SCG Cement-Building Materials, a unit of Siam Cement Group, has revamped its key online and offline customers touch points as part of its bid to reinforce its customer-centricity vision.

The three key platforms that underwent the revamp were the SCG Building Materials website, the SCG Contact Centre, and the SCG Experience Store, its flagship store in Bangkok.

The website, http://www.scgbuildingmaterials.com, consolidates all the information that was previously assigned to some 50 product websites of the group.

Launched two years ago, the newly improved SCG Contact Centre now centralises all communication channels – telephone, e-mail, text messaging, and live chat – and now can also provide customers with information on product availability and take their orders.

About 200-300 stock-keeping units – from faucets to concrete blocks and other building materials – are being offered on the website and the contact centre.

Nonetheless, Nithi Pattarachoke, vice president for the domestic market of SCG Cement-Building Materials, said the e-commerce capability was just a trial. Building materials are bulky, and even in foreign markets, sales of such products through e-commerce channels are still low.

“The main purpose is to enhance convenience for our customers, rather than for sales,” he said.

The company has spent more than Bt20 million on a major renovation of the 6,200-square-metre SCG Experience Store, which now includes a new “SCG Village” that presents four showcases of popular housing trends: Inspiration House, Comfort House, Acoustic House, and Elderly House.

Visitors can seek free advice from some 20 architects SCG has deployed to the store, as well as via the website.

Bottom line

“Customer-centricity is our bottom line. For us, customers come before sales and profit, since we believe that if customers are satisfied, sales and profit will follow,” he said.

Previously, SCG only manufactured and sold its products to its customers, but in recent years it has started to pay attention to the whole customer journey, from the pre-purchase stage to the post-purchase experience, Nithi said.

Chatchawan Sethaputra, managing director of SCG Experience, said that although customers still prefer to see and touch the real products before buying, the company had no plan to expand its flagship store to other locations. “The main channel will actually be online. Our perspective is to stay closest to the customers,” for which a physical presence is unnecessary, he said.

Alternatively, customers upcountry can visit SCG Home Solutions, which are dealer-owned, company-operated stores. The company currently has 40 SCG Home Solutions stores in many provinces.

Traffic to http://www.scgbuildingmaterials.com has doubled to about 200,000-250,000 visitors per month since it was upgraded in January. The SCG Brand Facebook fanpage currently has nearly 1.5 million “likes”, while the SCG experience fanpage has about 500,000 “likes.”

Nithi said SCG would use the feedback it gathers from these customer touch points to develop and improve its products and service.

“Our commitment to innovation means that we relentlessly develop products, services and solutions in response to people’s lifestyles and constantly introduce them to the market to offer convenience and quality to the customers, along with a superior customer experience,” he said.

The major target of this revamp are customers who plan to build their own homes, which is in line with the company’s customer profile that business-to-business project sales contribute less than half of its total revenue.

Group announces strategy to back tech start-ups

THE THAILAND Tech Startup Association yesterday announced a two-year strategy called “Start-up Thailand 4.0” that aims to make tech start-ups part of the country’s economic engine.

Established in May 2014, the association yesterday also announced that Vachara Aemavat, the chief executive officer and founder of Computerlogy, would be its second president. The first president of the Thailand Tech Startup Association was Patai Padungtin, founder of Builk Asia.

Vachara said that during his 2016-17 term, the association’s “unite, accelerate, and drive” mission would continue. From now on, the association will concentrate more on communication and collaboration among all stakeholders in the start-up ecosystem including start-up themselves, venture-capital providers and government.

“Tech start-ups are expected to be a part of the growth engine driving the country’s economy,” he said. “Start-up businesses can help support the country’s economy through the funding from venture investors around the world into Thai tech start-ups. Tech start-ups themselves can support the country’s economy through their business growth as well.”

The association yesterday also signed a memorandum of understanding with the Thai Venture Capital Association. Thanapong Na Ranong, president of the Thai Venture Capital Association, said the two organisations would collaborate to strengthen the start-up ecosystem in Thailand.

“This MoU is for tangible collaboration between the two associations to bring start-ups and venture-capital [providers] closer. They will match funds, contribute knowledge about start-ups and venture capital as well as investment, and provide information or reports on the current landscape of the start-up ecosystem in Thailand,” Thanapong said.

He said his association this year would have a greater presence in every region of Thailand as well as collaborate more with the private sector.

Yod Chinsupakul, vice president of the Thailand Tech Startup Association, said start-ups also helped the country by providing employment. Wongnai, his own start-up, has already employed more 90 people.

“Start-ups can help people find a job without coming to Bangkok. They can work and earn while living in their home town. This is the beauty of start-ups’ contribution to society,” Yod said.

TV broadcasters warned to stick to ad time limit

WHILE product placements during TV shows are not subject to control by the authorities, broadcasters must strictly comply with current regulations by advertising within the limits of the law, the National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC) warned yesterday.

Meanwhile, the limit on advertising time slots appears to have become another matter of debate between the broadcasting regulator and Channel 3 TV station, with the two parties having divergent opinions over the calculation method.

The issue was raised at a workshop held yesterday by the NBTC, at which all free-to-air digital-TV broadcasters were invited to brainstorm ideas about the permitted advertising time slots.

Under current broadcasting rules, free-to-air TV operators in both the analogue and digital terrestrial TV systems are allowed to sell no more than 12 minutes per hour of advertising time, while pay-TV channels are allowed to sell only six minutes per hour.

To ensure a level playing field in the industry, Supinya Klangnarong, a member of the NBTC’s broadcasting committee, said the permitted time slots must be calculated on a regular hourly basis, not on a specific programme basis.

However, a legal representative from Bangkok Entertainment Company – the operator of Channel 3 – disagreed with the NBTC’s calculation method. The country’s second-largest TV network said it supported the idea of counting TV commercials during specific programmes.

Based on the NBTC’s method and its monitoring on May 14, Supinya said her panel found that during Channel 3’s prime-time TV drama that day, the station had aired commercials for 13 minutes per hour, which was more than the limit in the broadcasting regulations.

The monitoring team also found that the operator of Mono 29 channel had recently aired about 18 minutes of advertising per hour, she said.

ENTERTAINMENT

BECI CORPORATION, a subsidiary of BEC World, is overhauling its digital-media platforms to help the Channel 3 network deliver its champion content to new-generation audiences.

BECi Corp is planning to introduce a new mobile application providing video-on-demand (VOD) service, and another app to support marketing activities and audience relationship management.

Managing director Savisith Phuawong said yesterday that the change was aimed at responding to an assignment from Channel 3 and its digital-TV networks to expand the audience base via digital media, in order to cash in on the emergence of online content consumption, mainly driven by the advance of wireless broadband Internet.

“We want to create the best mobile applications to offer the best viewing experience to all Channel 3 fans,” he said. Currently, BECi Corp manages three main mobile applications and websites: ThaiTV3, to provide information about its flagship TV station Channel 3; KrobKruaKhao, to provide news programming; and 3LIVE, for live streaming of Channel 3 and its two other digital-TV stations, 3SD and 3Family. Savisith added that the company wanted to see more growth in terms of active users of these mobile applications, its target being to have 3.8 million overall users by end of the year, against around 2.9 million now.

Apart from managing content via these online platforms, BECi Corp is also providing Channel 3’s top-rated dramas to online viewers through YouTube.

“The policy on offering content via YouTube will be changed after the company’s VOD service is introduced within this year. Having said that, audiences who miss prime-time dramas will be able to catch missed programmes on the new VOD service one hour after a programme ends, instead of browsing YouTube,” he explained.

After the launch of VOD service, Channel 3’s prime-time TV dramas are expected to be available via its official YouTube account two days to one week after their first run.

DTAC CEO Lars Norling, third left, and chief marketing officer Sitthichoke Nopchinabutr, fourth left, launch ‘DTAC Super 4G’, a new SIM card to tap the digital generation.

TOTAL Access Communication has introduced the “DTAC Super 4G” prepaid SIM card package, targeting the growing base of prepaid heavy data users.

According to DTAC chief executive officer Lars Norling, the company found that 68 per cent of its prepaid customers were now using smartphones and their daily data usage had grown by 46 per cent compared with last year. About 94 per cent access YouTube on their phones.

He said these figures showed that most DTAC prepaid users are the “digital generation”, who spend a lot of time online, which prompted the company to launch the new prepaid SIM package to serve them specifically.

DTAC has targeted a million new prepaid subscribers this year through the new package.

Chief marketing officer Sitthichoke Nopchinabutr said the DTAC Super 4G SIM package enabled users to enjoy entertainment content without any limit, and they can view YouTube for free from midnight to 8am.

They can also access music streaming free of charge 24 hours a day through DTAC’s Music Infinite hub of music-streaming applications, and have up to 12 gigabyte of high-speed Internet.

Currently DTAC has more than 25.5 million subscribers, of whom around 20 million are prepaid.

SMARTPHONE

HUAWEI PLANS to expand its smartphone sales through modern trade and camera shops in the third quarter and expects to distribute around 10 million of its new P9 and P9 Plus models globally this year.

Tossaporn Nisthanon, deputy country director of Huawei Consumer Business Group, said the Chinese company had officially announced two new flagship smartphones, the Huawei P9 and P9 Plus, for the Thai market, priced at Bt16,990 and Bt21,990 respectively. The company will spend around Bt150 million for marketing to promote the new products.

The Huawei P9 features a dual-lens camera, while the P9 Plus boasts an immaculate 5.5-inch display within a metal uni-body. The two models were launched for the global market in London in April.

The company has also introduced the “Diamond” service for the two phones. Should a phone require repair work taking longer than 60 minutes, Huawei will provide a new device to customers.

There are now five service centres in Thailand providing Diamond service: the Synnex head office in Lat Phrao, SVOA head office in Rat Burana, CSC head office in Lumpini, and the Huawei Service Centres in Nakhon Si Thammarat and Chiang Mai.

Tossaporn said Huawei was negotiating with modern-trade outlets and camera shops to retail its phones. It expects to get its products into such outlets by next quarter.

Thomas Liu, president for Southeast Asia of Huawei Consumer Business Group, said the company now had online marketing channels in Europe, Russia and China. It expects to have online channels in Thailand in the next step.

SALARY

PROPERTY and real estate is the best-paying occupational field with salaries starting at Bt87,500 a month, according to JobsDB (Thailand).

It is followed by sciences, laboratory work, and research and development, with salaries starting at Bt83,276, and transport and logistics with salaries starting at Bt80,738.

Based on information from more than 40,000 companies, of which 80 per cent were in Bangkok, the recruitment agency suggested working people should develop their skills to help them climb the career ladder efficiently and become specialists in their fields to get higher pay.

“We want to help working people recognise opportunities in their career field and prepare themselves well, through skill development and efficiency enhancement, for next-generation industries.

“Our salary survey covers all career levels to provide a remuneration guideline,” Noppawan Chulakanista, managing director of jobsDB (Thailand), said yesterday.

The company said the findings reflected the real situation in the market, where the real-estate business continued to grow, mainly driven by local demand in line with the expansion of infrastructure such as the mass-transit system in Greater Bangkok and main cities.

Among managerial levels, property came up with the highest monthly salaries, starting from Bt87,500, followed by the occupational fields of sciences, laboratory work and R&D, with salaries starting from Bt83,276, and transport and logistics, with salaries starting from Bt80,738.

For the supervisory level, professional services with salaries starting at Bt51,208 was ranked as the highest paid job category, followed by insurance at Bt50,855 and accounting at Bt49,664.

The intermediate and entry levels were almost the same in terms of occupational fields, Noppawan said.

For example, at the intermediate level, telecommunications was in top position with salaries starting at Bt38,125, while banking and finance start at Bt37,667 and professional services at Bt36,133.

At the entry level, telecoms was also ranked the highest-paid job category at Bt28,467, followed by professional services at Bt22,731 and information technology at Bt21,854.

The top jobs in demand this year – from junior to manager levels – were related to sales, customer service and business development.

DESPITE the economic uncertainty driven by the slowdown of the world economy, Saha Group, a diversified consumer-products company, plans to plough ahead with major investments in several joint-venture projects this year to pursue the new business opportunities presented by the liberalisation of Asean.

They include Arusu Myanmar, a joint venture formed by its subsidiary Thai Arusu and MK Group, which will expand the company’s interior-design services for retail and office buildings in Myanmar.

“Myanmar is similar to Thailand about 30 years ago. The opening of Myanmar will lure many new business opportunities, including the inflow of foreign investors into the country.

“The move leads to the boom of office buildings and retail outlets as well as interior design in the country,” chairman Boonsithi Chokwatana said yesterday.

Separately, a JV will be formed by Saha Patthana Inter-Holding, its investment arm, and MayFlower of Malaysia to offer diverse and comprehensive tour services for tourists to Thailand.

“Thailand’s tourism is also another growing industry, especially for the in-bound travelling segment.

“The joint venture with our Malaysian partner MayFlower will cash in on the new business opportunity for bringing their foreign tourists coming to Thailand and Malaysia as two connected destinations,” he said.

Another JV will be formed by President Foods and Japanese Ramen to operate a ramen restaurant chain in Thailand.

Boonsithi urged the government to lead the private sector in injecting money into the economic system by speeding up the execution of its infrastructure and transportation projects, such as the high-speed railroads.

“The government is now on the right track in granting policies and measures to stimulate and grow the Kingdom’s economy.

“We believe that in the second half of this year, the purchasing power of individual consumers will gradually improve,” he said.

The country’s food industry would be the first to rebound and would be followed by other daily necessities, including fast-moving consumer goods.

Saha Group expects its revenue to rise 5-6 per cent this year, faster than the growth in gross domestic product of 3 per cent anticipated by the government.

Saha’s investment policy will also focus on food and textile products, especially on its textile facilities in Tak’s Mae Sot district, to leverage the government’s stimulus policy to promote private investment in border provinces under the special-economic-zone project.

“We will focus on increasing investment into the expansion of our textile facilities in Mae Sot, not only to benefit from the government’s stimulus package, but also to cash in on cheap labour in the form of migrant workers from Myanmar,” Boonsithi said.

SAHA GROUP is making use of digital technology to reinvent commerce in the annual “Saha Group Fair”.

For the first time in Thailand, shoppers at the fair will be able to browse for items through a virtual store QR (quick response) code, a three-dimensional virtual store and a virtual fitting room, and make their purchases quickly and easily via ethailandbest.com.

This year, Saha Group fair will be held from June 30 to July 3 at Queen Sirikit National Convention Centre in Bangkok.

Boonkiet Chokwatana, chairman of the board and executive chairman of ICC International and head of Saha Group Fair organising committee, said the group had placed a great deal of emphasis on e-commerce and had adopted digital technology to make it possible for this year’s fair to offer a fast and convenient shopping experience.

Shoppers can use their smartphones to scan the QR code that directs them to ethailandbest.com, where they can place an order and check out their items through an e-payment system.

The fair will also offer a 3D virtual-augmented-reality store, in which there are a department store and a convenience store with animated staffers.

Customers entering the store will feel as if they are at a real department store with sales representatives to offer help.

They will be able to select the product they would like to buy, then place the order on their smartphone by scanning the QR code that redirects them to ethailandbest.com, where they check out their order through an e-payment system.

Speedy delivery, free of charge, will also be available.

Moreover, the fair will offer a virtual fitting room, in which customers can browse for clothing items and try them on easily.

Communications agency sees big potential in CLMV countries

ศาสตร์เกษตรดินปุ๋ย : ขอบคุณแหล่งข้อมูล : หนังสือพิมพ์ The Nation

http://www.nationmultimedia.com/business/Communications-agency-sees-big-potential-in-CLMV-c-30287529.html

INTERVIEW

Havas Riverorchid’s founding partner and chief executive officer, Santiphong Pimolsaengsuriya, reveals his communications agency’s latest developments and the promising CLMV markets (Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar and Vietnam). Here are some excerpts of that interview.

Your experience in CLMV

McCann-Erickson sent me to Cambodia in 1995 to help set up its agency there. After five years, it started to expand to the other CLMV countries.

There were plenty of opportunities, but foreign agencies saw there were [also] high risks. Hence I later decided to form a joint venture, River Orchid, with my foreign partner in 2000.

During the subsequent 15 years we gradually expanded to have offices in all CLMV markets, using Thailand as our base. We had many Thai clients as well as some foreign firms that had their bases in Thailand.

Then last year, [French multinational advertising and public relations company] Havas, which had no office in Indochina, took a 51-per-cent share in the company.

With the acquisition, we have gained access to technology, work systems, funding sources and a larger client base, and we can get insight into the trends in developed markets, which usually lead the way into other markets.

This is another step for the company, which has grained strengths and can serve its clients better, while also offering more opportunities for our employees.

How does Havas stand in the world’s advertising markets?

There are five or six large agency groups that command about |70-80 per cent of the world’s markets, and Havas is one of them. |We are strong in Europe and the US but less known in Asia. But |our strength is not only about the size.

While we are listed in the French and New York stock markets, our major shareholder is the Bollore Group, which owns a family business that runs many [other] businesses.

As a family business, it does not have to focus solely on short-term profit, which is good for our business that operates in high-growth markets.

The CLMV economies are growing by 6.5-9 per cent, with more than 10-per-cent growth in advertising.

Havas Riverorchid currently has 240 staff. Only 10-20 of them are in Bangkok, since we use Thailand as only a base to take care of our clients.

We grew by 29 per cent during the first four months of this year.

Even though Havas is far away, it has seen that it will reap huge benefits over the long term. Thai companies should also see this opportunity. They must have courage and a risk-management system in place.

Most Thai firms are still fearful and just send their goods [into other markets] first. But they won’t survive in these markets if they do not take things seriously. Small and medium-sized enterprises, in particular. This is because they have little experience in conducting overseas businesses. But I think CLMV can be the test markets for them, since we have many advantages such as in language, culture and proximity. They can also have border trade as support.

How do you define your company’s role, a CLMV market specialist?

We define ourselves as “communication specialist”. We can help conduct market and consumer research, plan market entry, [undertake] creative works, digital communications, PR retail marketing, event marketing, and so on.

Where we can’t help much is in distribution and legal.

Our billing reached US$30 million last year, an increase of 24 |per cent from 2014. Most of our clients are multinational firms including Unilever, Coca-Cola, Samsung, Nestle, and Johnson & Johnson.

The CLMV markets have very high potential. We have seen new customers coming in nearly every week, especially in Myanmar, where a lot of Japanese companies have been going to. Many Vietnamese firms have also come to Myanmar. We have also started to see some CLMV brands coming out to invest in other countries, such as Dao Coffee.

What are among your key achievements?

We have helped SCG in Cambodia since the start when it opened a cement factory there a decade ago. We also helped it to launch a new brand, K cement, which has been the No 1 cement brand [in Cambodia] since Day 1.

Other customers include TC Pharma, which we helped solve problems for taking its Sponsor electrolyte drink into the Vietnamese market, where consumers usually perceive that energy drinks must have a yellow colour. Gambol sneakers are also our client in Cambodia.

Thai firms often fail because they think these markets are the same as the Thai market, but they are not. The TV ad rates |in Cambodia, for example, are |very cheap: about Bt20,000 per minute, compared with Bt300,000-Bt400,000 in Thailand. Or in Vietnam, you shouldn’t use the southern dialect in a TV ad in the north and vice versa.
