Aspiring singer Catriona Elisa Gray of the Philippines will wear the crown as a champion of kids in need and other causes

MISS PHILIPPINES, Catriona Elisa Gray, already had a lot to her credit long before she entered the Miss Universe pageant – and won the crown yesterday morning.

A woman of remarkable beauty and exceptional charisma, Gray, 24, has delivered her homeland the best possible Christmas gift.

In the final round held at Impact Arena in Bangkok, Miss South Africa Tanaryn Green was crowned first runner-up and Miss Venezuela Sthefany Guterrez as second runner-up.

Ninety-four contestants from around the world participated in the competition, now in its 67th year. This was an historic occasion, with a transgender woman competing for the first time in a pageant that has as its theme “Woman’s Empowerment”.

The judges were all successful women in their fields, including Miss Universe 1988, Thailand’s Porntip “Bui” Simon.

Gray is an art lover and holds a master’s certificate in music theory, with ambitions to become a professional singer. Just three weeks ago she released her debut single, “In This Together”, in partnership with her organisation, Young Focus, aiming to promote unity among diverse cultures. That, she said, is the goal she wants to pursue as Miss Universe.

CONGRATULATIONS! HOW DOES IT FEEL?

It hasn’t really sunk in yet. I guess that will come tonight when I see my family. But in the meantime, I’d like to say thank you to all the media, |the fans, and to all my Miss Universe sisters also. I’m just so thankful for the experience in Thailand, to the organisation and to the |organiser TPN who looked after me so well.

WHAT’S THE FIRST THING YOU WANT TO DO?

I’d like to see my family and eat green mango with spicy chilli sauce and drink some Thai milk tea. That’s my special treat every time I come to Thailand.

SOUNDS GOOD! WHAT THEN?

I’d definitely love to expand my platform regarding education about HIV/Aids in the Philippines. It’s something I feel passionate about, not least because a few years ago I lost a friend due to complications from HIV. So I’d like to spread awareness.

Other than that, I want to insist on the need for education for young children who don’t have access to quality education.

I’ve worked with the organisation Love Yourself PH and I’ve been a volunteer as a teacher’s |assistant for students of the NGO Young Focus for more than three years, starting before I even thought of entering the pageant. |So I’m very proud that the |committee sees that.

Being Miss Universe is definitely going to keep me grounded and |humble.

YOU’RE OFF TO NEW YORK NEXT. HOW DO YOU FEEL?

Thrilled! There are so many Broadway shows I’d like to see and it would be wonderful to experience autumn and winter, because we don’t have that in the Philippines.

I hope I also get the opportunity to go to Indonesia and Europe, because I’ve never been. But I know that, wherever I go, I’ll have friends.

WHAT ARE YOUR THOUGHTS ON THE CONTEST IN TERMS OF DIVERSITY AND WOMEN’S EMPOWERMENT?

I think Miss Universe is a wonderful platform for promoting diversity and empowerment. It brings together women who represent their countries. They have stories to tell. They have passions and careers. We’re here together to voice what what touches our hearts. I think Miss Universe is an amazing |platform and we empower each other.

WHAT CHALLENGES DID YOU ENCOUNTER ON YOUR WAY TO BECOMING MISS UNIVERSE?

There are of course many expectations for Miss Philippines. I relied on my inspiration, my fans and my supporters. I’d like to thank them because I wouldn’t be here without them.

WHAT DO YOU CONSIDER THE KEY TO YOUR SUCCESS?

I think being prepared. I really think success relies on preparedness and opportunity. So if you’re prepared for an opportunity that comes along and you’re able to give it your all, it will lead you to success.

TELL US ABOUT YOUR EVENING GOWN AND WHY YOU CHOSE IT.

Mount Mayon in my hometown in the Philippines was the inspiration. It’s known for the perfect cone shape of the volcano. I chose red because, when I was 13, my mother told me she’d dreamed I won Miss Universe in a red dress. When I saw her earlier, she remembered that dream.

HOW ABOUT YOUR NATIONAL COSTUME, WHICH WEIGHED A HEFTY 50 KILOGRAMS?

I chose it because I wanted to show different aspects of our |culture as well as the different islands of the Philippines. Initially I was supposed to carry it on my shoulder, but once the lights and everything were installed I couldn’t, so that’s why we put it on a wheel.

But I’m so proud of the national costume because I received so much praise for it. It makes me so proud that people can learn about my culture this way.

VIDEO OF YOUR SLOW TURNS IN THE PRELIMINARY ROUNDS WENT VIRAL ON THE SOCIAL MEDIA.

So many people asked me about it. I just turn slowly! When you spin fast, you get a bit of momentum and the dress adds to that. When we were talking about how we could be different, my mentor and team came up with a signature move – to move slowly.

WHAT DID YOU THINK ABOUT THE QUESTIONS ASKED IN THE FINAL?

The medical-marijuana issue is definitely relevant to my country. It’s an active topic. As I said, I’ve read the studies on marijuana and obviously it needs to be further researched. Regulations must be put in place too before pursuing it further.

WHAT WAS THE MAIN OBSTACLE YOU HAD TO OVERCOME DURING THE CONTEST?

Keeping my spirits high and also always being pleasant, no matter how much pressure from external factors I was feeling, from those around you and in the social media. It can all be overwhelming.

I just kept asking myself, “Why am I here? Why I am in this position? Who are the people around me?”

Miss Philippines Catriona Gray, a 24-year-old professional model and musician, was crowned Miss Universe 2018 this morning, beating 93 other contestants at the beauty pageant held at Impact, Muang Thong Thani in Bangkok.

The first and second runners up were Miss South Africa Tamaryn Green and Miss Venezuela Sthefany Gutierrez respectively. Miss Thailand Sopida Kanchanarin was among the top 10 finalists.

Each of the top three finalists go through to the “Final Words” contest, answering the question “What’s the most important lesson you’ve learned in your life and how would you apply it to your time as Miss Universe?”

“I’ve worked a lot in the slums in Manila and life there is poor and very sad but I always taught myself to look for the beauty in it – to look at the beauty in the faces of the children and to be grateful. As Miss Universe I want to show the silver lining in these situations and assert where I can give something, where I can provide something as the spokesperson. And then I think if I can teach people to be grateful, we could have an amazing world where negativity could not grow and children have a smile on their faces,” Gray answered.

Gray is the fourth Filipina to bring home the coveted title, joining Gloria Diaz, Margie Moran, and Pia Wurtzbach who won in 1969, 1973, and 2015, respectively.

Taiwan’s residents turn to claw cranes as a cheap form of entertainment

AS TAIWAN’S economy stagnates, claw crane arcades where customers lower a grabber to try to pick up a prize from a glass box are booming as affordable entertainment, while operators see them as a way to make a fast buck.

According to official figures, there is one claw crane outlet for every two convenience stores in Taiwan, with the number more than doubling last year to become the fourth largest tax income source in the entertainment industry.

Women play a claw crane machine in Taipei./AFP

The concept is simple – for as little as TW$10 (Bt10), customers manually lower a metal claw into a pile of prizes, which are usually soft toys, but can also include electronic gadgets and fashion accessories.

Some claw machines stand in the corner of neighbourhood grocery stores, while others sit in rows in brightly lit arcades spread out in residential and entertainment districts alike.

A whole culture has built up around the craze – enthusiasts give online tutorials on how to most effectively manoeuvre the claw while other websites are devoted to swapping toy prizes.

For Albee Chou, 34, playing the crane machine in her neighbourhood arcade in Taipei is a cheap way to find a gift for her daughter. A skilled player, she quickly picks up a few Hello Kitty storage boxes.

“It’s actually cheaper than buying from a shop. Plus, it’s more fun,” said Chou.

The toy claw evolved from “digger” machines in 1930s America. The early versions were purely mechanical in design and picked up candy.

A more sophisticated electric version quickly spread to Asia in the late 1970s and the last few years have seen a surge in popularity in Taiwan and South Korea.

With salaries failing to keep up with the cost of living in Taiwan, players see the machines as inexpensive entertainment while operators consider them an effective investment.

Vendors usually look for a good location and stock it with claw machines, which in turn are subleased to individual operators.

An elementary school student holds the prizes he won from a claw crane machine at a store in the Xizhi district in New Taipei City./AFP

Nick Chang, 31, leased two claw machines inside a recently opened arcade in a Taipei residential district.

Like most neighbourhood arcades, the 40 toy claws inside are sublet to various owners who then stock them with toys of their choice. Rental fees for each console range between TW$3000 in this arcade to TW$10,000 in busy entertainment districts.

Chang has stocked his claw machine with Japanese action figures.

“I don’t have to be in the shop 24 hours a day which means I can keep my full-time job,” says Chang who works as a magazine photographer.

He makes around TW$10,000 monthly profit per machine, which is more than most operators.

The average monthly revenue for a machine is only about TW$5000, but with Taiwan’s average monthly income including bonuses stuck at TW$50,000, many feel it is a decent return.

“I make more because I am constantly looking for cheaper sources for my toys and I have many returning customers,” Chang says.

Finding the right prize can be key – Ken Chuang, 38, has a claw machine inside the same arcade as Chang. Once he stocked it with underwear resembling Calvin Klein briefs, and found it emptied after two hours.

“Someone must have thought they were the real thing!” he laughs.

There are more than 100 Facebook pages in Taiwan dedicated to claw machines with tens of thousands of members who share their experiences and tips on the latest trends and swap merchandise.

The craze has even prompted Taiwan’s Central Bank to announce that it will issue more TW$10 coins in 2019 to meet demand sparked by the game.

Lo Chi-fu, a radio presenter who hosts a financial programme, says young people are particularly drawn to supplementing poor incomes and often club together with friends to lease a machine, though he feels the number of machines in Taiwan markets has reached saturation point.

But for some it’s simply about the buzz of playing.

Restaurant worker Steven Wu, in his twenties, has just spent six hours playing and admits he has spent “quite a lot”.

“It’s like winning the lottery,” he enthuses.

“The thrill when the prize falls into the chute.”

Enjoy free admission to Thon Buri Palace this month

Travel log December 17, 2018 09:37

The Phra Racha Wang Derm or Thon Buri Palace is offering free admission from December 15 to 28, 2018 to commemorate King Taksin The Great on the occasion of the 250th anniversary of the establishment of Krung Thonburi Sri Mahasamut.

The Palace was built during the reign of King Taksin The Great as a royal residence, during the time that Thonburi was the capital of Siam. Its location was strategically significant, at the mouth of the canal and with a fort nearby looking out over the surrounding area that was renovated and renamed Wichai Prasit Fort. The palace is also the birthplace of many Thai kings, including King Nangklao, King Mongkut and King Pinklao.

Important historical areas inside Phra Racha Wang Derm or Thon Buri Palace include the throne hall, the throne room, the double palace, the royal palace, the shrine of the king and the greenhouse.

The Throne Hall was divided into two segments, the first being ‘Tong Prarong’, the throne room or ‘Winitchai’, a Thai-style pavilion used for holding council and royal ceremonies of the Thonburi Kingdom and which nowadays is used by the Royal Thai Navy for important events and ceremonies. The other segment, ‘Ratchamontien’ (royal residence) or ‘Pra Tee Nungkwang’, is also used today to welcome VIPs and for meetings on certain occasions.

Apart from the Throne Hall, there are also two small Chinese-style residences of King Pinklao. Inside the smaller one is an exhibition on King Taksin The Great’s royal duties regarding wars, while the bigger residence exhibits his royal duties regarding society, economy, culture and international affairs. At the shrine is the statue of the king holding a sword.

Normally, advance permission of up to two weeks is required to visit the palace as it is located within the compound of The Royal Thai Navy Headquarters. Also, only group visits are allowed with an entry fee of 100 Baht for adults and 60 Baht for children.

Visitors may also want to visit The ‘Sri Mahasamut Ship’ floating museum, built by ICONSIAM to commemorate King Taksin The Great on the occasion of the 250thanniversary of the establishment of Krung Thonburi Sri Mahasamut.

Manchester United sack Mourinho in bid to turn season round

sports December 19, 2018 06:09

By AFP

Manchester United sacked manager Jose Mourinho on Tuesday after the club’s worst start to a season in nearly three decades, hoping to bring about a radical change in atmosphere and the direction of the club.

Mourinho, 55, became increasingly spiky in his last few months at Old Trafford, lashing out at the board’s transfer policy and turning his fire on his squad, especially record signing Paul Pogba.

His constant complaints about the players’ lack of desire had an impact on the pitch, culminating in the 3-1 defeat by Premier League leaders Liverpool on Sunday which left United 19 points behind their opponents.

Mourinho’s sacking comes just two-and-a-half years into his tenure and three years and a day since Chelsea dismissed him just months after he had guided them to the title.

Former United striker Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, currently in charge of Norwegian club Molde, is reportedly being considered for the role of caretaker manager until the end of the season.

Mourinho’s dismissal saw shares in the US-owned club rise on Wall Street by more than five percent to $18.18.

Former players such as Rio Ferdinand and Patrice Evra expressed hope a change in management would bring a marked change in atmosphere.

“The club needs an injection of positivity and hopefully this decision will allow that to happen,” Ferdinand posted on Instagram.

Mourinho’s old sparring partner Pep Guardiola insisted he took no satisfaction from seeing his rival dismissed.

Guardiola and Mourinho were often at loggerheads during their time at Barcelona and Real Madrid respectively, but had a more cordial relationship in Manchester.

“When it happens I’m sad for the managers, all the time,” Guardiola said after City‘s League Cup quarter-final win over Leicester.

“We are alone. For the manager, when the situation is not good, we are alone.

“You know what happens when you are sacked, because the results maybe are not good.

“Of course he doesn’t need luck because he’s so strong and I wish him all the best and soon he is going to come back.”

United’s worst start in the league since 1990 means even Mourinho’s ambition of finishing in the top four and a Champions League qualification spot is in danger.

The club has reached the Champions League knockout stages, where they face an intimidating last-16 tie with Paris Saint-Germain, but a combination of poor results, dressing-room discord and criticism of the board proved potent factors in the decision to dismiss the Portuguese manager.

A United source told AFP that Mourinho had been supported in his efforts to sign players and described reports of player power at the club as being key to the sacking as wide of the mark.

– ‘Outstanding candidate’ –

In the longer term former Real Madrid coach Zinedine Zidane has been linked to the club as has his fellow 1998 World Cup-winning team-mate Laurent Blanc, who played for United. Tottenham Hotspur manager Mauricio Pochettino is also strongly tipped.

One bookmaker makes Pochettino the early favourite although the 46-year-old Argentinian refused to be drawn on the speculation.

“We know a lot of rumours happen. But it’s not my business what happens in another club now,” he said at a press conference on Tuesday.

Mourinho’s reign had started well enough with the League Cup and the Europa League trophies but for a club that has been champions of England 20 times, neighbours Manchester City‘s dominance over them in the league has hurt.

Despite his protestations to the contrary, the United board gave Mourinho plenty of money to compete.

– Deteriorating relationship –

Top-quality players such as Belgian striker Romelu Lukaku — who he persuaded to snub Chelsea and come to United for £75 million in 2017 — and Pogba for a then world record fee of £89 million in 2016 have floundered under his authoritarian stewardship.

Indeed it was Mourinho’s deteriorating relationship with World Cup-winning midfielder Pogba — one of many to feel the lash of his tongue in public — that symbolised the decline at the club under him.

Mourinho questioned his attitude while the player hit back with open criticism of the tactics, culminating in him kicking his heels on the bench during the Liverpool debacle on Sunday.

The manager’s overall Premier League points haul of 176 since his appointment by United lagged behind City, Liverpool, Tottenham and Chelsea during the same period.

There was sympathy too for Mourinho, including from Jurgen Klopp, whose Liverpool side had sealed his fate and whose positive football exposed painfully the negative tactics of the United manager.

“Nobody can take away all the things he has won. I hope he has that on his mind as he leaves. He is an outstanding manager.”

Man City survive shoot-out to reach League Cup semis

Manchester City survived a penalty shoot-out to reach the League Cup semi-finals as young keeper Arijanit Muric starred in the dramatic finale to the holders’ win over Leicester on Tuesday.

Pep Guardiola’s side took the lead when Kevin De Bruyne marked his return from injury with a fine finish in the first half at the King Power Stadium.

Marc Albrighton cancelled out De Bruyne’s first goal since April with a late equaliser to set up the 3-1 shoot-out win.

Muric, making his second City appearance in place of the rested Ederson, stole the spotlight as the 20-year-old Kosovo international made two penalty saves to clinch his team’s last four berth.

Just hours after Guardiola’s old rival Jose Mourinho was sacked by Manchester United after their worst start for 28 years, City could afford to make eight changes and still went through as they chase the third trophy of the Guardiola era.

No wonder City fans cheekily chanted “bring back Mourinho”.

“A tough game, it is always difficult at Leicester. We played with a guy (Eric Garcia) who is 17 years old and some injured players, but it was a good game,” Guardiola said.

De Bruyne added: “I feel stiff but I am happy to contribute. To be out for so long and to play 70 minutes is a good sign for me.

“We want to win titles so there’s two games more and we can battle for another trophy.”

City had 87 percent of the possession in the early stages and their pressure was rewarded in the 14th minute.

De Bruyne took control on the left edge of the Leicester area, cleverly shifted the ball onto his right foot before unleashing a low drive that zipped through the legs of Hamza Choudhury and past goalkeeper Danny Ward.

It was a cathartic moment for De Bruyne in only his seventh appearance of a frustrating season ravaged by two knee injuries.

The Belgium midfielder was making his first start since being injured in City’s League Cup win over Fulham on November 1.

Riyad Mahrez was making his first return to Leicester following his move to City in the close-season.

The Algeria winger almost doubled City’s lead when he pounced on Brahim Diaz’s shot and smashed a volley just over.

Muric kept his side’s lead intact when he sprawled to the left to repel a long-range drive from Demarai Gray that appeared destined for the bottom corner.

– Muric shines –

Sergio Aguero, back from an injury that sidelined him for three weeks, should have put City two up moments after half-time.

However, the Argentine forward shot too close to Ward after running onto Mahrez’s pass.

Leicester drew level in the 73rd minute when Wilfred Ndidi lofted a pass that picked out Albrighton’s run behind Oleksandr Zinchenko and the substitute slammed a fierce strike into the far corner.

Guardiola’s men had beaten Leicester on penalties at the same stage of the League Cup last season.

Leicester had more recent spot-kick success after beating Wolves and Southampton on penalties in the previous two rounds, but it was City who prevailed again.

Leicester’s Christian Fuchs and City’s Raheem Sterling both shot over.

Muric seized the moment with saves to deny James Maddison and Caglar Soyuncu before Zinchenko drilled in the winner.

Third tier Burton are into the semi-final for the first time in their history after a shock 1-0 win at Championship promotion chasers Middlesbrough.

Sixth in the second tier, Middlesbrough made a host of changes and were punished by their lowly opponents.

Burton, 15th in League One, are the first team from the third tier or lower to reach the semi-finals since Sheffield United in 2014-15.

Jake Hesketh put Nigel Clough’s side into the lead in the 48th minute, the on-loan Southampton midfielder firing home from the edge of the area.

Clough won the League Cup twice as a player with Nottingham Forest in 1989 and 1990

The Kingdom’s football team will wear their brand new jerseys called Changsuek (War Elephants) The First Eleven in the upcoming Asian Cup game as former SEA Games coach Choketawee Promrut has been recruited as assistant coach.

The new outfits produced by Warrix under the Combatec7 technology, also used by many world’s leading teams, have been designed under the concept called Now Or Never which is to show continuous support for the national football team after recent downfall in the ASean Cup.

“We have come up with three designs – the Player Jersey, Replica Jersey and Cheer Jersey – which are available already. The national jerseys will be worn for the first time during the Asian Cup game with India on January 6,” said Wisarn Wanasaksrisakul, managing director of Warrix Sport.

National stars including team captain Chalermpong Kerdkaew, midfielders Thitipan Puangchan, Tanaboon Kesarat and Thanasit Siriphala, and striker Sriroch Chatthong were among those sporting the 2019 jerseys for Tuesday’s media conference at Stadium One Project, Bangkok.

Meanwhile football chief Somyot Poompanmoung said former national defender Choketawee and Julio Cesar Moreno Yanez of Chile, Serbia’s assistant coach at the World Cup in Russia, had been called up to help head coach Milovan Rajevac for the Asian Cup, which will be played from January 5 – February 1 in the United Arab Emirates.

“Choketawee is quite familiar with more than 10 players in the team. Having him will help with the communication aspects between Rajevac and the players,” said Somyot.

“Julio is an expert on game and player analysis. I’m just trying to strengthen the national team in every aspect so we can live up to the expectations of the fans.”

Choketawee, who managed Thailand to the SEA Games gold medal in 2015, thanked the Football Association of Thailand for the opportunity. “I hope to use my experience to help the young players regain their confidence for the tournament,” said the 44-year-old, who was part of the SEA Games gold medal team in 1995, 1997 and 1999.

Tanaboon, who played in the AFF Suzuki Cup home game that ended with a humiliating defeat to Malaysia on the away-goals rule, hoped to redeem the nation’s pride in the Asian Cup.

“Of course there is a load of pressure out there as fans want us to do better in the Asian Cup,” he said. “We players learned our lesson and will have to play at our best to achieve our goals.”

Somyot Poompanmoung
