Apple to roll out new Snoopy, Peanuts cartoon series

New York

Apple will produce a new animated series starring Snoopy and the Peanuts gang, created by the late American cartoonist Charles Schulz, for its video platform, a source close to the deal said Friday, confirming press reports.

The agreement was reached with Apple, “in a highly competitive environment” and at the expense of other candidates, with the Canadian group DHX Media, which holds 80% of the rights of Snoopy and Peanuts, said the source.

DHX bought this stake, as well as rights to Peanuts gang member Peppermint Patty, for $345 million in 2017.

The commitment is for DHX to produce a new animated series, specials and short programs around the Peanuts gang, a bunch of kids with the dog Snoopy.

The Canadian group will also create educational programs including the Peanuts gang, exclusively for Apple, around space and the conquest of space.

The agreement between Apple and DHX Media is another example of the Apple brand’s ambition, given the launch, announced by several media in 2019, of its own video-on-demand service offering exclusive content.

Until now, the video content available on the iTunes platform was produced by third parties and accessible one by one, not as a subscription.

Schulz wrote and illustrated the Peanuts cartoon strip starting in 1950. The final strip ran in newspapers one day after his death in February 2000, according to the Charles M. Schulz Museum.

Thailand December 17, 2018 13:29

By The Nation

Thai Airways International (THAI) has launched a new “Thai Airways” mobile application, with a new look that makes the customer travel experience more comfortable and convenient.

The new mobile application increases channels for more customer reach as well as customer service.

“The new developed application under the name ‘Thai Airways’ improves the customer travel experience, making it more convenient for return customers as the new app will save information from previous searches and the passenger’s past travel itineraries. The application makes it easier for customers to make reservations, payments, check-in, and check other information before and after the journey, as well as other THAI promotions and special offers,” says Wiwat Piyawiroj, Executive Vice President, Commercial.

The new mobile application offers new capabilities, such as flight information and travel itinerary, travel reminder, Royal Orchid Plus membership services, E-Boarding Pass within the application, displaying flight details on smart watches that are linked with the application, and other services such as hotel reservation, car rental, and travel insurance.

Passengers who apply for Royal Orchid Plus membership from today onward, then log-in, make flight reservations through the Thai Airways mobile application, and travel with THAI will receive 3,500 miles.

The Thai Airways mobile application may be downloaded through the App Store (iOS operating system) and through Google Play (Android operating system).

Liverpool draw Bayern as United face PSG in Champions League last 16

Liverpool will take on fellow five-time winners Bayern Munich in the last 16 of the Champions League, while Jose Mourinho’s struggling Manchester United face French giants Paris Saint-Germain.

Holders Real Madrid were paired with Ajax in Monday’s draw in Nyon as the Spaniards attempt to lift the trophy for the fifth time in six seasons, while Lionel Messi and Barcelona will play Lyon.

Both Liverpool and Bayern have a rich tradition in the competition, with Jurgen Klopp returning to his homeland to face the side that beat his Borussia Dortmund team in the 2013 final.

Liverpool, defeated finalists last season, are the current form side of the two and sit top of the Premier League while Bayern have been far short of their own high standards in the Bundesliga this term.

“That’s the team of the hour, the league leaders in England, they are playing really good football, very physical, really stepping it up. We are looking forward to it,” Bayern sporting director Hasan Salihamidzic said of the tie with Liverpool.

“A tough cookie, but that’s something to look forward to as a player.”

Klopp said: “It will be a tough one, an interesting one, and I am looking forward to it.”

– Ronaldo awaits –

Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City take on German side Schalke 04 while Atletico Madrid, runners-up in 2014 and 2016, come up against Cristiano Ronaldo and Italian heavyweights Juventus.

“A very difficult match, with few goals,” Juve vice-president Pavel Nedved predicted.

“No doubt Cristiano is the man of the Champions League, he has always shown that, with goals and victories. Our team is very strong and we can be calm and confident.”

Bundesliga leaders Dortmund will meet Tottenham Hotspur for the second season in a row, having faced each other in last year’s group stage, while Roma meet two-time former champions Porto.

“We’ve already met them (Tottenham) twice. A strong opponent, the chances are at 50-50. The team has top players. We are also strong, it will be interesting,” Dortmund CEO Hans-Joachim Watzke told Sky.

United, at a low ebb after Sunday’s 3-1 defeat to Liverpool, meet PSG for the first time and a formidable task awaits against a side featuring Neymar and Kylian Mbappe — the world’s two most expensive players.

“It’s always difficult to play Manchester United,” said PSG boss Thomas Tuchel.

“They have lots of experience in this competition, they’ve won it numerous times. It’s always difficult to play at Old Trafford, it’s always a big challenge.

“It’s the same thing against Mourinho. He has lots of experience in this competition and you must have respect,” he added.

The Red Devils have only managed one win in four fixtures in December but the club’s former player Dennis Irwin says there’s plenty of time to improve ahead of facing the French champions.

“There’s two months to go, hopefully we can pick up some form before that,” he told broadcaster BT Sport

“The last month or so has been sticky for us. We have to concentrate on the Premier League now and the FA Cup in January,” he added.

– ‘Winter break’ boost –

Manchester City’s director of football Txiki Begiristain warned the English champions will not have it easy against a Schalke outfit languishing in 13th place in Germany following a nightmare start.

“Teams that have been struggling in their leagues have still they’ve done very well in the Champions League,” said Begiristain.

“Schalke will be difficult. After a winter break, German clubs are always very dangerous.”

Lyon coach Bruno Genesio says his team can draw on their group-stage displays against City — a 2-1 away win and 2-2 home draw — ahead of their clash with five-time European champions Barca.

“We’ll need to pull off two big performances, in the first leg and in the return, but we can do it. We did it against City,” said Genesio.

“It’s tough. They are a team that Lyon has already played against but never beaten. Barca are more experienced and stronger but over two matches anything is possible,” Gerard Houllier, who holds an advisory role at the French club, told RMC Sport.

“The first match is key and we are playing at home. Barca are potential champions. We have nothing to lose. Everything is a bonus for Lyon.”

Teams that finished in second place in the group stage will host the first legs on February 12/13 and 19/20 with the return matches scheduled for March 5/6 and 12/13.

WTA confirms reforms for returning players’ rankings

sports December 18, 2018 06:26

By The Nation

A series of rule changes making it easier for women to return after pregnancy or injury was ratified on Monday by the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA).

Players making their way back to competition after being out for 52 weeks or longer will be able to use their previous ranking to enter 12 tournaments over a three-year period.

Serena Williams was at the centre of a controversy at the 2018 French Open as the former world number one was not given a seed status after missing more than a year of competition to give birth to a daughter.

But a month later, she was given a seeding of 25 for Wimbledon despite being ranked 181st in the world.

The WTA also announced women will be allowed to wear leggings or compression shorts without a skirt, dress or shorts over them.

Williams, who has 23 Grand Slam titles to her name raised eyebrows with an outfit dubbed as a ‘cat-suit’ at Rolland-Garros this year, and the French Open later said it would introduce a dress code.

Jakarta – John Catlin’s outstanding breakout year has not gone unnoticed by his peers, as he has been named the Players’ Player of the Year for the 2018 Asian Tour season.

The American golfer beat the likes of India’s Shubhankar Sharma, Thailand’s Kiradech Aphibarnrat, Korea’s Sanghyun Park and South Africa’s Justin Harding to win the award, which was presented by Dr Chris Gisi, Chief Executive Officer, Rolex Southeast Asia at the Asian Tour Gala Awards in Jakarta.

Catlin’s successful season marked an amazing turnaround since he lost his Tour card in 2016.

The 27-year-old made a career breakthrough in May when he won his maiden Asian Tour title at the Asia-Pacific Classic in China. Two months later, Catlin won his second Tour title at the Sarawak Championship in Malaysia and in October, he was victorious yet again at the Yeangder Tournament Players Championship in Chinese Taipei.

With that, Catlin became the 10th golfer in Tour history to win three times in a single season.

“It has been a special year. It’s always special to get into the winner’s circle and to do it multiple times is just unbelievable. Winning three times is very surreal,” he said.

Sharma clinched the number one spot on the Asian Tour Habitat for Humanity Standings with earnings of US$755,994. He became the fifth, and youngest Indian national to win the Order of Merit title.

Sanghyun Park was awarded the Rookie of the Year. The Korean was dominant at his home events, winning twice and finishing second in the three tournaments held in the Land of the Morning Calm. Park is placed second on the merit list with earnings of US$566,211.

Sri Lanka’s Anura Rohana was the most accurate off the tee (92%) while Mauritius Open champion Kurt Kitayama was the farthest (315.36 yards).

Thai Settee Prakongvech was the top scrambler after converting 69.8% of his missed greens in regulation to save par this season. Compatriot Thammanoon Sriroj was the hottest putter on Tour, averaging 26.4 putts per round.

Scott Vincent of Zimbabwe topped the birdie charts at 306. American Paul Peterson, who won his maiden Tour title at the LeoPalace21 Myanmar Open, hit the most greens-in-regulation (75%) while Australian Jake McLeod had the lowest stroke average (69.04)

ASIA’S NUMBER ONE SHARMA FINDS SUCCESS WITH FAMILY BY HIS SIDE

Jakarta – As they say, home is where the heart is and for newly-crowned Asian Tour Order of Merit winner Shubhankar Sharma, home, and a loving family inspired him to a wildly successful 2018.

The 22-year-old Indian secured his top spot on the Asian Tour Habitat for Humanity Standings following the proceedings at the South African Open to cap off a brilliant year.

He said: “2018 is the year that I’ll remember for the rest of my life. I’ve played all the Majors, all the WGCs and won the Arjuna Award as well as the Asian Tour Order of Merit.

“I’ve always dreamt of winning the Order of Merit since turning professional in 2013. I used to watch the Asian Tour on TV, seeing the likes of Jyoti Randhawa, Arjun Atwal, Jeev Milkha Singh and Anirban Lahiri, who have all won the merit title. I am honoured to be part of that illustrious list.”

His victory at the Maybank Championship in February was undoubtedly pivotal to him winning the merit title and unsurprisingly, that particular tournament stood out for him the most.

“The most memorable moment for me this year was winning the Maybank Championship. That started things off for me,” explained Sharma, with a smile.

Sharma credits his success to his family, who have given him unconditional support on and off the golf course. They accompanied him on his Major debut at the Masters. Their presence kept him grounded and lifted him spiritually.

“I’m really happy that the whole family enjoyed themselves at Augusta National. My sister, whom I share a very close bond with, wrote a piece to Associated Press documenting my journey. I’m very glad she’s recognised for her talent.”

He added: “My family has always supported me. You always need a team; you can’t do it alone.

“They’ve been there ever since I started golf. It has been a great deal for them; it was good news after good news. Everyone was glued onto the TV if they are not on the course. I owe a lot of my success to my family.”

With the coming to an end, Sharma has already set his sights on accomplishing even greater goals in 2019.

“Playing in all four Majors again will be my number one goal. I am also aiming to play well in Europe and finishing in the Race to Dubai in a strong position.”

He may be competing all over the world, but he will always keep the Asian Tour in mind.

“I’ll definitely support the Asian Tour as much as I can. This is my home, and this is where I started playing.”

Washington careens toward government shutdown with no deal in sight

Washington careens toward government shutdown with no deal in sight

Breaking News December 18, 2018 08:01

By Agence France-Presse
Washington

An intensifying spending standoff sent US lawmakers scrambling Monday to avert a partial government shutdown, with Republican and Democratic leaders deadlocked over President Donald Trump’s demands for border wall funding.

As Washington barreled toward a shuttering of key federal agencies in just four days, the White House appeared dug in on Trump’s call for Congress to budget $5 billion in 2019 to fund a wall on the US-Mexico border that he insists will check illegal immigration.

If no breakthrough is reached, the shutdown would occur over the Christmas holiday — when most lawmakers flee the US Capitol — leaving Washington red-faced at the end of the year.

The closure could potentially spill into early January, when the new Congress — including a Democratically-controlled House of Representatives — is sworn in.

Lawmakers involved in funding negotiations suggested the first move would have to come from Trump’s team.

“We’ll see soon, but the clock’s ticking away,” Republican Senate Appropriations Committee Chairman Richard Shelby told reporters.

Democrats are united in their opposition to Trump’s ask, saying their intent is to vote for no more than $1.6 billion in border security funding as laid out in bipartisan Senate legislation earlier this month.

Trump launched a fresh attack on the opposition party and its offer of wall-less border security funding.

“Anytime you hear a Democrat saying that you can have good Boarder (sic) Security without a Wall, write them off as just another politician following the party line,” he tweeted.

White House senior advisor Stephen Miller said Sunday that building the wall remained a top priority and that Trump was “absolutely” prepared to shut down government to achieve that goal.

– Not enough votes –

Last week, a defiant Trump said he would be “proud” to shutter the government over border security.

Top Senate Democrat Chuck Schumer stressed there are not enough votes in Congress to pass wall funding, and that it would be up to Trump to repeal his demand.

“President Trump still doesn’t have a plan to keep the government open. In fact, the only indication he has given is that he wants a government shutdown,” Schumer said on the Senate floor.

Democrats have made two offers to Trump, Schumer said: pass a funding stopgap, known as a continuing resolution (CR), for the unfunded agencies for the remainder of the fiscal year through September 2019, or fund most of the agencies and pass a CR for homeland security.

“His temper tantrum will get him a shutdown, but it will not get him a wall,” Schumer said. “It’s futile.”

The window for action is narrow. The House is off until Wednesday evening, leaving very limited time before funding for the Department of Homeland Security, the Justice Department and other agencies expires Friday at midnight.

Some members of Congress have told US media they see little chance of reaching a compromise in the coming days and have advocated for a short-term stopgap spending bill that would punt the problem until January.

Complicating the stalemate, several of the 100-plus lawmakers who are either retiring at year’s end or lost their seats in November’s midterm elections, mainly Republicans, may not be fully motivated to return to Washington this week for a final federal spending vote.

“Many of them don’t want to come back,” Schumer noted.

Should a shutdown occur, it would be relatively limited, as Congress has already funded 75 percent of government operations through September.

But Americans have little appetite for the standoff, and Trump would likely suffer if the government closed temporarily, polls show.

Forty-three percent of respondents said they would blame Trump and Republicans for a shutdown, compared to 24 percent blaming Democrats, according to a USA Today/Suffolk University Poll. Thirty percent would blame both equally.

Gender equality at work more than 200 years off: WEF

Gender equality at work more than 200 years off: WEF

ASEAN+ December 18, 2018 07:06

By Agence France-Presse
Geneva

Women may be shouting louder than ever for equal treatment and pay, but a report out Tuesday indicates it will take centuries to achieve gender parity in workplaces around the globe.

The World Economic Forum (WEF) report said there had been some improvements in wage equality this year compared to 2017, when the global gender gap widened for the first time in a decade.

But it warned that these were offset by declining representation of women in politics, coupled with greater inequality in their access to health and education.

At current rates, the global gender gap across a range of areas will not close for another 108 years, while it is expected to take 202 years to close the workplace gap, WEF found.

The Geneva-based organisation’s annual report tracked disparities between the sexes in 149 countries across four areas: education, health, economic opportunity and political empowerment.

After years of advances in education, health and political representation, women registered setbacks in all three areas this year, WEF said.

Only in the area of economic opportunity did the gender gap narrow somewhat, although there is not much to celebrate, with the global wage gap narrowing to nearly 51 percent.

And the number of women in leadership roles has risen to 34 percent globally, WEF said.

But at the same time, the report showed that there are now proportionately fewer women than men participating in the workforce, suggesting that automation is having a disproportionate impact on jobs traditionally performed by women.

And women are significantly under-represented in growing areas of employment that require science, technology, engineering and mathematics skills, WEF said.

It decried the particularly low participation of women within the artificial intelligence field, where they make up just 22 percent of the workforce.

Big regional differences

“This gap is three times larger than in other industry talent pools,” the WEF statement pointed out.

“In addition to being outnumbered three to one, women in AI are less likely to be positioned in senior roles,” it said, stressing the “clear need for proactive measures to prevent a deepening of the gender gap in other industries where AI skills are in increasing demand.”

The situation varies greatly in different countries and regions.

For instance, while Western European countries could close their gender gaps within 61 years, countries in the Middle East and North Africa will take 153 years, the report estimated.

Overall, the Nordic countries once again dominated the top of the table: men and women were most equal in Iceland, followed by Norway, Sweden and Finland.

Syria, Iraq, Pakistan and finally Yemen showed the biggest overall gender gaps of the countries surveyed.

Among the world’s 20 leading economies, France fared the best, taking 12th place overall, followed by Germany in 14th place, Britain in 15th, Canada in 16th and South Africa in 19th.

The United States continued its decline, slipping two places to 51st, with the report in particular blaming “a decrease in gender parity in ministerial-level positions.”

UN condemns North Korean human rights violations

Breaking News December 18, 2018 06:44

By Agence France-Presse
United Nations, United States

The United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution Monday condemning the “systematic, widespread and gross” human rights violations in North Korea.

The non-binding resolution, which was passed by consensus without a vote, welcomes diplomatic efforts to end the crisis on the Korean peninsula.

But it emphasizes that members are “deeply concerned at the grave human rights situation, the pervasive culture of impunity and the lack of accountability for human rights violations in the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea.”

It also denounces the use of torture as well as “inhumane conditions of detention, rape, public executions, extrajudicial and arbitrary detention” and “the existence of an extensive system of political prison camps.”

Pyongyang’s mission to the UN attacked the US’s willingness to organize a Security Council meeting on human rights in North Korea.

In early December, Washington had given up asking for the meeting, which had been held every year since 2014, because it was unsure of the support it would get from partners.

But the US hopes to hold the meeting in January with the arrival of new non-permanent council members that could be more favorable to doing so.

“The UN Security Council is neither a place for discussion on any human rights issue nor a platform where a human rights issue is politicized to flare up confrontation,” North Korea’s UN mission said in a statement.

“The UN Security Council should not be misused as a platform again where US’s high-handedness and arbitrary practice would prevail, and should remain true to its mission and duties as enshrined in the UN Charter,” it said.

Jesuits release list of 89 US priests accused of sex abuse

ASEAN+ December 18, 2018 06:35

By Agence France-Presse
Chicago

Jesuit authorities for 20 US states on Monday released the names of 89 priests with credible allegations of child sexual abuse dating as far back as 1950.

The disclosures by the Jesuit provinces of Maryland and USA Midwest are the latest chapter in the ongoing sexual abuse scandal roiling the Catholic Church and come after 153 Jesuits were publicly identified by two other provinces earlier this month.

Maryland released 24 names with allegations dating back to 1950 and USA Midwest released 65 names dating back to 1955. Many of the individuals are deceased, and some were previously publicly known to be accused of sexual assault.

“On behalf of the Midwest Jesuits, I apologize to victim-survivors and their families for the harm and suffering you have endured. Many of you have suffered in silence for decades,” Brian Paulson, head of the USA Midwest province, said in an open letter.

Jesuits are the largest male religious order in the Catholic Church, with some 16,000 members worldwide. They operate 30 colleges and 81 schools in the United States and Canada.

The names made public Monday included dozens of priests with multiple allegations of abuse who served in educational institutions.

Decades of abuse, errors dating to 1930s

The priest with the most recent allegations was Donald McGuire, who died in federal prison in 2017 while serving a 25-year sentence. His was among the names that had been previously publicized.

Numerous men have accused McGuire of molesting them when they were boys. The first allegations dated to the 1950s, when he worked at a Jesuit private high school in Chicago, and went as late as 2005.

“Most of the Jesuits on our list entered religious life from the 1930’s through the early 1960’s. In retrospect, our evaluation of candidates, as well as the training, formation, and supervision of Jesuits, was not adequate,” Paulson said.

He added that the organization had learned from its mistakes, and has improved training for Jesuits and was holding them accountable if abuse allegations are made.

The latest revelations came as religious orders are starting to face similar scrutiny to the rest of the Catholic Church and are embarking on efforts at transparency.

Lists ‘incomplete’

Earlier this month, provinces overseeing Jesuits in more than 20 western, southern and central US states released lists of 153 members accused of child sexual abuse.

The Maryland province’s leader, who is known as the provincial, said Monday’s release was meant to provide transparency and accountability, and that an external audit of the organization’s files would be conducted “to ensure that our previous reviews were both accurate and complete.”

“We are deeply sorry for the harm we have caused to victims and their families,” the provincial, Robert Hussey, said in an open letter published on the organization’s website.

“We view the disclosure today of our shameful history as part of our commitment now to preventing abuse.”

A victim’s advocacy group welcomed the disclosures, but noted that they came only after sustained public pressure, including from prosecutors.

The Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests (SNAP) criticized the Jesuit order for keeping accused priests’ names secret for decades and called for an independent investigation by law enforcement.

“Too often, lists are released that are incomplete or carefully curated by church officials, and so by inviting an independent investigation, Jesuit officials can demonstrate to parishioners and the public their commitment to transparency and healing,” SNAP said in a statement.

“Such an investigation would be the only way to determine who knew what, when they knew it, and what they chose to do with that information.”

The Catholic Church has been hit by a series of child abuse scandals in recent years, with widespread allegations of cover-ups.

In August, a devastating US report on child sex abuse claimed more than 300 “predator” priests abused more than 1,000 minors over seven decades in the state of Pennsylvania.
