US model Chrissy Teigen and Australian actress Teresa Palmer were among the alarmed tourists in Bali who took to social media to share their experiences of the unfolding earthquake that affected the resort island on Sunday evening.

Teigen has been holidaying in Bali with her husband, singer John Legend, and both of their children, Luna and Miles. “Bali. Trembling. So Long,” Teigen tweeted, followed by a flurry of updates as aftershocks followed later that evening.

Bali sits to the west of neighboring Lombok island, West Nusa Tenggara, where a magnitude 7 earthquake struck on Sunday evening, leading to a tsunami warning that has now been lifted.

The quake killed 82 people and wounded hundreds more, National Disaster Agency spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho said early on Monday according to AFP, with most of the fatalities occurring in the mountainous area of northern Lombok.

As of Monday morning, the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) said around 132 aftershocks had occurred on Lombok.

Australian actress Teresa Palmer was also on the resort island when the trembles occurred over the weekend and posted on Twitter saying it was one of the strongest earthquakes she had ever felt.

“Woah! Anyone else feel that earthquake in Bali? Hope everyone is okay. Staying in a treehouse and we were SWAYING!,” Palmer said in one of several tweets she shared on the situation.

In another tweet replying to Teigen that evening, Palmer echoed the model’s account of having felt a “violent” shake. The actress added that she was staying in Ubud, and that her kids had slept through the occurrence.

Indonesian actor couple Andrew White and Nana Mirdad shared images on Instagram Stories of the inside of a home they are staying at while visiting family in Bali.

Andrew shared a video showing the living room in slight disarray with the caption “Earthquake knocking things over.”

“We just had an earthquake up here, we’re in Bali. All the candles have fallen over, it’s broken down,” Andrew can be heard narrating the clip from the evening.

In the next story, the actor shared another video showing the pool water sloshing from the quake.

Andrew’s wife, Nana Mirdad, meanwhile shared a video with her children, Jason and Sarah, who she said had cried earlier as the three of them walked outside.

“Oh my God, this is the biggest earthquake we’ve felt while staying in Bali, right honey?” Nana said while embracing her daughter.

Five killed, dozens shot in Chicago ‘violent night’

ASEAN+ August 06, 2018 13:28

Washington – Forty-four people were shot across the Midwestern US city of Chicago Sunday, US media reported, with five killed in a wave of violence police branded “totally unacceptable.”

Chicago Police chief of patrol Fred Waller told a press conference Sunday afternoon some of the shootings were “targeted” and related to gang conflicts.

“The city of Chicago experienced a violent night. Incidents of either random or targeted shooting on our streets is totally unacceptable,” he said.

CNN reported multiple shootings took place between midnight and 2:00 pm local time — with 10 taking place in just three hours from 1:30 am.

Gunmen targeted groups including one gathering of people who had attended a funeral repast, police said, adding that one of the injured victims was an 11-year-old boy.

Chicago experienced a near 20-year record number of murders in 2016, prompting President Donald Trump to regularly single out the city for criticism.

But Waller said so far this year, there has been a reduction in shootings of over 30 percent in Chicago, while murders are down by 25 percent.

“That’s not a victory by any means, or any stretch” he said. “But we continue to head in the right direction.”

He also said more than 5,500 illegal guns had been confiscated from the city’s streets.

“I promise this city, we won’t be defeated,” he vowed during the press conference.

“We all live in this city. We all want this city to be safer.”

The death toll of a powerful earthquake in West Nusa Tenggara and Bali on Sunday evening has climbed to 91, the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) announced in a press conference in Jakarta on Monday.

North Lombok regency suffered the largest number of fatalities with 72 people killed, while Bali recorded two fatalities. Most victims were killed from falling buildings, the BNPB said.

The government has also declared an emergency status for East and North Lombok regencies until Aug. 11, said BNPB spokesperson Sutopo Purwo Nugroho.

As of Monday afternoon, 209 people have been reported injured and thousands of buildings, including schools and hospitals, damaged.

North and East Lombok saw the most damages, with 80 percent of the buildings in several areas completely demolished by the 7-magnitude earthquake.

The earthquake on Sunday evening was the main shock, said Sutopo, while the smaller one on July 29 was the “foreshock”.

The National Search and Rescue Agency (Basarnas) has been evacuating nearly 1,000 foreign and local tourists from the popular three Gili islands in Lombok, West Nusa Tenggara (NTB), following a magnitude 7 earthquake that hit the region on Sunday evening.

Through Twitter account @humas_basarnas, the agency reported that a total of 358 tourists – comprising 148 foreign visitors and 210 local visitors – had been evacuated to Bangsal port in the northern part of Lombok Island as of 11:15 a.m. on Monday. One of the local visitors died in the disaster.

“The evacuation process is being carried out in stages using inflatable boats to bigger ships,” the Basarnas’ account tweeted.

National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho said an estimated 1,000 tourists were still waiting to be evacuated from the three islands, namely Gili Trawangan, Gili Air and Gili Meno. Through his Twitter account he shared a video on the process of evacuation in one of the islands, but he did not specify which island.

The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) reported that as of Monday morning, around 132 aftershocks have occurred on Lombok Island, West Nusa Tenggara (NTB), following a 7-magnitude earthquake that left 82 people dead and hundreds other injured.

BMKG head Dwikorita Karnawati said earthquake, which took place on Sunday evening and was centered in the slope of Mount Rinjani, was the main shock following several tremors last week.

“Because the epicenter of [the recent] earthquake was located close to the one that occurred on July 29, the BMKG declared that Sunday evening’s incident was the main shock of a string of tremors,” Dwikorita said as quoted by kompas.com.

A 6.4-magnitude earthquake rocked the island on Sunday last week, claiming 17 lives. The West Nusa Tenggara administration declared a 14-day state of emergency following the incident.

NTB governor Muhammad Zainul Majdi, known as Tuan Guru Bajang (TGB), has instructed that all schools in the region be closed on Monday so that authorities can ensure their buildings’ security.

“I also instruct all medical personnel on Lombok Island to provide health services to all affected residents,” TGB said.

“Personnel from the National Disaster Mitigation Agency [BNPB], the police, the Indonesian Military [TNI] and search and rescue teams will also work hand-in-hand to reach victims in the most affected area in North and East Lombok,” he added.

Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf’s (PTI) parliamentary committee meets here on Monday (today) to nominate party chairman Imran Khan as prime minister.

The parliamentary committee is also expected to decide the names of federal cabinet members in the meeting to be chaired by Mr Khan. The PTI chief had earlier decided to keep his federal cabinet small with an initial strength of 15 to 20 federal ministers.

“The meeting will endorse the nomination of Imran Khan as next prime minister of the country,” PTI spokesman Fawad Chaudhry confirmed to Dawn when contacted on Sunday.

Asked if the names of cabinet members would also be announced on Monday, the spokesman said the committee was likely to finalise the names of the cabinet members.

PTI sources said the party was also considering one federal ministry for the Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan (MQM-P) after the party with its six MNAs-elect inked an agreement with the PTI to support its government at the Centre.

Besides, it was learnt that the PTI leadership was considering the names of Aleem Khan, Fawad Chaudhry, Dr Yasmin Rashid and Sibtain Khan for the slot of Punjab chief minister.

For the office of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa chief minister, former CM Pervez Khattak and another PTI leader Atif Khan are said to be strong candidates.

Pervez Elahi, vice president of the Pakistan Muslim League-Q, was being considered for the position of Punjab Assembly speaker after the PML-Q decided to become PTI’s ally both at the Centre and in Punjab.

Govt formation

The PTI spokesman on Sunday claimed that the number of the party’s members in the National Assembly had reached 174 and 186 in the Punjab Assembly.

With 174 seats at the Centre and 186 in Punjab, the PTI was in a comfortable position to form its federal and provincial governments, he said.

He added that four seats of Balochistan National Party (BNP) had not been included in the 174 seats so far. “I have not included BNP seats in the figure of 174, because our negotiations with the party are still in progress. So far the BNP has not officially announced its support to the PTI,” he added.

The PTI spokesman claimed that the party would easily form its government at the Centre and two provinces, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Punjab.

Responding to a question about PTI’s decision to go into an appeal against the Lahore High Court (LHC) decision for recounting of votes in the Lahore (NA-131) constituency, the spokesman said the court has no right to order for the recount, as it was the responsibility of the ECP. The court had stopped the ECP from issuing notification of Imran’s victory against PML-N’s Khawaja Saad Rafique’s and ordered recounting of votes.

The PTI spokesman said vote recount was under way in 48 constituencies, which was the highest number of constituencies where the ECP had started recounting votes in the electoral history of Pakistan.

The spokesman said the PTI wanted finality of the election results. It was for this reason that the decision was made to challenge the high court’s decision of recounting, he said. In this constituency, he added, Mr Khan had defeated Mr Rafique by a few hundred votes.

Maleeha meets Imran

Earlier, Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations Maleeha Lodhi met the PTI chief at his Banigala residence on Sunday and congratulated him on his party’s performance in the recent elections.

Japanese ambassador, the British envoy and other foreign dignitaries had also visited the PTI chief in recent days. The envoys of China, Saudi Arabia and the UAE had called on the PTI chairman since his party emerged as the winner of the July 25 polls. Besides Afghan president, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi had also telephoned Imran Khan to congratulate him over his party’s victory.

Beijing warns of protectionism, militarization

Growing protectionist sentiment and the fomenting of militarization by outside forces are two major negative factors plaguing East Asia, warned State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi.

Countries from outside the region, particularly the United States, have frequently mobilized massive strategic weapons in the region, especially in the South China Sea, to flex their muscles, Wang told reporters in Singapore on Saturday.

This “constitutes a security threat and pressure on the region’s countries, including China, and has become the biggest driving force behind militarization in the region”, Wang said on the sidelines of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations Foreign Ministers’ Meeting.

Earlier on Saturday, the final day of a series of meetings, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said at a news conference in Singapore that he has recently “raised concerns about Chinese militarization of the South China Sea”.

However, the ASEAN-China foreign ministers’ meeting “welcomed the conduct of the ASEAN-China Maritime Exercise in 2018 to enhance confidence and trust among the ASEAN and Chinese navies”, said a statement by the Singapore side, host of the event, on Saturday.

“Ignoring China and ASEAN’s efforts, and progress made in regional peace and South China Sea stability, is at the very least disrespectful, and irresponsible, to countries in the region,” Wang said.

Given the increasing military threats and pressure, China should exercise its rights to self-defense conferred by international law, Wang said.

Labeling self-defense as “militarization” is a distortion of the truth, Wang added.

In response to Pompeo’s comment that the US “seek(s) partnership, not dominance” in the region, Wang said it is a rare position made by the US given the country’s record so far, and the US is expected to honor its words through actions.

Speaking on the progress achieved at the annual meetings this year, Wang noted that the foreign ministers of the 10 Southeast Asian countries plus China, Japan and the Republic of Korea, agreed on speeding up negotiations of the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership trade deal.

The senior diplomats agreed that their countries should jointly champion free trade, oppose protectionism and advance the buildup of the proposed East Asia Economic Community, Wang said.

Fifty metres of riverbank in Chroy Changvar district collapsed on Saturday amid rising water levels in the Mekong and Tonle Sap rivers which have caused the Cambodian capital’s riverside regions to flood.

According to Klang Huot, the district governor, traffic has been impacted by the collapse in Prek Takong village.

Huot said that the incident occurred when portions of a 20-metre tall bank gave way.

“We ordered the departments of transportation and water resources to work together on the repair,” he said, adding that there hasn’t been any additional erosion damage.

He said that after the collapse, authorities used stones to reinforce the surrounding area as a temporary measure, but they are waiting for ministry officials to provide a permanent solution.

Brak Sophea, whose home is less than a metre from the collapsed section, had her family move out with their belongings and currently live with a relative. Five other families did the same.

“I heard the collapse. We don’t dare stay at home,” she said.

Sophea noticed that about 100 metres of riverbank have collapsed so far, destroying two homes already.

ARF ministers call on NK to fulfill commitment to complete denuclearization

The foreign ministers from the Association of Southeast Asian Nations and 17 other countries urged North Korea to fulfill its commitment to complete denuclearization during their Singapore talks last week, their chair statement showed Monday.

Singapore, this year’s chair of the annual ASEAN Regional Forum, published its statement summarizing the foreign ministers’ meeting, which took place Saturday. The annual ARF is the sole regional forum in which the North’s top diplomat participates.

“The ministers urged all concerned parties to continue working towards the realization of lasting peace and stability on a denuclearized Korean Peninsula,” the statement reads.

“They also urged the DPRK to fulfill its stated commitment to complete denuclearization and its pledge to refrain from further nuclear and missile tests,” it added, referring to North Korea’s formal name, the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea.

The statement also noted that the ministers welcomed the April and May inter-Korean summits at the border truce village of Panmunjom and the historic June Singapore summit between US President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un.

At the summits, Kim committed himself to the complete denuclearization of the peninsula, which was seen by optimists as a positive sign but by skeptics as yet another vague pledge with no specifics as for how and when to achieve that goal.

The statement, in addition, said that during the ARF talks, some ministers expressed their readiness to engage in dialogue with the North to resolve other outstanding issues, including humanitarian concerns.

Contrary to the widespread expectations, the chairman’s statement did not include the phrase, “complete, verifiable and irreversible denuclearization,” apparently in reflection of Pyongyang’s aversion to the term.

Meanwhile, the ministers at the forum voiced concerns over land reclamations in the South China Sea, an apparent allusion to Beijing’s construction of artificial islands capable of hosting military installations.

“The ministers discussed the matters relating to the South China Sea and took note of some concerns on the land reclamations and activities in the area, which have eroded trust and confidence, increased tensions and may undermine peace, security and stability in the region,” the statement said.

“They reaffirmed the need to enhance mutual trust and confidence, exercise self-restraint in the conduct of activities and avoid actions that may further complicate the situation, and pursue peaceful resolution of disputes in accordance with international law,” it added.

Based on its growing economic and military heft, China has been suspected of seeking to expand its sphere of influence through man-made islands in the strategically vital waterway — or farther into the Pacific. China’s claims to the lion’s share of the South China Sea continue despite a 2016 ruling by an international tribunal in The Hague against them.

Members of a Singapore delegation in Lombok, Indonesia, for a security conference are safe after Sunday’s magnitude 7.0 earthquake, said Law and Home Affairs Minister K. Shanmugam.

In a Facebook post at about 9.55pm, the Minister said that he was working on his laptop in his room on the 10th floor of a building when the quake struck.

“Suddenly the room shook violently, walls cracked, it was quite impossible to stand up. Heard screams,” he added.

Mr Shanmugam left the hotel room and made his way downstairs while the building was still shaking, adding that the power in the building had gone out for a while.

The delegation, which has 11 members, was in Lombok for a sub-regional counter-terrorism meeting co-hosted by Indonesia and Australia.

Other countries that are involved in the meeting include Malaysia, Brunei and New Zealand. The conference ends on Monday.

He noted that while the Singapore delegation was safe, there were casualties among other guests.

Australia’s Home Affairs minister Peter Dutton, who was there for the same meeting, told the Sydney Morning Heraldthat the quake “was powerful enough to put us on the floor”.

“We were up on the 12th floor, the lights went out and we were able to evacuate,” Mr Dutton said. “I think we were pretty lucky in the end.”

Mr Dutton and his delegation, along with his New Zealand counterpart, have since been evacuated from their hotel and are standing by to be evacuated to Bali, where the quake’s effects are thought to be less severe.

Mr Shanmugam advised Singaporeans in Lombok to contact the Singapore embassy in Jakarta at +62-(811)-863-348.

“Hoping that there are no serious injuries and that everyone will be ok,” he said.

Indonesia’s resort islands of Bali and Lombok were hit by a magnitude 7.0 earthquake on Sunday.

The quake, which struck at a depth of 15km off the north coast of Lombok, prompted a tsunami warning which was later lifted at 8.25pm local time.

Singaporean tourist Ramya Ragupathi, 37, was just finishing a massage in Ubud when the quake struck at 7.45pm local time.

“I was a little shaken. It was quite intense. I felt really woozy, and at first thought it was because of the massage. But then the receptionist got everyone to move and evacuate,” she said.

Ms Ragupathi, who owns a gluten-free food firm in Singapore, also said that local staff at her accommodation stayed calm and were very helpful even as the tremors were felt.

In a high alert advisory, Singapore’s National Environment Agency said there are no reports of tremors in Singapore and that Singapore is unlikely to be affected by any tsunami that may be generated.

In response to The Straits Times’ queries, Singapore Airlines said Singapore Airlines flights to Bali and SilkAir flights to Lombok are currently due to operate as scheduled.

“As the situation remains fluid, customers are advised to check the status of their flights on our website,” the spokesman said.

A Jetstar spokesman said the airline was monitoring the situation closely, and that its flights to and from Denpasar were operating as scheduled.

“Should there be any changes, we will advise our passengers as soon as possible,” they added.

Changi Airport Group said on Sunday evening that it was monitoring the situation.
