AS AN OLD saying goes, agriculture is a trade “that solely depends on the sky”.

Most livestock and field crops rely heavily on the weather for their comfort, and providing water and energy. But China’s more than 1.3 billion residents, a growing number of whom are becoming mid-income earners, are building up such an appetite that farmers are having to change the way they grow and sell food.

In order to transform an ancient business that was largely run using intuition, the modern answer is technology. Artificial intelligence has come to the farmyard, helping to ensure the country’s increasing numbers of pigs remain active and crop yields grow ever larger.

This is the case for Wang Degen and his company Tequ Group, a major hog farm in Southwest China’s Sichuan province. The company aims to breed 10 million pigs by 2020, in what Wang said is “a scale that no ordinary automation system could cope with, let alone a human system”.

The winning recipe lies in the vast array of AI solutions offered by the cloud computing arm of Alibaba Group Holding Ltd. Using smart sensors and data analytics, Alibaba Cloud can help Tequ’s farm to monitor each hog’s activity and log their state of health in real time.

Dubbed ET Agricultural Brain, it is the same technology that the tech giant has been applying to optimize urban transportation and run its e-commerce platforms more smoothly. Now Alibaba Cloud is training its sights on agriculture to provide efficient and technically advanced farm management approaches.

Replacing RFID (radio frequency identification) tags that are time-consuming to manage, the latest solution is to use machine vision technology, tracking pigs using overhead cameras that identify numbers tattooed onto their bodies.

At a basic level, this system will be able to count pigs and piglets, but Alibaba also intends to offer more sophisticated analysis. Visual recognition and real-time environmental monitoring have been deployed on the platform to gather individual data on each hog’s daily movements, as well as analysing growth indicators, pregnancies and other health-related matters.

The smart sensors alert farm operators if the body temperature of the pig warrants medical attention, meaning farmers can detect sick pigs before the illness spreads or becomes fatal. With this technology, the farm’s pigs per sow per year (PSY)-the standard metric used to measure pork production-is expected to increase to 32 from 20 to 25 last year.

That would put China on a par with advanced pig-farming countries such as the US.

China churned out 53.4 million metric tons of pork last year, followed by the European Union and the United States, according to the USDA Foreign Agricultural Service in May.

The country is also the top pork consumer, representing half of total global consumption last year, according to Singapore-based DBS Bank in a report.

It also projected China’s annual pork consumption would hit 58.1 million tons by 2021, up from 54.5 million in 2016.

“After just several months’ implementation of the ET Agricultural Brain, the PSY at Tequ has seen a mild increase to an average of 22 to 25, up from last year’s 20 to 25,” said the farming group’s senior researcher, Su Zhipeng.

The system can even ensure that piglets are not just alive, but healthy too. It automatically charts a workout regimen for hogs on a daily basis and tracks their running distance, duration and speed. Pigs that have not fulfilled their daily exercise target will be singled out and deprived of the right to rest until they meet the minimum running distance.

The technology follows Chinese consumers jumping on the healthy-eating bandwagon, as shoppers and diners alike demand higher-quality and safer meat as part of healthier lifestyles.

Consultancy Mintel Group Ltd found in a study last year that Chinese people tend to favor pork products that bear QR codes on their packaging. These allow customers to scan the code to learn more about the pigs’ treatment and other related information.

“We want a pig that can run 200 kilometers instead of weighing 200 kilograms,” said Simon Hu, president of Alibaba Cloud. “It is the pig’s exercise volume that is shaping up to be the new standard for pork quality.”

Wang touted the technology that helps realise the “true industrialisation”of pig farming. He said it brings a new level of interactive automation and upgrades the whole supply chain, especially sales and logistics.

“The agriculture and animal husbandry industry is a strategic sector and it affects billions of lives across China,” said Hu. “ET Agricultural Brain can be adopted across many other sectors, including forestry and fisheries, helping enterprises and individual producers to increase efficiency and improve the quality of production, and providing greener and healthier options for consumers.”

Pig farmers are not the only beneficiaries of the technological leap. Early adopters of the ET Agricultural Brain include Haisheng Group, a Shaanxi province-based agriculture firm that operates nearly 40 orchards, each larger than 2,667 hectares.

Details related to the production of apples, oranges, berries and cherries can be recorded digitally via a management app installed on a smartphone.

Each fruit tree will soon bear a unique QR code, which farmers can scan and track its inputs, including water, fertilizer and pesticide.

China in the loop on ultra-fast links

SAN FRANCISCO

IT TAKES several hours to travel by car from Hollywood to the Napa Valley in northern California, considered one of the world’s premier wine regions.

But if the dream of business magnate and Tesla chief executive officer Elon Musk is realised, travel time between Los Angeles and San Francisco — which is just next to the wine county — will be reduced to just 35 minutes.

Musk wants to build a hyperloop rail system that would operate at a top speed of 1,200 kilometre per hour.

Ambitious as this project is, Chinese scientists are planning an ultra-fast rail transportation system of their own that would run at up to 1,500 km/h.

This would make it possible to enjoy wine in the Napa Valley at midday and, for example, watch a baseball game just three hours later in New York City.

Zhang Weihua and his team at Southwest Jiaotong University in Chengdu, capital of Sichuan province in central China, are building a high-technology tube transportation system to test methods of carrying commuters and cargo at ultra-fast speeds. This will be tested at speeds of up to 1,500 km/h. The top speed is expected to be reached in April 2021.

The hyperloop idea was first proposed by Musk in 2013, but was met with a mix of enthusiasm and scepticism.

Unlike ordinary trains and tracks exposed to the atmosphere, trains operating on this system would run inside a partial vacuum. The prototype loop can raise a train above ground and enable it to run inside the tube without air resistance.

Other countries, such as France and Japan, are also speeding up their research on ultra-fast trains.

“Speed has become the focus of competition,” Zhang said.

Once it has been completed — in less than three years according to Zhang — all types of ultra-high-speed Maglev transportation tests can be carried out, including those on high- and low-temperature superconductor Maglevs.

A prototype was built to one-tenth the scale of the proposed train, he said.

SAMSUNG Bioepis said yesterday that it plans to soon start phase 1 clinical trials for its first new drug candidate in development with Japan’s Takeda Pharmaceutical, setting a fresh milestone in the South Korean drugmaker’s push into new drug development.

The therapeutic candidate, SB26, also known as TAK-671, is an ulinastatin-Fc fusion protein to treat severe acute pancreatitis. It is the first result of the new drug development collaboration partnership signed by the two companies in August 2017.

The upcoming clinical trials will be held in the US only, a Samsung Bioepis spokesperson confirmed, though the exact start date for the trials remain undisclosed.

The study – randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled and involving single and multiple dose escalation – will assess the safety, tolerability and pharmacokinetics of intravenous injections of SB26 in healthy volunteers.

The results of the study are expected in |the third quarter of 2020, Samsung Bioepis said.

“The upcoming clinical trial marks a major milestone for those of us at Samsung |Bioepis, as SB26 is set to become the first novel biologic candidate from our company to enter clinical trials,” Kim Chul, senior vice president and head of the clinical sciences division at Samsung Bioepis, said in a statement.

“Acute pancreatitis remains one of the most common gastrointestinal conditions, affecting more patients every year,” Kim said.

“While mild acute pancreatitis is more easily treatable, severe acute pancreatitis, which affects approximately 20 percent of patients suffering from acute pancreatitis, can often be fatal.

“Unfortunately, treatment options |remain extremely limited. By leveraging |the unique strengths of our partnership |with Takeda, we hope to rapidly advance |SB26 through clinical trials.”

Pancreatitis is a condition caused by an inflammation in the pancreas, an organ located in the upper abdomen behind the stomach that produces digestive enzymes and hormones.

Pancreatitis can either be acute, occurring suddenly and potentially being life-threatening, or chronic, lingering over the course of several years.

Biosimilars

Samsung Bioepis was founded in 2012 as a joint venture between Samsung BioLogics and US-based Biogen, focusing primarily on developing biosimilars – lower-cost copies of live cell biologic drugs whose patents have expired – for global markets.

Last year, Samsung Bioepis forayed into the realm of new drug development through a “risk-sharing partnership” that combines Bioepis’ speedy biologics development platform with Takeda’s drug development expertise to co-fund and collaboratively develop innovative therapies.

MOBILE apps are increasing in popularity among Chinese users, not only for business, but also in their daily lives.

According to the China Internet Network Information Centre, China had 753 million mobile internet users at the end of 2017.

Industry analysts said that the popularity of apps also reflects the accelerated proliferation of mobile devices in China, transforming the country into an app-driven society.

According to a recent survey by China Youth Daily, more than 40 per cent of people surveyed discussed the World Cup in Russia on social networking apps with their friends.

Among those surveyed, 66.8 per cent watched live broadcasts on mobile apps or TVs and 61 per cent made predictions about games online.

“The increasing use of apps to watch the games was a distinctive feature of the 2018 World Cup compared with the previous one,” said Zhang Baoyi, director of the sociology institute at Tianjin Academy of Social Sciences.

Mobile Internet users accounted for more than 97.5 per cent of the total number of internet users last year, up from 95.1 per cent the previous year.

“Growth of China’s app economy is accelerating, putting it within striking distance of economies like Japan and the United States, said Bertrand Schmitt, CEO and co-founder of App Annie, a mobile analytics institute.

According to the institute, the country’s app economy has outpaced the majority of markets globally, be it the overall time spent using apps, the number of apps used or the amount of money spent on them.

It noted that in the fourth quarter of 2017 alone, Chinese app users spent roughly 225 billion hours using apps, which is 4.5 times longer than in India, the next largest market, which clocked close to 50 billion hours in 2017.

“The market scale is expanding continuously. People tend to spend more for app services,” he added.

The tax bureau in Shenzhen and Tencent announced last week that China’s first blockchain-based invoice had been issued to a local restaurant.

According to the tax bureau, companies can submit applications for invoices and declare tax on the blockchain platform supported by Tencent, which will automatically generate invoices after transactions are completed.

Cai Yige, manager of Tencent’s blockchain business, said the distributed ledger, a core technology of blockchain, enabled secure sharing and storage of transaction records among all parties in the invoicing process, making it impossible to tamper with invoice information.

The bureau and Tencent launched an innovation lab in May, to explore solutions to optimize tax services and prevent risks using cloud computing, artificial intelligence, blockchain and big data.

Nine people were killed and 30 injured in a blaze that broke out early Monday at a hospice for the terminally ill near Taiwan’s capital Taipei, fire officials said.

All of the 44 people inside, including 33 patients, were evacuated after the fire started at the hospice on the seventh floor of a nine-storey government hospital in New Taipei city.

Sixteen patients had cardiac arrests and seven were revived.

The other nine died with the cause of death given as smoke inhalation, according to the local fire department.

New Taipei fire department official Hung Liang-chien told reporters an initial probe showed that the fire was likely caused by the short circuit of an electrical device.

“We are clarifying whether it’s the power cable of the hospital’s electric bed or an air cushion bed brought in by relatives” of a patient, he said.

One caregiver working in the hospice reported seeing a spark on the bed where the fire started, according to local media.

Local fire chief Huang Te-ching earlier denied reports the sprinkler system had malfunctioned.

“The sprinkler device was on but there’s some distance between its location and where the fire started so the fire couldn’t be immediately put out,” he told reporters.

He added that authorities were also examining why there was a nine minute delay by the hospital in reporting the fire.

CCTV footage on local media showed staff rushing through the hospice corridors, carrying patients out in their arms or in wheelchairs to evacuate them after the fire broke out.

The injured were rushed to several nearby hospitals, with 11 listed as in serious condition.

Premier William Lai apologised to the public and gave his condolences over the tragedy.

“We will review the cause of the incident to prevent a similar situation from happening again,” he said.

There have been nine hospital fires in Taiwan in the past decade claiming 37 lives.

The worst was in 2012 when a cancer patient set a fire in a nursing facility in southern Tainan city that killed 13 people and injured 60 others. The arsonist was sentenced to death.

Dushanbe, Tajikistan

Up to 16 people, including 13 climbers and 3 helicopter crew, are unaccounted for after a “hard landing” in the mountains of Tajikistan, the Central Asian country’s emergency committee said Monday.

The accident took place on Sunday at 1130 GMT, the committee said, and two helicopters have been sent on a rescue and recovery mission to the crash site.

The emergency committee said the climbers were returning from an expedition up the Ismoili Somoni mountain, once known as Peak Communism and the highest mountain in the former Soviet Union.

The statement did not identify the climbers or the crew.

The accident comes two weeks after four Western cyclists were killed in an attack initially reported as a hit-and-run road accident, striking a blow to the country’s emerging tourism sector.

The Islamic State group said it carried out the attack — ramming the tourists with a car and attacking them with knives — but the authoritarian government refused to acknowledge the group’s claim.

US President Donald Trump endorsed calls Sunday for a boycott of tariff-hit Harley-Davidson over its plans to move production of its iconic American motorcycles out of the country, including building a plant in Thailand.

“Many @harleydavidson owners plan to boycott the company if manufacturing moves overseas. Great!” Trump tweeted.

“Most other companies are coming in our direction, including Harley competitors.

A really bad move!” Trump has taken it personally since Wisconsin-based manufacturer — once a presidential favorite — announced on Monday it is moving some production out of the US.

Harley-Davidson was targeted with EU tariffs after Trump imposed stiff duties on European steel and aluminum.

An array of US companies have complained they are being hurt by the administration’s tariff policies. But Trump has treated the issue as a loyalty test. “I’ve done so much for you, and then this,” Trump tweeted earlier this week.

“Other companies are coming back where they belong! We won’t forget, and neither will your customers or your now very HAPPY competitors!” Last year, Harley-Davidson announced it would build a plant in Thailand after Trump pulled out of the Trans Pacific Partnership (TPP) trade deal, which would have abolished tariffs on their motorcycles across 40 percent of the world’s economy.

The company has repeatedly described the Thailand factory, along with other overseas production, as vital to its long-term need to boost foreign markets to make up for sluggish sales in the US. In January, Harley-Davidson announced it would close its Kansas City, Missouri assembly plant and consolidate jobs in York, Pennsylvania.

“A Harley-Davidson should never be built in another country-never!” Trump said earlier on Twitter.

Myanmar asks Bangladesh to stop aid to stranded Rohingya

Breaking News August 13, 2018 01:00

By AFP

Dhaka – Myanmar has asked Bangladesh to stop providing aid to 6,000 Rohingya stranded on the border between the two countries since a military crackdown prompted a mass exodus of the Muslim minority last year, the foreign ministry in Dhaka said.

The group refused to enter Bangladesh in the months during and after Myanmar’s military campaign, which drove 700,000 other Rohingya across the frontier in an act the United Nations, United States and other western countries have condemned as ethnic cleansing.

They are now stuck in a narrow “no mans land” relying on international aid sent by Bangladesh.

Myanmar called for the aid to be halted in talks between Bangladeshi Foreign Minister A.H. Mahmood Ali and Myanmar’s top diplomatic envoy, Kyaw Tint Swe, in Myanmar’s capital Napyidaw on Friday, the foreign ministry said late Saturday.

“Myanmar particularly requested Bangladesh to stop providing humanitarian assistance to those people… and proposed to arrange supply of humanitarian assistance from Myanmar side,” the ministry said.

Bangladesh made no commitment but “responded positively” to Myanmar’s proposal to conduct a survey of the no mans land area, the ministry said.

A Myanmar minister on a visit to the strip of land earlier this year warned the Rohingya refugees that they will face “consequences” if they do not take up a Myanmar offer to return.

Dil Mohammad, a Rohingya community leader among the group on the border, told AFP the latest pressure from Myanmar to vacate the no mans land area would add to their hardship.

“There will be uncertainty whether Myanmar will regularly provide us with food and humanitarian assistance. If Bangladesh stops helping us from their side, we will have a huge problem,” he said.

Kyaw Tint Swe, a minister in the office of Myanmar’s de facto leader Aung San Suu Kyi, also made a new pledge to speed up implementation of a repatriation deal agreed with Bangladesh in November.

Myanmar committed to taking the Rohingya back in that deal, but none have returned. Rohingya leaders say that those sheltering at overflowing refugee camps in Bangladesh will not go back until their safety is guaranteed.

The majority of Myanmar’s Rohingya fled the country following a crackdown that started last August after attacks by Rohingya militants on police posts.

They have joined about 300,000 in camps around Bangladesh’s Cox’s Bazar district who fled earlier waves of violence in Myanmar.

Myanmar views the Rohingya as illegal migrants and has long denied them citizenship and basic rights, despite their long roots in the country’s west.

Urgent : China threatens PH military aircraft in latest flight over South China Sea

The Chinese Navy has threatened a Philippine military aircraft in its most recently reported flight over China’s man-made islands in the South China Sea, telling it to leave or else it will face responsibility.

“Philippine military aircraft! I’m warning you again. Leave immediately or you will bear responsibility for all the consequences!” a voice was heard as saying during a reconnaissance flight of the US Navy’s P-8A Poseidon last Friday.

Television networks BBC and CNN were given the rare opportunity to join the surveillance flight and witness China’s expansion in the Spratly Islands from a view of 16,500 feet.

BBC was able to pick up the radio warning of the Chinese to the Philippine military aircraft supposedly flying nearby. It noted the difference in tone with the ones issued to the US.

“We overhear China warning a Philippine aircraft. This time, they are not as nearly as polite,” BBC’s Rupert Wingfield- Hayes said in his report.

READ: PH airs concern over Chinese radio warnings

The US plane flew over four of China’s artificial islands — Kagitingan (Fiery Cross), Zamora (Subi Reef), Panganiban Reef (Mischief), and Mabini (Johnson) Reef.

The report said the US Navy was warned by China at least five times within the flight. But China appeared to have issued milder warnings to the US: “Leave immediately and keep out to avoid any misunderstanding.”

During the warnings, the US consistently replied with: “This is United States naval aircraft conducting lawful military activities beyond the national airspace of any coastal state and exercising these rights is guaranteed by international law. I am operating with due regard for the rights and duties of all states.”

The US pilot on board Lt. Matt Johnson said the warnings were a “routine occurrence” and it has no effect on their operations.

Nine vehicles were also spotted moving around in one of the reefs during the surveillance flight.

Philippine defense and military officials did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Euan Graham, director of the International Security Program at the Australian-based Lowy Institute, also noted the “striking” difference of China’s approach to the Philippines and US.

“The more menacing tone of PLA [People’s Liberation Army] warning to Philippine aircraft, compared to US aircraft, is striking. Calibrated to intimidate smaller, weaker states?” he wrote on his Twitter account.

Acting Supreme Court Chief Justice Antonio Carpio, a staunch critic of President Rodrigo Duterte’s foreign policy on China, said the Philippines should file a diplomatic protest over the incident.

“Subi Reef, a low-tide feature, is part of the territorial sea of Pagasa (Thitu) as ruled by the arbitral tribunal. The airspace above Subi Reef is part of the territorial airspace of Pagasa,” he told Inquirer.net.

Pagasa is the biggest island occupied by the Philippines in the Spratlys, and the only one inhabited by civilians. It is located less than 20 nautical miles from Zamora Reef.

Paganiban (Mischief) Reef, meanwhile, is a low-tide feature part of the Philippines’ exclusive economic zone as ruled by the international court, Carpio argued.

“Only the Philippines can build structures on Mischief Reef. There is freedom of overflight in the airspace above Mischief Reef,” he said.

China claims most parts of the South China Sea, including waters close to the shores of the Philippines, Brunei, Malaysia and Vietnam.

The ruling on a challenge brought by the Philippines, the UN-backed Permanent Court of Arbitration in The Hague invalidated China’s sweeping claim in July 2016.

But the Duterte government set aside the ruling in exchange for economic opportunities and friendly ties with China.

Early this year, the Inquirer published close-up surveillance images of China’s reclaimed features now equipped with runways, radar towers, missile shelters and other military facilities. The photos showed that the bases are almost operational and awaiting the deployment of personnel and aircraft.

China insists that the facilities on its man-made islands in the Spratlys are primarily for civilian purposes and they have “indisputable sovereignty” over the area.
