Porn star ‘free’ to discuss ties with Trump

Washington

An American porn star who claims to have had an affair with Donald Trump before he became president now feels free to tell her story, her manager said Wednesday.

After Trump’s longtime personal lawyer admitted paying $130,000 to Stormy Daniels shortly before the 2016 election, the actress’s manager suggested a non-disclosure agreement had been broken.

“Everything is off now, and Stormy is going to tell her story,” manager Gina Rodriguez told US media.

Trump’s aide and special counsel Michael Cohen has refused to say why he paid Daniels the vast sum but was not, as he claims, reimbursed by the “Trump Organization nor the Trump campaign.”

Trump declined to comment on the issue. The White House has dodged questions about whether allegations of an affair are true, claiming the matter was dealt with during the campaign.

It has also referred any questions about the payment to Cohen.

Vice President Mike Pence described suggestions of an affair as “the latest baseless allegations against the president.”

Last month, celebrity magazine In Touch published a 2011 interview with Daniels — whose real name is Stephanie Clifford — in which she details having “textbook generic” sex with Trump.

She recalled meeting Trump at a celebrity golf tournament in 2006, shortly after the president’s wife Melania Trump gave birth to their son Barron.

Since the alleged signing of a confidentiality agreement, Daniels has denied the affair took place and then appeared to deny making the denial.

The allegations bubbled away before the election but have resurfaced because of a legal case that claims Cohen’s payment may have broken campaign finance laws.

The lawyer said he did nothing wrong.

“The payment to Ms Clifford was lawful, and was not a campaign contribution or a campaign expenditure by anyone,” Cohen said.

He declined to say whether Trump was aware of the payment.

Watchdog group Common Cause launched the legal action, saying they have “reason to believe” that money was “an unreported in-kind expenditure… because the funds were paid for the purpose of influencing the 2016 presidential general.”

The alleged violation of federal campaign finance law “undermines the integrity of democracy in the United States,” a letter signed by Paul Ryan of Common Cause reads.

– ‘Make America Horny Again’ –

Daniels has been taking advantage of her newfound notoriety.

Last month, she appeared at the Trophy Club strip club in South Carolina as part of a “Make America Horny Again” tour — a tongue-in-cheek reference to Trump’s “Make America Great Again” campaign slogan — that will also reportedly take her to several other states over the next few months.

In a recent appearance on the late night TV talk show “Jimmy Kimmel Live” — right after Trump delivered his State of the Union address — Daniels deflected questions about the alleged affair and whether she had signed a non-disclosure agreement.

“You can’t say whether you have a non-disclosure agreement. But if you didn’t have a non-disclosure agreement, you most certainly could say, ‘I don’t have a non-disclosure agreement.’ Yes?” Kimmel asked.

“You’re so smart, Jimmy,” Daniels answered.

Later in the interview, Kimmel asked, “Have you ever made love to someone whose name rhymes with Lonald Lump?”

“I’ll call you whatever you want me to call you, baby,” Daniels responded.

17 killed in Florida school shooting by former student: sheriff

Breaking News February 15, 2018 06:56

Parkland, United States

A former student armed with an AR-15 rifle opened fire at a Florida high school on Wednesday, killing at least 17 people, officials said, in a harrowing shooting spree that saw terrified students hiding in closets and under desks as they texted for help.

Broward County Sheriff Scott Israel identified the gunman as Nikolas Cruz, 19, a former student at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland who had been expelled for “disciplinary reasons.”

Cruz was arrested without incident in the nearby town of Coral Springs after the Valentine’s Day rampage and taken to hospital with minor injuries, the sheriff said.

“We have already begun to dissect his websites and things on social media that he was on and some of the things… are very, very disturbing,” Israel said.

“He had countless magazines, multiple magazines, and at this point, we believe he had one AR-15 rifle,” the sheriff added.

Israel said he was uncertain about the exact number of people injured, but at least 14 were taken to hospital and two had died there of their wounds.

The shooting, one of nearly 20 since the start of the year, will once again throw the spotlight on the epidemic of gun violence in the United States and the ready accessibility of weapons in a country with 33,000 gun-related deaths annually.

“This is a terrible day for Parkland,” Israel said, speaking of the city of about 30,000 people, located 50 miles (80 kilometers) north of Miami.

“My very own triplets went to that school.”

A teacher at the school told the Miami Herald that Cruz had been identified previously as a potential threat to his classmates.

“We were told last year that he wasn’t allowed on campus with a backpack on him,” math teacher Jim Gard said. “There were problems with him last year threatening students, and I guess he was asked to leave campus.”

A law enforcement source told CBS News that the gunman pulled a fire alarm before opening fire, but Israel said he could not confirm that report.

‘Very scared’

Parkland Mayor Christine Hunschofsky told CNN she had spoken to a number of students after the shooting erupted shortly after 2:00 pm (1900 GMT).

“They were very scared,” she said. “And almost in shock when they came out.”

Asked about security, the Parkland mayor said a police officer is always stationed at the school and there was a “single point of entry.”

Television images showed students, some with their hands in the air, being led out of the school by heavily armed police officers and an armored vehicle filled with a SWAT team on the scene.

One injured victim was seen being placed into an ambulance on a stretcher.

Police officers in helmets, bulletproof vests and armed with automatic weapons could be seen stationed at several points around the sprawling school complex, which serves nearly 3,000 students.

“Just a horrible day for us,” said the superintendent of the county’s school district, Robert Runcie.

The FBI said it was assisting local law enforcement with the investigation.

‘Everyone started running’

Student Jeiella Dodoo told CBS News that she and her schoolmates had evacuated their classroom calmly after hearing what they thought had been a routine fire alarm.

“The alarm went off so we had to evacuate from our classes,” she said. “Then we heard gunshots.

“I heard about six gunshots,” she said, “and then some people started running and then everyone started running because we were like ‘If it’s real, then just run.'”

Teacher Melissa Falkowski told US networks that she had helped 19 students squeeze into a closet with her.

“We were in there for probably 40 minutes. We were locked in the closet until SWAT came and got us,” she told CNN.

No child should ‘feel unsafe’

President Donald Trump offered his “prayers and condolences to the families of the victims.

“No child, teacher or anyone else should ever feel unsafe in an American school,” he said on Twitter.

Since January 2013, there have been at least 291 school shootings across the country — an average of about one school shooting a week, according to Everytown for Gun Safety, a non-profit group that advocates for gun control.

Since the 2012 massacre at the Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut, where 20 children and six adults were shot dead, warning procedures and emergency drills have multiplied at US schools.

The goal is to teach school children how to react to a shooter who opens fire at random.

“It is pretty clear that we’re failing our kids here,” said Falkowski, the teacher who helped shield her students from harm in a closet.

“I’m not saying the solution is one thing or another, but this does not happen in other countries the way it happens here.”

Foreign firms dominate VN’s fast-growing animal feed industry

HANOI

THE ANIMAL feed industry of Vietnam , despite being among the world’s fastest-growing by scale and output, is dominated by foreign firms while local producers are struggling to compete.

According to Nguyen Xuan Duong, deputy director of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development’s Department of Livestock Production, the animal feed industry maintained two-digit growth in the past two decades, with the output jumping from 400,000 tonnes in 1993 to more than 23 million tonnes in 2016.

Vietnam is today the leading country in Asean and the 10th in the world in animal feed production.

However, the rapid expansion of foreign producers in Vietnam is posing threat to local firms.

Recently, Korea’s CJ Group opened its fifth animal feed plant in Vietnam and is planning to open the sixth one this year.

A US$15-million plant with an annual output of 500,000 tonnes in the northern province of Hai Durong was recently opened by Singapore’s HAID, which has invested in six plants throughout the country already.

Indonesia’s Java Pelletising Factory also invested 135 billion dong ($5.97 million) in building a plant in Vietnam .

Thailand’s CP Group owns four animal feed plants in Vietnam, with an annual capacity of more than 400,000 tonnes each. Uni-President from Taiwan, besides owning three plants producing fish feed of 300,000 tonnes annually, has invested $20 million to build another 100,000-tonne capacity plant in Quang Nam Province.

Hoang Huong Giang from the ministry’s Animal Husbandry Department said there were 218 animal feed plants Vietnam, with an average monthly capacity of 28,200 tonnes. Of these, 71 are foreign firms, with an average monthly capacity of more than 15,700 tonnes and hold a market share of some 65 per cent.

Le Ba Lich , chairman of the Animal Husbandry Association of Vietnam, said local animal feed producers outnumbered foreign producers but held a market share of just some 30 per cent.

Lich said the market share of local producers was in danger of narrowing down even as local producers were expanding. “It is important to adjust strategies to compete,” he said.

Many local producers are striving to cut costs and lower prices by selling directly to farmers instead of going through agents, but some have not been able to avoid losses.

Lich said foreign firms had stronger financial capacity, experience, modern production line and especially appropriate distribution strategies to expand their market.

Singapore economy loses momentum as exports ease

SINGAPORE

SINGAPORE’S economy lost some of its momentum in the fourth quarter and the government sees growth moderating slightly this year as an export boom in 2017 eases.

Gross domestic product rose at a seasonally adjusted, annualised rate of 2.1 percent from prior three months, trade ministry said Wednesday.

Bloomberg survey median was 2 per cent, while government’s previous projection was 2.8 per cent. GDP expanded 3.6 per cent in the fourth quarter from the same period in 2016; median estimate was for 2.9 per cent.

While manufacturing in the trade-reliant economy was boosted last year by a surge in electronics exports, output has weakened recently as demand moderated.

Even with that easing, the economy posted full-year growth of 3.6 per cent in 2017, and is set to expand slightly above the middle of the 1.5-3.5 per cent forecast range this year, the trade ministry said.

“The manufacturing sector is likely to continue to expand and provide support to growth in the overall economy,” the ministry said in a statement. “In particular, the electronics and precision engineering clusters are projected to sustain a healthy, though more moderate, pace of growth in 2018.”

The generally robust outlook gives policy makers room to announce expected tax increases in the February 19 budget to help pay for increased spending on health and retirement benefits as the population ages rapidly.

The outlook also gives the Monetary Authority of Singapore scope to tighten policy this year after opening the door to a possible move in their last decision in October. The central bank’s next policy announcement is scheduled for April.

Jacqueline Loh, deputy managing director of the MAS, told reporters yesterday that the central bank hasn’t changed core or headline inflation forecasts since October and that the “monetary policy stance remains as announced then.”

The finance and transportation industries are set to benefit from firm external demand this year, and growth will probably broaden out to domestic-focused sectors, such as retail and food services as employment picks up, the ministry said. Construction and the marine and offshore engineering cluster will remain weak in 2018, it said.

Philippine electronics exports hit all-time high in 2017

MANILA

PHILIPPINE ELECTRONICS exports, which yearly account for at least half of outbound goods, reached $32.7 billion last year, marking an all-time record high, officials have announced.

The Semiconductor and Electronics Industries in the Philippines Foundation Inc (Seipi) said the latest figure marked an 11-per cent growth from the industry’s exports in 2016.

“That really is significant because it is the highest level of exports we’ve achieved since the beginning of the electronics industry,” said Seipi president Danilo Lachica. It has been close to a decade since the industry reached a peak in terms of export receipts. Lachica said the industry exported $31 billion in 2010, a few years after hitting the same level in 2007. Since then, he said the industry’s performance had been “erratic.”

In total, the industry accounted for 52 per cent of the country’s merchandise exports last year. According to the Philippine Statistics Authority, total merchandise exports reached $62.87 billion, a 9.5 per cent increase from 2016.

However, Seipi is dampening its expectations for the year ahead, targeting only a 6 percent growth for 2018.

For the past few years, Seipi has been conservative with its yearly targets. In 2017, Seipi expected a growth of 5-6 per cent in export sales, while actual sales showed that the industry grew at least twice as much last year. In 2016, however, Seipi expected a 3-5 per cent growth, only to end the year flat, or a 0.1-per cent expansion.

Moving forward, Seipi is working on a roadmap that would increase the value-added capacities of the industry, with export sales expected to reach $40 billion in 2025 and $50 billion in 2030. Direct and indirect employment is expected to reach 5.5 million jobs in 2020, from the current estimate of 3.2 million direct and indirect workers.

The roadmap, called Product and Technology Holistic Strategy (PATHS), would require some investments in the country to put up facilities that would later on produce products such as smartphones, 3D printers and memory chips.

This would add more investments to the industry as Seipi expects an additional $1.5 billion in 2020, $3 billion in 2025 and $5 billion in 2030.

“On one hand, we can continue doing [what we’re doing] with the normal expansions, with the normal evolution of products, but that really didn’t take us beyond $30 billion. What we’re trying to do is infuse technology and new services to bring that up to maybe $35 billion, $40 billion and beyond,” he said.

SINGAPORE-BASED ride hailing app Grab has added motorbike taxis to its inventory in Phnom Penh, becoming the first app of its kind to offer the popular motodop service.

“We’ve seen a lot of people in Phnom Penh using motodops, and we thought we could help the drivers by letting them use the app to find customers,” said Wee Tang Yee, Grab’s country head for Cambodia and Thailand.

“With traffic here, too, motorbikes seem a lot more useful [than tuk-tuks or cars] if you want to get somewhere quickly.”

For now, GrabBike is only in beta and the service was launched exclusively in some central parts of the capital. Yee said the company had signed up about 100 motorbike drivers, all of whom had attended a safety and training session in addition to providing ownership documents and a valid driver’s licence.

Yoeun Ratana, one of Grab’s new drivers, showed up on his personal motorbike, sporting a Captain America shield emblazoned across the front.

Ratana has a full-time job as a technical assistant, but he signed up with Grab about a week ago to make extra cash.

“It’s really easy to use the [Grab] app, and it only took me a day to train to be a driver,” he said.

The base rate for GrabBike drivers in Phnom Penh is currently set at 2,500 riel, or $0.63, for the first kilometre, with customers charged an additional 1,000 riel, or $0.25, per kilometre after that.

Four sub-holdings formed under oil/gas holding firm

The Indonesian government is going ahead with its plan to establish an oil and gas holding company, marked by the reorganisation of state-owned energy company Pertamina, a move that resulted in the removal of the gas directorate, an official has said.

State-owned Enterprises Ministry spokesman Fajar Harry Sampurno said in Jakarta that the gas sub-holding would one of the four sub-holdings established under the oil and gas holding company.

“Therefore, we eliminated the gas directorate,” said Fajar, adding that the gas sub-holding company would involve state-owned gas distributor PT Perusahaan Gas Negara (PGN) and PT Pertamina Gas (Pertagas), a subsidiary of Pertamina, as reported by tribunnews.com.

The three other sub-holdings are a marketing sub-holding, an upstream sub-holding and a downstream sub-holding.

The Pertamina reorganisation was held after an extraordinary shareholders meeting in Jakarta. Pertamina is set to lead the oil and gas holding company with PGN as its subsidiary.

Meanwhile, Fajar said, the gas sub-holding company would be led by a figure from PGN.

Pertamina investment planning and risk management director Gigih Prakoso said people from the Pertamina gas directorate would handle gas-related matters before the establishment of the gas sub-holding. – The Jakarta Post

Indonesians help swell Singapore visitor numbers

Singapore saw tourist arrivals grow by a modest 6.2 per cent to 17.4 million visitors in 2017, with Indonesia ranking second after China as the largest contributor of tourists, the Singapore Tourism Board (STB) said.

The number of visitors from Indonesia rose to 2.95 million, up 2 per cent from 2016.

“Jakarta continues to be the largest source of visitors, although most other cities like Surabaya experienced greater growth rates,” STB chief executive Raymond Lim told a press briefing in Jakarta.

China topped the list with 3 million tourists and India came third with 1.3 million. Other countries with notable increases include Vietnam, the Philippines, the United States, Germany and the United Kingdom.

Visitors, however, spent proportionally less, with total spending recorded at S$26.8 billion (US$20.31 billion) last year, 3.9 per cent higher than in 2016, according to the board. – The Straits Times

Cambodia govt lays out plan for non-tax revenue

Cambodia’s Ministry of Economy and Finance held a workshop recently to finalise a draft on a sub-decree managing non-tax revenue sources, part of the government’s attempt to improve its revenue collection.

About 300 officials from relevant ministries attended the workshop, which was headed up by Net Mony, director-general of the General Department of State Assets and Non-Fiscal Revenue.

Mony said a final draft of the sub-decree would be submitted to the cabinet for approval by the end of March. Non-tax revenue accounted for about 15 per cent of total state revenue last year, according to Mony, but he said he expected that percentage to rise after the passage of the new rules.

Currently, non-tax revenue is collected individually by each ministry, and there are more than 5,000 different sources of non-tax income. The sub-decree is intended to simplify the collection process and bring all the sources under a single set of rules, Mony said. – The Phnom Penh Post

New private home sales jump 37% in Singapore

Singapore developers sold 522 private homes in January, up 37 per cent from the 382 units sold a year ago and 21 per cent more than the 431 units moved in December.

The above figures, released by the Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA) yesterday, based on its surveys of licensed housing developers, exclude executive condos or ECs, which are a public-private housing hybrid.

Inclusive of ECs, developers moved 622 homes last month, about 10 per cent more than the 566 units sold in January 2017 and 17 per cent higher than the 531 homes sold in December. – The Straits Times

A train commuter went through extreme lengths to keep her valuables by her side during a security check at a station in China, when she climbed into an X-ray machine while holding on to her handbag.

According to Chinese media, the woman’s bizarre actions startled security officers at the Dongguan Railway Station in China’s southern Guangdong Province last Sunday (Feb 11).

A video shared online shows the woman placing her luggage on the conveyor belt of the machine, before walking through the security scanner with a small handbag.

When told that all her valuables will have to pass through the machine, she turns around and is seen hopping onto the X-ray machine’s conveyor belt.

Two X-ray images show a silhouette of the woman, still in her high heels, kneeling on all fours behind her belongings.

Security camera footage then shows her climbing out of the machine and checking her handbag and luggage before walking away nonchalantly.

It was not clear what the woman was carrying in her handbag.

Local media reported that Dongguan Railway Station staff have advised passengers not to get into X-ray machines as radiation given off by the scanners could be harmful.

The unusual incident happened amid the world’s largest annual human migration as millions of Chinese return to their hometowns for the Chinese New Year which falls on Feb 16.

Trump lawyer says he paid $130,000 to porn star linked to president

ASEAN+ February 14, 2018 14:15

Washington – President Donald Trump’s personal lawyer told the New York Times Tuesday he paid $130,000 of his own money to a porn star who once said she had an affair with Trump.

The long-time Trump attorney, Michael Cohen, said he was not reimbursed for the payment to the actress, whose real name is Stephanie Clifford and who goes by the stage name of Stormy Daniels, the Times reported.

Cohen told the newspaper the payment was legal but declined to give details such as why he made it or if Trump was aware of the payment at the time.

“Neither the Trump Organization nor the Trump campaign was a party to the transaction with Ms. Clifford, and neither reimbursed me for the payment, either directly or indirectly,” Cohen said, according to the Times.

“The payment to Ms. Clifford was lawful, and was not a campaign contribution or a campaign expenditure by anyone.” US media reports have said the payment was made one month before the November 2016 election to keep the liaison quiet.

Trump was a private citizen when the 2006 sexual encounter with Clifford allegedly took place. He was married at the time and his wife Melania had given birth to their son less than four months earlier.

The payment was first reported last month by the Wall Street Journal. Cohen’s statement to the Times marked the first time he acknowledged a role in what he termed a “private transaction.”

Trump, through his lawyers, and Clifford, 38, have both denied anything ever went on between them.

But last month the celebrity magazine In Touch published a 2011 interview with Clifford in which she expounds at length and in detail on their relationship and what she described as their “textbook generic” sex.

In that interview, Clifford said she met Trump at a celebrity golf tournament in 2006 and had a sexual encounter with him then. She said she spoke with Trump on the phone or saw him in person for about a year.

The In Touch interview, which had not been published before, was conducted before Clifford’s alleged signing of a secrecy agreement in October 2016.

Clifford has been taking advantage of her new-found notoriety.

She appeared at the Trophy Club strip club in South Carolina last month as part of a “Make America Horny Again” tour that will also reportedly take her to several other states over the next few months.

In a recent appearance on the late-night TV talk show “Jimmy Kimmel Live” — right after Trump delivered his State of the Union address — Clifford repeatedly deflected questions about the alleged affair and whether she had signed a non-disclosure agreement.

“You can’t say whether you have a non-disclosure agreement. But if you didn’t have a non-disclosure agreement, you most certainly could say, ‘I don’t have a non-disclosure agreement’. Yes?” Kimmel asked.

“You’re so smart, Jimmy,” Clifford answered.

Later in the interview, Kimmel asked her, “Have you ever made love to someone whose name rhymes with Lonald Lump?” “I’ll call you whatever you want me to call you, baby,” Clifford responded.//AFP
