durian is highly popular in Southeast Asia but very divisive. While some consider it the “king of fruits”, likening its creamy texture and intense aroma to blue cheese, detractors consider its odour to be closer to sewage, stale vomit or damp socks.

Passengers booked on a Sriwijaya Air flight from Bengkulu province in Sumatra to Jakarta on Monday complained to staff after smelling the fruit and refused to get on the plane — repulsed by the pungent payload and concerned about the extra weight on board.

The airline admitted it was carrying more than two tonnes of the whiffy wares but insisted they posed no danger to the flight, adding the smell would dissipate once the aircraft took off.

“Durian is not classified as a hazardous material to be transported on a plane,” Sriwijaya Air official Abdul Rahim told national television station Kompas TV late Tuesday.

He blamed unusually hot weather for the stench.

“We made the necessary precautions, such as putting in pandan leaves and coffee powder to absorb the durian smell,” Rahim said.

Staff decided to unload the fruit after passengers who had boarded the flight decided to get off the plane, which took off an hour later and landed safely in Jakarta.

Bengkulu airport staff said they would review procedures regarding transport of durian to avoid passenger discomfort in the future.

Democrats seize US House in rebuke to Trump

Breaking News November 07, 2018 11:45

Washington

Democrats seized control of the lower house of Congress in midterm elections Tuesday, dealing a stern rebuke to Donald Trump almost two years into his polarizing, rollercoaster presidency.

Fox and NBC television networks called the result in the US House of Representatives, while confirming expectations that Trump’s Republicans will retain control of the Senate.

The result upends the balance of power in Washington, where Trump has enjoyed an easy ride from Republican dominance of both houses of Congress since his shock election in 2016.

Democrats will now be able to block legislation and light a fire under Trump’s feet with investigations of his opaque finances and Russian interference in his 2016 election, and possibly push for impeachment.

The verdicts in the House and Senate were based on incomplete results as vote counting continued across the country and some states were still voting in a congressional election cast as an unofficial referendum on Trump.

Giddy predictions by Democrats of a so-called “blue wave” landslide in the House were still premature, even if a majority appeared guaranteed.

Trump was watching the results roll in from the White House, where he spent the day holed up with friends and family.

Democrats confident

Americans voted enthusiastically, with long lines quickly forming at polling stations from New York to California and from Missouri to Georgia.

All 435 seats in the House of Representatives, 35 seats in the 100-member Senate and 36 governorships were up for grabs.

Democrats quickly made important gains in the House, but Republicans defended in crucial races, like incumbent Andy Barr of Kentucky, whose House seat had seemed at risk.

In the Senate, Republican Mike Braun snatched the seat from Democratic Senator Joe Donnelly, but corruption scandal-tainted Senator Bob Menendez saved his seat for the Democrats in New Jersey.

Pollsters, gun shy after getting their 2016 presidential prediction wrong, urged caution.

Trump had fought hard before polling day, crisscrossing the country to claim that Democrats would introduce socialism and making incendiary attacks on illegal immigration that opponents denounced as racist.

Even so, Democrats were highly confident, with Nancy Pelosi, the party’s top leader in the House, saying “it’s just a question of the size of the victory.”

Former vice president Joe Biden, often touted as a possible Democratic candidate to take on Trump in 2020, said he’d have been “dumbfounded” not to win the House.

Results were to continue trickling in through the night, with the last polls closing in Alaska at 0600 GMT Wednesday.

Buzz on the streets

According to Michael McDonald of the US Elections Project, 38.4 million Americans cast their ballots early ahead of this election, compared with 27.4 million in the 2014 midterm.

And on the streets there was a palpable buzz all day.

“We have already seen huge turnout, people out and about knocking on doors, making sure everybody gets out there, but I think turnout will be very, very high,” Democratic candidate Katie Porter, who is running in Irvine, California, against two-term Republican incumbent Mimi Walters, told AFP.

On the other side of the country, in Atlanta, Georgia, voters waited in line for nearly two hours to cast ballots, according to local media reports.

Trump himself noted the energy as he wrapped up a punishing schedule of rallies around the country that were intended to boost Republican candidates — and his own brand heading towards reelection in 2020.

“The midterm elections used to be, like, boring,” Trump told a crowd in Cleveland, Ohio, on Monday. “Now it’s like the hottest thing.”

Jobs and fear

Voting in Chicago, James Gerlock, 27, a Republican, said he wanted to see more of the soaring economic growth that Trump says is the fruit of his business-friendly policies.

“I am extremely happy with the economy,” Gerlock said. “I just want to keep everything moving, because I’m loving it.”

But Democrats have been fired up by anger at Trump’s extraordinary attacks over the last few weeks against immigrants, claiming that his opponents seek to throw open the borders to “drug dealers, predators and bloodthirsty MS-13 killers.”

Trump has sent soldiers to the Mexican border, threatened to have illegal immigrants shot if they throw stones, and vowed to restrict citizenship rights.

Beto O’Rourke, a charismatic Democrat who lost in a closely watched bid to dethrone Republican Senator Ted Cruz in Texas, told voters that Trump was wrong, describing his state as built from “immigrants, asylum seekers and refugees.”

Great-grandmother, 106, gets US citizenship on Election Day

A 106-year-old great-grandmother born in El Salvador became an American citizen Tuesday, as the US held bitterly contested midterm elections in which Central American immigration was a hot button issue.

Maria Valles Bonilla waved a small American flag at a ceremony in Washington, her hand on her heart as she pledged allegiance to the United States surrounded by family, including her great-grandchildren.

She was interviewed beforehand by US Citizenship and Immigration Services agents, who determined that she met all the necessary conditions to be naturalized as an American citizen, a spokesman said.

During her interview, Valles Bonilla said her late husband had harbored the dream of becoming American and so she filled out the paperwork and completed the process in his honor.

President Donald Trump has led a virulent campaign targeting illegal immigration, focusing on thousands of migrants making their way on foot toward the United States in the hopes of obtaining asylum.

Many members of the caravan come from El Salvador, fleeing its endemic violence and poverty.

Hours before polls closed in one of America’s most closely watched Senate races pop superstar Beyonce lent her support to Beto O’Rourke, the Texas Democratic candidate hoping to unseat Republican Ted Cruz.

Beyonce, a Houston native, posted a series of self-portraits that showed her sporting a cap with the slogan “Beto for Senate” and the message: “Every vote counts.”

“Every race matters,” the queen of pop wrote. “We can’t voice our frustrations and complain about what’s wrong without voting and exercising our power to make it right.”

“We need you.”

O’Rourke — a charismatic three-time congressman and former punk band member — tweeted his thanks to Beyonce, who in the past has thrown her star power behind Barack Obama and presidential hopeful Hillary Clinton.

The high-profile 11th hour endorsement came as American voters were pouring into polling stations to wrap a heated midterm campaign seen as a test of Donald Trump’s contentious presidency.

O’Rourke’s battle against Ted Cruz — a 47-year-old who fought Trump for the 2016 Republican presidential nomination — is one of the most expensive and closely watched Senate races in the sharply divided United States.

A win from the 46-year-old O’Rourke — whose given names are Robert Francis but who goes by Beto — would post a major win for the embattled Democratic Party.

Beyonce was a last-minute addition to the list of stars backing O’Rourke, who also garnered support from Houston hip-hop artist Travis Scott and NBA royalty LeBron James.

“Sending you all love and positivity on this happy voting day!” Beyonce wrote.

Leaders from 10 Southeast Asian countries, along with counterparts from China, the United States, Japan and Russia, are set to convene for the 33rd Asean Summit and Related Summits, which will be held at the Suntec Singapore International Convention and Exhibition Centre (Suntec) from November 13-15.

One of the key topics of discussion will be regional economic integration, given that ASEAN is expected to be the world’s fourth-largest economy by 2030.

Other issues expected to be on the table include the conclusion of the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) trade agreement and bolstering of cybersecurity across the region.

Running on the sidelines of the main summit meanwhile are the Asean Plus Three Summit and the East Asia Summit. At the end of these meetings, Singapore will hand over the Asean chairmanship to Thailand.

Also taking place concurrently with the ASEAN Summit is the Asean Business and Investment Summit (ABIS) 2018, which will be held from November 12-13 at the Sands Expo and Convention Centre.

ABIS 2018, ASEAN’s premier annual business and investment event, will revolve around the theme ‘Building Tomorrow, Connecting Today’, which encapsulates the ASEAN Business Advisory Council’s (ASEAN-BAC) goal of being forward looking in approach and innovative in building towards a resilient ASEAN.

The forum acts as a platform for key policymakers and top business leaders to share their thoughts on current issues concerning ASEAN’s business and investment environment.

Separately, the Singapore Police Force on its website stated that the 33rd ASEAN Summit and Related Summits have been declared as an ‘Enhanced Security Special Event’ under the Public Order Act.

The area around Suntec has correspondingly been designated as an ‘Enhanced Security Special Event Area’ from November 13-15, with roadblocks and stringent security checks to be conducted by police within this area to ensure the security of the summit.

UNESCO tracks inquiries into journalist killings

The UN’s culture and education watchdog said Tuesday it had created a database for tracking investigations into the murders of journalists around the world as calls rise for authorities to be held accountable for attacks on the press.

UNESCO said its observatory, which tracks nearly 1,300 killings going back to 1993, went live last Friday to coincide with the International Day to End Impunity for Crimes against Journalists.

Most recently the murder of the Saudi writer Jamal Khashoggi at Riyadh’s consulate in Istanbul, which Turkey claims was on the orders of the government led by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, has drawn widespread condemnation.

“These deaths provide a tragic demonstration of the risks many journalists face in the line of duty,” the Paris-based body said, noting that in 89 percent of cases the killers go unpunished.

It said more than 80 deaths have been reported so far this year, representing one journalist or other media employee killed every four days.

Often reporters are targeted while covering violent conflicts such as the fight against the Taliban in Afghanistan, where AFP photographer Shah Marai was among ten journalists killed by suicide bombers last April.

But others have occurred in democratic countries, including the brutal murder of the 30-year-old television journalist Viktoria Marinova in Bulgaria last month.

An Uber driver in California is facing kidnaping charges for refusing to allow four passengers out of his vehicle on Halloween night.

Khaled Ali, 35, pleaded not guilty to the charges on Monday, with his attorney saying he was not competent to stand trial.

Ali was arrested last Wednesday after leading police on a chase after several people called the emergency services a day before to report that he had taken them in the wrong direction after picking them up and had refused to allow them to exit his vehicle.

All of the victims managed to jump out of his car and alerted police.

He was arrested after leading police on a chase with two passengers in his car who managed to leap out.

Ali, who remains in jail in lieu of $475,000 bail, faces more than 23 years in prison if convicted.

The ride-sharing company Uber said it had removed Ali’s access to the platform and was cooperating with authorities.
