Gunman kills 26 at Texas church service

Sutherland Springs, United States

A black-clad gunman armed with an assault rifle opened fire on a small-town Texas church during Sunday morning services, killing 26 people and wounding 20 in the last mass shooting to shock the United States.

Authorities did not identify the gunman, saying only that he was a “young white male, maybe in his early 20s,” who was wearing a bulletproof vest and found dead in his vehicle after being confronted by a local resident.

Governor Greg Abbott warned the toll may rise.

“There are 26 lives that have been lost. We don’t know if that number will rise or not, all we know is that’s too many, and this will be a long, suffering mourning for those in pain,” he said.

Exactly five weeks after the worst shooting in modern US history, the latest tragedy prompted an outpouring of condolences, led by US President Donald Trump.

The victims, who ranged in age from five to 72, were gunned down at First Baptist Church in Sutherland Springs, a rural community of about 400 people located 30 miles (50 kilometers) southeast of San Antonio.

The gunman fired outside at the church before entering the building and continuing to spray bullets, said Freeman Martin, regional director of the Texas Department of Public Safety.

“As he exited the church, a local resident grabbed his rifle and engaged that suspect. The suspect dropped his rifle, which was a Ruger AR assault-type rifle, and fled from the church. Our local citizen pursued the suspect at that time,” Martin said.

Law enforcement later found the gunman dead in his car, which had crashed, on the Wilson-Guadalupe county line. It was not clear if he had committed suicide or was shot by the resident who had confronted him.

US media outlets had identified the shooter as a 26-year-old veteran who had faced a court-martial and was dishonorably discharged from the Air Force.

Victims

“There’s so many families who have lost family members. Fathers, mothers, sons, and daughters,” Abbott said.

“The tragedy, of course, is worsened by the fact that it occurred in a church, a place of worship, where these people were innocently gunned down. We mourn their loss, but we support their family members.”

The wounded had been transported to various hospitals with “injuries that vary from minor to very severe,” Martin said.

The dead included the 14-year-old daughter of pastor Frank Pomeroy, the church leader told ABC News.

Annabelle Renee Pomeroy “was one very beautiful, special child,” her father said.

Frank Pomeroy had been in the neighboring state of Oklahoma at the time of the shooting, and was driving back to Texas after the tragedy.

Other victims, some of whom were evacuated by helicopter, included a six-year-old boy named Rylan who was in surgery after being shot four times, his uncle told CBS News. A two-year-old was also shot and wounded, The Dallas Morning News reported.

A spokeswoman for Connally Memorial Medical Center in nearby Floresville said the hospital received eight patients with gunshot wounds. Four were transferred to San Antonio.

Trump vows ‘full support’

Police formed a perimeter around the area. Tearful relatives and neighbors stood outside, nervously awaiting news from inside the traditional, white-frame church.

Agents from the FBI and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives were headed to Sutherland Springs, the agencies said.

President Donald Trump, who is traveling in Asia, denounced the “horrific shooting.”

“This act of evil occurred as the victims and their families were in their place of worship. Our hearts are broken,” he said.

“We pull together, we join hands, we lock arms and through the tears and through the sadness, we stand strong.”

The president promised his administration’s “full support” to the investigation.

US Senator Ted Cruz of Texas said on Twitter: “Keeping all harmed in Sutherland Springs in our prayers and grateful for our brave first responders on the scene.”

The shooting comes just over a month after a gunman in Las Vegas fired down from a hotel room onto an outdoor concert, killing 58 people and wounding hundreds. It was the deadliest mass shooting in modern US history.

And Sunday’s tragedy came just over two years after a white supremacist, Dylann Roof, entered a historically black church in Charleston, South Carolina, and shot nine people to death.

Singapore, China securities |regulators to strengthen ties

The Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) and the China Securities Regulatory Commission (CSRC) agreed to strengthen supervisory cooperation and facilitate the development of their capital markets, during the second MAS-CSRC Supervisory Roundtable held in Singapore on Tuesday.

The MAS and CSRC discussed regulatory developments in the derivatives markets and their respective frameworks for supervising fund managers. They also deliberated on enhancing information-sharing arrangements for derivative products through an upgraded memorandum of understanding.

The roundtable was co-chaired by MAS deputy managing director Ong Chong Tee and CSRC’s vice-chairman Fang Xinghai.

The roundtable is one of the key outcomes of Chinese President Xi Jinping’s state visit to Singapore in 2015. He had called for securities regulators from both sides to hold regular high-level dialogue sessions. The inaugural roundtable was held in Chongqing, China, in April last year.

“As global capital markets become more interlinked, it is important for supervisory authorities to promote greater understanding of their respective regulatory frameworks,” Ong said.

”With growing cross-border capital market activities taking place between China and Singapore, the MAS-CSRC Roundtable provides a good platform for both agencies to exchange views on potential areas for supervisory cooperation on a regular and timely basis.” – The Straits Times

Pertamina secures gas supply from ConocoPhillips’ Corridor Block

Indonesia’s sate-owned energy giant Pertamina has signed a gas sale and purchase agreement with American oil and gas giant ConocoPhillips to secure a gas supply totalling 65 trillion British thermal units (BTU) from the latter’s Corridor Block in South Sumatra within the period from 2018 to 2023.

The gas supply will be used to fuel the operations of Pertamina’s Dumai refinery in Riau Islands, which has a capacity to produce 175,000 barrels per day (bpd). Pertamina has planned to upgrade the facility so that it can produce 300,000 bpd in 2024 with an investment value of around US$5 billion (Bt166 billion).

“This is a strategic step for us to minimise the fuel costs coming from the operation of our refineries,” Pertamina gas director Yenny Andayani said in a statement on Friday.

Under the agreement, the Corridor Block will first supply 57 million standard cubic feet per day (MMSCFD) of gas from 2018 to 2020. The figure will later increase to 120 MMSCFD between 2021 and 2023.

The gas will be transmitted through the Duri-Dumai pipeline, which is being jointly developed by Pertamina and state-owned gas firm PT Perusahaan Gas Negara with a total investment value of $76 million.

The Duri-Dumai pipeline, slated for completion by October 2018, will span 67 kilometres with a capacity to transport 140 MMSCFD of gas. – The Jakarta Post

Manufacturing output picks up as demand rises in Philippines

Manufacturing picked up in October ahead of the holiday season although the weaker peso that month pushed costs higher, the latest Nikkei Philippines Manufacturing Purchasing Managers’ Index (PMI) showed.

At the start of the fourth quarter, the PMI score increased to 53.7 from 50.8 in September, “signalling a marked pickup in the pace of improvement in operating conditions,” global research firm IHS Markit said in a statement on Thursday.

A PMI score of above 50 indicates an overall increase in manufacturing activity.

The PMI reading for October was also “well above the third quarter average,” IHS Markit noted.

“Growth in both output and new orders picked up noticeably, prompting firms to step up input purchases and hiring. Anticipating greater demand, companies also built up stocks of inputs and finished goods, while increased staff numbers helped them keep on top of workloads in October,” IHS Markit said.

After two months of marginal growth, there was a flurry of activity in the Philippine manufacturing sector at the start of the fourth quarter, IHS Markit noted.

Demand for Filipino manufactured goods strengthened noticeably, with order book growth picking up to a five-month high, it said.

“Greater demand lifted production volumes, which in turn prompted firms to hire more workers,” said Bernard Aw, principal economist at IHS Markit.

However, Aw warned that “further weakening of the peso poses a problem for manufacturers, especially those that rely on imported inputs for production.”

The peso hit fresh 11-year lows in October.

As such, “input cost inflation picked up sharply, which led firms to raise prices in order to preserve profit margins,” Aw said. – Philippine National Inquirer

Indonesia up in arms over EU’s |negative campaign against palm oil

Indonesia’s trade minister, Enggartiasto Lukita, called on palm oil stakeholders to join hands to fight the European Union’s negative campaign against palm oil-based products at a conference in Nusa Dua, Bali, on Friday.

In response to the EU campaign, Indonesia would take strong action by disrupting import commodities from Europe, such as milk powder, he added. “If the EU disrupts palm oil production, we will disrupt milk powder imports,” he told reporters on the sidelines of 13th Indonesian Palm Oil Conference.

Enggar also threatened to stop palm oil exports to Europe for a month, if the EU keeps putting pressure on Indonesia.

He said the EU’s negative campaign against palm oil products, based on environmental issues and health concerns, was unfair and baseless.

Oil palm plantations in Indonesia have been strictly controlled through sustainable practices and the consumption of palm oil has also been proven to be healthy, Enggar said.

Palm oil is a crucial commodity for Indonesia as it accounts for 12.5 per cent of the country’s total export earnings of US$18 billion (Bt598 billion) last year. From January to August this year, it reached $15 billion. – The Jakarta Post

SELANGOR, MALAYSIA

MALAYSIA and the world’s largest online retailer Alibaba on Friday launched operations at the Digital Free Trade Zone (DFTZ), a regional logistics hub aimed at small and medium-sized businesses.

“We want to redefine global trade… I look forward to the rebirth of the new Silk Road,” said Malaysian prime minister Najib Razak at the event, which was also officiated by Jack Ma, founder of Alibaba.

“With DFTZ, small businesses can use the digital way to sell and buy things. They can also buy global and sell global,” said Ma.

The first phase of DFTZ is a warehousing facility close to Kuala Lumpur International Airport to be operated by national courier, POS Malaysia.

The former cargo terminal has already been transformed into a full-fledged warehouse with sorting, shelving and pick-pack facilities that deploy automated guidance vehicles. The facility will initially serve Lazada, the region’s largest online retail mall. Alibaba holds an 83-per-cent stake in Lazada after injecting US$2 billion (Bt66.5 billion) in investments into the Singapore-based start-up.

Najib and Ma, who was made digital economy adviser to the Malaysian government last November, also held a ground-breaking ceremony to mark the zone’s second phase, to be jointly developed by Malaysia Airports Holdings and Cainiao Network, Alibaba’s logistics arm. This facility will begin operations in 2020. Both facilities hope to halve border clearance and handling times for cargo to three hours.

At the launch, Alibaba went live with its electronic trading hub, which will help Malaysian businesses in e-commerce, logistics and cloud computing, as well as in exporting their goods.

Responding to questions about Alibaba’s plans in the region after Malaysia’s DFTZ, Ma said: “We are interested in building infrastructure… Next is cloud computing for small businesses. Third is training courses for young people to learn how to do business.”

THE peso is seen further weakening to 55:$1 next year amid political uncertainty, London-based economic research firm Capital Economics said.

“We expect most Asian currencies to hold up well against the US dollar in 2018, supported by healthy external positions and strong export demand. The main exceptions are those with significant external vulnerabilities (Sri Lanka and Pakistan) and where the domestic political situation may deteriorate (the Philippines and Thailand),” Capital Economics said in its October 31 Emerging Asia Markets Monitor report titled “Asian equities bounce back.”

Capital Economics projected the peso to close this year at the 52:$1 level, before sliding to 55:$1 in 2018 and 2019.

Data showed that as of end-September, the peso weakened the most compared with other currencies that depreciated against the dollar, including those of Bangladesh, Indonesia, Sri Lanka, Malaysia and Singapore.

In contrast, the currencies of South Korea, India, Taiwan, China and Thailand strengthened against the greenback year-to-date.

“If companies are to invest, they need a stable and predictable business environment. While Rodrigo Duterte has not been the disaster for the economy that some feared, there are signs the new president’s war on drugs, his erratic policymaking style and the worsening security situation in the south of the country is starting to weigh on investment prospects,” according to Capital Economics.

MALAYSIA’S Sam Engineering and Equipment (Samee) will begin commercial production of nacelle beams for the Airbus A320neo aircraft at the new 100 million ringgit (Bt782 million) production facility in Bukit Minyak early next year.

Group chief executive officer Jeffery Goh Wee Keng said the nacelle beams – housings for the plane’s engine or fuel systems – are now undergoing prototype qualification by the customer.

“We are producing in Bukit Minyak half of the nacelle beams for the Pratt & Whitney engine used in the new Airbus A320neo aircraft,” he says. Samee has also secured projects for the Boeing 787, Airbus A350XWB, Airbus320ne and Boeing 737max.

“We’ve started delivery of various components for the Boeing 787 and Airbus A350XWB,” he said.

“For the Airbus 320neo, we have started delivery of the casings, while delivery for Boeing 737max has not started yet.”

Goh says the Bukit Minyak production facility will eventually be equipped with nine machines.

Goh said the group was looking at investing more in the facilities in Bayan Lepas and Bukit Minyak.

“The aerospace segment of the group would likely receive a higher allocation,” he said.

Goh said Samee has started delivery of the casings for the Airbus 320neo.

For the 2017 financial year ended March 31, Samee invested 82.8 million ringgit for the group operations, of which 78 million ringgit was spent for the aerospace business.

“Next year, when the new plant ramps up production, we can see the contribution from aerospace moving up,” he said.

The group has projected that its revenue from the aerospace industry would account for about 60 per cent of its 2018 revenue, which should remain stable.

On the slowdown in orders for the Airbus380, Goh said Samee makes only casing for the aircraft. “The impact is minimal as the orders for the new projects are picking up. Currently, the orders for AirbusA380 are at low production rates.” .

On the equipment business, Goh said the group had enlarged its presence in the front-end semiconductor sector, reducing the contribution from hard disk drive test equipment.

“We are now doing more work on making components for equipment used in front-end semiconductor manufacturing,” he added.

On the group’s first quarter for the 2018 financial year ended June 30 2017, Samee posted 13.2million ringgit in profit before tax on the back of a 133.4 million ringgit revenue, compared to 10.8 million and 27 million in the previous year.

Samee’s revenue for the first quarter was lower at 133.4 million ringgit, compared to 156.2 million in the fourth quarter of the 2017 financial year.

“The decrease to the contraction in revenue from the aerospace and equipment manufacturing segments by 12.8 million ringgit and 10.0 million ringgit respectively as a result of lower demand from customers during the quarter,” he said.

“We expect the revenue from the aerospace industry which accounts for about 62 per cent of our group revenue to remain stable.”

French touch excites Philippine hospitality sector

WHEN British hotelier Adam Laker came to Sofitel Philippine Plaza Manila five years ago, he bravely opened a room at the Spiral restaurant dedicated to cheese.

At that time Filipino diners were unaccustomed to the pungency of soft cheeses and were instead partial to hard cheeses but over time, the local market came to appreciate the variety and people learned that cheese culture was part of the French art de vivre, which echoes the Sofitel brand.

“Seven years ago, the Cheese Room might have failed. People said ‘Filipinos don’t like cheese. It would never work.’ Sometimes, it’s about doing the right thing at the right time,” says Laker, who wears two hats as area manager of AccorHotel Philippines and Sofitel general manager.

Talk about timing. AccorHotels, a French multinational hospitality company, had only one luxury brand, Sofitel, in Pasay City in 2013.

Since then, its portfolio has diversified into different brands in various locations.

“The Philippine economy has been growing. We’re just getting our share, and making sure that we stay dominant in the market,” says Laker.

The businessman’s hotel, Novotel Manila Araneta Centre, has become a favourite place for functions in Quezon City. The second Novotel property will soon be up and running in Mactan, Cebu.

A mid-size businessman’s hotel, Mercure Manila, is located in the Ortigas CBD.

In the same district, AccorHotels is managing Joy-Nostalg service apartments.

Laker explains that the two hotels complement each other since Mercury is a full-service hotel for short stays while Joy-Nostalg caters to long-staying guests.

It also reflects the variety of hotels under AccorHotels Philippines.

The MGallery Admiral Bay Manila on Roxas Boulevard, meanwhile, will be a boutique hotel that exudes an Old World charm.

“We try to match the brand to the location,” says Laker.

Last year, AccorHotels purchased the Fairmont Raffles Hotels International Inc, the Canada-based company that handles the premium brands Fairmont, Raffles and Swissotel.

It aims to gain more influence in the luxury market with the addition of FRHI’s premium brands and reputation.

While Laker oversees Sofitel, Novotel, Mercure and Joy Nostalg, he considers himself a “support mechanism” to the managing director of Fairmont/Raffles.

“My role is to assist him within the AccorHotel network. I’m like a buddy,” he says.

VIP guests

As Sofitel’s GM, he has been busy with hotel reinvestments through renovations and adding services to attract the market.

The newly renovated Spiral maintains its status as the country’s “mother of all buffets”.

In keeping with the times, the once-famous nightspot Sieta Pecados has been transformed into the state-of-the-art Snaps Sports Bar, which welcomes guests and airline crew who arrive after midnight.

To enhance the luxury concept, Sofitel boosted the health and wellness services from hairdresser Philippe Tordjman, a nail spa, a renovated gym and spa and Vietura Wellness Institute, which specialises in non-invasive aesthetic procedures. As major sources of revenues, the rooms and the banquet facilities have also been spruced up.

Due to these factors, Sofitel has been the hotel of choice of presidents and other VIPs. It also welcomed celebrity guests like Madonna, Mariah Carey and Michael Buble.

As a resort hotel, the 609-room Sofitel has been attracting a largely leisure market while 30 percent are group businesses.

Some 60 per cent of the market is domestic – wedding clientele, holidaymakers, meetings and conferences and a strong balikbayan market.

At the helm of the hotel is a 48-year-old hotelier with an impressive resume.

Laker helped his previous hotels win awards in several categories from best restaurant, best resort or hotel and best general manager from industry and World’s Top New Hotels from Conde Nast, for running a luxury resort in Thailand.

“For me, number one is that the hotel is performing well. Getting recognised with awards is just a bonus,” he says.

Laker values the guest satisfaction awards from independent sites such as TripAdvisor. “When you get votes from the clients, it means you’re looking after the clients, the product and hotel,” he says.

He cites Spiral for getting the Traveller’s Choice of Fine Dining Restaurant Asia from TripAdvisor.

“It’s purely from the guests speaking from their experience. Clients spend their money and give their most honest feedback. You can always put forth a submission into an awards system. But if you get an honest feedback from guests, it’s more rewarding,” he explains.

In 2011, at his previous posting at Sofitel Fiji, the hospitality magazine HM named him Best General Manager For the South Pacific.

Laker explains the award is given by industry peers and his organisation.

For Sofitel Manila, the reward for his leadership is the boost in gross operating profit.

Aside from innovation, a hotel must always provide a top quality product at a good price to ensure return guests. Regular customers help contribute to the profit.

“It’s always cheaper to maintain a client than to find a new one,” he says.

Following her win for Miss Earth National Costume, Karen Ibasco has been crowned Miss Earth 2017. The ceremony took place last night at the Mall of Asia Arena. Karen wore a yellow gold dress with a thigh-high slit and beaded details.

Karen is also the fourth Filipina to be crowned Miss Earth. The past Filipina women to win the crown were Karla Henry in 2008, Jamie Herrell in 2014, and Angelia Ong in 2015.

The other winners of the night included Miss Australia Nina Robertson for Miss Air 2017 and Miss Russia Leda Akimova for Miss Fire 2017.

Karen also gave an insightful response during the Q&A portion of the competition. When asked what the biggest enemy of Mother Earth is and why, she said, “I believe that the real problem in this world is not climate change. The real problem is us because of ignorance and apathy. What we have to do is to start changing our ways, to start recalibrating our minds and redirecting our steps because together, as a global community, our micro-efforts will have a macro-affect to save out home, our planet.”

Karen shared her excitement on Instagram Stories, posting a Boomerang thanking God for her win.

Spacey dumped by Netflix, police home in on Weinstein

ASEAN+ November 05, 2017 14:48

Netflix late Friday dropped Kevin Spacey, whose career is in free-fall over spiraling sexual assault accusations as police gather evidence for a possible arrest warrant against Harvey Weinstein for alleged rape.

The two-time Oscar winner Spacey, for years considered one of the most gifted actors of his generation, and whose collaboration with Netflix put the streaming giant on the map, has in just days gone from esteemed actor to entertainment pariah.

Reportedly being investigated by British police for assaulting a man in London in 2008, he has been publicly accused of attempting to rape a 15-year-old boy in New York and of making advances on a 14-year-old.

Already dropped by his publicist and agent, Netflix became the latest entity to cut ties with Spacey, saying it would be involved in no further production of its hit series “House of Cards” that includes the 58-year-old. Production of the last and final season, which had been due to air in 2018, has already been suspended.

The streaming service also said it was abandoning the release of an upcoming film “Gore” that had also starred the actor, whose glittering career is now collapsing around him.

“Netflix will not be involved with any further production of ‘House of Cards’ that includes Kevin Spacey,” a spokesperson said.

The channel said it would work with the show’s production company, MRC, “to evaluate our path forward as it relates to the show.”

Eight current or former employees on the award-winning “House of Cards” told CNN that Spacey turned the set into a “toxic” environment through a pattern of sexual harassment of younger, male crew members.

In London, police said that they had opened an investigation into an allegation of sexual assault. Officers do not publicly identify the subject of an inquiry unless they are charged, but British media said it was Spacey.

Since the allegations first surfaced Sunday, Spacey has made no comment other than declaring he was “beyond horrified” by the first allegation dating back 31 years, which he claimed not to remember.

– ‘Credible’ rape claim –

It remains unclear if “House of Cards” can now go ahead in any form.

Actor Anthony Rapp opened the floodgates by saying the actor tried to “seduce” him and lay on top of him when he was 14 years old at Spacey’s New York apartment 31 years ago.

A 48-year-old East Coast artist told Vulture he began a sexual relationship with Spacey when he was 14 that ended when he was 15 after the actor, then 24, allegedly tried to rape him.

Mexican actor Roberto Cavazos was another who claimed he fended off “unpleasant” advances while at The Old Vic, the London theater where Spacey was artistic director from 2003-2015.

Weinstein, once one of the most powerful men in Hollywood, and Spacey are the most high-profile scalps in a month-long torrent of allegations bringing down like dominoes male power players from the worlds of politics, finance, entertainment and journalism.

Some 100 women have since early October accused Weinstein, a father of five, of sexual misconduct ranging from harassment to rape, sparking police investigations in London, Los Angeles and New York.

On Friday, New York police confirmed that officers were gathering evidence for a possible arrest warrant in connection with Weinstein’s alleged double rape of “Boardwalk Empire” actress Paz de la Huerta at her New York apartment in late 2010.

“She put forth a credible and detailed narrative to us,” NYPD Chief of Detectives Robert Boyce told reporters. The former producer, his career in tatters, denies any non-consensual relations.

“If this person was still in New York and it was recent, we would go right away and make the arrest, no doubt. But we’re talking about a seven-year-old case and we have to move forward in gathering evidence first,” said Boyce.

“We have an actual case here,” he added. “Mr Weinstein is out of state. We would need an arrest warrant to arrest him. So right now we’re gathering our evidence. We continue to do so. Every day.”

The Manhattan district attorney’s office confirmed it had assigned a senior sex crimes prosecutor to the case.

Saudi Arabia arrests princes, ministers in sweeping purge

ASEAN+ November 05, 2017 14:34

Riyadh – Saudi Arabia arrested 11 princes, including a prominent billionaire, and dozens of current and former ministers, reports said, in a sweeping crackdown as the kingdom’s young crown prince consolidates power.

Separately, the head of the Saudi National Guard, once a leading contender to the throne, as well as the navy chief and the economy minister were replaced in a series of high-profile sackings that sent shock waves in the kingdom.

The crackdown was reported immediately after a new anti-corruption commission, headed by powerful Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, was established by royal decree late Saturday.

Saudi-owned Al Arabiya television reported that the princes, four current and dozens of former ministers were arrested as the commission launched a probe into old cases such as floods that devastated the Red Sea city of Jeddah in 2009.

State-run Saudi Press Agency said the commission’s goal was to “preserve public money, punish corrupt people and those who exploit their positions”.

Saudi billionaire Prince Al-Waleed bin Talal was among those arrested, Saudi news websites said though there was no official confirmation. The prince was not reachable for comment.

An aviation source told AFP that security forces had grounded private jets in Jeddah, possibly to prevent any high-profile figures from leaving.

Meanwhile, the kingdom’s top council of clerics tweeted that anti-corruption efforts were “as important as the fight against terrorism”, essentially giving religious backing to the crackdown.

“The breadth and scale of the arrests appears to be unprecedented in modern Saudi history,” said Kristian Ulrichsen, a fellow at the Baker Institute for Public Policy at Rice University.

“The reported detention of Prince Al-Waleed bin Talal, if true, would send shock waves through the domestic and international business community,” Ulrichsen told AFP.

Widening crackdown

The purge comes less than two weeks after Prince Mohammed welcomed thousands of global business titans to Riyadh for an investment summit, showcasing his economic reform drive for a post-oil era.

It follows a wave of arrests of influential clerics and activists in September as the 32-year-old prince, often known as MBS, cements his grip on power.

Analysts said many of those detained were resistant to Prince Mohammed’s aggressive foreign policy that includes the boycott of Gulf neighbour Qatar as well as some of his bold policy reforms, including privatising state assets and cutting subsidies.

The latest purge saw Prince Miteb bin Abdullah sacked as the head of the National Guard, an elite internal security force. His removal consolidates MBS’s control of the kingdom’s security institutions.

To analysts, MBS’s meteoric rise has seemed almost Shakespearean in its aggression and calculation. In June, he edged out a 58-year-old cousin, Prince Mohammed bin Nayef, to become heir to the throne.

At the time, Saudi television channels showed the bearded MBS kissing the hand of the older prince and kneeling before him in a show of reverence. Western media reports later said that the deposed prince had been placed under house arrest, a claim strongly denied by Saudi authorities.

Already viewed as the de facto ruler controlling all the major levers of government, from defence to the economy, the prince is widely seen to be stamping out traces of internal dissent before a formal transfer of power from his 81-year-old father King Salman.

At the same time, he has projected himself as a liberal reformer in the ultra-conservative kingdom with a series of bold moves including the decision allowing women to drive from next June.

Foreign diplomats predict MBS, set to be the first millennial to occupy the Saudi throne, could well be in control of Saudi Arabia for at least half a century.

George Town : The flood situation in Penang has worsened with flood waters rising to about 10 to 12 feet in Bandar Baru Air Itam, reaching the roof of the landed houses there in the wee hours of Sunday.

Paya Terubong near the former Lee Rubber factory was not spared from the floods.

Netizens posted that areas such as Lintang Sungai Ara and Gurney Drive, which were never flooded before, or had not been flooded for more than 30 years, were now inundated.

From the Facebook page of the Penang Island City Council (MBPP), it said roads that were flooded since 7am on Sunday were Jalan Masjid Negri, Jalan Perak in front of flat Taman Abidin, Jalan Makloom, Jalan Free School, Jalan Terengganu, Jalan Sungai Pinang and Lilitan Stadium.

Other areas that were flooded included Jalan Datuk Keramat in front of Penang Times Square and Jalan Transfer.

Many roads especially those located by the hills, such as Jalan Tun Sardon, Jalan Batu Ferringhi and Jalan Paya Terubong were not passable due to fallen trees.

In his Facebook page, Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng said Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi had agreed to send the Royal Malaysian Armed Force to help Penang in a telephone call at about 3.30am on Sunday.

Lim said that the situation in Penang was getting worse as the water level rose and winds were strong.

He urged Penangites to be patient and stay safe, as the state government will try its best to help those in need.

Penang Environment Committee Chairman Phee Boon Poh linked the continuous rain to Typhoon Damrey that hit Vietnam.

A family in Desa Damai here had to send off a loved one using a boat after the area was inundated by floods Sunday.

Video clips of the funeral have also gone viral, showing the casket being floated on the water in a boat on Jalan Padang Lalang.
