A total of 94,643 orders were placed for all makes of new vehicles in November, an increase of 21.2 per cent, according to figures supplied by Toyota Motor Thailand.

In a press release issued on Friday, the company said that passenger car sales reached 35,446 units, up 12.8 per cent, while 59,197 commercial vehicles were sold, equivalent to an increase of 26.9 per cent.

TMT vice president Suraphum Udomwong said auto sales in November were up due to increased popularity in new models and increasing demand, plus continuous sales promotions by auto retailers.

From January to November, auto sales have risen by 21 per cent to 928,158 units compared to the corresponding period last year. Passenger car and commercial markets grew by 17.9 per cent and 23 per cent respectively.

“December sales are expected to continue growing thanks to signs of economic and political stability,” he said. “Government investment projects are clearer and the Thailand International Motor Expo in early December along with the promotions have benefited the auto market.”

“However there is concern over the conflict between China and the US, although it has not affected the market considerably,” Suraphum said.

Nissan Motor Thailand recently shared its plan to move Thailand towards a more electric, more connected and more autonomous future of mobility at the recent “EV Tech Forum 2018” organised by the Electric Vehicle Association of Thailand (EVAT).

In a press release issued on Friday, Peter Galli, Nissan’s vice president for communications in Thailand, said that Nissan’s goal is to help move people to a better world through more electrification, more connectivity and more autonomy through the Nissan Intelligent Mobility concept.

“The new Nissan Leaf EV, which was unveiled in Thailand at the Motor Expo late last month, won’t just transform the way people drive. It will also transform the way they live,” he said.

According to Galli, Nissan Intelligent Mobility is Nissan’s roadmap for the technology and business evolution of the automotive industry, which is making customer lives better by redefining how cars are driven, powered and integrated into society.

Dr. Yossapong Laoonual, president of EVAT, added that the Thai government aims to increase the usage of electric vehicles up to 1.2 million units by the year 2036.

“Relevant agencies including the BOI and government agencies have created a number of incentives to stimulate the growth of electric vehicles as well as recruiting various investors and manufacturers to collaborate on EV projects,” he said.

Design issues biggest problem for new car owners, study finds

Breaking News December 20, 2018 13:00

By The Nation

New-vehicle owners in Thailand are increasingly facing design-related issues, such as audio, communication, entertainment and navigation, a study revealed on Thursday.

A press release issued on Thursday by JD Power Thailand – part of the American-based global marketing information services company – said that problems per 100 vehicles (PP100) had dropped to 70 PP100 this year from 83 PP100 in 2017, with the biggest improvement in the exterior and engine/ transmission categories.

The company said that it is noteworthy that the proportion of manufacturing defects has decreased to 44 per cent of all problems in 2018, compared with 61 per cent last year. All problems are summarised as the number of problems per 100 vehicles (PP100), with lower PP100 scores indicating a lower incidence of problems and, therefore, higher initial quality.

The company’s study also found that 51 per cent of all problems experienced by new-vehicle owners are design-related, compared with 18 per cent in 2017, particularly in relation to difficulties with poor or no radio reception, cup holders that are difficult to use, air conditioning failing to reach or maintain the desired temperature and noisy brakes.

Siros Satrabhaya, Regional Director, Automotive Practice at J.D. Power, said: “As reflected by the narrowed defect problem gap across the industry, manufacturers have demonstrated their commitment to improving the build quality of their vehicles. Despite these improvements, there are still opportunities to focus on improving design quality, particularly with advanced control and display interface features, so that functions are easier to understand and operate.”

“Dealership staff play a critical role in bridging the knowledge divide by offering customers comprehensive explanations and demonstrations of more complex features during the delivery process.”

The study also found:

Manufacturer-related problems still most reported: Among the top five problems reported, three are manufacturer-related and two are design-related. The most often cited manufacturer-related problems are excessive wind noise from around the vehicle (5.8 PP100); unpleasant interior smell/ odor (3.2 PP100); and abnormal suspension noises (1.8 PP100). The most often cited design-related problems are radio with poor/ no reception (8.5 PP100); and cup holders being difficult to use (3.9 PP100).

First-time new-vehicle owners report fewer problems: Buyers purchasing their first vehicle report fewer problems than repeat buyers (68 PP100 vs. 74 PP100, respectively).

Good product quality enhances likelihood to promote brand: The Net Promoter Score®[1] (NPS) measures customers’ likelihood to recommend both their vehicle make and model on a 0-10 scale. The NPS overall score in this year’s study is 52. Promoters (new-vehicle owners who provide a rating of 9-10 points on the likelihood that they will recommend the vehicle brand) reported 61 PP100, compared with 121 PP100 reported by detractors (those who provide a rating of 0-6 points on their likelihood to recommend the brand).

THE AUTOMOTIVE industry showed signs of significant growth in November, according to Surapong Paisitpattanapong, vice president and spokesman of the Federation of Thai industries (FTI).

The total car production stood at 197,020 units in November, marking a 3.49 per cent increase year on year. Meanwhile, the in-country sales were at 94,614, increasing by 21.2 per cent year on year, while exports stood at 93,108, a 9.64 per cent increase, according to the FTI.

From January to November of 2018, a total of 1,998,339 cars were produced, marking an impressive 9.1 per cent increase year on year, said Surapong.

One factor boosting the automotive industry is the falling oil price, said Supant Mongkilsuthree, FTI chairman.

Baht depreciation

The second factor boosting the automotive industry is the depreciation of the Thai baht against the US dollar, making Thai exports more competitive.

“Another key automotive area which improved was motorcycle production and sales,” Surapong added.

In November, a total of 86,277 motorcycles were exported from the Kingdom, including both “completely built units” (CBU) and “completely knocked down” (CKD) bikes, according to figures from the FTI. It marks a 5.42 per cent increase in volume year on year.

Meanwhile, the total export of motorcycles last month hit Bt5.886 billion in value, a 10.11 per cent increase over the same period last year.

“The two key worrying factors for the automotive industries in the upcoming months are the impact of the rising interest rates that could increase the cost of manufacturers, as well as the US-China trade war that could damage exports,” Surapong said.

Ingress sees net profit growth in Q3

Listed firm Ingress Industrial (Thailand) Plc, a Pan-Asian auto-parts maker, shows total revenue of Bt912.56 million and net profit of Bt26.63 million in the third quarter of this year, or up 12.3 per cent and 1,458 per cent from the same period of last year.

The company’s chief executive officer Hamidi Bin Maulod said that this is due to the strong automotive market volume in Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia and India.

Revenues from Thai subsidiaries accounts for 32.54 per cent of the total, with Malaysia at 55.25 per cent, Indonesia at 6.38 per cent and India at 5.83 per cent.

The revenue trends from Thailand and India remain strong despite seasonal effects, he said. For the nine-month period, the firm reports Bt2.37 billion revenue, compared with revenue of Bt2.14 billion in the same period last year. Net profit for this period equals Bt48.35 million, down from Bt104.36 million in the same period last year due to higher tax expenses and loss from foreign exchange.

The company’s board of director has approved paying an interim dividend of Bt0.026 per share, totalling Bt37.62 million, to all shareholders. The company will close its shareholder book on January 3rd, 2019.

On business fundamental, the firm has continued to win new orders to produce auto parts for various automakers in many countries. The company has a capital expenditure budget of approximately Bt540 million .

“ Recently, we have started mass production for various new projects in Thailand, Indonesia and India. Therefore, we expect the strong performances, accordingly,” Bin Maulod said.

New BMW 3 Series is still ‘the driver’s car’

New BMW 3 Series is still ‘the driver’s car’

By Kingsley Wijayasinha
The Nation Weekend

Though bigger and with technology you probably won’t want, the longtime favourite still boasts its famed great handling

OVER the years, the BMW 3 Series have always set the benchmark for driving dynamics, but the new model to be introduced in Thailand next year has more to offer.

Since 1975, more than 15.5 million 3 Series models have been sold worldwide, and it is indeed the best-selling model from the Munich-based manufacturer. This is the model that the “Sheer Driving Pleasure” slogan really applies to.

But the world today is full of innovations, and despite BMW claiming that the new model is the most dynamic 3 Series ever, the car comes with a bundle of modern and innovative features that reflects the level of modern technology put into the seventh-generation 3 Series.

As the world gears up for autonomous drive, the new 3 Series also gives you a taste of that, offering a good number of driverless features, and there is even a BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant that actually talks to you. This is a digital personality that reminds you of KITT from Knight Rider (or Siri for the new generation). In this case it is a lady’s voice (you can name her apart from the default “BMW”) and does many things for you, ranging from car systems to onboard entertainment and even making dinner reservations.

The new 3 Series was unveiled at the Paris Motor Show in October this year, and will be marketed around the world starting from March 2019. The global media drive event has been taking place during the past month in Portugal with the 320d, 330i and 340i being offered for motoring journalists.

The 320d is the model destined for Thailand at the launch next year (I’d guess around the Bangkok Motor Show in late March).

It is powered by a turbocharged 2.0-litre common-rail diesel engine that pumps out 190 horsepower and 400Nm. Apart from the smoothness, drivers would also enjoy the nice torque delivery that gives it sports-car acceleration. The 320d takes just 6.8 seconds to get from 0-100km/h, and has a top end of 240km/h.

According to BMW, the small high-pressure turbocharger and the variable geometry turbine geometry in the larger turbocharger team up to provide instant response and maximum torque when driving “flat out”.

What you always expect from a 3 Series is great handling and the new model certainly puts a smile on your face. All sorts of improvements have been made, including upgraded chassis and damper technology, increased stiffness, wider tracks, as well as lower weight (minus 55kg) and centre of gravity. And, of course, it still has a 50-50 front-rear weight distribution.

The aerodynamics have also been improved, with the Cd being lowered from 0.26 to 0.23. This helps with lower cabin noise and better fuel economy.

Taking the 320d through winding Portuguese country roads was highly entertaining. The new damping system provides sporty driving along with better comfort, even at low speeds. There was plenty of grip during sharp corners and the car never felt nervous when changing directions quickly. It’s still the best handling car in its class.

However in terms of comfort, the suspension still felt stiff despite the new damping, and a softer setting might be more suitable for Thailand conditions.

Inside the cabin, there’s more space, but that’s also the result of a larger exterior dimensions. The new 3 Series is as big as the older 5 Series from many years ago (while the 5 Series is like an old 7 Series), and although this is also happening to other brands as well, it just puts the 3 Series into another size category for me. It surely isn’t that compact sports sedan I was used to.

Despite the driver’s car handling, the interior of the new model isn’t exactly driver-oriented, with the console appearing pretty modular, no leaning towards the driver (you’ll need two parts for left- and right-hand drive models then).

The driving position however, is pretty good and the controls are easy to use. There is more shoulder and legroom for all occupants, although at the rear it’s not that significant.

While the analogue display has been replaced with a digital screen, it would be a shock to many 3 Series fans that the format has been totally changed. No more classic amber lighting and two dials – the space between the speedo and rev counter has been widened in order to display more information. In general, the layout is pretty boring and has no relation to BMW – it looks more like something from Audi.

But wait for the worst part – the rev counter moves counter-clockwise like those British super-luxury cars. You just wonder why on earth did they want to do that?

Meanwhile, the “big small car” now comes with many driving aids. Apart from Active Cruise Control, there are also fully automated Parking Assistant Plus and Reverse Assistance functions. It is still not clear whether they will be offered in Thailand, so let’s wait until next year.

But one thing is for sure, and that’s in terms of driving performance, the new 3 Series is still the driver’s car. And that’s a reason to celebrate.

But it is also a core model from BMW that reflects the changing requirements of global customers, and is the recipient of a very high level of new technologies for the modern lifestyle. Even things you don’t need.

At the drive event in Portugal, BMW said the new 3 Series will come with more features with no price increase, making it even more attractive against competitors. It will be interesting to see what kind of features are offered in the model offered for Thailand and also whether the pricing strategy will be used here as well.

The rebranding in Thailand is expected to be completed at the 21 Nissan dealerships with used cars businesses by March 2019.
