ENTERTAINMENT

VARIETY SHOWS, dramas, news and sports programmes remain key to retaining viewership, according to Bangkok Broadcasting and Television, the operator of Channel 7.

Two years after the arrival of more players in the digital free-to-air TV broadcasting ecosystem, the audience shares of market leaders like Channel 7 were dented.

According to Nielsen Thailand, Channel 7’s share sagged 17.3 per cent to 32.7 per cent last month from 39.5 per cent in the same month last year.

To keep at least that market share as well as to boost its ratings, BBTV is preparing a new line-up of top-tier TV shows in four key categories – variety and game shows, prime-time dramas, news programmes, and telecasts of top-tier sports events.

“The mass audience remains our key target group. So we have to make sure that the content we develop and create or acquire will be premium offerings to cover all viewers’ needs, ranging from reality shows and travel programmes to talent and variety talk shows,” managing director Palakorn Somsuwan said yesterday.

Recently, Channel 7 launched “World War Star Thailand” on Sundays during the prime-time slot of 3.30-5pm.

Under the management of Heliconia H Group, which also produces “Iron Chef Thailand”, this talent show is set to search for the best performers in singing, dancing, music, lip sync, modelling, and comedy shows.

Miss Thailand 2016 will return to its home station in the form of a reality show to be aired late on Wednesday nights in July and August. Prime-time soap operas will continue to be the station’s flagship offerings. This year’s line-up includes “Ploeng Pranang”, “Tilip See Thong” and “Likhit Risaya”.

For sports, Channel 7 will broadcast live the AFC (Asian Football Confederation) Champions League 2016 and FIVB World Grand Prix 2016’s international round, which will kick off with a game between Thailand’s national women’s volleyball team and China’s on June 10.

Besides the content strategy, BBTV is also emphasising on-ground activities to promote its TV stars and programmes as well as to deepen its engagement with its target audience in the provinces with the help of its subsidiary Media Studios.

Media Studios is also the publisher of Channel 7 magazine, which is the first publication of this top-rated TV station.

To cash in on the emergence of online media, BBTV has another subsidiary – BBTV New Media – to manage websites and mobile applications for its Channel 7 station.

Recently, Channel 7 launched a new season of marketing promotions via its mobile application called “Do7HD” to increase viewing frequency.

Viewers have to click on “check-in” at the bottom of the app when watching TV programmes to collect points that can be redeemed for awards and prizes.

Through a major effort in developing its new media platform, its main website and application (ch7.com and BBTV Ch7) and its time-shift website and application (Bugaboo.TV and Bugaboo TV) enjoy a reach of more than 20 million impressions per month.

EXPANSION

S KHONKAEN Foods, a major producer of traditional Thai foods, is negotiating the setting up of a joint venture in Los Angeles with a top trading firm that has a strong distribution network in the United States.

The Thai company will also have its seafood-products subsidiary listed on the Market for Alternative Investment by November, so there is a flagship entity when it comes to penetrating international markets.

Chief executive officer Charoen Rujirasopon said the negotiations with the US-based trading firm, which is owned by a Thai national, were nearly complete. If the talks are successful, the joint venture should be set up by the end of this year to look after the distribution of S Khonkaen’s products, including snacks and chilled food, in the US, Canada and Mexico.

“We will appoint a local manufacturer in the US to produce products via an OEM [original equipment manufacturing] contract, so we can control all product formulas. However, in the long term, we plan to build our own production facilities in the US once we have high sales volume or worth about Bt100 million per year,” Charoen said.

He added that the joint venture would be set up in line with S Khonkaen’s vision to become a leading manufacturer and distributor of Thai foods in the world market by 2020.

The company set up S Khonkaen Foods (Netherlands) three years ago to oversee the European market and has appointed a sole agent for the Australian market. This year, S Khonkaen will appoint another agent to look after the Middle East market, he said.

“Our aim is to boost the contribution from international markets from 8 per cent to about 30 per cent by 2020,” he said.

Charoen added that S Khonkaen expected its annual sales revenue to hit Bt6 billion by 2020, of which about 30 per cent would come from export. Over this period, the company also hopes for 15-per-cent organic growth, while the rest will be driven by its joint-venture possibilities for snack and seafood businesses in the US, mainland China, Hong Kong and Japan.

S Khonkaen posted Bt2.4 billion in sales revenue last year, up 11 per cent over 2014. The company targets 15-per -cent growth in sales revenue this year, and grew by 11-12 per cent year on year in the first quarter.

The current contribution from exports stands at 8 per cent. The company has been exporting goods to some 20 different markets, including chilled seafood to the US and Europe, and meat-based products such as pork sausage and shredded pork to Hong Kong and mainland China.

TRUEVISIONS, the country’s largest subscription-based TV service provider, has jumped on the video-on-demand (VOD) bandwagon with the aim of retaining its customer base.

Marketing director Sueksith Cholasuek said yesterday that the company had witnessed a rise of customer demand in this segment and had spent more than two years developing its VOD software so as to adopt this new interface and enhance its customers’ viewing experience.

The new service will be available both on the company’s pay-TV service and on the TrueVisions Anywhere mobile application from July 7.

Subscribers to the Platinum or Gold package will receive a free-trial privilege whereby they can watch 20 movies per month until August 31. After that, they will have to pay about Bt50 to Bt100 per movie as regular customers.

Sueksith stressed that the price ranges of TrueVisions’ new service were competitive among VOD providers.

According to a source , other players generally offer their customers buffet packages. Prime Time charges start from Bt99 per month. Iflix’s monthly charge begins at Bt100. Hooq’s monthly package starts from Bt119. Mono Maxxx’s monthly charge is Bt129. Hollywood HD’s is from Bt199 and Netflix’s monthly package is from Bt280.

Sueksith said this new VOD service was a part of the company’s customer-retention programme. Therefore, its main target is premium customers.

“We hope to see a half of our 300,000 premium customers [who pay for Platinum or Gold packages] to use this new service regularly by the end of this year.”

TrueVisions aims to reduce its average customer turn-over rate to less than 1 per cent from 1.5 per cent now. With this new VOD service, it also hopes to see its premium customer base increase by 15 per cent.

Apart from entertainment content, the company is also centring on live sport programmes.

EPL deal in final stages

Sueksith revealed that TrueVisions’ negotiations with Qatar’s BeIN Sports to broadcast live English Premier League matches were in the final stages. The result is expected to be announced by the end of this month.

Previously, the company said live EPL matches might air via BeIN Sports channels 1-4, but with the large number of live matches per season, the existing capacity might not be sufficient. Therefore, there might be an additional channel.

Microsoft on mission to deepen digital inclusion

CEO Nadella pledges longterm relationship with Thailand.

CEO Nadella pledges longterm relationship with Thailand.

MICROSOFT has donated more than US$2 million (Bt70 million) worth |of free software and training to 430 non-profit organisations in Thailand, helping communities across the country to fulfil unmet needs, the company said.

It has also equipped non-profit organisations with the right tools to empower them to achieve more for their beneficiaries, it added.

This is a part of Microsoft’s $1-billion donation for use of Microsoft cloud services by non-profit organisations and university researchers around the world over the next three years.

The $1-billion donation aims to provide support to more than 75,000 non-profit agencies worldwide and was launched under the umbrella of Microsoft Philanthropies, a new organisation within Microsoft dedicated to social contributions through technology.

Thailand will be one of the countries to benefit under this $1-billion initiative.

//

Microsoft chief executive officer Satya Nadella said yesterday at the “Technology for Good” event in Bangkok that throughout its 22-year presence in Thailand, Microsoft has continuously worked hard to be a long-term partner with the country.

The company has collaborated with non-profit entities and businesses from around the world to help identify how cloud technology can break down barriers to digital inclusion.

“At Microsoft, our mission is to empower every person and every organisation on the planet to achieve more. Delivering on this mission starts with great technology, but great technology alone is not enough. Too many of its benefits have yet to reach the people who need them most. To fulfil our company’s mission, we ourselves need to do more – empowerment begins with inclusion,” said Nadella.

One Thai non-profit entity working with Microsoft to improve society is the Population and Community Development Association (PDA), founded in 1974 by development activist Mechai Viravaidya.

PDA also operates the Mechai Pattana School in Buri Ram province. Known affectionately as the Bamboo School since its foundation in 2009, the school serves as a lifelong learning centre for the entire community and a hub for economic and social advancement beyond the normal academic curriculum.

Mechai said that for more than 10 years, PDA and Microsoft have been engaged in a formal partnership to support Thai education and promote lifelong learning in rural areas.

“Our collaboration with Microsoft has given us access to cloud-based technologies such as Office 365, Skype, and Sway that help us get more done for our organisation and deepen our training and education for our students,” said Meechai.

“At the Bamboo School, we do not train youth to merely search the Internet, but we also want to teach them how to use technology to enhance community empowerment in agriculture, health and, of course, education.

“Through Microsoft technology, we empower our students to be leaders of their communities and drive social change,” he added.

For example, Microsoft employee volunteers provide training for farmers to develop online advertising materials for their dried banana products, including creating their own email and social media accounts to market their products to a broader customer base. Sales increased by 10 per cent as a result of these marketing efforts.

“While there is no question about the impact of technology on people’s lives, there is a lot that remains to be done to bridge challenges in bridging technological gaps and skills development for teachers, especially for the network of 1,000 schools in remote areas that PDA is trying to reach out to,” said Meechai. “I believe that the commitment shown by Satya Nadella and Microsoft today represents another step towards closing this gap in Thailand.”

Microsoft CEO Nadella yesterday also reaffirmed support to empower the developer community in Thailand with Microsoft tools and services in order to enable developers to maximise reach, create innovations that drive the country’s digital economic progress and transform lives.

“Microsoft remains committed to supporting and empowering the developer community in Thailand,” said Nadella.

At the Developer Day, an event that is part of Nadella’s first official visit to the Kingdom since becoming CEO, attendees saw how cloud and integrated technologies can help businesses evolve and grow for the future.

Nadella reinforced that given today’s increasingly mobile-first, cloud-first world, developers will play a key role in enabling organisations to embrace digital transformation.

During his time in Bangkok, Nadella also had the opportunity to engage with a number of top start-ups in Thailand and share with them his vision for the future of technology and its role in driving social and economic progress.

This developer event builds on the momentum from Build 2016 held in San Francisco in March, where Microsoft outlined new developments that would open up even more opportunities for developers.

BETAGRO GROUP is consolidating six business units into two to allow the agribusiness and food group to play a more prominent role in the regional and world markets. The six old business units were food, swine, poultry, regional, feedmill and animal health. The two new core businesses are agro and food.

The consolidation started at the beginning of this year.

Narongchai Srisantisaeng, chief operating officer of the food business, said yesterday that the reshuffle will support the group’s strategy to align all businesses clearly in the same direction.

Enterprise resource planning software has been employed to sharpen efficiency and competitiveness.

The new integrated business management package will allow Betagro to collect, store, manage and interpret data from many activities, including product planning and purchasing, manufacturing or service delivery, marketing and sales, inventory management, as well as shipping and payment.

“We are also setting up our first food innovation centre located at the group’s head office in the North Park venue on Vibhavadi-Rangsit Road in Bangkok.

“The centre, which will be opened by the end of this year, will be in charge of the development of new food product and packaging initiatives to be in line with the real demand of today’s consumers.

“It will help promote the development of food knowledge and technical information as well as provide the right solutions to any problems raised by individual consumers in the food business group,” he said.

Founded in 1967 with registered capital of only Bt10 million, it produced and distributed animal feed. Its head office was located in Prom Prab in Bangkok with its first feedmill in Samut Prakan’s Phra Pradaeng district.

The group has grown from strength from strength, beginning with the establishment |of its first animal husbandry facility in Nakhon Ratchasima’s Pak Chong district, comprising poultry and swine farming, a feedmill and hatchery.

It was followed by the company’s expansion into the strategically located and resource-rich province of Lop Buri.

There, comprehensive production facilities that included feed production, a hatchery, poultry and swine-raising, fresh and frozen chicken-processing, hygienic pork-processing and frozen SPF pork product-processing, were soon to position Betagro as a leading conglomerate in Thailand’s agro industry. Betagro posted Bt25 billion in revenues in the first quarter of this year, of which Bt8 billion was from the agro business and Bt17 billion from the food business.

This was similar to the same quarter of last year, but the group expects its whole-year revenue to reach about Bt100 billion, of which Bt33 billion will come from agribusiness and Bt67 billion from food. Revenue was Bt96 billion last year.

“We are expecting tremendous growth from food rather than agribusiness, which is in line with the group’s strategy to add value to our food products, rather than sell live animals,” he said.

Betagro exports its food products to more than 30 markets around the world, including Japan, England, Hong Kong, Scandinavia and Europe.

The group plans to penetrate new overseas markets, focusing on the Middle East, neighbouring countries in Asean and South Africa.

“We want to strengthen Betagro’s current positioning and market share to be among the top three chicken manufacturers and exporters in Thailand,” he said.

The group will increase the sales contribution from its own-brand products – Betagro, the group’s standard brand for food products, and S-Pure, the premium brand, which will also become two flagship brands to penetrate the local market and for exporting into the region and other potential markets around the world.

However, 97 per cent of the group’s food business is still dominated by OEM (original equipment manufacturing) for other brands.

“We plan to increase the sales contribution from our own brands from currently only 2-3 per cent to about 5 per cent in three years,” he said.

“They [own-brand products] will be further promoted into regional brands to penetrate the AEC[Asean Economic Community] markets,” he added.

INVESTMENT

PFP GROUP, a major frozen-seafood processor, plans to set up a halal food plant in Malaysia at a cost of Bt150 million to Bt200 million.

“We chose Malaysia as it has strong credibility in the production of halal foods, being recognised by other Muslim countries, rather than Thailand or other non-Muslim countries,” executive director Thawatchai Ratanapisit said yesterday.

The company is negotiating with a potential partner in Malaysia to set up manufacturing and distribution facilities for halal products in the country. In Thailand, PFP operates two food-processing plants in the southern province of Songkhla. One is for fish tofu, fish tofu slide, chikuwa fish cakes, fish and shrimp chips. Its capacity is 16 tonnes per day.

The other plant is for many products including imitation crab sticks, snow crab, fish tofu, Thai fish cakes, imitation crab claw, and imitation shrimp. Its capacity is 81 tonnes per day.

The group will also gear up for more exports, with the aim of 10-per-cent growth annually. The main markets abroad will be China and Muslim countries, especially Central East and Indonesia.

Chairman Thawee Piyapatana said global demand for seafood was still increasing, based on consumer preference for healthy foods.

PFP products are in line with the trend in product quality and freshness. They are also guaranteed halal.

PFP has a research and development department to create more products that suit the needs and preferred tastes of consumers.

PFP has been shipping processed seafood products to many countries worldwide for more than 30 years. It now covers 21 overseas markets.

Thawatchai said that last year, PFP’s international sales passed Bt1.3 billion, of which 72 per cent was to the Asian market, 12 per cent to Europe, 8 per cent to North America and 8 per cent to Oceania (Australia and New Zealand).

This year, PFP plans to continue expanding distribution channels to European and North American markets.

These markets comprise consumers with high purchasing power who opt for healthy foods.

The markets are directly relevant to the positioning of PFP products, whose target group is the middle class.

In Asia, the focus is on China, which is the biggest market for imitation crab sticks.

For the CLMV market (Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar and Vietnam), PFP will focus on expansion to supermarkets and the large-scale modern trade in cities.

PFP is exploring new markets such as Muslims in Indonesia in line with the government’s policy to make Thailand one of the world’s top |five halal food exporters within five years.

The company’s strategy for expansion to overseas markets this year is to develop products to serve changing consumer behaviour, increase the quantity purchased by existing customers by 5-10 per cent by offering special promotions and campaigns, and seek new customers via various exhibitions and trade shows in new markets, especially in the Muslim countries to increase halal market share, Thawatchai said.

TETRA PAK (Thailand) plans to reinforce its leadership position in the food and beverage processing and packaging industry this year.

The company is focusing on providing a breakthrough portfolio that delivers outstanding performance and quality, while establishing long-term partnerships to drive sustainable business growth for customers.

In line with its 2020 Vision that outlines key trends in the industry, the world’s leading full-system supplier is differentiating itself through customer-led innovation, marketing director Ratanasiri Tilokskulchai said yesterday.

This year, manufacturers will increasingly look to the growing demand for healthy foods and beverages that also address the needs of their busy lifestyles, she said.

The liquid food and beverage market slowed down last year, due to the economic environment and weaker consumer confidence.

However, several innovative products with healthier concepts and redesigned packages were launched to gain the attention of consumers.

According to research by Tetra Pak Thailand, last year the ready-to-drink dairy category reached 1.67 billion litres, soya milk and cereal drinks 748 million litres, juices 143 million litres and ready-to-drink tea 660 million litres.

“To increase our visibility and awareness of Tetra Pak’s leadership position as a full-system supplier among customers in Thailand and across the region, we are participating in THAIFEX-World of Food Asia 2016, the leading trade exhibition for food and beverage,” she added.

DTAC committed to retaining market share, CEO says

THE COUNTRY’S second-largest cellular operator Total Access Communication (DTAC) will fight hard to maintain its position, said chief executive officer Lars Norling.

He said the company had a strong bandwidth portfolio totalling 50 megahertz, consisting of 15MHz on the 2.1-gigahertz spectrum, 10MHz on 850MHz and 25MHz on 1,800MHz. The latter two were granted under a CAT Telecom concession that will expire in late 2018.

Moreover, DTAC is in talks with CAT on the possibility of jointly utilising the state agency’s idle 20MHz on the 1,800MHz spectrum to offer fourth-generation service.

One of DTAC’s targets this year is to stabilise market share, currently at 28 per cent of revenue.

DTAC has declined to take part in the re-auction of a forfeited 900MHz licence this Friday. To ensure sustainable growth, it has every intention of securing sufficient bandwidth in future auctions to serve growing data demand.

As competition in the wireless broadband market gets tougher, Advanced Info Service is set to grab a 900MHz licence, totalling 10MHz bandwidth, in the auction on Friday as its subsidiary Advanced Wireless Network is now the only bidder.

AIS currently holds 15MHz of the 2.1GHz spectrum and 15MHz of the 1,800MHz spectrum, both under National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission licences.

It is in the process of signing several deals with TOT as part of a planned partnership to offer 3G service on the state agency’s 15MHz on the 2.1GHz band.

True Corp boasts a total of 55MHz bandwidth, comprising 15MHz of the 2.1GHz spectrum, 15MHz of the 1,800MHz spectrum, and 10MHz of the 900MHz spectrum.

It has also formed a partnership with CAT to offer 3G service on 15MHz of CAT’s 850MHz spectrum.

DTAC had around 25.5 million subscribers, of whom 3.1 million are on its 4G network, 20 million on 3G, and the rest on 2G.

Norling said he expected telecom-industry revenue this year to grow by 3 per cent.

According to its filing to the Stock Exchange of Thailand recently, DTAC expected its service revenue this year, excluding interconnection charges, to be in the range of a flat to slight increase from last year.

Meanwhile, DTAC has taken another step in its plan to become the leading digital organisation and employer of choice by fostering the start-up spirit and create “intrapreneurship” among employees.

BANGKOK Mass Transit System, the operator of the Skytrain elevated train network, has prepared as much as Bt60 billion to continue investing in the country’s rail system.

“We are interested in taking part in any of the government’s projects related to rail operations, both metro lines and commuter routes,” Keeree Kanjanapas, chairman of BTS Group Holdings, parent of Bangkok Mass Transit System (BTSC), said yesterday.

He was speaking after a signing ceremony for two separate contracts for the purchase of 46 new four-car trains, for a total of 184 cars.

Germany-based Siemens will provide 22 of the trains and China-based CRRC Changchun Railway Vehicles the other 24.

The cost of the deals is more than Bt11 billion.

The new trains will support growing ridership on the Skytrain’s Sukhumvit Line, which carries up to 900,000 people per day between Mo Chit Station and Bearing Station, and its Silom Line from National Stadium Station to Bang Wha Station, running a total distance of 36.25 kilometres.

This will include passenger services on the 13km extension of the Sukhumvit Line to Samut Prakan and 19km extension to Ku Kot.

Keeree said major train |components would be sourced from leading international suppliers and also local suppliers, especially for interior equipment such as stanchions, seats and hand straps, which would be incorporated in the final assembly.

“The funding will be in two parts. One is from the group’s cash and the other will be a loan,” he said.

The first batch of new trains will arrive in early 2018 and the rest delivered in 2020.

After completion of delivery, trial runs will be carried out prior to the trains being put into service.

Somkid Jatusripitak, the deputy prime minister responsible for economic affairs, said he was there presiding over the ceremony to thank Keeree for the major investment despite the economy’s slow recovery.

Though his outlook for the economy for this quarter is positive, it is not easy to push for economic growth amid the country’s current political situation and the world’s economic slowdown, he said.

The country’s economic expansion is also about 70 per cent dependent on exports.

“If the private sector does |not invest, how can the coun|try’s economy grow?” Somkid said.

5 fail to meet licence fee deadline for 3rd instalment

ศาสตร์เกษตรดินปุ๋ย : ขอบคุณแหล่งข้อมูล : หนังสือพิมพ์ The Nation

http://www.nationmultimedia.com/business/5-fail-to-meet-licence-fee-deadline-for-3rd-instal-30286571.html

FIVE of the 22 digital TV stations yesterday failed to meet the deadline for the third instalment of upfront licence fees, with a combined value of Bt2.388 billion, according to the broadcasting regulator.

Takorn Tantasith, secretary-general of the National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC), said Bangkok Media and Broadcasting, the operator of PPTV; GMM Grammy, the operator of One 31 and GMM 25; Triple V Broadcast, the operator of Thairath TV; and Bright Television, the operator of the Bright TV news channel, missed the deadline, which was 4.30pm.

“At this point, we need further explanation from those digital-TV licensees on this matter. However, after the failure to meet this responsibility, they have to pay additional interest of 7.5 per cent per annum on top of their instalment payment in accordance with the broadcasting regulation,” he said.

However, Takorn said his administration would give them two more weeks to pay up before issuing written requests.

As of yesterday’s deadline, the NBTC received a total of Bt6.485 billion from 17 digital-TV licensees. They were Channel 3HD, 3SD, 3Family, MCOT HD, MCOT Family, True4U, TNN24, Nation TV, Now26, Channel 7HD, Amarin TV, Workpoint TV, Channel 8, Mono 29, VoiceTV, Springnews TV and New TV.

On behalf of the group of that decided to postpone their payments, Kematat Paladesh, president of Bangkok Media and Broadcasting, explained that they were waiting for the final ruling by the Central Administrative Court after those five television stations sued the NBTC last August for Bt9.55 billion in damages over the regulator’s alleged negligence in marshalling the transition from analog to digital TV.

The court is expected to make a decision this Friday.

In this round of payments, the NBTC expects to receive total revenue of about Bt9.26 billion inclusive of value-added tax, paid by 24 terrestrial-based digital TV broadcasters.

Of that total, about Bt3.94 billion will be from seven broadcasters of high-definition variety digital TV; around Bt3.19 billion from seven standard-definition variety broadcasters; about Bt1.81 billion from seven SD news broadcasters; and the remainder of about Bt377 million from three family channels.

Early this year, the NBTC revoked Thai TV Co’s two digital licences – one for a news channel and one in the family category – after it refused to pay the second instalment of its upfront licence fees last year. However, Bangkok Bank, the financial guarantor of Thai TV Co, paid the amount on behalf of its client.

Bangkok Bank is reported to have taken the responsibility for the new round of payment for its client as well. According to the NBTC, Thai TV has to pay a total of Bt384.344 million for the third instalment of its licence fees. Of the total amount, Bt260.651 million will be for its news channel and Bt123.692 million for its family channel.

Among those paying their third instalments, BEC World’s BEC-Multimedia, which operates 3HD, 3SD and 3Family, was the biggest spender with a total of Bt1.167.594 billion. Of that figure, Bt593.85 million was for the 3HD variety channel, Bt446.19 million for the 3SD variety channel and Bt127.544 million for the 3Family channel.

True Corporation ranked third, paying about Bt712.834 million for its True4U SD variety channel and TNN24 news channel.

Nation Multimedia Group paid Bt692.932 million for its two digital TV licences. Of that, Bt262.792 million was paid by NMG’s NBC Next Vision for the Nation |TV news station while Bt430.14 million was paid by its sister | company Bangkok Business Broadcasting for the Now 26 SD variety station.

State-owned media enterprise MCOT showed up last week to pay a total of Bt679.45 million for |the MCOT HD variety channel (Bt553.19 million) and MCOT Family channel (Bt126.26 million).

Takorn said his office would transfer the revenue it had received to the state soon.
