TOKYO – Restaurants and retailers are trying to reduce the carbohydrates in their foods with an eye on the increasing number of people who are trimming carbs from their diets to lose weight or avoid lifestyle-related diseases.

Restaurants and retailers are trying to reduce the carbohydrates in their foods with an eye on the increasing number of people who are trimming carbs from their diets to lose weight or avoid lifestyle-related diseases.

Bread, rice and noodles are among the foods that are high in carbohydrates.

Kura Corporation, the operator of conveyor-belt sushi restaurant Kurasushi, began offering so-called shari-yasai at the end of August, with fish pieces topped on pickled daikon or other vegetables instead of the vinegared rice normally used in sushi.

“This is healthier than vinegared rice. Daikon is crisp and tasty,” said a 72-year-old woman as she popped a piece of shari-yasai into her mouth at the Kurasushi outlet in Itabashi Ward, Tokyo.

Restaurant chain Gusto began using Chinese noodles with spinach and chlorella algae kneaded in for some of its recipes. The low-carb dish costs ¥100 more than normal noodles, but it is “selling better than the company expected,” according to a spokesperson, as the special noodles have about 25 percent fewer carbs.

FamilyMart Co. cooperated with gym operator Rizap to develop low-carb pasta and desserts that it sells at its stores. Lawson Inc. has displayed the amount of carbohydrates contained in its sandwiches and other products since April in response to the many customers who are concerned about their carbohydrate intake.

According to a survey by Fuji Keizai Co., the “carb-free” market in 2016 is estimated to be ¥343.1 billion, up about 40 percent from 2012.

Amid the growing popularity of low-carb foods, it should be noted that excessive restriction of carb intake may negatively affect one’s health.

Hajime Haimoto, a doctor who chairs the Japan Low-Carbohydrate Diet Society, said: “Cutting down on carbohydrates will help prevent diabetes and obesity, but what’s important is balanced diet and exercise.”

Calling all developers – the code for Singapore’s first crowdsourced private bus service app is now open to the public.

The city-state’s Senior Minister of State Janil Puthucheary announced that two-year-old app Beeline, run by the Government Technology Agency (GovTech), would be progressively open-sourced to the public.

By releasing the code, members of the public or enterprises can use it to build other crowdsourced transport apps similar to Beeline, or develop completely new apps, such as using Beeline’s bus-tracking feature.

The first set of Beeline code has been released on popular developers’ site GitHub.

“We hope that people will use it, change it, adapt it, innovate using it … to ride on the public sector data that’s already available around transport,” said Janil, who is in charge of GovTech.

“This is the general approach that we’re going to take: ‘How can we involve more people in more public sector work?’. That’s what all this is about.”

The app provides a matching service and booking platform for bus services run by private operators. Users can request a specific route and if enough people ask for it, the route will be taken up by one of the bus service providers.

Since 2015, it has been downloaded 56,000 times. A total of 54,000 route suggestions have been made so far, leading to 80 crowdsourced routes being launched. Eight of them are currently running.

Chief executive of GovTech, Jacqueline Poh, said: “Smart urban mobility is a key component of Singapore’s Smart Nation vision. By open-sourcing Beeline, we hope to catalyse innovative solutions, be it by commercial operators or individual developers.”

Janil was the guest of honour at the finals of the first National Data Visualisation Video Challenge organised by GovTech. Over 200 students took part.

The challenge aimed to encourage the use of open government data to improve daily decision-making or enhance the quality of lives for loved ones.

SOUTH Korean researchers have developed a portable wireless sensor that is able to detect a person’s intake of amphetamine-based drugs like Adderall, ecstasy and |crystal meth using just a |drop of sweat, saliva or urine.

The sensor was co-developed by South Korea’s Institute for Basic Science and Pohang University of Science and Technology. Their work was published Friday in Chem, a sister journal to the physical sciences journal Cell.

Now, drug testing involves using complex diagnostics devices that are often bulky, expensive and slow. There are cheaper, on-site drug testing devices available, but they |are unable to detect drug intake under 1 pm.

The Korean research team claims its newly developed portable sensor – at 1.5 x 3.5 centimetres – is 10,000 times as accurate as existing portable drug screening devices.

For now, the sensor has been designed as a smart bracelet prototype that syncs with a smartphone. If commercialised, the team expects the technology will make drug screening as easy as testing for alcohol intake with a breathalyser.

The IBS-Postech team built the sensor by coating an organic semiconductor with a chemical – Cucurbit[7]uril hydrate – that selectively bonds with amphetamine molecules.

When tested, the sensor’s sensitivity stood at 0.1 ppt for water and 0.1 ppb for urine, which is around 10,000 |times as sensitive as today’s existing portable drug |screening sensors.

“We expect our research to go beyond the confines of academia to shift the paradigm of drug screening procedures in the real world,” said Kim Ki-moon, the head of the IBS research team.

Looking ahead, the Korean research team plans to continue developing this sensor to screen for not only amphetamine-type drugs but also lethal toxins and endocrine disrupting chemicals.

JD.COM INC, China’s second-largest e-commerce player, has announced partnerships with Chinese auto makers SAIC Maxus and Dongfeng Motor Corporation to conduct research on the country’s first automatic vans.

The e-commerce giant has jointly developed two models of automatic light electric vans with SAIC Maxus and Dongfeng respectively, for the delivery of goods from JD’s distribution centers to delivery stations, JD said in a statement.

SAIC Maxus’ electric van can sense obstacles 150 metres away and plan its route leveraging its radar system, sensors and positioning system. To date the van has conducted successful tests of automatic route planning, overtaking, obstacle avoidance and self-parking functions, according to JD.

The partners will carry out all-round cooperation to promote the development of automatic vehicles and related technologies, and improve the construction of an intelligent logistics system.

Automatic vans are the latest addition to JD’s automated vehicle family. The company is increasingly betting on its intelligent logistics operations to differentiate itself from Alibaba Group Holding Ltd.

JD began developing its |automatic delivery vehicles |last year, aiming to employ unmanned delivery vehicles to conduct bulk deliveries to office buildings and residential areas in cities to enhance delivery efficiency.

Last year, it successfully used drones to deliver online purchases to rural shoppers in Jiangsu province. Moreover, robots and driverless cars for deliveries were used during the June 18 shopping festival this year.

Wang Zhenhui, CEO of JD Logistics, said: “Working with partners, we will continue to enhance our smart logistics and push the bounds of our traditional logistics solutions.”

“The automatic vans used for delivering goods are still in the phase of R&D, and we still need a long time to see its large-scale commercial application as the automatic vehicles must undergo multiple tests and obtain a license before they are introduced on roads,” said Lu Zhenwang, CEO of Shanghai-based Wanqing Consultancy.

Lu said JD has taken the lead in the domestic intelligent logistics sector and has invested hugely in related intelligent equipment, such as unmanned sorting and handling equipment, drones and driverless deliveries.

“Of course, the application of automatic vans could enhance the efficiency of delivery and reduce costs,” he said.

JD currently operates China’s largest nationwide delivery network and is able to provide same-or next-day delivery to a population of over a billion. Its logistics innovation lab is also researching other advanced automation technologies such as automated warehouses to enhance the user experience.

Still a long road ahead for the electric vehicle

TOKYO

THE TREND towards electric vehicles (EVs) is accelerating worldwide. The governments of France and Britain announced a ban on sales of petrol and diesel vehicles starting in 2040, and China will be discussing when to impose a ban as well.

However, EVs also face challenges such as lengthy battery charging times and short travel distances.

At the Frankfurt International Motor Show that started from September 12, German automakers such as BMW and Daimler staged an “electric vehicle rhapsody”. Volkswagen plans to introduce about 50 EV models by 2025 and invest 20 billion euros (Bt785.6 billion) in the transition to EVs.

At a press conference in Paris on September 15, Carlos Ghosn, who serves as chairman of Nissan Motor Co, Mitsubishi Motors Corp and Renault, said: “In the next 10 years, the auto industry will face changes greater than any experienced in the past 50 years.”

However, this great transformation will not necessarily be arriving soon.

In a forecast of global auto production compiled this spring by research agency IHS Markit, EVs are estimated to reach 3.7 million units in fiscal 2025, or 3.4 per cent of all production, while plug-in hybrids that can be charged from an external source will rise to 5.39 million units, or 4.9 per cent of production.

Petrol and diesel vehicles are predicted to account for about 70 per cent of new models produced in fiscal 2025. Even as the trend toward EVs gathers momentum, they are still far from being the “lead character” in the industry.

Electric and petrol vehicles have a long history of vying for supremacy. In 1899, La Jamais Contente, an electric car driven by Belgian Camille Jenatzy, was the first vehicle to break the 100 km/h mark, ahead of petrol engine vehicles.

However, EVs had the fatal flaw of short running distances. When the Ford Motor released its Ford Model T in 1908, gasoline engines capable of driving long distances became overwhelmingly dominant.

EVs have been in the spotlight a number of times. Seven years ago at the 2010 Paris Motor Show, there were similarly wide expectations for the popularisation of EVs. Nissan released the Leaf that same year, but together with partners such as Renault, it has achieved EV sales of just 500,000 units. They were unable to achieve the target set by Ghosn of 1.5 million units by fiscal 2016.

The tricky problem of battery life has persisted for more than a century. US automaker Tesla Motors delivered its new Model 3 in the United States in July, with a running distance of 350 kilometres to 500 kilometres under US standards. The new Leaf model that Nissan is releasing in Japan in October will have a running distance of about 400 kilometres under Japanese standards, doubling that of the first-generation model.

Battery performance has greatly improved, but unlike a gasoline engine vehicle that can be filled up in a few minutes, charging batteries still takes time.

EVs emit no exhaust fumes, but the key point in terms of preventing global warming is how the electricity used to power them is produced. In China and Japan, countries reliant on thermal power generation, carbon dioxide (CO2) is released when power is generated.

“Ultimately, there’s not much difference between emissions produced by electric and hybrid vehicles [and other vehicles],” said a source related to the energy industry.

The announcements by the French and British governments to abandon gasoline vehicles should be regarded as their political resolutions to promote renewable energy and EVs simultaneously, based on the Paris Agreement, an international framework to mitigate global warming.

In France, nuclear power generates about 80 percent of all power produced, so the popularisation of EVs will enable them to reduce CO2 emissions.

Britain is also keen on renewable energy. In the first six months of this year, Scotland’s wind power generation reached 57 per cent of its entire energy consumption.

The main focus of attention is on China’s course of action as the world’s largest automobile market.

Vexed by air pollution, the Chinese government outlined a policy in September that would promote discussions on when to impose a ban on gasoline vehicles and the like. Automakers will meet the quotas for local production of new energy vehicles, including EVs, starting in 2019.

Some within the Chinese government have said they cannot beat developed countries with gasoline vehicles, and that China should compete via EVs.

The future of engines

It is precisely because they listen to their customers and invest in technology and production facilities that blue-chip companies become unable to cope with major technological changes, or “disruptive innovation.” This is the “Innovator’s Dilemma” warned of by Harvard Business School academic Clayton Christensen.

As a clear example of this, Christensen points to Japan’s electronics industry, which became complacent with its successes and lost its competitive edge.

Christensen performed a case study on EVs and the auto industry, saying that what concerns automakers is that EVs have the feel of “disruptive technology”.

About 5.3 million workers in Japan are employed in auto manufacturing-related industries, and the industry has a broad base that involves the precise assembly of about 30,000 parts. However, the mechanism that powers an EV’s motor is simple.

Yasumori Ihara, president of Aisin Seiki Co., Toyota Group’s core parts manufacturer, expressed deep concern.

“Taking away all the transmissions and engines, you take away about 2 trillion of our 3.5 trillion yen in sales. The impact is huge,” Ihara said.

Conversely, the situation presents an excellent opportunity for manufacturers of electrical parts such as motors and batteries.

The Japanese government’s target is to increase the proportion of “next-generation vehicles,” including EVs, fuel cell vehicles and hybrids, to 50 per cent to 70 per cent by 2030.

These vehicles already comprise a little less than 40 per cent, so the target can be viewed as not terribly ambitious.

Engines boast more than 100 years of history and will continue to see strong demand in developing markets, with room for improvement.

Nevertheless, an executive at Continental AG, a leading German auto parts firm, told Reuters that as the transition to electric continues, developing next-generation engines will lose economic rationality starting around 2023 due to advances in electrification.

The transition to EVs may be slow in coming.

Even so, the turning point will arrive sooner or later. Preparing for a future that moves away from engines is crucial.

US biology trio wins Nobel Medicine Prize

Breaking News October 02, 2017 17:24

Stockholm – US geneticists Jeffrey C. Hall, Michael Rosbash and Michael W. Young were awarded the Nobel Medicine Prize Monday for shedding light on the internal biological clock that governs the wake-sleep cycles of most living things.

“Their discoveries explain how plants, animals and humans adapt their biological rhythm so that it is synchronised with the Earth’s revolutions,” the Nobel Assembly announced.

Life on Earth is adapted to the rotation of our planet. For many years, scientists have known that living organisms, including humans, have an internal clock that help them anticipate and adapt to the rhythm of the day.

Hall, 72, Rosbash, 73, and Young, 68, “were able to peek inside our biological clock and elucidate its inner workings,” said the Nobel Assembly.

The clock influences such biological functions as hormone levels, sleep, body temperature and metabolism.

It is what causes jetlag — when our internal clock and external environment move out of sync when we change time zones.

Using the fruit fly as a model organism, this year’s laureates isolated a gene that controls the daily biological rhythm.

“They showed that this gene encodes a protein that accumulates in the cell during the night and is then degraded during the day,” the Nobel team said.

“Subsequently they identified additional protein components of this machinery, exposing the mechanism governing the self-sustaining clockwork inside the cell.”

The trio will share the prize sum of nine million Swedish kronor (about $1.1 million or 937,000 euros).

Last year, Yoshinori Ohsumi of Japan won the prestigious prize for his work on autophagy — a process whereby cells “eat themselves”, which when disrupted can cause Parkinson’s and diabetes.//AFP

Terror on Las Vegas Strip after deadly shooting spree

ASEAN+ October 02, 2017 15:42

LOS ANGELES – At least two people were killed and more than 20 wounded when a gunman went on a shooting spree at a concert on the famous Las Vegas Strip late Sunday, police and US media reports said.

Police said the shooter was taken “down” after officers swarmed over the famous boulevard in response to multiple shots being fired from the Mandalay Bay casino resort towards thousands of fans at a country music concert.

Revelers screamed and fled in panic as a steady stream of gunfire rang out at the venue, footage captured on smart phones showed.

“At this time we do have a suspect down,” Las Vegas police officer Steve Gomez told reporters, without elaborating.

“We have numerous victims right now,” he added.

While police did not immediately give a figure for the number of dead, CNN reported that at least two people had been killed.

Several local news outlets put the number of injured at up to 24.

Pictures taken at the scene showed revelers cowering in the street or running in terror, as well what appeared to be several bodies lying prone on the ground.

A local hospital was taking in “several” people with gunshot wounds, University Medical Center spokeswoman Danita Cohen told the local Sun newspaper.

Video footage circulating on social media showed a large crowd enjoying a concert as part of the Route 91 country music festival just outside the casino before what sounded like volleys of automatic gunfire halted the performance.

– ‘Like firecrackers’ –

=======================

“We heard (what) sounded like a glass breaking, so you looked around to see what’s going on and then heard a pop, pop, pop,” Monique Dekerf told CNN.

“You’d think for a moment okay we’re fine, there’s no more gunfire, then it starts again.”

Her sister Rachel said it sounded like “the shots were coming from the right side … it sounded like they were right beside us too … it was right there.”

Fans said that the best-selling singer Jason Aldean was on stage at the time of the shooting which came towards the end of the concert.

“We were watching the concert having a great time, then we heard what sounded like firecrackers,” witness Joe Pitz was quoted as saying by the local Las Vegas Sun news outlet.

“I guess it was an automatic weapon going off but it literally sounded like firecrackers.

“Then soon enough there was commotion on the Mandalay Bay side of the stage. They were motioning for medics to come and safety people to come and Jason Aldean ran off the stage.

“Everybody in the vicinity went down. I don’t know if they were ducking or if they were but it was chaos.”

Another witness told local TV news station KLAS that he saw someone several stories high firing hundreds of shots into a crowd of people.

Police however denied reports of multiple shooters.

“At this time we do not believe there are any more shooters,” the department wrote on Twitter.

A shocked Aldean told his fans via Instagram that he and his band was safe.

“Tonight has been beyond horrific,” the singer wrote.

“I still dont know what to say … My Thoughts and prayers go out to everyone involved tonight. It hurts my heart that this would happen to anyone who was just coming out to enjoy what should have been a fun night.”

Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha has ordered that security be strengthened before and during the Royal funeral of the late HM King Rama IX after intelligence agencies reported that some groups may try to cause trouble during the ceremony.

The groups causing concern operate from overseas, the three deep southern provinces, and anti-monarchy groups as well as general disturbance networks.

Prayut has assigned the military, police, the National Security Council and the National Intelligence Agency to gather information and prepare for any attempt to cause trouble.

It is estimated that about 250,000 people will attend the ceremony held at Sanam Luang.

Prayut on Monday is in the United States for an official visit.

Deputy Prime Minister Prawit Wongsuwan meanwhile chaired a meeting of authorities involved in organising the Royal funeral.

He said he ordered authorities to be fully aware to prevent any chaos and ensure that the ceremony proceeds safely.

“I’m concerned with any possibility of chaos that might happen before and during the funeral. I have ordered full reinforcements after receiving information that there are some ill-intentioned groups inside and outside the country that may be prepared to create a  disturbance during the event,” he said.

The Royal funeral of the late King is one of the greatest events in the world, therefore we will host it with our best efforts, Prawit said.

Trump discourages Tillerson from talking to North Korea

ASEAN+ October 02, 2017 13:43

By The Korea Herald/ANN

SEOUL – Experts say North Korea could stage another provocation this month to coincide with key anniversaries, including the founding anniversary of the ruling Workers’ Party of Korea on October 10.

US President Donald Trump said Sunday he has discouraged his top diplomat from talking to North Korea over its nuclear weapons programme because it is a waste of time.

“I told Rex Tillerson, our wonderful Secretary of State, that he is wasting his time trying to negotiate with Little Rocket Man,” Trump wrote on Twitter, using his nickname for North Korean leader Kim Jong-un. “Save your energy Rex, we’ll do what has to be done!”

Trump has threatened to “totally destroy” North Korea in the wake of its nuclear and ballistic missile tests, stoking fears of an armed clash on the Korean Peninsula, the Korea Herald reported quoting Yonhap.

In an apparent bid to ease the tensions, Tillerson said Saturday that the US maintains channels of communication with Pyongyang and is not in a “dark situation, a blackout.”

“We can talk to them. We do talk to them,” he told reporters in Beijing.

The State Department added in a statement that North Korea has yet to show an interest in discussing its denuclearisation.

North Korea has posed the biggest security challenge to the US, with Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman Gen. Joe Dunford saying last week that it is only a matter of a “very short time” before the regime develops a nuclear-tipped ballistic missile capable of reaching the mainland US.

Pyongyang has refused to back down despite increasing sanctions on the regime, saying the weapons programmes are a deterrent against US hostility.

“Being nice to Rocket Man hasn’t worked in 25 years, why would it work now?” Trump added in a tweet sent later in the day.

“Clinton failed, Bush failed, and Obama failed. I won’t fail.”

The president was apparently referring to past agreements that sought to dismantle Pyongyang’s weapons programme in exchange for economic aid. The North Korean regime reneged on those deals by carrying out new nuclear and missile tests.

Many experts say North Korea could stage another provocation this month to coincide with key anniversaries, including the founding anniversary of the ruling Workers’ Party of Korea on October 10.

The regime conducted its sixth and most powerful nuclear test on September 3 after launching two intercontinental ballistic missiles in July.

“DPRK will not obtain a nuclear capability. Whether through diplomacy or force is up to the regime,” State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert said on Twitter, using the acronym of North Korea’s official name, the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea.

“Diplomatic channels are open for Kim Jong-un for now. They won’t be open forever.”
