Would-be NASA intern loses gig after vulgar tweet to NASA alum Homer Hickam, reports say

Breaking News August 24, 2018 01:00

A woman may have lost a NASA internship following a profanity-laced back-and-forth with a user on Twitter. That user? Famed former NASA engineer and current space council adviser Homer Hickam, reported USA Today online.

The exchange, reportedly captured in screenshots that rocketed across social media, began when a user identified as Naomi H. (@NaomiH_official) made an announcement to the world:

“Everyone shut the f— up,” she tweeted, Newsweek and Buzzfeed News report, citing images of since-removed tweets. “I got accepted for a NASA internship.”

The online reported that after a Twitter user notes Naomi’s “language,” Naomi replies with a sexually vulgar tweet not at all suitable for publication. “I’m working at NASA,” Naomi concludes.

The user Naomi told off is Homer Hickam, the former NASA engineer and inspiration of the 1999 film “October Sky,” based on his memoir.

“And I am on the National Space Council that oversees NASA,” Hickam replies, referencing his appointment to the advisory group earlier this year.

“Later, I learned she had lost her offer for an internship with NASA,” Hickam said Tuesday in a post on his blog, according to Newsweek. (The post appeared to be deleted as of Wednesday, though it still appeared archived on Google.)

In the post, Hickam said he takes no offense at the ‘f-word,’ but sought to warn her that NASA might. And while Hickam did not seek to influence the internship and had no authority to do so, according to the post, use of the NASA hashtag later alerted the agency to the irreverent tweets.

Naomi and Hickam later exchanged apologies, according to the blog, and Hickam, citing her resume, is now doing “all I can” to secure her a role in the aerospace industry.

Hickam declined to comment on the matter in an email to USA TODAY, and Naomi had made her tweets private as of Wednesday. Her bio: “Taking a break from Twitter for a while.”

NASA was not immediately available to offer comment.

Lobby groups oppose plan to hike import tax

The Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Kadin) and the Indonesian Employers Association (Apindo) have opposed a government plan to increase import tax on goods that can be produced locally, saying it could backfire on the economy.

“The Indonesian manufacturing industry is starting to grow. Don’t let [import tax] be counterproductive to efforts to encourage exports,” kontan.co.id recently reported Kadin deputy chairman for international relationship Shinta W. Kamdani as saying.

The government plans to impose additional import tax of 7.5 per cent on goods that have domestic equivalents to reduce the current account deficit. The government is currently reviewing 500 imported items that may be subject to the higher import tax.

Shinta said imposing a higher import tax would push up prices, including consumer goods prices, because raw materials used to produce some consumer goods were imported.

She said such a move could be counterproductive in the government’s effort to access new markets through free trade agreements (FTAs) and to attract more investors. – The Jakarta Post

Malaysia, China ink deal on palm oil-based products

Malaysia’s Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad witnessed the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) between Sime Darby Plantation Berhad, and China National Cereals, Oils and Foodstuffs Corporation (Cofco) on the last day of his five-day visit to China.

Cofco will be working together with Sime Darby in a joint venture to set up plants in Malaysia to produce palm oil-based products for the Chinese market, reported Malaysiakini news website.

Malaysia’s Sime Darby is one of the world’s largest oil palm planters by land size. Cofco is one of China’s state-owned food processing and agriculture supply chain company.

The signing of the MoU between Sime Darby executive deputy chairperson and managing director Mohamad Bakke Salleh and Cofco Oils and Oilseeds chairperson Dong Wei was held at China World Summit Wing Hotel in Beijing. – The Straits Times

NAIA-BGC link to start next year

An elevated toll road linking Bonifacio Global City (BGC) in Taguig and Manila’s Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) might soon be underway.

Alex Bote, who heads the Public Private Partnership (PPP) service of the Department of Public Works and Highways, said in an interview that San Miguel Corp.’s offer to extend its Naia Expressway project all the way to BGC was currently being studied.

“It’s already been submitted,” Bote said, while explaining that the project was an extension of the Naia Expressway and not an unsolicited proposal.

He did not give added details, but noted that they expected the project to start “definitely by next year.”

SMC revealed its plans to extend the 7.7 kilometre Naia Expressway last year. This is seen to ease traffic on the Sales Bridge and cut travel time from the Coastal Road, the Naia passenger terminals and SM Mall of Asia to BGC.

This will reduce road congestion around the areas of Magallanes and EdsaPasay. SMC noted that it would also build new ramps from the Naia Terminal 1 and 2 areas all the way to SM Sucat, where it connects to the C5 extension project. – The Philippine Daily Inquirer

Core inflation rises 1.9% in Singapore

CORE inflation in Singapore rose to 1.9 per cent in July, although the consumer price index (CPI) for all items remained unchanged from the previous month, according to the latest figures from the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) and Ministry of Trade and Industry (MTI).

This is because steeper electricity and gas prices were offset by private road transport costs and lower services inflation, they said in a joint statement yesterday.

Looking ahead, however, imported inflation is likely to rise with an uptick in global oil prices since the start of 2018. Global food commodity costs are also projected to increase as demand strengthens.

Domestic sources of inflation are expected to grow too, alongside a faster pace of wage growth and pickup in domestic demand.

However, the authorities added: “The extent of consumer price increases will remain moderate, as retail rents have stayed relatively subdued and firms’ pricing power may be constrained by market competition.”

The cost of living has been a prime concern among Singaporeans, with Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong acknowledging citizens’ worries in his National Day Rally speech last Sunday.

Price increases, the concerns of young families and those caring for both children and elderly parents, as well as lifestyle changes, are among reasons that people are feeling the pinch, he added, pledging that the Government will do its part to ease concerns.

According to the MAS and MTI, electricity and gas prices spiked 12.7 per cent in July – up from a 3.7 per cent increase the month before – due to an upward revision of electricity tariffs after a pick-up in global oil prices.

CAMBODIAN mobile banking services provider Wing (Cambodia) Ltd Specialised Bank has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Capital Management Solutions (CMS) to provide the real estate industry with financial services.

Reflecting on the positive growth trend in the country’s property market, Wing chief executive Jojo Malolos said experts have estimated that at least 13,000 condominium units will be available in Cambodia by the end of the year.

He said the MoU would bring convenience to the sector, facilitating investments in both commercial and retail space.

“This year also marks a 5 per cent increase in demand for condo units, which shows that the country is moving toward investing in high-rise properties in addition to traditional housing and land. “We aim to make it more convenient for CMS’ customers to pay for their property rentals, and other related services digitally through Wing,” he said.

He said CMS customers were required to register for a Wing account by downloading the WingMoney app or going to one of its 5,000 agents to open an account.

Malolos assured new customers that the company’s app could also be used to top-up phone credit, pay bills, make online payments and transfer funds.

Battening down for 35% rupiah plunge

INDONESIA’S proposed 2019 state budget is designed to face a worst-case scenario of rupiah depreciation of up to 35 per cent – 18,000 to the US dollar – particularly related to anticipated ballooning government debt due to the weakening of the currency.

Finance Ministry budgetary director general Askolani said the shock estimation was a stress test that could be used by the government to test the debt ratio under the worst conditions.

“It means if the worst occurs, we are prepared,” said Askolani as reported by kontan.co.id yesterday.

He said if the rupiah weakened to 18,000 per US dollar, government debt would still be controllable. This year’s average rupiah exchange rate is projected at 13,973 to the US dollar.

The government believes debt to gross domestic product (GDP) will be between 29.5 and 31 per cent, with a possible increase of 5 per cent.

The government considers a debt to GDP ratio lower than 40 per cent safe, considering Malaysia debt to GDP ratio had reached 65 percent.

The government also estimates that debt instalment payments to the GDP ratio will be 1.5 to 2 per cent in the period between 2019 and 2022. Meanwhile, debt payment to debt outstanding ratio is estimated at 5.5 to 6.5 per cent.

Meanwhile, Bank Indonesia deputy governor Dody Budi Waluyo said the possibility of the rupiah depreciating by 35 percent was very small, considering that the rupiah’s depreciation from January to date reached only 7 per cent.

Laos announces adoption of new Asean tariff code

THE Ministry of Finance in Laos has announced it has adopted a new Asean tariff code, giving a signal that Laos is ready to become part of the single regional market of 600 million consumers.

According to the announcement, posted on the Lao Trade Portal, an official website that provides information on trade services, Laos has put into practice the Asean Harmonised Tariff Nomenclature 2017 since May.

The adoption of the Asean tariff code is in line with the Lao government’s policy to implement regional obligations to which the country is committed, the finance ministry said in its announcement.

The updated version of the Asean tariff code provides a clearer definition of goods and services in which Asean member countries are trading. This will make it easier for Lao customs officials to implement the government policy to facilitate cross-border trade and become part of the regional market.

In the past, customs officials faced difficulties in levying tariffs and taxes on particular goods from Asean countries as there was no single definition of the goods and tariff code. In the past, Asean member countries defined tariff codes differently.

Observers said the establishment of the single Asean tariff code is considered the most important mechanism and tool to facilitate the free flow of goods within the grouping. Customs officials in the region have agreed on the single definition of the goods, they added.

Asean agreed to establish the region as a single market where goods and services are allowed to flow freely. However, the free movement of goods will be impossible without a single tariff code, they said.

They said the adoption of the single tariff code will help the region to end non-tariff barriers and facilitate the free flow of goods.

Asean has also agreed to eliminate tariffs as part of efforts to promote free trade.

Laos has already eliminated tariffs on a number of goods but as one of the newest Asean members, the country has been allowed to extend its tariffs on strategic goods for a while.

Over the past few years, the Lao government has been active in integrating its economy into the region and the world, hoping this will attract foreign investment so that the country can generate jobs and greater income.

The Lao government believes foreign investment is one of the driving forces of economic growth and poverty reduction. The country became a member of WTO in 2013. Over the past few years, Laos has adjusted its laws and economic policies to meet international standards.

Thailand is taking the second position most welcomed for Chinese tourists after Japan, according to Hotels.com’s survey.

For Chinese visitors, key reasons for feeling welcomed in Thailand is due to the widespread acceptance of Chinese mobile wallets (64 per cent), sufficient translations/signage (41 per cent), and ease of information (40 per cent).

The survey conducted by Hotels.com showed that the new generation of Chinese travellers’ needs and preferences have changed.

Tour groups have grown to be outdated as Chinese travellers are growing to enjoy independent travel in Thailand.

They are more likely to travel on a free-and-easy basis, thanks to Thailand’s local delicacies, ease of visa application, quality of accommodation, and shopping paradise that greatly attracted Chinese travelers.

Thailand is still one of the destinations where they prefer to travel; with its famous local craft and products that Chinese travelers could shop (56 per cent) as well as number of unique and remarkable places to visit – such the Royal Palace is the number one landmark for Chinese visitors.

With a 12-per cent increase from 2017, Chinese travelers are important for Thailand tourism industry. A better understanding of evolving Chinese travelers’ need should put Thailand tourism industry on the pulse of the country’s biggest group of customers. Thailand tourism industry should maximize the benefits of understanding the changing taste of Chinese travelers, according to Hotels.com’s statement.

According to the research from Hotels.com, new and distant locations are on the agenda for Chinese travelers.  While more than one third (37 per cent) of travelers still intend to visit countries they have been to before, they will go to different cities.  Key locations in Asia are top of the list for these travelers such as Singapore, Japan and South Korea.

Chinese millennials born after 1990 are pushing the boundaries of international travel, increasing their travel expenditure in the past year by a staggering 80 per cent to fund social media-influenced trips full of edgy experiences, high tech accommodation, exotic delicacies and taboo ticket-items.

Keen to get down with authentic experiences, Chinese travelers are putting their money where their mouth is when it comes to spending choice – tasting exotic local delicacies (69 per cent) and scouring the streets for authentic local items (43 per cent) over shopping for luxury items (38 per cent).

Star-struck by global pop-culture, film and television (62 per cent) are now the main sources of inspiration for Chinese millennial travelers, playing a key role in attracting them away from Asian destinations, and to more far flung parts of the world for their thrills and frills.

Long-haul destinations will be this year’s trend for Chinese travelers.  While Asia continues to be a popular destination, with 49 per cent planning to travel to Asian destinations during the next 12 months, far-flung destinations in Europe, Africa and the Middle East are the top new destinations for more than half of travelers for future travel.

Government and hoteliers can fill in the gap to improve any other important factors that Chinese travelers are looking for such as; advancement of QR code scan via WeChat, improvement of accommodation facilities; local transport arrangements, high speed Wi-Fi and customer services, and reservation methods for local experiences and activities. Those are key considerations that Chinese travelers expect when they are travelling to other countries.

Travel brag moments and selfies were a huge part of the Chinese millennial travel experience in 2017, with 65 per cent using the reverse camera angle to boost those likes and build their social brand. More than half (56 per cent) of travelers said they used selfies to express feelings. Social media (52 per cent) and video sharing (51 per cent) are also important to all age groups when deciding where to travel.

Nelson Allen, General Manager, Asia Pacific of the Hotels.com brand, comments: “While millennials were at the helm of social media influence and trends, the report found no generation was free from social networking’s undeniable draw.

“52 per cent of Chinese travelers overall were wooed by the power of the news feed, and a third of the older generation reported their travel decisions and behavior were influenced by their digitally-connected children”.

Johan Svanstrom, President of the Hotels.com brand, comments: “Every globe-trotter likes to feel welcome in a new country – it’s no secret we all crave human connection which is especially true when we’re in a new environment. We know from the CITM report Chinese travelers feel comfortable and most welcome in destinations when shop assistants speak Mandarin, Chinese mobile wallet is accepted, and there is signage they can understand.

China investigates top Buddhist leader for sexual assault

ASEAN+ August 23, 2018 16:43

The former head of China’s government-run Buddhist association is under criminal investigation for alleged sexual assault, the country’s top religious authority said Thursday.

Xuecheng, a Communist Party member and abbot of Beijing’s Longquan Monastery, is one of the most prominent figures to face accusations in China’s growing #MeToo movement.

He stepped down earlier this month after a report by fellow monks accused him of sexual and financial improprieties.

In the 95-page report that circulated online late last month, two monks accused Xuecheng of sending explicit text messages to at least six women, threatening or cajoling them to have sex with him, claiming it was a part of their Buddhist studies.

The National Religious Affairs Authority said it had confirmed Xuecheng had sent “harassing messages”, adding that authorities had begun a criminal investigation into the report’s charges of sexual assault.

Investigators had also uncovered evidence that the Longquan Monastery had violated national financial regulations, it added in a statement on its web site.

Xuecheng, 51, stepped down at a meeting of the Buddhist Association of China earlier this month following the allegations.

The abbot is also a member of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference, a top advisory board.

A prominent personality in Chinese Buddhist life with a social media following of millions, Xuecheng’s Weibo account has been silent since August 1, when he posted a statement rejecting allegations of sexual misconduct.

In their report, the two monks, who are no longer members of the monastery, said four women gave in to Xuecheng’s demands.

One of the authors said on social media that he was compelled to speak out after the victims were ignored by authorities who said they could not investigate the matter.

There is no legal definition of sexual harassment in China and no national regulations on how to handle sexual assault cases in schools and workplaces.

The report and posts about it have been taken down or censored on social media. Both men were also asked to leave the monastery after news of the report broke.

Located on the outskirts of Beijing, Longquan Monastery has made headlines for combining Buddhism with modern technology, launching last year a two-foot high robot monk that dispenses mantras and karmic advice.

The #MeToo movement ignited in China earlier this year with more women starting to open up about sexual assaults, especially on university campuses.

Unlike in the West, where #MeToo has forced resignations and sparked widespread public debate, authorities in China have sought to control the discussion, sometimes allowing and at other times censoring social media commentary.

The Philippines is concerned about China’s possible deployment of nuclear weapons in its outposts in the heavily disputed South China Sea.

“We are concerned about the entry of any and all nuclear weapons into the Philippine territory because our Constitution provides that we are a nuclear-free zone,” Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque said on Thursday.

Roque also cited that there is an Asean treaty declaring the whole Asean as a nuclear-free zone.

“We are concerned about the possibility that any foreign power be it American, Russian, Chinese may bring nuclear warheads into our territory and into Asean, which is declared as a nuclear-free zone,” he said.

A  United States’ Department of Defense had earlier warned that China may deploy nuclear weapons in the South China Sea, where the Asian superpower has a sweeping claim.

While Roque said that the warning was a mere “US observation,” he said the Philippines was against any deployment of nuclear weapons in areas declared as nuclear-free zones.

“The important point to underscore is we have a nuclear-free policy and that should be applied to all countries, including the Americans, because the Americans have been using nuclear-powered [weapons] and have been stationing warships with nuclear capability as well,” he said.

“So the concern is against all possible nuclear-carrying vessels from all countries,” he said.

Asked if the government would verify the US warning, he said, “That’s a US observation. We are not in the position to verify that. And as we correctly said it is even in the nature of speculation. It is a possibility according to American sources so we leave it at that.”

“You know, if we could, we will try verifying it, try approaching any of these suspected nuclear warheads,” he added with hesitation, saying “I don’t think they can be boarded.”

They also arrested four men during the four raids at several locations on the island on Tuesday (Aug 21).  Bukit Aman NCID deputy director Deputy Comm Datuk Kang Chez Chiang said the raids were conducted by police officers from Bukit Aman and Penang with cooperation from the Thailand Narcotics Operations Bureau and the Thailand Office of Narcotics Control Board.

“We found 506kg of methamphetamine packed as tea leaves in 473 packages, and 26,000 ecstasy pills in 13 packages,” he said at a press conference at the Penang police headquarters on Thursday (Aug 23). “All four suspects have criminal records, while two of them tested positive for drugs,” he said.

“The suspects have been remanded for six days ending Aug 27,” he said.
