Some 50,000 foreign nationals visited South Korea last year to receive plastic surgeries and spent some 215 billion won ($189 million), a government report showed.

The amount spent by those who received plastic surgeries in Korea last year was almost four times higher than the figure for the same medical procedures in 2012.

Compared to 2016, 968 more foreign nationals visited Korea last year for plastic surgeries, while the total number of foreign patients who visited the country for medical treatments dropped by 6.5 per cent from 2016-2017.

The medical fees for plastic surgeries also accounted for 33.6 per cent of the total medical spending by foreign patients last year.

Those who visited cosmetic and dermatology clinics accounted for 23.2 per cent of all foreigners who visited Korea for medical reasons in 2017.

Among all plastic surgeries, orthognathic surgery, a corrective jaw surgery, was the most expensive, costing 17 million won. Other costly procedures included breast augmentation (9.2 million won), liposuction (5.6 million won), and rhinoplasty (5.3 million won).

Foreign patients also received double eyelid surgery, which costs about 2.2 million won, and hair transplant procedures, with each surgery costing about 4.8 million won. Those who came to Korea to receive cosmetic treatments or procedures on average spent 4.4 million won per person, the largest amount among all foreign patients.

Those who received noncosmetic, general surgical procedures, such as knee surgeries, on average spent 2.9 million won per person, while those who visited pediatric clinics spent 2.7 million won. Those who visited neurosurgeons spent 1.95 million won each.

A total of 397,882 foreigners received medical treatments in Korea last year, and together they spent 639.9 billion won in medical fees.

Student ‘Champ’ makes videos to tell world about love for HM the late King

ASEAN+ October 11, 2018 15:32

“I want the world to know the reason why Thais wholeheartedly greatly love His Majesty the late King Bhumibol Adulyadej and why he has cemented his place in Thai hearts for ages.”

The reasons for the great love are given in two video clips for the late King produced by Thanachote Pimelapthanabrun, or Champ, a 14-year-old student at Assumption College Thonburi.

Champ said he named the first video, “The King in the Heart of the People,” saying he wanted people around the globe to know why Thai people love HM King Rama IX.

For the second video clip, “Sufficient Economy,” Thanachote said he wanted the world to learn about the concept of the King’s Sufficiency Economy Theory, which has helped Thai people to live a balanced life and to be able to sustain themselves.

“The King created this concept because he wanted his people to have good lives and because he cared for his people,” he said.

Both videos were made last year with Thanachote taking on the roles of producer and narrator. He created his own English subtitles for the viewers.

Now boarding: Passengers ready for world’s longest flight

Singapore – Passengers were getting ready to board the world’s longest flight on Thursday — a marathon 19 hours in the air between Singapore and New York.

Two pilots, a special “wellness” menu and more than seven weeks’ worth of film and television entertainment were expected to accompany travellers on the 16,700-kilometre (10,400-mile) journey to the Big Apple.

Singapore Airlines Flight SQ22 will use the long-range Airbus A350-900ULR, configured to carry 161 passengers — 67 in business class and 94 in premium economy.

For the flight crew — which also includes two first officers and a 13-strong cabin contingent — the work load will be broken up, the airline said, with every person getting a mandatory minimum four hours’ rest.

For those not packing a weighty novel (or two), there will be 1,200 hours of audio-visual entertainment to choose from.

Dining options will include dishes the airline says have been selected to promote well-being in the skies, with organic dishes on the menu.

The cabin has higher-than-normal ceilings, larger windows and lighting designed to reduce jet lag — all part of an effort to lessen the stresses that can accompany almost a day on a plane.

“Research has shown that hydration and food intake are important factors (to consider), such as avoiding foods that cause gas or bloating as well as excessive alcohol,” Rhenu Bhuller, a healthcare expert at consultancy Frost & Sullivan, told AFP.

“The biggest concern is Deep Vein Thrombosis from a combination of sitting for too long and also from dehydration,” said Gail Cross, an associate consultant at the National University Hospital in Singapore.

– ‘Race between airlines’ –

The twin-engine plane that will make the journey uses a modified system that burns 25 percent less fuel compared to other aircraft of a similar size, Airbus said.

The flight from the city-state to Newark Airport can take up to 18 hours and 45 minutes under normal weather conditions, but the pilots will have something in reserve in an aircraft capable of flying more than 20 hours non-stop.

Singapore Airlines originally flew the route for nine years using the gas-guzzling, four-engine A340-500 before abandoning it in 2013 because high oil prices made the service unprofitable.

But the carrier is hoping that the introduction of more fuel-efficient planes will set cash registers ringing even as crude prices soar above $80.

Thursday’s flight will top the current longest direct link between cities — Qatar Airways Flight 921 from Auckland to Doha, which takes 17 hours 40 minutes.

“It’s turning out to be a race between a few airlines eyeing the longest routes inter-continentally,” said Shukor Yusof of aviation consultancy Endau Analytics.

“They are hoping to capitalise and exploit a very niche market,” he told AFP.

Facing increasingly strong competition in recent years, Singapore Airlines has consolidated its low-fare subsidiaries and is strengthening its premium segment.

“Ultra-long haul services comprise an important component of that strategy,” an airline spokesman told AFP.

The company is the first airline in the world to operate the A350-900ULR plane. It received the first aircraft in September. Six more are due for delivery by the end of the year.

“We are optimistic about the demand for non-stop services to the US,” the spokesman said.

PETALING JAYA: The Datuk, who was seen hitting and berating a carpark attendant in a viral video recently, did it all because of RM3 (Bt28).

Brickfields OCPD Asst Comm Ruslan Khalid said the victim, 31, had refused to raise the boom gate because the Datuk did not pay the RM3 parking fees.

“The suspect, who drove a Range Rover, then came to scold and hit the victim in the 9.20am incident on Sept 18.

“The victim, who suffered minor bruises, lodged a police report the next day,” he said when contacted on Thursday (Oct 11).

According to the text accompanying the 1.18-minute video, the incident happened at a carpark office at a five-star hotel in Kuala Lumpur.

“The poor staff (sic) had to undergo this treatment from this guy just because he thinks he is a Datuk or something like that.

“I am sure a police report must have been made but no action has been taken to date. Please viral (sic) this so the mad culprit is brought to justice,” the text read.

The man in the video was seen to be agitated with the carpark attendant, gesturing angrily before entering the booth, where he then shoves a chair and hits the man.

Facebook users said the man involved in hitting the attendant was a Datuk and a director of a local telecommunications company.

Netizens also suggested that the incident happened at a certain Kuala Lumpur hotel, but a spokesman for the hotel told The Star that they could not confirm if it happened at their premises.

“We can’t confirm that this is indeed here … There have not been any allegations made that I am aware of. If there are any allegations made, we will investigate,” the spokesman said.

Urgent : Three dead, IMF summit shaken as strong quake hits Indonesia Thursday

ASEAN+ October 11, 2018 13:35

By AFP

Jakarta – An earthquake Thursday killed three people in Indonesia and rattled hotels where IMF delegates are attending a major summit, a fortnight after a quake-tsunami killed more than 2,000 elsewhere in the archipelago.

The 6.0-magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Indonesia’s Bali and Java islands in the early hours, jolting residents awake and sending them rushing into the streets.

Some attendees in Bali for the International Monetary Fund and World Bank annual meetings this week evacuated their hotels as the quake shook the island.

“I felt the quake for at least 30 seconds and I panicked. At first I didn’t want to go out but then I decided to leave,” Katharina Sudiyono, an Indonesian attendee at the summit, told AFP.

Peter Jacobs, head of the Indonesian Central Bank’s IMF-World Bank taskforce, said delegates in Bali’s Nusa Dua district for the summit were quickly informed of the situation.

“Many summit participants woke up and asked questions, but we immediately sent out information to them that there had been an earthquake and the impact in Nusa Dua,” he told AFP.

There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries in Bali and the summit proceeded Thursday uninterrupted.

“We send our condolences to those affected by the earthquake. Here in Bali, the earthquake has not caused significant damage nor any disruption to the meetings,” an IMF spokesman said.

The conference centre was designed to withstand seismic events, and participants had been told to remain there in the event of a quake.

In case of tsunami risk, attendees would be evacuated to a nearby building.

Holidayers in the island’s popular tourist districts also rushed into the streets as buildings swayed.

“Wow, that was really strong and it lasted a long time,” said one woman who took refuge in a hotel parking lot in Nusa Dua, a few kilometres from where the IMF and World Bank are holding their meetings.

Others in Nusa Dua, south of Bali’s main international airport, also panicked.

“The quake was very big. I immediately woke up and took my little kids out of the house,” Ni Komang Sudiani told AFP.

“All my neighbours were also running, said the mother of two.

– Volatile archipelago –

Dwikorita Karnawati, the head of Indonesia’s geophysics agency who was also in Nusa Dua for the IMF summit, said no tsunami warning was issued.

“I felt the quake too,” she told AFP. “We are also still gathering data from our team in East Java.’

In East Java, three people were crushed to death in their sleep when the quake brought down buildings in Sumenep district and sent people fleeing their homes.

“Everybody panicked and the entire village ran outside. We have never experienced an earthquake as strong as last night,” Zainurrohman, a 21-year-old from the district told AFP.

“We stayed outside until dawn,” he said. Many Indonesians go by one name.

The tremor’s epicentre was in the Bali Sea around 40 kilometres (25 miles) off the eastern end of Java island, according to the United States Geological Survey.

The tremor comes after a 7.5-magnitude quake and subsequent tsunami struck off the Indonesian island of Sulawesi last month — around 1,000 kilometres northeast of the latest quake’s epicentre — killing more than 2,000 people.

Thousands more remain missing since the twin disaster ravaged the city of Palu and surrounding areas. The search for the dead is expected to end Thursday.

A string of earthquakes in Lombok in eastern Indonesia killed more than 550 people over the summer.

Indonesia, one of the most disaster-prone nations on earth, straddles the so-called Pacific “Ring of Fire”, where tectonic plates collide and many of the world’s volcanic eruptions and earthquakes occur.

Mu Pa rescue an inspiration for the world, says mission chief

THE multinational rescue operation to free the Mu Pa football team members from Tham Luang cave in Chiang Rai province should be an inspiration for people around the globe to help one another, the mission’s chief, Narongsak Ostanakorn, said in New York.

“I hope this experience inspires people to start living for others,” Narongsak said. “That would be a game changer for the world.”

Narongsak was speaking after receiving the 2018 Game Changer of the Year award at a ceremony hosted by Asia Society.

Narongsak, now the governor of Phayao province, was Chiang Rai governor when 12 Mu Pa football players and their deputy coach went missing in Tham Luang cave in late June. He led the 17-day successful mission that caught global attention and dominated world headlines.

Narongsak was joined on stage by deputy coach Ekkapon Chantawong and one of the young footballers, Adul Sam-on.

Adul had earned international praise for his English-language skills during a conversation with two British divers who first found the group 10 days after they had gone missing, without food in the dark, cold and flooded cave. Ekkapon was also hailed for taking care of the boys and for his advice in helping them survive the ordeal.

The other Mu Pa members were attending the International Youth Games in Buenos Aires at the invitation of the International Olympic Committee. They will follow the three and take part in “Thanking the World” activities in New York.

In a panel talk hosted by Asia Society’s Tom Nagorski, Ekkapon told UPI news agency through an interpreter, “It is unbelievable that everybody, every person around the world, would come and rescue us. I would like to express my thanks and gratitude to everybody who helped us.”

Narongsak was quoted as saying that there was a lot of pressure on his shoulders. By the 10th day of the mission, people didn’t believe [the children] could be still alive.”

UPI reported that inside the cave, where the group may have been digging a tunnel to the outside world, Ekkapon began to meditate and taught the boys to do the same.

Ekkapon, a former Buddhist monk who guided the teens to stay calm, may have saved their lives, said the governor.

Adul, who has been the focus of media attention said on Tuesday, “I’m not special. I am just like anybody else.”

The same award was also presented to Indra Nooyi, the chairman and former CEO of PepsiCo, the heroes of Fukushima, and Dr Munjed al-Muderis, who has given injured men and women the gift of mobility.

Do toilet papers have a heartbeat? Fitness trackers say yes

You may want to reconsider how you feel about the toilet paper after reading this story.

Recently, a number of users on Chinese social media platform Weibo discovered that their wearable fitness trackers can be used to detect the heartbeat of everyday items like toilet paper.

In a series of images, users who strapped their fitness trackers around a roll of toilet paper got readings like 71bpm (beats per minute) while a user with an Apple Watch got a reading of 69bpm.

One user tried it on a glass bottle and got a reading of 88bpm. A can of soft drink registered a reading of 97bpm.

Website Abacus posted a video on Oct 9 showing that the fitness tracker can also detect heartbeat in objects like a mug and even a banana.

Now before you go saving all the bananas from being eaten and toilet papers from being used, the Abacus site also provides an explanation.

Fitness trackers beam green light on the skin and then use the reflection to measure heart rate – the faster the heart beats, the faster the blood flows so more green light will be absorbed.

As objects can reflect light, it confuses the sensor as it’s designed to detect a pulse even when there isn’t one. So what you get is just a false reading. Phew.

Indonesia offers up to Rp 200 million for reporting graft

Jakarta

The administration of President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo has signed a regulation to give informants financial rewards for blowing the whistle on graft.

The new regulation, issued by the Law and Human Rights Ministry on Sept. 18, stipulates that informants who provide tips to the authorities regarding possible graft will be awarded with an official certificate and paid up to Rp 200 million (US$13,137).

“We want people’s participation in the prevention and eradication of corruption,” the President said on Wednesday.

When asked about the budget for the award, Jokowi said that question should be referred to the Finance Minister.

According to Article 17 of the regulation, the financial incentive will be adjusted to the amount of state losses caused by the reported corrupt practices.

Meanwhile, those reporting bribery will be given a financial reward of up to Rp 10 million, depending on the amount of losses caused by the crime.

Informants are allowed to either submit a verbal or oral report of a possible graft. The report must contain the identity of the informant and an elaboration of facts related to the suspected graft.

The authorities will conduct a thorough verification to ensure the legitimacy of the report 30 days after it is submitted by the informant. In addition, authorities will also evaluate the informant’s role in uncovering the crime, the risk inherent to the report and the quality of the report.

If the report is deemed valid, the informant is subject to legal protection from the government.
