By The Nation

Thai hotel and property development company Dusit International will make its Vietnam debut this month with the opening of the Dusit Princess Moonrise Beach Resort on the country’s largest island, Phu Quoc.

Located in southern Vietnam in the Gulf of Thailand, Phu Quoc is a fast-growing tourist destination known for its long, sweeping beaches, rich coral reefs, seafood, pearl farms and dense, tropical rainforest.

Operating under Dusit’s upper-midscale Dusit Princess brand, the new four-star resort is centrally located on the island’s west coast, overlooking stunning Bai Truong Beach, a 20-kilometre stretch of sand also known as Long Beach.

Phu Quoc International Airport (PQC) and the town of Duong To are a short drive away.

Designed to blend Dusit’s Thai heritage with Vietnamese culture and local traditions, the family-friendly resort comprises 108 well-appointed guestrooms ranging from 32-square-metre Deluxe Rooms to 90sqm Suites, most with lovely ocean views.

Dining options include an all-day-dining restaurant, a lobby lounge, a swim-up pool bar serving Thai, Vietnamese and Western cuisine, and Soi 14, a stylish beachfront bar and lounge where Thai chef Somnuck Attaworn puts a contemporary spin on Thai street-food favourites.

The centrepiece of the resort is a large infinity pool with an ocean view, set within a lush tropical garden.

Other facilities include a fully equipped gym, a kids’ club, a large ballroom accommodating up to 190 people, and the Luna Thai Spa, which offers a range of holistic treatments conducted by fully qualified and highly trained therapists.

During their stay, guests can easily arrange to visit popular local attractions such as Phu Quoc National Park, part of the Unesco-designated Kien Giang Biosphere Reserve, the sweeping and secluded Bai Sao Beach, the quirky Dinh Cau night market, and various temples.

“Perfectly equipped to meet the needs of business and leisure travellers alike, this is a stunning property in a beautiful location with gorgeous sunsets almost every day,” said general manager Markus Lohenstein.

“It’s a real honour to be tasked with debuting Dusit’s unique brand of gracious hospitality in Vietnam. I look forward to working with my team to make this resort a huge success, as we delight our guests with our distinctive service, and showcase the best the island has to offer.”

Vietnam’s Tourism Ministry aims to attract at least 500,000 foreign visitors to Phu Quoc this year.

To meet that demand, the island’s airport has opened new direct routes to Thailand, China, South Korea, Russia, Finland, Sweden, Germany and Britain.

Regular domestic flights to Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi are also available.

A visa-exempt rule grants international visitors 30 days’ access to the island upon arrival.

With 27 properties currently in operation across four brands in eight countries, Dusit International is in a significant growth phase which will see the number of Dusit properties top 70 within the next three years.

KBank has joined with Lombard Odier (Singapore) Ltd., a fully-owned subsidiary of the Lombard Odier Group, in announcing that it has successfully sold Bt30 billion of three jointly developed funds in three years.

The bank will soon be offering new funds covering high-potential markets while raising the quality of Family Wealth Planning Services for more than 30,800 High-net-worth individuals (HNWIs) in Thailand.

Jirawat Supornpaibul, Head of KBank Private Banking Business Group, reiterated the bank’s commitment to delivering excellent and comprehensive private banking services in Thailand. In 2015, KBank partnered with the Singapore unit of Lombard Odier, a Swiss private bank with 222 years experience in wealth management for global HNWI clients, to upscale its private banking services and deliver personal financial solutions tailored to the need of HNWIs in the kingdom.

Kbank’s portfolio management service follows the risk-based approach, focusing on investment risk management while offering returns that meet customers’ goals throughout their investment terms. The success of the service is reflected in the strong sales of three funds that KBank jointly developed with Lombard Odier, namely K-SGM, K-GREAT and K-APB, reaching US$1 billion or more than Bt30 bil0lion in just three years.

“The positive feedback shows that our products have met our clients’ needs,” Jirawat told reporters.

He added that KBank and Lombard Odier were now gearing up to develop more services including products to invest in potential markets, equipped with smart investment mechanisms to cater to specific client needs.

KBank Private Banking Business Group, a pioneer in Family Wealth Planning Services in Thailand, has offered the most comprehensive wealth management services over the past three years by applying Lombard Odier’s experience and valuable knowledge to local needs. The bank’s efforts resulted in recognition from the Euromoney Private Banking Survey 2018 in the category of Best Bank for Succession Planning Advice and Trusts, Thailand.

To ensure Kbank continues on its successful path, Lombard Odier has developed a training course specifically for KBank private bankers and support teams covering investment management and guidelines.

It is expected that in 2018, the number of HNWIs or clients with asset under management (AUM) of more Bt50 million in Thailand will reach 30,800. KBank is now serving 10,500 HNWI customers with total AUM of around Bt750 billion, equal to a 34-per-cent market share. KBank expects its investment products to expand by Bt20 billion

Accelerator Rise forecasts $4 bn startup ecosystem

THE NATION

CORPORATE accelerator Rise plans to steer the startup ecosystem in Thailand towards a US$4 billion valuation in 2020 under efforts to promote new ventures in the domestic and overseas markets.

Rise founder Supachai Parchariyanon said that the achievement of the US$4 billion target would equate to 1 per cent of the country’s gross domestic product.

To support this goal, Supachai said the company would pursue three strategies. First, it will collaborate with the private sector and government agencies – including banks and energy companies – to set up startup accelerators. This will help startups to use innovative and disruption technologies to boost the private and public sectors.

The company has worked with PTT Group to help develop 15 startup teams from many countries, such as Thailand, the United States, the Philippines, Malaysia, South Korea and Singapore, with a bootcamp offered under a project called D-Next by PTT Digital x Rise.

The teams will participate in the project for three months in order to maximise their potential in their chosen fields.

The startups are: Barghest Building Performance, Classwin, EcoWorth, Evercomm, Glueck Technologies, HelloGold, HitKey, NP Core, Onewatt, SalesCandy, Synaptik, Stonelab, TrackerHero, WisePass and UpUpApp.

The bootcamp will enable the teams to meet experts from a range of business fields who will share their knowledge with them. With this assistance, the startups will present their prototypes at Demo Day in July.

Second, the company has set up an academy aimed at changing the attitudes of businesses and organisations towards startups.

It has worked with businesses and organisations to establish an intra-entrepreneurship programme under which organisations will help their workers to become entrepreneurs. These organisations include Siam Cement Group and the Electronic Government Agency (EGA).

Lastly, it has created Rise Venture as a vehicle to facilitate co-creation between the public sector and startups.

High potential

“The startup market in Thailand has high potential for growth and is well regarded,” Supachai said.

“We are also partners with international governments and private companies such as those from the US, Britain, South Korea and Singapore in our efforts to drive the development of startups.

“Additionally, we feel that Thai startups should focus on the core competencies of the country, including agritech, tourismtech, and healthtech.”

He said that the company has helped |to develop around 1,000 startups in the country.

It is working towards building a startup ecosystem that will create an economic value of around US$300 million by the end of this year, Supachai said.

SINGAPORE Airlines (SIA) has added its budget brand, Scoot, to its frequent-flyer programme for small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).

From May 2, corporate members of SIA’s HighFlyer programme are able to collect points when flying on SIA or SilkAir itineraries with connections through Scoot. This will apply to eligible booking classes and destinations, SIA said in a press statement yesterday.

SIA’s HighFlyer is a corporate travel programme for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) with up to 30 travelling employees.

Corporates under the HighFlyer programme can earn five HighFlyer points for every dollar spent on tickets if their SIA or SilkAir travel itineraries include a Scoot-operated flight segment and are booked through SIA’s corporate booking platform or an appointed travel agent, SIA said.

These points, which are valid for three years, may be used as full, or part payment for SIA and SilkAir flights, upgrades, and other selected benefits. Highflyer members will also have the option to redeem HighFlyer points for travel on Scoot-operated flights later this year, SIA added.

Said Scoot’s CEO, Lee Lik Hsin: “Scoot is excited to join the HighFlyer family. Scoot offers many products and services suitable for the business traveller, such as our premium ScootBiz cabin on our 787 Dreamliner fleet, with in-seat power and Wi-Fi connectivity. Coupled with our expansive and growing network presenting spanning 63 destinations, including long-haul points like Athens, Honolulu and soon, Berlin, Scoot’s inclusion will provide greater choice and connectivity to corporates in the HighFlyer programme.”

Farmers warm to Solar Dryer Dome

Corporate May 03, 2018 01:00

THE NATION

GERMANY’s Covestro, a US$12.3 billion material science company that makes some of the world’s strongest coating and adhesives, is promoting the benefits of what it calls a breakthrough product that can boost the incomes of farmers and fishermen in Thailand.

Its Solar Dryer Dome, created first five years ago, provides a greenhouse-like shelter to dry goods, allowing sunlight through while keeping away rain and pests.

Made from what Covestro says are super-durable polycarbonates, it cuts the wastage and losses arising from the traditional method and easily doubles or triples incomes for the agrarian sector.

The invention can raise the incomes of struggling farmers and reduce the country’s ballooning household debt, recognised as a massive obstacle to the economy.

Dr Daniel Koch, managing director of Covestro Thailand, said the company has a large manufacturing plant in Maptaphut, Rayong province, where it employs 600 workers.

In the coastal province, with its orchards, farms and fishing villages, Koch saw “the big amount of waste that comes from drying food items such as shrimp, fish, fruits and vegetables”.

Covestro began seeking ways to improve living standards in the communities where its operations were located as a critical part of its corporate social responsibility programme.

“At the time we were a part of Bayer Thailand. After the split in 2015, Covestro continued to help the communities with the dome project,” Koch said.

“We found that 40 per cent or more of the crops harvested never make it to the market or dinner table. If we can salvage this portion, it automatically doubles the productivity and incomes for these communities.

“Much of the drying today is still done in the open air, often on the ground under a mat. But a large amount is eaten by pests like rodents and insect, while rain and wind can ruin the crops.”

Covestro found a capable ally in Thai inventor Dr Serm Janjai of Silpakorn University who was working on the same strategy. Serm is credited as the creator of the dome while the company lent the materials that made it durable and efficient.

The greenhouse-effect protects the dried items from the elements while utilising the maximum power of the sun, enabling high quality food that can be stored and lasts for years. This could ease food shortages in a world where undeveloped countries suffer from uncontrolled population growth amid poverty.

It took only a short time for the dome’s usefulness to be recognised abroad. It is now used and produced globally from Thailand to India and Africa.

Asean countries rich in agriculture such as Indonesia and Vietnam have quickly embraced the Thai invention to secure higher production.

“The smaller dome measuring about 15 square metres costs about 500 euros (Bt190,000). That is not cheap for many farmers. But it lasts at least 10 years,” Koch said.

“To help them gain financing, Covestro worked with Thai banks to issue the loans. So we also needed to explain to the lenders that it will work and the money will be repaid.

“When companies do CSR programmes, they must touch the people on the ground level.”

Thai saying

The Thai saying that teaching a poor man how to fish is far better to giving him free fish applies to the Convestro case where teaching people how to dry food can change their lives forever. This initiative is giving a boost to its reputation as a responsible global player. Since split from Bayer, its business ranking has soared.

To be sure, until the arrival of these domes, drying was often disorganised and not hygienic. Rice farmers still dry grains on roadsides, a practice prone to theft.

“Farmers who reap the rewards of the dome now use surplus cash to reinvest in more domes,” Koch said.

This natural cycle in capital expansion forms the pillar of prosperity in any economic order.

Moreover, it reduces the need for government assistance and costly subsidies as well as avoid the pitfalls of entitlement schemes.

Based in Luverkusen, where much of Covestro’s research is conducted, the company is also involved with United Nation initiatives to conserve and protect the planet as well as fight climate change.

In Thailand, Covestro is working with the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment.

“We recently held a week-long workshop in Rayong for students from Asean countries to learn how the Kingdom is conserving, protecting and contributing to a cleaner environment, Koch added. “ The solar dryer visiting dome is a key feature of their educational tour.

At the same time, Covestro has also published a children’s book called “Bright Minds for a Brighter Future” with cartoon characters warning about the irresponsible disposal of plastic bags. The practice harms marine life, destroying the corals that are vital food sources for plankton.

“We are doing as much as we possibly can to spread awareness,” said Koch.

In the end it is all about customer satisfaction. The people who buy the dome dried products are over the moon, appreciating its higher quality, hygiene and taste, Koch said. In the case of Rayong’s famous “kapi” or dried shrimp paste, customers are delighted by it is absence of insect parts and its appearance.

Because of the better quality, they are selling more, noted Koch. In return, more domes are bought, benefiting all, not least Covestro itself.

Kuron aims to stay atop market with plans for export drive and sharpened Web strategy

Kuron aims to stay atop market with plans for export drive and sharpened Web strategy

KURON Co Ltd, a leading manufacturer and distributor of hair styling equipment, said it plans to explore business opportunities via an export push and a stepped-up effort in online sales, managing director Norman Gaw said.

Gaw said that Kuron planned to ensure the company’s sustained growth in order to maintain the No 1 position in Thailand’s hair styling equipment market.

“We expect immense growth in the numbers of our international customers in neighbouring countries such as Malaysia, Myanmar, and Indonesia as well,” he said. “For us, the business plan is for us to stay the most trusted leader in oral care, hair styling equipment, facial care equipment and small exercise equipment in the fitness and sports segment.

“We will continue to invest in our brands so that we will be top of mind for consumers and that they will keep loving our brand, which understands our customers’ needs. We aim to help solve customers’ pain points and ultimately makes our customers happy.”

Gaw said that the company’s research found that the Asia Pacific region is the world’s largest market for hair styling equipment. Chasing this demand, the company is looking at the Asean market for its initial export focus, particularly countries such as Malaysia, Myanmar and Indonesia.

“Hopefully, we will expose our products to the international market and to accomplish this goal within the next three years,” he said.

“Export plus online sales now account for about 15 per cent of the company’s total sales. This ratio is expected to increase to 25 per cent by 2020, with the major export markets in focus as China, Vietnam, Taiwan, Greece, and Iraq.”

Gaw said that the company has kept focusing on broadening its reach in the international markets and its plans for the online market have been backed for research for some time. “Owing to the changes in customer behaviour in favour of online business, this phenomenon will help us to expand and quicken our growth in online business tremendously,” Gaw said.

“However, comparisons between the two ratios seems may be premature in terms of reaching a conclusion.

“At the moment, we still emphasise our strength in the retail markets because our Lesasha brand engages so strongly with our customers.

“But we need to accept that the changes in customer behaviour have been particularly stark over the past five years. People are now spending more of their time on their mobiles as they go online all day long. There is no doubt that we, as an investor, a business company, and an entity engaged in the marketing segment, must seek out what our customers really need.”

He said a key factor to be understood in the online market is the impact of reviews of purchased products in real time. “Since online customers can not get a feel of the real product, most of the decision making to buy the product depends upon the information disclosed in the reviews of buyers or users,” Gaw said.

“Online marketing is about the realisation of the perception on reviewed products that can answer every most likely asked question through the reviews of the products in real time.

“The proportion of our business in the online market is approximately 10 per cent, which would definitely grow to 30 per cent in the next three to five years.”

Gaw has outlined three major challenges ahead for the company:

lChanging consumers’ needs and expectations that require more niche marketing and customisation.

lTechnology disruption that changes the retail landscape which requires the company to create a new digital marketing model as well as training staff to be digital-savvy.

lCompetition from new startups, “which requires us to differentiate by demonstrating ourselves as the specialist in areas of our expertise”. There also needs to be a focusing on building a brand that can better serve customers’ unmet needs.

Other challenges include maintaining growth and profitability by being the first to launch innovative beauty gadgets while keeping the entire team motivated.

He said that the overall market of hair-styling equipment in Thailand is worth more than Bt1 billion, and its growth rate is increasing by 5 per cent each year.

“We have set a sales target of 100,000 pieces this year on a new product, Lesasha Brush2Go, as part of our plan to achieve 20 per cent sales growth in 2018,” said Gaw.

Destination Properties sees GDP growth as platform for expansion

THE NATION

DESTINATION Properties Group, a hotel and restaurant developer, has revealed an aggressive investment plan for its food and beverage (F&B) outlets in Thailand that draws on the country’s sustained economic growth and the company’s own deep roots in the market.

Thomas Pryor, executive vice president of Destination Eats, the F&B business operation of Destination Properties Group, outlined the expansion plans.

Destination Eats owns the franchises for Hooters Asia, The Drunken Leprechaun, Champions, and Hard Rock Cafe, Pryor said.

The group’s other business segment is covered by Destination Resorts, which owns of a number of resorts and hotels. The portfolio comprises Four Points by Sherton Sukhumvit Soi 15, Novotel Phuket Karon Beach, Novotel Cha-Am Beach Resort & Spa, Novotel Surin Beach Phuket, Swissotel Patong Beach, and Swissotel Resort Phuket – Kamala.

Pryor said that Destination-Eats has been enjoying rapid expansion with the Hooters brand, which accounts for over 80 per cent of the company’s restaurant operations. The group has aggressive expansion plans in place throughout Thailand and the Philippines over the next 18 months.

“Destination Resorts has hotels located in Phuket, Hua Hin, and Bangkok. Meanwhile, Destination Eats, led by the Hooters brand, currently operates five units in Thailand, and one each in Hong Kong and Jakarta in Indonesia. An outlet in Bali is under construction and will be opened in the third quarter of this year.” Pryor said.

“Another Hooters American sport bar and restaurant will be opened in Manila by the end of this year. In addition, Destination Eats also operates two Hard Rock Cafe outlets in Phuket and Samui, and another two of the company’s own brand of Irish Fun Pubs called The Drunken Leprechaun in Bangkok and Phuket.”

He said the company has ambitious plans not only for the flagship Hooters brand but also for other brands to come on board over the next 12 months.

“ With Thailand’s fast-moving, strong economy we feel it only natural to reinvest in the country where our roots are firmly planted,” Pryor said.

“We are looking to expand and diversify the brand across numerous cuisine subsections so we will have a brand for everyone. Destination Eats will further develop as a lifestyle brand over the next five years with well over 250 units spread over eight different F&B concepts.”

Pryor said that the company was continually coming up with ideas on how to attract its guests. “With Thailand being so dynamic and fast paced, and especially Bangkok, it has become a truly world-class city for hospitality in both luxury hotels and fine eating establishments,” he said.

“Sometimes it’s challenging to keep up with these ever-changing trends because as soon as they are hip they can become square again. So this is certainly challenging keeping atop all of this.

“However, our teams are always out there coming up with our own ideas and embracing some current ones as well.”

Hooters of America has announced that its franchisee Hooters Asia, owned Destination Eats, will soon throw open the doors to the brand’s sixth Thailand outlet, in the prime Silom Road area of Bangkok. “The Thaniya Street location is a CBD and tourist hot spot popular with Japanese expats. Hooters invites residents and visitors to this vibrant metropolis to come by and tuck in to some fabulous food and enjoy the world-famous Hooters Girl hospitality,” he said.

“The 465 square metre venue will seat 165, including in a bar area with space for 30, just steps from the BTS Sala Deang station, and about a five-minute walk from the Rama 4 junction-MRT Silom station.

“With 50 flat-screen TV screens located throughout the dining and bar areas, sports fans can cheer on their favourite teams while slaying the hungries with Hooters original and new-recipe smoked chicken wings.” Hooters Silom will host a soft-opening event for the Soi Taniya outlet on May 14.

Pryor said the 100 guests will receive free wings for a year. The official launch party will be on May 19.

Gary Murray, chief executive of Destination Properties Group, said: “We are very confident on the success of Hooters Silom, owing to its prime location in the Silom district on Soi Thaniya. And as Bangkok is a popular holiday destination, there are a lot of tourists in this area, along with Japanese expats and visitors who are drawn to Hooters’ fun atmosphere and outstanding food.

“We have been very pleased with how well our five existing Thailand outlets have done, and we look forward to working with our partners to expand the brand’s presence in the region.”
