Patricia Javier was named Mrs. Universe Philippines at the pageant’s coronation night last Saturday at Resorts World Manila.

Javier — real name Genesis Canlapan — starred in sexy films in her younger years and was recently in the 2017 GMA TV drama “Haplos”. These days, she promotes health and wellness, and is a fitness buff herself.

The actress is a mom of two kids with American husband Robert Walcher, a chiropractor. They have been married since 2005.

Her winning gowns were both in white: the Filipiniana was designed by fellow actress and another fitness buff Regine Tolentino, while the gown she would be crowned with was by Jojo Macapinlac.

This isn’t Javier’s first stint with pageantry, as she participated in the 1998 Binibining Pilipinas. She did not place in the said pageant.

The Philippines has yet to win Mrs. Universe, which recognizes married women between 25 to 45 years old who want to use their beauty for a cause.

Singapore

A Singapore court has ordered the return of millions of dollars misappropriated from Malaysian state fund 1MDB in a cross-border financial scandal that helped topple former leader Najib Razak.

Tan Rajah and Cheah, a Singapore-based law firm acting for 1MDB and the Malaysian government, said Monday the Singapore State Courts “have granted disposal orders” in respect to the money totalling Sg$15.3 million ($11.1 million).

“These monies are being transferred to the special 1MDB recovery bank account in Kuala Lumpur. Efforts to recover other unlawfully misappropriated assets are ongoing,” it said in a statement.

Malaysia’s new government under Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad, 93, has launched investigations into allegations that Najib and his cronies looted billions of dollars from the fund while he was in office.

Last month, a yacht worth around a quarter of a billion dollars, allegedly bought by Malaysian businessman Low Taek Jho using money taken from 1MDB, was returned to Malaysia from Indonesia.

Mahathir said authorities are also seeking to repossess a $35 million jet allegedly belonging to Low, a flamboyant international financier who is at the centre of the scandal, but whose whereabouts outside Malaysia remain unknown.

The Singapore police last month confirmed the jet is in the city-state.

Singapore is one of several countries, including the US and Switzerland, which have launched their own probes into the scandal, with the city-state focusing its investigation on the use of its financial system to launder stolen 1MDB money.

Singapore authorities in 2016 said they had seized a total Sg$240 million ($174 million) in bank accounts and properties related to the 1MDB probe.

The city-state also closed the branches of two Swiss banks and jailed a Swiss banker and three Singaporean private bankers following its investigation.

The US Justice Department, which is seeking to recover assets allegedly bought with looted money, alleges that $4.5 billion was stolen from 1MDB.

The scandal contributed to the shock election defeat in May of Najib, who set up and oversaw the fund.

Since his election defeat, the former leader has been arrested and charged over the scandal but is out on bail. He denies any wrongdoing.

AMMAN, Jordan – President Rodrigo Duterte blamed the tariffs slapped by US President Donald Trump on certain global products for the rising prices of goods in the Philippines, in a rare jab at the American leader that he described as his close friend.

President Rodrigo Duterte blamed the tariffs slapped by US President Donald Trump on certain global products for the rising prices of goods in the Philippines, in a rare jab at the American leader that he described as his close friend.

“Inflation is because of Trump. When Trump raised his tarrif and other banned items, that’s when things started to look bad,” Duterte said in a speech before the Filipino community here on Friday night. Mr. Duterte is currently in Jordan for an official visit.

“I am not aplologizing. There is really inflation in the Philippines and we are trying to control it,” he added.

The President said he refers to his economic managers to find ways to mitigate the effects of soaring inflation, which hit a high rate of 6.4 percent in over nine years this August.

Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque earlier said that Filipinos have no reason to panic despite the record-high inflation as he assured the public that the government is “addressing it.”

The Philippine Statistics Authority on Wednesday announced that inflation rose to a nine-year high of 6.4 percent in August compared to 5.7 percent in August as the President is on a foreign trip here in Jordan.

Duterte called for a Cabinet meeting on Thursday night to tackle ways to mitigate inflation.

Man charged with Australia family murders

Perth, Australia

A young man has been charged with the murder of five people including three toddlers, Australian police said Monday, after a mass killing at a suburban home.

Police found the remains of three young girls, as well as those of their mother and grandmother at an unassuming detached family home near the southwestern city of Perth on Sunday.

The gruesome discovery came after a 24-year-old man, who has not been named, walked into a police station in a remote mining area some 1,500 kilometres (900 miles) north of the city.

He was due to appear in court via video link later Monday.

The family has not been formally identified, but Australian media named the mother as Mara Quinn, a fly-in fly-out worker — an employee who is flown in temporarily to a remote location for a period of time — for a West Australian mining firm.

Her children were named as three and a half-year-old daughter Charlotte and two-year-old twins Alice and Beatrix, and her mother as Beverley Quinn, 74.

The police did not release details about when and how they were killed, or the family’s relationship with the man.

A Facebook profile believed to be Mara Quinn’s showed her cradling a newborn in her arms, with a man beside her, and stated that she was engaged in August 2014.

A real estate listing showed a modest three-bedroom house and a standalone garage.

“She was pretty unlucky in love before she met him,” a friend told Fairfax Media. “So (when they got together) it was like ‘yay, now she gets to start a family’.”

‘Silence for a week’

A neighbour told ABC he had returned from a holiday to “silence in the street”.

“We noticed that the house next door was pretty quiet, which was unusual,” Richard Fairbrother, who lives next door to the family’s house, said.

“We could hear and see the kids playing in the backyard quite often.”

Other neighbours spoke of a shocked community that had been close, calm and peaceful.

Mass killings are rare in Australia, but this appears to be the third such family tragedy to hit Western Australia state in recent months.

In July a man allegedly killed his mother and two siblings. A grandfather shot dead his wife, daughter and her four children in murder-suicide in May.

Beijing

China’s top legislator voiced hope that North Korea and the United States will implement their nuclear summit agreement as he met with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, Chinese state media said Monday.

Li Zhanshu, sent by President Xi Jinping to attend North Korea’s 70th anniversary parade on Sunday, said China was committed to the goal of denuclearisation of the Korean peninsula, the Xinhua news agency said.

“We have high regards of the efforts the DPRK has made towards regional peace and stability,” Li was quoted as saying, using the acronym for the North’s official name.

Xinhua said Li also conveyed his hope that North Korea and the United States could implement the outcome of the June summit between Kim and President Donald Trump in Singapore and work to preserve peaceful talks.

Trump and Kim reached a vague agreement to work towards the denuclearisation of the Korean peninsula, but there has been little movement since and Trump has accused Beijing — North Korea’s sole major ally — of complicating Washington’s relationship with Pyongyang.

But North Korea refrained from displaying its intercontinental missiles during Sunday’s parade, a conspicuous absence that Trump hailed as “a big and very positive statement”.

For his part, Kim said North Korea adheres to the consensus reached at the summit and “has taken measures in this regard while the US side should take corresponding actions to jointly promote the political settlement of the Korean peninsula issue,” according to Xinhua.

Li also handed a signed letter from Xi to Kim.

In the missive, according to Xinhua, Xi wrote that it “is an unswerving policy of the CPC (Communist Party of China) and the Chinese government to safeguard, consolidate and develop China-DPRK relations”.

Relations between Pyongyang and Beijing have gone through a rough patch in recent years, with China backing United Nations sanctions to punish its Cold War-era ally for its nuclear activities.

But ties have recently improved as Kim met Xi in China three times this year.

Although the Chinese leader has yet to return the favour with his own visit to Pyongyang, he sent a major figure in Li to represent him. Li is a member of the Communist Party’s seven-person Politburo Standing Committee, China’s ruling council.

Meghan Markle and her love for animals has helped endear her to the Queen — according to Prince Harry, his grandmother’s corgis show more warmth to the former actress than they do to him.

The Duchess of Sussex had been mom to two rescued dogs: Bogart, a Labrador-shepherd, and Guy, a beagle. Sadly, her move to the United Kingdom meant leaving Bogart in Toronto with trusted friends, supposedly due to his age and health.

Image: Instagram/@guybeagle

Guy the beagle was once an abandoned dog in Kentucky who ended up in a kill shelter. To avoid meeting his demise, a rescue group brought him to Canada. Meghan was then based in Toronto for the TV show “Suits”. After their fortuitous meeting, the rest was history.

Guy has since been living the high life on royal grounds, and an inside look is set to be released in the children’s book “His Royal Dogness, Guy the Beagle: The Rebarkable True Story of Meghan Markle’s Rescue Dog.”

“Practically overnight, Guy goes from wags to riches. But does this backwoods beagle have what it takes to be welcomed into the royal family?” says a synopsis on Amazon, where the book sells for $17.99 (P970).

According to Hello Giggles, some of Guy’s escapades in England include learning to pee on the other side of the fire hydrant and chomping on Prince Charles’ sandwich.

Guy has been adorably rendered with a majestic crown in an illustration by EG Keller, an American children’s book illustrator known for his work in watercolor.

The beagle narrates his story through Mike Brumm, “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert” writer and producer, and Camille March, a former publishing professional who has also owned a beagle.

Another book, “The Duchess and Guy: A Rescue-to-Royalty Puppy Love Story” by Nancy Furstinger, is set to be released in January 2019. Some of the proceeds will aid in dog rescues. Furstinger has authored nearly a hundred books on animals.

Guy has recently gained a new brother in a rescued black Labrador named Oz. Perhaps their adventures are for another book.

Seoul invites 9 parliamentary leaders to Pyongyang summit

Seoul

The presidential office Cheong Wa Dae on Monday asked the parliamentary speaker and heads of all five political parties in South Korea to accompany President Moon Jae-in on his upcoming trip to the North.

The invitation came from Moon’s chief of staff Im Jong-seok, who currently heads a summit preparation committee.

The Moon-Kim summit is set to be held in Pyongyang from Sept. 18-20.

“The preparation committee for the 2018 Pyongyang summit seeks to invite National Assembly Speaker Moon Hee-sang and vice speakers … as special parliamentary delegates,” Im told a press briefing.

The heads of all five major political parties, including Lee Hae-chan of the ruling Democratic Party and Kim Byong-jun of the main opposition Liberty Korea Party, have also been invited.

Those invited also include Rep. Kang Seok-ho of the main opposition party, who currently serves as the chairman of the parliamentary committee on foreign affairs and unification.

“Up until now, the government has been at the center of South-North exchanges, but many have long suggested that inter-Korean exchanges would become much more stabilized when the parliament becomes a part of such efforts,” Im said of the reason for inviting the parliamentary leaders to the inter-Korean summit.

The invitation came hours after the rival parties failed to reach an agreement on the government-requested ratification of an inter-Korean agreement reached at the first Moon-Kim summit in the border village of Panmunjom on April 27.

Instead, the ruling and opposition parties agreed to review the request after the third Moon-Kim summit. The leaders last met in Panmunjom on May 26.

Meanwhile, Im said the government will soon finalize its list of delegates to the Pyongyang summit, adding the two Koreas have agreed to keep the South Korean delegation at about 200 people.

Lao PM holds up Nam Theun 2 dam as successful hydro model

The government views the Nam Theun 2 hydropower project in Khammuan province as a successful model as it seeks to strengthen the country’s electricity generation policy, according to Prime Minister Thongloun Sisoulith.

“I think that in the future, the government will refer to the success of the Nam Theun 2 power plant, as it is a good model. [The government] is now inspecting and evaluating [hydropower] projects to ensure that they are the best possible,” he said, when meeting with World Bank officials last Friday.

The World Bank-backed Nam Theun 2 dam, which became operational in 2010, has an installed capacity of 1,070 MW and can generate 6,000 GWh a year, about 95 percent of which is sold to Thailand.

The US$1.3 billion hydropower project, which also received support from the Asian Development Bank (ADB) and other international organisations, is based on a multiple-purpose concept, which acknowledges the need to balance economic gain with environmental protection and rural community development.

In the meeting with World Bank officials, Prime Minister Thongloun said these important aspects of the project made the Nam Theun 2 a top quality and sustainable hydropower plant.

Mr Thongloun said the Nam Theun 2 hydro plant benefits Laos in multiple ways. On the one hand, it provides a significant amount of revenue to the Lao government while, on the other hand, it allocates a portion of its income to finance rural community development, protection of the environment and forests, biodiversity and watershed management, to ensure the sustainability of the project.

“The use of the revenue generated by the sale of electricity was discussed at the start of the project,” Mr Thongloun told the meeting, adding that when the dam became operational, the expenditure plan was carried out in accordance with the project concession.

The prime minister said that another positive aspect of the plant was good water resource management, which does not only aim to supply water for electricity generation but also for agriculture.

When asked about the major achievements of the Nam Theun 2 project, Mr Thongloun said it was about turning challenges into opportunity, adding that the overcoming of obstacles made this dam the best in Laos and perhaps in the world. He said this achievement was possible thanks to the active coordination and close cooperation between the government and its development partners, including international financial institutions and the Nam Theun 2 Power Company. Extensive studies on the possible impacts of the project, and extensive debate on the project’s design, development and operation also played a significant part in its success.

The shareholders in the project are Electricité de France (40 percent), Lao Holding State Enterprise (25 percent), and Electricity Generating Public Company Limited (35 percent).

Cambodia’s opposition leader Kem Sokha was released from jail early Monday a year after he was detained on treason charges, his lawyer said, as the country’s strongman ruler loosens his grip on opponents after sweeping one-sided elections.

“Kem Sokha returned home at 3:30am,” his lawyer Chan Chen told AFP, after his release from a remote border prison.

A court official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said Kem Sokha was freed on bail although his lawyer could not immediately confirm the conditions of his release.

He was arrested on September 3, 2017, and accused of treason as Cambodia’s premier Hun Sen deepened his pre-election crackdown on political rivals.

The charges against Kem Sokha were widely seen as politically motivated and just two months later his Opposition Cambodia National Rescue Party — the only serious rival to Hun Sen – was disbanded by a court.

That left the ruling party to win all 125 parliamentary seats in July’s election, turning the country into a one-party state and extending Hun Sen’s 33-year stay in office.

Since the polls Hun Sen has begun to release critics from jail, a common relaxation of his grip on power that has followed election wins throughout his time in office.

KUANTAN, Malaysia – A medical graduate on housemanship has given his primary school teacher a new lease of life by donating 67% of his liver to save the teacher. Transplant operation performed in Singapore. Both donor and recipient are doing well.

Chen Ze Rong, A doctor-to-be who is currently on housemanship donates 67 % of his liver to save his primary school teacher.

The 25-year-old graduate of a medical school is a student of Kong Min Chinese primary school in Kuantan. He was taught by science teacher Liang Feng Pin. Liang’s only daughter Zheng Zi Jing is also Chen’s classmate when both were in year five.

After knowing Liang was facing liver problem and needed to undergo liver transplant, Chen became the donor without hesitation.

The transplant was completed in Singapore. Currently both Chen and Liang are in hospital.

A posting by Nanyang Siang Pau Medical Foundation on Facebook said Chen’s jaundice reading was slightly high. Situation would improve once the liver starts to grow.

“Chen is breathing on his own without relying on oxygen. He can sit on the bed but unable to skip pain. He should be able to discharge from hospital in a week’s time.”

Blood test result showed Chen’s liver is functioning in Liang’s body.

“This means no rejection after transplant. Liang currently is undergoing dialysis treatment until her condition is stabilised.”

If Liang’s condition is stable, she can be discharged one month later. The first six month is the most critical period for her.

Zheng said the mother is currently relying on breathing machine but doctors said her condition is good.  Apart from companying her mother, Zheng also visited Chen in the ward.

On the night after the transplant surgery was completed, Zheng wrote on her Facebook to thank her good friend.

She touched on her close relationship with the mother and friendship with Chen after discovering the power of love in life.

She said Chen does not only give her mother love but a miracle for her. The donation has led her feel that life is full of hope.

“The support of Chen and his family finally let me realise that love does not only confine within family. Love is everywhere if one is genuine. “

She said her primary school mate is friendly and down to earth. Their friendship has blossomed due to a group of common friends. When they turned up gathering for the last time, Chen was still asking her about her mother’s blood group.

“I have never thought he would be willing to go this far to be the one who saves my mother’s life.”
