SAMSUNG has signed a memorandum of understanding with Grab, a car-sharing and mobile payment operator based in Singapore, to drive digital inclusion in the region, the South Korean company said.

Under the memorandum, the tech titan will supply smartphone and tablet PCs for Grab drivers, which are equipped with Knox, the company’s mobile security solution to ensure information security of Grab’s devices by reducing downtime and maintenance costs.

Grab cars with Samsung tablet PCs installed will be able to provide customers the chance to view infotainment content, such as information about sightseeing, restaurants and videos.

Grab is the largest ride-hailing platform business in Southeast Asia, operating in 186 cities in eight countries including Singapore, Indonesia, the Philippines, Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam, Myanmar and Cambodia.

Registered Grab drivers are around 2.3 million across the region, while the Grab application is being used on more than 77 million mobile devices.

The ride-hailing industry is one of the fastest growing Internet services sectors and is expected to be a US$25 billion market by 2022 in this region.

The latest partnership seems to be just the beginning of Samsung‘s US$300 million bet on the business of future autonomous driving. As unveiled at the Consumer Electronics Show in January, Samsung is preparing with its subsidiary Harman to commercialise vehicle infotainment technologies powered by artificial intelligence and Internet of Things.

Samsung and Grab will work together to provide improved income opportunities by offering micro-financing schemes through Samsung smartphones, better customer booking and in-car experiences and other new mobility solutions.

The micro-financing programme, part of Grab’s better 365 program, will reduce the cost of purchasing a smartphone and also lower ongoing maintenance costs with superior software and security features.

This programme was piloted in Myanmar, where only 30 per cent of adults have access to formal financial services, in the fourth quarter of last year. Currently, around 1,400 drivers in Myanmar who sign up with Grab can purchase and own Samsung devices and get a micro-loan from CB Bank, one of Myanmar’s largest banks and Grab’s local banking partner, to finance the device.

The two companies will further work together to expand into Southeast Asia’s fragmented mobile payments ecosystem and provide a mobile payments solution that will serve the needs of consumers in Southeast Asia, Samsung said.

“Southeast Asia is home to the world’s fastest growing emerging markets, yet many in the smaller towns and cities do not have easy access to the growing digital economy,” said Grab CEO and co-founder Anthony Tan.

“Samsung is one of the world’s most innovative technology companies, and we’re thrilled to partner with them to empower more people in Southeast Asia to improve their livelihoods and provide more digital services for everyone on the Grab platform.”

Grab will introduce more GrabKiosks and GrabBooths in busy consumer hubs such as shopping malls, hotels and airports, in partnership with Samsung. The facilities will feature Samsung devices with the Grab enterprise app pre-installed, allowing individuals and concierge services to book a Grab ride for themselves or others, even when they do not have data connectivity.

The Samsung devices at GrabKiosks and GrabBooths in Indonesia and Myanmar have been installed with Samsung’s Knox mobile security software.

The kiosks and booths will be rolled out in Vietnam and Singapore within the first quarter of this year, and other countries in Southeast Asia later in the year.

“We believe in the Internet of Things; the various benefits a more digitally connected world brings, and we are excited to be partnering with Grab to provide consumers within the region an enhanced array of digital solutions for their everyday needs,” said Lee Sang-chul, president and CEO of Samsung Electronics Southeast Asia and Oceania.

“Through this collaboration, we hope to explore how we can work together to tap into the massive growth opportunity of Southeast Asia’s digital economy.”

Blockchain tipped to shake up real estate sector

BLOCKCHAIN technology can bring revolutionary changes to the real estate sector in many aspects of the world market, including Vietnam, according to Savills Vietnam.

Blockchain is the secure ledger system behind the bitcoin cryptocurrency and it is the technology that has been credited with the power to reinvent the property sector.

Blockchain technology is notoriously complicated. In simplest terms, it is a shared record of transactions. Anyone can hold a copy of the ledger and anyone can read it. Changes ripple through all versions of the blockchain held worldwide. A locking method is employed to prevent any tampering by one party — making it secure.

Troy Griffiths, deputy managing director, Savills Vietnam, believes “blockchain has the capacity to revolutionise land transfers”.

If the technology were to be implemented for land-registry purposes, it would have several possible benefits. The automatic processing of contracts would mean that costs are reduced. There would be increased security as identity records are tamperproof and deal times are reduced, as a deal can be an entirely digital experience.

Blockchain puts real estate on a new footing. If it has the potential to increase liquidity and reduce costs, some significant barriers for investors are removed. If unitisation of direct property holdings can be achieved and/or if income streams derived from direct property holding can be split, it also decreases the “lumpiness” of real-estate investment; the barriers between real-world holdings and synthetic derivatives start to break down, making investment liquid, transparent and instantly tradeable. However, it may be some time before this can be achieved, as further safeguards would need to be in place.

Griffiths noted in his Vietnam Quarterly Market Report for the fourth quarter of 2017 that “blockchain is coming, but there is yet to be any major breakthrough”.

Griffiths is also optimistic about blockchain application, particularly in Vietnam. “So far, Vietnam has been slow on the uptake of this new technology but that will change very quickly. We have a large population of dynamic, aggressive and smart young people and a big start-up culture. I think we are in a wonderful position to take advantage of the new digital age.”

Land registries around the world are interested in it because they suspect that blockchain could enable the “almost instant” transfer of property ownership in a secure way.

One of the world’s oldest land registries, Her Majesty’s Land Registry in the United Kingdom, called it a “highly ambitious objective” that would require the most “far-reaching transformation in their 150-year history”. Earlier this year, HM Land Registry announced plans to create a virtual “digital street” to test the new technology.

TRAX, a Singapore company that provides digital connections between consumer goods companies and retailers by applying artificial intelligence image recognition to retail management, has announced its entrance into the Chinese market.

The technology uses computer image recognition to analyze retail and consumer goods data, turning photographs of retail product shelves into insights. The results can be used to improve in-store sales strategies.

Headquartered in Singapore, Trax has opened offices in Asia-Pacific, Europe, the Middle East, North America and South America, and set up an Engineering and Computer Vision Centre of Excellence in Tel Aviv, Israel. The company was established in 2011, and has already provided services for more than 175 clients and brands, including Coca Cola, AB InBev, Nestle, Henkel and PepsiCo, in more than 50 countries.

“Trax is the only company in the world that has a fully automated, real-time platform for stock-keeping-unit level recognition that can work offline or online,” said Joel Bar El, one of the co-founders and the CEO of Trax. “Using data and analysis generated by our image recognition technology, our clients see their out-of-stock rates reduced by 10-15 percent, and overall category sales increased by 3-5 percent on average.”

Consider Coca Cola, which is not only sold in supermarkets such as Carrefour, but in individually owned shops in smalls cities or counties, where it was difficult for the Coca Cola company to collect sales data such as stock-keeping unit, a type of merchandise number.

With Trax’s platform, the work can be done directly by shop owners, by taking photographs of retail product shelves with an inexpensive camera provided by Trax for free, and uploading those pictures to the platform. The data are collected by the platform, which is much more complex than what had previously been used by Coca Cola, and can help improve their in-store execution strategies.

In June 2017, Trax got $64 million during financing led by Warburg Pincus, a United States private equity firm. With the strong support of its investors, Trax has grown quickly in the past 18 months, especially in the US, and established offices in San Francisco, New York and Atlanta. In January, the company finished its acquisition of Quri, a US supermarket cloud data firm.

“China is a fast-growing major global economy with a burgeoning retail sector, due to the size of its population,” said Nancy Wang, managing director of Trax in China. “Retail is transforming rapidly in two specific areas: the shopping experience and technology adoption.”

“Trax is ready to lead that transformation by helping retailers reshape their in-store execution and store-level shelf interaction using leading-edge technology, ” he added.

Customs duty increase may push up phone prices in India

NEW DELHI

IN a bid to further help domestic smartphone manufacturers, Indian Finance Minister Arun Jaitley announced a hike in customs duty on mobile phones to 20 per cent from 15 per cent – a move that will force foreign players to pass on the burden to consumers.

“Customs duty on import of mobile phone parts will be increased to 20 per cent from the existing 15 per cent. This will boost jobs in the smartphone sector in India,” Jaitley said during his union budget speech.

“While the intention behind increasing the customs duties on some products such as mobile phones is to incentivise domestic manufacturing, this will lead to an increase in the prices for these products denting the middle-class consumers wallets,” MS Mani, Partner, Deloitte India, said in a statement.

Domestic smartphones welcomed the government’s move.

“We welcome the announcement on custom duty increase in mobile phones. This will help make India a global hub for mobile phone manufacturing. Local manufacturing will create more job opportunities, benefitting the youth and contributing towards the overall growth of the economy,” said Sanjeev Agarwal, Chief Manufacturing Officer, Lava International.

Rajeev Jain, Director and CFO, Intex Technologies, said the move will prove to be the big boost for localisation and setting up of a domestic component ecosystem.

Big thumbs-up

“This is a big thumbs-up to domestic players like Intex, which have been developing domestic capacities since long in electronics manufacturing,” he said.

Chinese smartphone vendors, however, were critical of the government’s move.

“The increase in customs duty will definitely hamper the cost to customer, especially when it comes to getting repairs for the high-end devices,” said Syed Tajuddin, CEO, Coolpad India.

“While increase in customs duty on handsets will compel brands to manufacture or assemble more in India, still there is not great support for local ecosystem for manufacturing spare parts,” he added.

According to industry experts, the customs duty hike will push foreign players towards manufacturing and sourcing components more within the country.

“This move will push almost all players to increase the assembling of mobile phones in India. From Apple’s point of view, it will certainly impact in the near term, possibly increase the prices of its flagships since most of them are being imported to |India,” Navkendar Singh, Senior Research Manager, IDC India, told IANS.

“In the long term, this will push Apple to start manufacturing of the entire range of devices in India to enjoy these incentives and remain competitive in a market like India, which it cannot afford to ignore,” Singh added.

“Almost 3/5th of total handsets out of 300 million sold last year were assembled in India. The increase in duty will further increase the local assembling share as brands will ramp up their current output from local Maintenance and Engineering Services (EMS) facilities since capacity is already there,” Tarun Pathak, Associate Director at Counterpoint, told IANS.

According to Faisal Kawoosa, Principal Analyst, Telecoms, CyberMedia Research (CMR), the move is in line with expectations to further give impetus to manufacture the handsets domestically.

“This will also push new entrants, which typically make beeline every year to India for local manufacturing who otherwise first procure CBUs from their parent companies and then gradually start manufacturing in India,” Kawoosa said.

“Now, to be competitive, such new entrants shall also have to look for a domestic manufacturer from the beginning,” he added.

In December, the government had increased customs duty on various items, including mobile phones, to 15 per cent from 10 per cent.

After the government hike, Apple became the first manufacturer to raise prices (on MRP) across iPhone models, except iPhone SE that the company assembles in the country.

A SYSTEM to authenticate electronic documents for individuals and businesses that was approved by Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen in a sub-decree late last year will take at least another year before it is fully implemented.

An event held recently at the Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications outlined the basic concept of what the country’s digital signature platform would look like once completed.

“Now, while there is no digital signature in place in Cambodia, [the origin of] all documents are difficult to verify,” said Ou Phannarith, director of the department of ICT security at the ministry.

Phannarith noted that while the government increasingly had online platforms, such as for taxation services and business registration, those processes still needed an in-person signature to verify the identity of the registrant.

That need would be eliminated by the use of verified digital signatures, he said.

Minister of Posts and Telecommunications Tram Iv Tek said that as Cambodia continued to move online, |the country needed to take steps to prevent fraud and cyberattacks.

“Now, we have seen an increase in transactions of e-payment, e-government, e-commerce, so there is a need for having a protected system,” he said.

French chef Veyrat seals comeback with third Michelin star

ASEAN+ February 05, 2018 18:10

Paris – Marc Veyrat, the comeback king of French cuisine, was back on the top of the culinary tree Monday after the Michelin guide awarded him the maximum three stars.

The flamboyant chef, who is rarely seen without his black Savoyard hat and cape, has now won the top rating for three different restaurants over the course of his career.

Nine years after Veyrat was forced to give up cooking after a serious skiing accident and three after his alpine restaurant La Maison des Bois burned down, the 67-year-old was back at the summit of French cooking.

Known for his highly inventive creations that mix delicate infusions of wild herbs with hearty traditional Savoyard cooking, Veyrat is one of only two “new” chefs promoted this year to the elite club who hold three stars, a source told AFP.

The self-taught master, who has spent most of his life cooking in his home village of Manigod 1,600 metres (5,200 feet) up the Alps near Annecy, has twice been given the maximum 20 out of 20 score by the rival Gault-Millau guide.

Christophe Bacquie, 45, of the Castellet Hotel in the Var region of southeast France was also awarded a third star for the first time.

Only a tiny club of 28 chefs hold three stars from the Michelin guide, the bible of French gastronomy.

Last week for the first time the Michelin allowed a top French restaurant to bow out of its listings after its chef told AFP he no longer wanted to work under the “huge pressure” of being judged by its inspectors.

Brrr! Brutal cold raises concerns over Olympics opening ceremony

ASEAN+ February 05, 2018 18:02

Pyeongchang, South Korea – Freezing weather at the Winter Olympics threatens to force some athletes and staff to pull out of Friday’s opening ceremony as Pyeongchang shivers in temperatures plunging to minus 20 degrees Celsius.

Forget Russian doping, North Korea and US speed queen Lindsey Vonn: much of the talk among those arriving in South Korea this week is the brutal cold.

The Pyeongchang Games are shaping up to be one of the coldest Olympics ever.

Italy are among the countries fearing the dangerous effects of the big chill and are advising their competitors to ensure they are moving at all times during the traditional curtainraiser on Friday.

Doctors with the Italian team have ordered coaches and staff with heart problems or diabetes to keep in the warm instead — the stadium for the opening ceremony is open to the elements with no roof.

New Zealand are taking no chances and Peter Wardell, their chef de mission, admitted on Monday: “We are a little trepidatious about the opening ceremony, which is going to be at night, and how we are all going to keep warm if it’s going to be these sorts of temperatures.

“They tell us it’s likely to be minus eight, minus 10, which is actually quite warm in comparison (to today).

“But it’s still a big ask to have athletes standing outside and then sitting for at least an hour and a half in the cold.”

He added: “Quite a few (Kiwi athletes) may decide they don’t want to march, particularly those competing really soon after.”

The mercury dipped to minus 13 degrees Celsius (9F) on Monday early evening and was set to go as low as minus 20 into early Tuesday.

That would put Pyeongchang on a par with parts of Siberia.

Winter athletes are used to being exposed to the cold, but even some of them say they are feeling the effects with the vicious wind making for a punishing climate.

Noriaki Kasai, the Japanese ski jumper, said: “I don’t think the cold will be a problem while I’m jumping because it’s just for a short time.

“The scariest bit will be the opening ceremony. I’ll have to stick heat patches all over my body for that.”

– Gas heaters and heat pads –

Organisers are taking measures to make sure that the athletes and 35,000 spectators at the opening ceremony do not freeze.

They are putting up a windscreen to block the powerful winds and setting up 40 portable gas heaters, along with 27 heating respite areas.

Organisers will also issue survival kits that include a blanket, heating packs for the hands and feet and a heating pad that spectators can sit on.

Ian Chesterman, Australia’s chef de mission, said they had been in talks with their kit manufacturer for more than three years about how to keep their athletes warm.

“Whilst this is the coldest Olympic Games for a while, Australia’s athletes regularly perform and train in equally or colder conditions,” he said.

“From memory, Lillehammer in 1994 remains the coldest on record with regular temperatures of minus 25.”

But not everyone is suffering. Some say it is the Winter Olympics, after all, and others are relishing the cold.

Bryce Bennett, an alpine skier for the United States, said: “We’re ski racers, we deal with being cold a lot.

“It will be interesting how everyone adapts to it.”

Park Hyun-Joo, 18, a volunteer, donned ear muffs, scarf, gloves and several layers to ward off the elements.

“It’s cold, especially at night, but I can endure it and it’s our duty to volunteer for the Olympics,” she said stoically.//AFP

Japan army helicopter crashes in residential area: local official

Tokyo

A Japanese military helicopter crashed Monday in a residential area in the southwest of the country, setting at least one home on fire, local officials said.

“A Self-Defence Force helicopter crash-landed on a residential area. A house has caught fire,” local government official Katsuhide Tanaka told AFP.

There was no immediate confirmation of any casualties in the crash in the town of Kanzaki.

Japan’s NHK television showed a thick plume of grey smoke rising from the site of the crash in between the rooftops of local houses.

Local firefighters could be seen running through the streets with red firehoses as people were evacuated from the area.

Defence Minister Itsunori Onodera confirmed a helicopter had gone down in Japan’s Saga region.

“The helicopter crashed and burst into flames,” he told reporters.

“Images show that the helicopter appears to have crashed in a residential area and we are checking that.”

“We’re still confirming the scale of casualties,” he added.

A defence ministry spokesman told AFP there were two people on board the Apache helicopter when it crashed.

The local fire authority said it had dispatched 14 fire engines and three ambulances to the site.

The crash raised memories of a 2016 incident in which a Japanese air force jet with six people aboard went missing in mountainous terrain.

Four bodies were later recovered.

Japan’s Self-Defence Forces (SDF) have been banned from waging any kind of combat beyond defence of the nation since the US-imposed constitution of 1947 that followed the carnage of World War II.

They have been deployed overseas in peacekeeping missions, some of which have proved controversial at home.

And while the SDF is strictly limited in terms of the scope of its military activity, Japan nonetheless boasts an impressive array of weaponry with highly trained personnel.

Cambodia Daily’s website, Twitter blocked by government order

Documents obtained today – and a surprising tweet – have confirmed what observers have suspected for months: that the Cambodian government ordered internet service providers (ISPs) to block access to the website of the recently shuttered Cambodia Daily.

Since shortly after the newspaper was forced to close on September 4, following the levying of a $6.3 million tax bill, access to the Daily’s site has proved patchy, with online users questioning whether certain ISPs had blocked the site.

Documents show that Tax Department head Kong Vibol asked the Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications (MPTC) to order ISPs to block the Daily’s IP address, Facebook page and Twitter account, primarily to “prevent the Cambodia Daily from making an excuse for why they were shut down from publishing, and secondly, to prevent them from continuing to operate online”, according to a letter dated September 5.

Vibol added that his department was “taking serious action” because the Daily had failed to “comply with the law” and pay the tax bill, one critics described as an “exorbitant” sum designed to shut down the often critical paper.

A second letter, dated September 28 and signed by Telecoms Ministry Secretary of State Khay Khunheng, instructs that “all companies who are providing internet services in Cambodia must set up software programs and devices that control the internet to block the webpage … and guarantee that this webpage and IP address will no longer be operating in the Kingdom of the Cambodia”.

It also requires ISPs to filter the Daily’s Facebook and Twitter accounts “in order to stop the operation of the account of the two pages”. The documents came to light after one ISP, Sinet KH, made a frank admission on Twitter late on Friday.

“We can confirm that we’ve been ‘ordered’ to block access to @cambodiadaily since many months ago,” @sinetKH wrote in a since-deleted tweet.

When pressed for more details, the representative wrote: “We are surprised by the reactions of this. The ‘block’ was long ago. Apart from a couple of complaints, most of our customers never noticed a thing. @cambodiadaily was never a popular web destination in the first place,” followed by the hashtag “#JustDoingOurJobs”.

Anecdotally, internet users have noted difficulty in accessing the Daily through MekongNet, Online and WiCam. MekongNet’s Sreang Pito confirmed the Daily’s IP address had been blocked to “follow government”.

Ezecom CEO Paul Blanche-Horgan said he had never seen such a letter, nor had Neak Longkheang at Digi. Representatives from other ISPs could not be reached today.

Cambodia Daily Deputy Publisher Deborah KrisherSteele said she did not know what “legal basis” there was for her site to be blocked.

“Of course it’s very disappointing that many Cambodians are not able [to] access our archived awardwinning reports,” she said in an email.

Im Vutha, spokesman for the Telecommunication Regulator of Cambodia, said while he was unaware of the letter, as a newspaper the Daily should fall under the purview of the Information Ministry, with the government having “a right to block their websites”.

“If they do something to not follow the law, the government has the right to enforce [the law],” Vutha said.

When asked in October if the government had ordered such a ban, Information Minister Khieu Kanharith responded: “We didn’t ask to block any website.” Today, he maintained he was unaware of the letter, adding that he had “no competence on cyber space”.

Moeun Chhean Nariddh, director of Cambodian Institute for Media Studies, said he understood the government “had a right to use the law”, but the block was a blow to press freedom. “Any shut down or block of the site can be perceived as censorship,” he said.

The controversial Law on Telecommunications provides “in the event of a force majeure” – an unforeseeable circumstance that prevents someone from fulfilling a contract – “MPTC or competent ministries or institutions may order relevant telecommunications operators to take necessary measures by relying on the Decision of the Royal Government”.

That “ill-defined” article was slammed in a 2016 legal analysis by rights group Licadho, which said the provision was “vulnerable to misuse” and might be “abused to temporarily shut down social networks and other internet-based services”.

A zoo in northern China will ensure that live puppies are no longer fed to its pythons after a video of feeding time set off a backlash online.

The footage taken at the Riverside Zoo in Pingdingshan, Henan province, shows a puppy sitting in a room near a snake in a box. Photographs also show another python with several bulges wrapped around another puppy, apparently dead.

A zoo employee confirmed that puppies were fed to snakes at the park but it was not official policy, the Beijing Morning Post reported on Friday.

The staff member said a contract worker at the park was responsible for feeding. “We have spoken to the person and instructed him to stop such actions,” the employee was quoted as saying.
