Q2 RESULT

ASIA AVIATION yesterday reported that its majority-owned low-cost carrier Thai AirAsia earned net profit of Bt422.5 million on a 13-per-cent rise in second-quarter revenue to Bt7.75 billion.

TAA’s load factor increased 3 percentage points to 83 per cent from the second quarter of last year, while the number of passengers increased 18 per cent 4.17 million.

Tassapon Bijleveld, chief executive of AAV and TAA, said the performance was a satisfactory continuation from the first quarter.

It was the result of the general robustness of the tourism industry, proactive work of the government and the Tourism Authority of Thailand, and the launch of seven routes during the period, he said.

The new routes are Chiang Mai-Changsha (in Hunan province, China), Chiang Mai-Khon Kaen, Khon Kaen-Hat Yai, Hat Yai-Chiang Rai, Hat Yai-Johor Bahru (in Malaysia), Bangkok-Kochi (in Kerala state, India) and Bangkok-Shantou (in Guangdong, China).

Frequency on the Hat Yai-Chiang Mai route was also upped to two flights daily in response to the growing popularity of the airline’s Hat Yai hub.

Two Airbus A320 jets were received in the period, bringing its fleet to 49 aircraft.

For the first half, TAA netted Bt2.59 billion on revenue of Bt16.7 billion, improved its average load factor by 4 percentage points to 85 per cent, and served 8.53 million passengers.

During the period, TAA launched 10 routes, allowing it to make the most of the advent of the AseanEconomic Community, strengthen its network of destinations and provide more opportunities for travel, it said.

In the second half, TAA is targeting more destinations in China, India and the CLMV (Cambodia, Laos, Malaysia and Vietnam) subregion, all of which have shown continued growth potential.

It will continue to take delivery of Airbus A320 planes to grow its fleet to 51 aircraft. This is the first time it has acquired the Airbus A320neo, a new environmentally friendly model using 15 per cent less fuel.

Whole-year targets are 17 million people served and an average load factor of 83 per cent.

Index Creative Village bucks the trend, eyes 6-7% growth this year

OUTLOOK

ALTHOUGH THE event business looks like suffering a revenue decline of at least 10 per cent this year as companies have cut their marketing budgets, Index Creative Village says it will meet its revenue target of Bt1.7 billion, mainly thanks to a rise in Asean business.

Co-chief executive officer Kriangkrai Kanjanapokin said yesterday that by the end of this year, his event-management empire could post a revenue increase of 6-7 per cent, outpacing an industry that has been hit hard by the economic slowdown.

“In this tough situation, a number of companies have decided to cut their marketing and advertising budgets to secure their bottom lines,” he explained.

The company’s core business of creative solutions remains the biggest revenue contributor at 51 per cent, followed by 34 per cent from marketing consultancy, 8 per cent from the lifestyle-experience business unit, and the remaining 7 per cent from other business in Asean countries Myanmar, Vietnam and Cambodia.

Kriangkrai said Asean business was becoming an increasingly key player for his company while domestic activities appeared to going downwards.

To deal with this challenge, his company has teamed up with Kamron “Air” Pramoj Na Ayutthaya, former editor-in-chief of Image magazine, and Whuthipan “Todd” Dantaweesilp, a music and entertainment expert, to develop electronic dance music (EDM) festivals for Thailand and neighbouring countries.

Whuthipan, who is also the adviser for music industry projects to the Thailand Convention and Exhibition Bureau and managing director of First One Organize, said there was room to grow for EDM-related business in Thailand and elsewhere in Asean.

According to last year’s “International Music Summit Business Report” for the Asia-Pacific region, the EDM industry saw a 50-per-cent expansion in the previous four years, while total marketing value was estimated at US$7.1 billion (Bt245 billion). Meanwhile, the Asian EDM industry was valued at around $1 billion, accounting for 15 per cent of the global EBM market. The top three EDM markets were India, Singapore and South Korea.

Index Creative Village plans at least four EDM festivals a year in Thailand, Vietnam and Myanmar. But before rolling out this kind of event in other countries, the first edition of its own “Another World” festival is scheduled for November 5, expected to welcome more than 10,000 attendees and to generate Bt25 million.

FINANCIAL RESULT

TAOKAENOI FOOD & Marketing saw second-quarter sales of its seaweed snacks soar 37.5 per cent to Bt1.12 billion.

“Our growth has been driven by the growing domestic market, especially from Chinese tourists who buy the products as souvenirs to take back home,” chief executive officer Itthipat Peeradechapan said yesterday.

The company’s profit leapt by 146.4 per cent to Bt185 million from the second quarter of last year.

In the first six months of this year, its sales climbed 41.5 per cent to Bt2.13 billion, while profit spurted 173.5 per cent to Bt345 million.

“The company has built brand recognition, together with regular marketing activities and the expansion of distribution channels. These resulted in the company’s sweep of 66 per cent of the market in the first half of this year, up from 62 per cent in the same period of last year,” he said.

The seaweed-snack market was worth Bt2.54 billion last year and continued growth is expected for this year.

The company is launching a Bt30-million sports marketing campaign to support the national soccer team when it competes in the 12-team final qualifying round for Asia’s representative to the World Cup.

The competition begins next month.

The company will encourage Thais to exercise more with “seaweed” steps and eat healthily.

The campaign is responding to the trend towards a healthy lifestyle where people choose healthy food for themselves.

Sports marketing will be the company’s priority strategy, along with entertainment marketing.

Taokaenoi has recently launched products such as “Big C Top” baked seaweed a la Taokaenoi, which offers a snack with low calories – perfect for those who are health-conscious and wish to look after their figure.

Seagle, a fried seaweed snack, has been well received by customers, the company says.

Belt-tightening continues among advertisers

MEDIA RESULT

THE BUSINESS performance of the media sector in the second quarter suggests that advertisers were still tightening their belts in the period, particularly in regard to spending via traditional media outlets, while new top-rated digital-TV channels and out-of-home media operators were able to maintain positive growth.

According to the latest data reported by media companies listed on the Stock Exchange of Thailand, the financial results of print-based companies fell in line with the industry trend, particularly among newspaper and magazine publishers.

Though leading print-based media groups had diversified into broadcasting business with the aim of offsetting declining advertising revenue from their core business, their performance was still to show the full benefits of such a move, despite some degree of year-on-year improvement.

After being more aggressive in producing and supplying news programmes and documentary shows to the Voice TV and Channel 7 digital-TV channels, as well as to online platforms, Matichon Group said its financial loss in the quarter had improved from the same period last year.

However, the group reported that its revenue in the first half still suffered a year-on-year decline of 16.41 per cent to Bt545.27 million.

Nation Multimedia Group reported that its revenue from sales and services in the first half had decreased by 21 per cent compared to the same period last year, which it attributed to the domestic economic slowdown affecting its advertising revenue.

Meanwhile, Amarin Printing and Publishing’s revenue in the second quarter saw a 11.54-per-cent drop to Bt391.3 million, while net profit fell 53.71 per cent to Bt171 million.

Post Publishing’s revenue in the same period registered a decline of 15.3 per cent from Bt544.2 million in the second quarter last year, to Bt461 million.

For broadcasting business in the second quarter, some major digital-TV channels revealed that their financial results were better when compared to both the previous three months and the same period last year.

Workpoint Entertainment – the operator of Workpoint TV – posted impressive financial results.

The company reported an 18-per-cent increase in second-quarter revenue to Bt801.7 million, from Bt678.92 million in the same period last year, mainly driven by ad revenue from its digital-TV business.

The leading production house also posted a 31.71-per-cent surge in net profit to Bt133.89 million for the quarter.

The second-quarter performance of Mono Technology – the parent company of Mono 29 digital-TV channel – was also impressive, with year-on year income rising 25.18 per cent to Bt594.23 million.

BEC World – the parent of Channel 3, 3S and 3 Family digital-TV stations – said its advertising revenue from April to June was Bt3.32 billion, 7.4 per cent higher than in the previous quarter as the company had benefited from the high-season for the advertising industry, along with good momentum from its live coverage of the Uefa Euro 2016 football tournament.

Meanwhile, after its Channel 8 had fallen to sixth spot in the digital-TV rankings, RS’s revenue for the second quarter came in at Bt747.5 million, 10.3 per cent lower than in the same period last year, mainly due to a fall in revenue from satellite-TV business, music distribution and show business.

Though its digital-TV business and show-biz operations improved in the first half, GMM Grammy’s second-quarter revenue was still in negative territory, with a year-on-year drop of 18.4 per cent to Bt1.84 billion.

Turning to out-of-home media companies, VGI Global Media posted a 10-per-cent quarter-on-quarter increase in revenue in its first financial quarter from April to June, to Bt551 million – one month after its acquisition of a further stake in Master Ad.

Chief executive officer Surachet Bamrungsuk said the company had also enjoyed a 49-per-cent rise in net profit to Bt313 million compared to the January-March period.

VGI’s growth in the quarter was achieved following an expansion of the firm’s outdoor advertising coverage through an increase in its stake in Master Ad to 37.42 per cent, as well as an increase in the number of office towers covered to 142 from 103 in the previous year, he said.

The number of towers will rise further to 160 by the end of this year.

VGI’s rival, Plan B Media, posted a revenue increase of 8.4 per cent for the second quarter to Bt613.2 million, but there was a different story when it came to the business’s net profit, which fell 15.6 per cent to Bt110.6 million due to a fall in advertising utilisation rates amid higher operating costs.

TrueMove H aims to launch Thai version of Pokemon Go soon

http://www.nationmultimedia.com/business/TrueMove-H-aims-to-launch-Thai-version-of-Pokemon–30293027.html

TRUEMOVE H expects to launch a localised version of the Pokemon Go mobile game in Thailand by next quarter, said True Corp chief executive officer Suphachai Chearavanont.

Kittinut Tikawan, True Corp’s chief commercial officer, said the localised version would serve True Move H users only.

The Pokemon Go launched in Thailand on August 6 is the international version, which can be downloaded by all mobile-phone users regardless of which company they subscribe to.

True is in talks with Niantic Inc and the Pokemon Company on the details of the localised licence, and the negotiations are expected to be finalised next month, Kittinut said.

The launch will include a mobile data package for Pokemon players.

Currently True holds licences for merchandised Pokemon characters and sponsorship rights.

He said True was in the process of awarding sponsorship deals, selecting only one company from each business sector.

Key drivers of revenue growth

Kittinut said Pokemon Go would be one of two key drivers of revenue growth for TrueMove H, which is targeting growth of more than 20 per cent this year.

The other key revenue source will be the right to broadcast the English Premier League on pay-TV and online, he said.

True expects to see continued growth of mobile data usage on its network. It expects 10 million subscribers to its fourth-generation service by the end of this year, double the current number.

In a separate matter, True yesterday introduced TrueMove H Deaf SIM cards for people with hearing disabilities.

The SIM cards offer free unlimited mobile data usage for messaging applications, video apps, and captioned phone apps of the Thai Telecommunication Relay Service centre.

Vizrt sees rise in supply to TV industry both at home and CLMV

Michael Namatinia:

Michael Namatinia: “Over the next three years, local broadcasters would invest about US$20 million (Bt690 million) to $25 million on facilities and technology related to media asset management on top of regular expenditures on other advanced broadcasting

VIZRT Thailand targets at least 15-per-cent growth in revenue this year from supplying studio automation software, broadcasting equipment and media asset management technology to local TV stations amid rising demand to distribute their contents across multiple platforms.

“TV broadcasters are requiring not only more capacity to store their growing content library but also various ways to distribute those contents via multi-platforms.

“To deal with this challenge, it is very important to have high performance and cost-effective media asset management,” Michael Namatinia, president for the Asia-Pacific market at Vizrt Thailand, said yesterday.

Over the next three years, local broadcasters would invest about US$20 million (Bt690 million) to $25 million on facilities and technology related to media asset management on top of regular expenditures on other advanced broadcasting systems and studio automation, he said.

Vizrt Thailand has enlisted Hitachi Data Systems, a leading data management and technology company, to increase their capacity in managing media assets and supporting workflow from content acquisition to broadcasting and online distribution.

“Due to the change in new media, particularly online video consumption, the demand from local broadcasters in terms of content distribution across multi-platforms has shifted to exponential growth after experiencing linear growth during the past three years,” said Marrut Manistitya, managing director for Thailand and Myanmar at Hitachi Data Systems.

After striking this deal, Vizrt aims to see a 25-30-per-cent expansion in its media asset management service this year.

Namatinia acknowledged that the investment on this segment in Thailand was still low, while at the global level, only 7 per cent of investment on broadcasting systems was budgeted for this purpose.

The good news is that the PPTV digital TV channel in Thailand already has this technology along with other cutting-edge broadcasting systems from Vizrt and Hitachi.

“Despite facing an economy slowing down this year, Thailand is still a healthy and advanced market for the company in the Southeast Asian countries,” he said.

So more clients are expected to be welcomed this year on top of existing ones such as Channel 3 and its network, Channel 7, Channel 5, Modernine TV, Thai PBS, Thairath TV, New TV, Voice TV, Now26, PPTV, True4U, Matichon TV and Media Studios.

Vizrt is also continuing to expand its client base in neighbouring countries such as Myanmar, Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam, where terrestrial TV broadcasting is in a digital transition.

Early this year, the company established a sales and marketing representative in Yangon, the commercial city of Myanmar, and welcomed MRTV as its first client.

Did you know?

Vizrt’s Asia Pacific Head Quarter is based in Bangkok. Why?

  1. Human resource in Thailand, which has a professional capable of research and development
  2. Strategic location, at the centre of Asia Pacific with a very good infrastructure ie. Internet and telecom and broadcasting service
  3. A good client base, which is considerably a perfect ground to test and develop new solutions and services

Top airlines post net loss in 2nd quarter

ศาสตร์เกษตรดินปุ๋ย : ขอบคุณแหล่งข้อมูล : หนังสือพิมพ์ The Nation

http://www.nationmultimedia.com/business/Top-airlines-post-net-loss-in-2nd-quarter-30293010.html

MAJOR AIRLINES posted a net overall loss in the second quarter of this year because of the low season, but results for the first half continued to be positive.

Although the Civil Aviation Authority of Thailand reported that passengers in the second quarter were on a rising trend with 12.0-per-cent growth from same quarter last year, Thai Airways International, Nok Air and Bangkok Airways experienced net losses due to multiple factors.

The serial bombings last week are expected to bring turbulence to the airline and tourism industries this quarter.

THAI president Charamporn Jotikasthira said yesterday that the group suffered a quarterly operating loss of Bt1.78 billion, which was a 62.2-per-cent improvement from the same time last year.

Adding an impairment loss of assets and aircraft under the airline’s transformation plan of Bt2.30 billion and a gain on foreign exchange of Bt595 million brought the loss to a net Bt2.92 billion.

The national airline, however, showed positive performance for the first half year with a Bt5.39-billion profit compared with a loss of Bt297 million in the same half last year. The airline said the multiple factors of high competition, low-season traffic, terrorism in Europe and the emergence of low-cost airlines caused a 0.6-per-cent decrease in passengers while its cabin factor was 69 per cent, a slight drop from the same time last year.

The blasts last week at major tourist destinations did not ruffle its reservations much, but if there are more incidents, the airline may suffer a lot of cancellations.

The Tourism Authority of Thailand said 100,000-200,000 tourists had cancelled trips to Thailand after the attacks, wiping out Bt5 billion to Bt10 billion in revenue.

However, bookings for September 15 to December 31 were running 2 per cent ahead of the same period last year.

Nuanwan Bhuprasert, chief financial officer of Nok Airlines, the operator of low-cost carrier Nok Air, said the group lost Bt864.38 million in the second quarter, worse than the Bt458.00 million lost in the same quarter last year.

In the second quarter, Nok Air and its subsidiaries generated revenue of Bt3.91 billion.

The decline in revenue came mainly from the reduction of domestic flights to fit pilot capacity and a drop of 3.1 per cent in passengers.

Passenger yield declined 8.9 per cent, while the available seat kilometre (ASK) rate edged up by 1.0 per cent from the same quarter last year, as the company launched international routes and increased flight frequencies.

Puttipong Prasarttong-Osoth, president of Bangkok Airways, said last week that in the second quarter, revenue rose 8.8 per cent year on year to Bt6.05 billion by carrying more passengers.

Profit before tax was Bt491.7 million, but additional taxes of Bt447 million filed because of the change in the calculation for tax privileges granted by the Board of Investment caused the company to realise a net loss of Bt111.9 million.

The change in rules was announced by the Finance Ministry on June 16.

For the first half, revenue climbed by 12.5 per cent to Bt13.83 billion and net profit by 23 per cent to Bt1.46 billion.

Charamporn said THAI began using a new reservation system and network-management system this month.

It expects to see a difference in three months.

It also plans to increase revenue from its alliances with other airlines from 5 per cent currently to 20 per cent by next year.

EPG net profit grows by 32% in its Q1

EPG has announced that net profit in the first quarter of its current fiscal year (ended June 16) jumped by 32 per cent year on year to Bt381.1 million.

Sales revenue in the quarter reached Bt2.3586 billion, up 13.7 per cent, it reported.

The company said innovation was the key factor increasing its global market share. In addition, signs of recovery in the Thai automotive sector are expected to benefit EPG. Its revenue target for this year is between Bt10 billion and Bt11 billion.

Associate Professor Chalieo Vitoorapakorn, deputy chief executive officer of Eastern Polymer Group, a manufacturer of polymers and plastic products, said two segments of its business contributed to the solid quarterly performance.

These were its Aeroflex thermal-insulation business and its automotive parts and accessories business under the Aeroklas and TJM brands — the latter for four-wheel-drive vehicles.

Meanwhile, its EPP plastic and packaging business suffered a slight decline due to slower domestic consumption. The automotive business under Aeroklas and TJM posted quarterly revenue of Bt1.0267 billion, up by 30.9 per cent year on year thanks to international demand.

In addition, Aeroklas continued to develop new products such as pickup bed liners, canopies, side steps and other products such as geomembrane |multipurpose plastic sheets for agricultural applications.

Aeroflex benefited from domestic and international demand for thermal insulation, especially premium-grade products used in buildings and many important landmarks in the United States and Japan. Aeroflex sales revenue totalled Bt678 million, an increase of 7.4 per cent year on year.

For the plastic and packaging business, sales revenue was Bt645 million, slightly softening by 0.8 per cent year on year or Bt5 million.

With the current economic situation where domestic growth in gross domestic product is forecast at 3.2 per cent and the slight slowdown in the global economy, EPG expects to continue operating according to its yearly plan.

Thai Airways International reported the operating loss of Bt1.78 billion in the second quarter, a decrease by Bt2.93 billion from the same period last year, thanks to continued corporate restructuring measures and lower jet fuel expenses.

Fuel expenses in the quarter dropped by Bt3.18 billion or 21.3 per cent on year, as prices in the quarter declined by 27.9 per cent. Non-fuel expenses decreased by Bt184 million or 0.6 per cent on year.

The airlines reported the net loss of Bt2.9 billion in the quarter. This showed an improvement compared to the net loss of over Bt11 billion in the same quarter last year. Attributable to the net loss was the Bt427 million expense for a lay-off scheme as well as the Bt1.87 billion impairment losses.

In June, THAI decommissioned 1 operating lease aircraft (Boeing B777-200), leaving it with 94 active aircraft.

The quarterly passenger traffic (Revenue Passenger-Kilometres – RPK) decreased by 0.6 per cent due to lower demand within Asia. However, traffic of Thai Smile’s domestic operations and international routes, especially Europe and Australia, increased. The quarterly cabin factor stayed at 69 per cent, compared to 69.2 per cent in the same period last year.

PTT today signed a memorandum of understanding with six automakers, showing its commitment to open charging stations for electric cars.

The signatories are BMW (Thailand), Mercedes-Benz (Thailand), Mitsubishi Motors (Thailand), Nissan Motor (Thailand), Porsche (Thailand) and Volvo Car (Thailand).

Eenrgy Minister Gen Anantaporn Kanjanarat, who presided over the signing ceremony, said that the MoU was line with Thailand’s plan to increase the number of electric vehicles to 1.2 million within 2036, to reduce energy consumption by 30 per cent compared to the 2010 level. The Thai government earlier unveiled tax incentives for electric car manufacturing and imports.

PTT President Tevin Vongvanich said the company kicked off research and development on electric cars in 2012 and has so far opened four standard EV stations. Two more will be opened within this year and the total number will be raised to 20 within 2017.

Under this MoU, the parties agree to test the services at PTT EV stations.
