TECHNOLOGY companies remain the most influential brands in the Kingdom, led by Google, Facebook and Line, for the second year, while 7-Eleven

The market research firm revealed yesterday that the other six on the list of the most influential brands in Thailand were Samsung, YouTube, Apple, Microsoft, AIS (Advanced Info Service) and True, in that order.

“The results are a spectacular confirmation of the growing role of digital and mobile [technology] in Thai people’s lives. Nine of the 10 most influent brands belong to this industry sector. The top leader is now Google, [which] has overtaken Facebook,” said Jerome Hervio, managing director of Ipsos in Thailand.

He said Line was making a strong entry as No 3, while the country’s leading convenience-store chain 7-Eleven was the only non-high-tech company in the top 10, and had managed its high ranking through a large presence.

The Ipsos survey employed online interviews with a nationwide sample of 1,000 respondents aged 18 to 55. Similar surveys were conducted in 20 other countries, yielding a combined sample of 36,600 respondents worldwide.

Each respondent was randomly allocated 10 brands from a list of 100 to evaluate on a number of key metrics and statements. Each country’s data were weighted back to census population.

The study was conducted last December. It measured the overall impact of brands based on five key factors – engagement, leading edge, presence (saliency), trustworthiness, and corporate citizenship or social responsibility – and varied from country to country.

With a strong presence in 87 countries, Ipsos currently employs more than 16,000 people and has the ability to conduct research programmes in more than 100 countries. Founded in France in 1975, Ipsos is controlled and managed by research professionals.

Generali to focus more on premium retail

http://www.nationmultimedia.com/business/Generali-to-focus-more-on-premium-retail-30293193.html

GENERALI Thailand will focus more on premium retail business as it wants to position itself the trusted insurer for this client sector.

In Thailand, the Italy-based firm operates both life and non-life insurance companies, the former under the name Generali Life Assurance (Thailand) and the latter under Generali Insurance Thailand.

Bundit Jiamanoonkoonkit, country manager of Generali Thailand and chief executive of Generali Life Assurance, said the retail insurance business would be the priority focus over the next three years but it would also maintain its strong business-to-business base.

The company this year has a new partner, Phatra Securities, to offer privilege insurance under the Chronos brand to cater to Phatra’s wealthy customers.

Generali aims for a 50:50 balance of retail and business customers to ensure risk diversification.

When the economy is volatile, retail customers will have a smaller impact on insurance firms than business clients, Bundit said.

Last year, Generali Thailand formed an exclusive partnership with Kiatnakin Bank to bring in more premium income from retail customers, as that bank is strong in auto loans and wealthy depositors.

To attract retail customers, the insurer has developed a mobile application called Generali365.

Generali Thailand in the first six months brought in total premium income of Bt3.015 billion, of which Bt2.677 billion was life-insurance premiums.

In the first half, gross income from life-insurance premiums expanded by 29 per cent, while first-year premiums were Bt671 million, up by 43 per cent year on year, significantly outperforming the overall life-insurance market, which dropped by 0.4 per cent.

Bancassurance contributed most premium income at Bt302 million, followed by group insurance and direct sales.

Meanwhile, non-life insurance earned premium income in the first six months of Bt338 million, growth of 29 per cent.

Bundit said the results in the first half showed that his company had further room to grow even though the economy is volatile. Healthy economic growth in the second quarter indicated that the second half would also be positive.

The bancassurance and agent channels both grew in the second half, and the company plans to launch new insurance plans to cater to retirees and white-collar workers who give importance to tax deductions in the fourth quarter.

Moreover, the company plans to develop a unit-linked insurance product to cater to wealthy customers.

Samsung targets premium segment with Note 7 launch

IT LOOKS like the mobile-phone market in Thailand this year will grow by less than 5 per cent, after the first half saw sales growth of around 1-3 per cent. But amid this apparent market saturation, Samsung has officially announced a new flagship model, Galaxy Note 7.

Wichai Pornpratang, the corporate vice president for IT and mobile communications at Thai Samsung Electronics, said the company believed the market in the second half would outperform the first half, growing by around 3-5 per cent.

The factors driving market growth would be the nationwide availability of fourth-generation service, lower prices of mobiles including smartphones, e-banking as well as online marketing, which will provide much more e-services.

And Samsung expects to outdo the growth of the total market, despite heavy competition. Wichai believes three major smartphone manufacturers will control 90 per cent of the market.

He said that to capture the premium market, Samsung had officially announced the Galaxy Note 7, which is equipped with outstanding water and dust resistance. The smartphone works with its signature S Pen designed to complement a large-screen experience even when its screen is wet.

The top smartphone model also boasts an iris scanner.

Samsung has prepared a big marketing campaign for its Galaxy Note 7, which is expected to boost sales in the latter half of 2016. It won overwhelming response during its pre-booking period, according to the company.

“We accepted pre-orders for black and gold Galaxy Note 7s from August 5-14 and customers can pick up the products from September 2-4. Pre-orders for Galaxy Note 7 were more than 30 per cent higher than for the Samsung S7 and S7 Edge at the same time.

“We will officially provide and deliver the new smartphone to the market on September 9 with a price of Bt28,900, expecting a lot of demand,” Wichai said.

He said that smartphone users in Thailand spent more than four hours each day on their devices on average. They use their smartphones not just for making or receiving calls, but also for interacting with friends on social media, browsing the Internet, and playing games.

Rising demand for

big-screen phones

Smartphone users turn to their devices for both work and entertainment. With such behaviour, small-screen smartphones may no longer live up to consumers’ expectations. The trend is reflected in the fact that big-screen smartphones have become the fastest-growing segment in terms of both sales revenue and the number of units sold.

Models with 5.5-inch screens and up account for 35 per cent of the premium smartphones sold and for half of sales revenue. Big-screen users also spend more time on their devices.

“Consumers today want not only a bigger screen but also a more versatile device,” Wichai said. “In response to their needs, Samsung has invented the S Pen to enable people to do what they have never been able to do with their cellphones before.

“Galaxy Note 7 exemplifies Samsung’s most advanced technology. Its S Pen can write even on a wet screen thanks to the highly efficient water and dust resistance.

“The authentication system also goes even more high-tech with an iris scanner. Galaxy Note 7 delivers HDR [high dynamic range] video streaming too so that its users get the fullest [benefit] from content creators. This is a truly interesting feature given that online video is now a growing trend.”

International Data Corporation, a global research company, reported that vendors shipped a total of 343.3 million smartphones worldwide in the second quarter of 2016. This was relatively flat, up 0.3 per cent from the same three months of 2015 when vendors shipped 342.4 million units.

The market did show greater sequential growth, as shipments were up 3.1 per cent from 333.1 million in the first quarter of 2016, IDC reported.

ADVERTISING EXPENDITURE

Under the new marketing campaign called

Under the new marketing campaign called “We Are Entertainer”, BBTV spent on advertising via out-of-home media such as billboards and BTS Skytrain wrap-ads in the Bangkok area.

ALTHOUGH some major advertisers are tightening their belts, Channel 7- the country’s largest broadcaster – was among the top advertising spender last month, according to the latest media research by Nielsen Thailand.

The media and market-research giant reported that Bangkok Broadcasting and Television (BBTV), the operator of Channel 7, had invested Bt88.98 million to promote its TV station in July, triple the Bt25.9 million spent on doing so in the same period last year.

The figure puts BBTV in the No 2 spot for ad spending during the month, after the Bt142.4 million spent on promoting Korea King cooking pans.

Other top-10 advertising spenders last month were Samsung, with Bt87.2 million for its mobile phones, Siam Commercial Bank with Bt4.55 million, Toyota with Bt82.2 million for its pickup range, Advanced Info Service with Bt77.1 million, Tesco Lotus supercentres with Bt68.9 million, the Tourism Authority of Thailand with Bt58.64 million, Krung Thai Bank with Bt54 million, and Sunsilk with Bt53 million for its hair conditioners.

In the case of BBTV, Nielsen explained that house ads such as TV programme promotions and announcements were not included in the Bt88.98-million expenditure figure.

Interestingly, not only did BBTV allocate its own advertising budget to the tune of Bt88.46 million to raise its new brand awareness under the “We Are Entertainer” campaign (here is the new TVC https://youtu.be/8pJLRLuctH8 ) via its own TV channel, but the market-leading TV broadcaster also spent via various other forms of communication.

These comprised Bt313,000-worth of advertising, brand placement and marketing activities through other TV channels, such as Channel 11 (NBT channel); Miracle, a satellite-based TV station, with Bt65,000; and Nation TV, digital-TV channel number 22, with Bt144,000.

Apart from these channels, BBTV also spent on advertising via out-of-home media such as billboards and BTS Skytrain wrap-ads in the Bangkok area, and publicising via top-rated newspapers.

Under its new marketing campaign, BBTV is encouraging its audience to stay tuned to Channel 7, which offers a wide range of TV programmes such as variety and game shows, top-ranked dramas, news and live sport games, covering viewers of all ages.

With the “We Are Entertainer” campaign and its quality programmes, and despite the fierce competition among digital-TV operators, Channel 7 was able to gain more market share with an increase of 4.3 per cent to 3.329 rating points in period from January to July 25, while its key rival Channel 3’s audience fell by 20 per cent, according to Nielsen.

PHYATHAI 2 International Hospital yesterday announced the launch of its Paediatric Care Centre to cater to the rising demand for child-care services in Thailand and elsewhere in Asean – and the markets of Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar and Vietnam (CLMV), in particular.

The centre will provide comprehensive care for children and services for their families, with the offering of medical specialists 24 hours a day and more examination rooms to support increased demand from Thai and foreign customers.

The new development will support the hospital’s expansion into the Asean Economic Community (AEC) market via a collaborative referral system with hospitals in nearby countries. Hospital executive director Dr Anantasak Apairatana said the outlook after the overall performance of Phyathai 2 International Hospital in the first half of the year was promising, with revenue having increased 9.6 per cent to Bt1.8 billion, against Bt1.63 billion posted for the same period last year.

“To support customers’ needs in the rapidly increasing healthcare market, the hospital has improved its medical services and standard to get ready for an expansion in the volume of patients. We have just launched the Phyathai 2 Paediatric Centre to provide service excellence, including better examination rooms, paediatricians and nurses,” he said.

Anantasak added that the overall number of outpatient and inpatient customers at Phyathai 2 in the first half of the year was 301,428 and 31,077, respectively. This equates to around 2,000 patients per day, of whom about 300 were seen by paediatric staff each day.

“The proportion of patients at our Paediatric Centre is 85 per cent Thais and 15 per cent foreigners, mostly from Asian countries and Oman. We target expanding the foreign-patient ratio to 50 per cent in the next five years,” the executive director said.

Newborn to 15-year-olds

Phyathai 2’s Paediatric Centre will focus on treating newborns through to 15-year-olds, from both Thailand and abroad.

The hospital also provides special medical treatment for children with critical injuries and in need of intensive care, via an advanced referral system covering the Kingdom.

“We will also support the transferred admission of international children who need constant intensive treatment through our 24-hour Paediatric Intensive Care Unit. The number of patients in this category is gradually increasing,” he said.

The key factors driving the formation of Phyathai 2’s Paediatric Care Centre are its prime location at the centre of Bangkok, highly experienced physicians and comprehensive advanced-technology equipment and facilities, plus the hospital’s certification, including the JCI (Joint Connection International) standard, he explained.

“Demand keeps growing, and we have in fact already accessed the AEC market. I believe foreign customers trust and have confidence in our physicians to provide them with effective treatment for complicated diseases. “For example, we are famous among Cambodian patients for heart operations, and among Middle Eastern patients for genetics and bone-marrow transplants,” Anantasak said.

Phyathai 2 Paediatric Centre offers a highly experienced medical team of physicians and nurses who are specially trained to care for children via a one-stop service, with the care including treatment for newborns, cardiology, bone-marrow transplantation, child development, child and adolescent mental health, allergies and respiratory ailments, he said.

The centre is equipped with advanced equipment and facilities, such as clean room, separate well-baby zone from the disease-examination zone, breastfeeding room and children’s playground to ensure the highest standard of service, the easing of concern and tension among parents, and increased customer satisfaction, he added.
