SIAM CEMENT GROUP, the country’s leading industrial conglomerate, yesterday reported a 23-per-cent surge in first-quarter net profit that trounced the consensus estimate.

The continued robust petrochemical business contributed most to SCG’s results, but the improved performance of its packaging and cement units played a big part in the surprise upside.

Kasikorn Securities said SCG’s consolidated first-quarter net profit of Bt13.62 billion was 24 per cent higher than its projection, because of 5-per-cent growth of the country’s cement demand in the three-month period.

Most analysts had expected cement consumption to edge up by only 1-2 per cent in the first quarter.

Roongrote Rangsiyopash president and chief executive officer of SCG, said the government’s infrastructure investment projects had started to affect the country’s cement consumption, although the commercial and residential segments had continued to show flat and negative growth during the first quarter.

“Notably, we saw a lot of sales activities in late March, which I guess was due to [buyers] building up their inventories prior to the long [Songkran] holiday.

“We may have to wait for April and May’s sales figures,” said the chief of SCG, which controls about 40 per cent of the domestic cement market.

SCG expects local cement demand to grow by 3-5 per cent this year. The upper end of the forecast hinges on the government’s capability to push ahead its infrastructure projects.

SCG logged flat sales of Bt110 billion in the first quarter, chiefly due to the fall in petrochemical prices. Profit for the period, however, was up 19 per cent from the previous quarter.

Exports declined 8 per cent to Bt29.57 billion, accounting for 27 per cent of the group’s sales, due to the decline in chemical prices and the start-up of its cement plants in Cambodia and Indonesia, which reduced its shipments from Thailand.

SCG’s higher-than-expected profits came from its investment in research and development, which helped its products fatten profit margins during the upcycle.

Its packaging business has acquired some companies, and expanded into the “end-packaging” segment.

The profit contribution from associated companies in the petrochemical business was also better.

The upcycle in the petrochemical business will continue for two to three more years, he said.

The chemical business contributed two-thirds of SCG’s profit in the first three months, or Bt9.11 billion, up 84.5 per cent year-on-year, followed by the cement-building business materials business at Bt3.29 billion (down 7.5 per cent) and the packaging business at Bt1.26 billion (up 42.9 per cent).

Most equity research houses – from Bualuang Securities and KGI to Trinity and PhillipCapital – had forecast SCG to report net profit of about Bt11 billion in the first quarter.

Roongrote said domestic cement prices slid by more than 1 per cent in the first quarter.

Competition in cement and building materials in the region has stiffened, partly due to the increased participation of Chinese players, which hurt producers’ profitability.

SCG’s cement plants in Cambodia have reached near full capacity, and 80 per cent in Indonesia.

The group expects its new cement projects in Myanmar and Laos to take three to six months to reach full capacity after their commencements next quarter and in middle of next year.

SCG was seeking partners to invest in the Vietnamese cement industry rather than building a greenfield plant there. The market in that country is facing a cement glut.

SCG’s stock yesterday closed up 0.82 per cent to Bt492.

Zalora confirms sale of businesses in Thailand, Vietnam

Zalora, a fashion-oriented e-commerce site, confirmed today that it would sell Zalora Thailand and Zalora Vietnam ventures.

In a statement, it said the sale agreements were signed and settlement is expected in the coming days. However, it did not specify the name of the buyer.

There were reports that Central Group was eager to buy the businesses.

Zalora is the region’s market leader in fashion e-commerce with presence in Singapore, Malaysia & Brunei, Indonesia, Philippines, Hong Kong and Taiwan.

ZALORA Group CEO, Michele Ferrario, said: “This move will allow us to capture opportunities and strengthen our position in our markets, as we gear towards accelerating our growth. We are happy to have contributed to the vibrancy of Thailand and Vietnam’s e-commerce scene, and we trust that the future owners will continue to build on what we started. We remain committed to providing consumers in the region the best online and mobile shopping experience possible.”

Central steps up e-commerce drive

AT CENTRAL GROUP, online shopping contributed only 0.5 per cent of total sales last year. In a country where mobile-phone penetration is more than 100 per cent, with smartphones accounting for 70 per cent of phones in use, it is more than obvious that the retail giant must step up its e-commerce to be ahead of rival retailers and small tech companies.

This makes a convincing argument for Central’s acquisition of Zalora’s e-commerce businesses in Thailand and Vietnam. An executive of Central confirmed the reported acquisition, saying more details should be released next week pending the wrapping-up of legal documents.

Zalora is Asia’s leading online fashion destination and is the largest fashion-focused e-commerce site in Southeast Asia, with presence in Singapore, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Thailand, Vietnam, Hong Kong and Brunei.

The service has been available in Thailand for three years, offering choices of shoes, clothes and beauty products from local, regional, and international brands. It is now No 1 in the fashion category for online shoppers, who make more than 2 million visits to the site per month. More than 45 per cent of Zalora’s sales in Thailand come through mobile devices.

Such an active environment is something that traditional retailers like Central want to experience. Expanding into online business is also in line with Central Group’s vision set by its chief executive officer Tos Chirathivat, who realised that the emergence of online shopping would significantly affect the group’s retailing business.

At a recent media conference, he said the Internet would be the future of the group’s retail business.

Central established COL, its online shopping unit, in March last year after a one-year trial period. Last year, while Central Group reported overall retail sales of about Bt160 billion, COL generated Bt800 million in sales. That was equivalent to only 0.5 per cent of the total.

In a recent interview, COL chief Worawut Ounjai unveiled an ambitious plan to boost at proportion to 10 per cent of Central’s sales by 2020. He also unveiled a plan to allocate more than Bt1 billion to improve the business infrastructure as well as acquire local and international firms involved in website and logistics developments.

Mergers and acquisitions (M&As) as well as joint ventures were also options to grow the online business, both within and beyond Thailand. The group was yearning for any partnership that would result in better penetration into the overseas markets as well as product sourcing.

“In Thailand and other countries in Southeast Asia, online shopping activity accounts for only 0.5 per cent of total retail sales today. The worldwide average value of online shopping accounts for about 5.6 per cent of total retail sales, with China the highest, where online shopping is about 12 per cent of total retail sales,” Worawut said.

Zalora would fit well as a piece in the big e-commerce jigsaw.

Punnamas Vichitkulwongsa, CEO of Ascend Group, another e-commerce site, said this acquisition would be positive for the online shopping market as a whole. What matters is how the large retail brand would leverage Zalora’s strengths. COL can be a key player in fashion e-commerce if this acquisition enables stable online and offline relations with customers, he said.

Shannon Kalayanamitr, chief executive officer and founder of Moxy’s, an online shopping site for women, saw this as a sign of market consolidation.

She noted that M&As also took place in other parts of Southeast Asia, particularly Indonesia. Technology brings down borders and barriers to entry, she said. For this reason, Lazada is doing better in drawing online shoppers even though Central has been around in the retail business for decades.

“Acquiring Zalora [would] not only help its fashion category but also bring it into Vietnam with much e-commerce expertise as Zalora [Rocket people] are in the first class in Asia,” she said. M&As are good for the online ecosystem in Asean, as a sizeable number of potential buyers are out there, she added.

WIND ENERGY

WIND ENERGY Holding yesterday flatly denied alleged misconduct, threatening to take legal action against individuals who spread such negative news.

Last Friday, an anonymous letter landed in The Nation’s mailbox. The sender said he or she was a Wind Energy employee who witnessed fraudulent practices after the company went through a shareholder restructuring in 2014.

The sender also said copies of the letter had been sent to the Stock Exchange of Thailand and the Securities and Exchange Commission, among others.

Wind Energy is not traded on the stock market.

Many of the allegations were directed towards Nop Narongdej, president of KPN Group, as chairman of Wind Energy.

A few more executives including Emma Collins, chief executive officer of Wind Energy, were implicated as accessories.

Wind Energy responded to The Nation’s inquiries yesterday.

“The company would like to clarify that the accusations in the anonymous letter are not true and there are no corrupt practices in any way,” it said.

“The person who wrote or issued the anonymous letter acted in bad faith to deliberately frame the company with a view to damage the company’s business … Such [an] act, therefore, constitutes a wrongful act against the company and the executives who were mentioned and is considered a civil and criminal offence,” it said.

In the letter, the sender accused Nop of financing a vacation in France with the company’s money and extorting funds from the company to buy his mother-in-law a luxury car.

He was also accused of transferring funds from Wind Energy to KPN Energy, a unit of KPN that was established to take control of Wind Energy.

Wind Energy said its business had been lawfully carried out and the operation had expanded.

The company is now searching for the identity of the person who sent the letter. It said civil and criminal procedures were being prepared against the person and all his or her supporters.

Yod, left, joins hands with Thanapong Na-ranong, vice president and head of venture capital at Intouch, during yesterday’s official announcement of InVent’s series-B investment in Wongnai.

FIVE-YEAR-OLD start-up Wongnai, the country’s largest food and lifestyle review portal and application, yesterday officially announced it was receiving series-B funding from Intouch Holding’s venture-capital arm, InVent.

The move is expected to result in Wongnai increasing its revenue by 200 per cent this year, and to drive the company towards a listing on the Market for Alternative Investment or the Stock Exchange of Thailand in the next three years.

Co-founder and CEO Yod Chinsupakul said the company planned to use the new funding to expand its business in three directions: into the provinces; into additional review categories; and diversifying from the advertising model only to charging a transaction fee.

First off is to expand its market coverage to Hua Hin and Nakhon Ratchasima, which will give it six offices outside Bangkok by the year’s end.

Second is to cover more lifestyle review categories by adding the travel industry this year.

“Wongnai is not just about food reviews, as lifestyle reviewing also has potential. We have the beauty and spa review category, which last year accounted for 15 per cent of our traffic of 9 million visitors per month, and contributed around 10 per cent to revenue,” Yod said.

Last but not least, Wongnai’s revenue stream will also be transaction-fee based, via the offering of deals and delivery service.

Currently, the business partners with LINE Man to provide delivery for 1,000 recommended restaurants out of 80,000 Bangkok restaurants in Wongnai’s database.

It might add delivery service for more restaurants in the future, he added. “Investment capital will be used to continue our growth, including increasing our monthly active users from 600,000 to one million, and to increase staff from 80 to 110 by the end of this year,” he explained.

The CEO said Wongnai’s focus on Thailand, and not only in the capital, was the main strength that had attracted InVent to commit to series-B investment.

Thanapong Na-ranong, vice president and head of the venture-capital team at Intouch, said InVent this year was concentrating on investing in series-B start-ups, due to a relative lack of investors in such businesses and the lower risk. With a 2016 investment budget of over Bt200 million, InVent plans to invest in four start-ups, most of them series-B entities that usually each require more than Bt30 million.

InVent is a corporate fund, so it aims to invest in start-ups with a product or service that can be utilised, and is not looking to invest simply for financial gain, he said.

“Normally, a return on investment for series-B takes around three years, therefore we are set on driving Wongnai to an initial public offering in the next three years,” he added. InVent owns 10 per cent in Wongnai, while the Japan-based Recruit Group holds 35 per cent, and the founders own the remaining 55 per cent.

INVESTMENT

THE Dhara Dhevi Chiang Mai hotel plans to spend Bt5 billion on expansion, including developing luxury residences, after it was acquired by Inter Far East Energy Corporation Plc last year.

Sittichai Phonsapanan, vice chairman and chief executive officer of IFEC, said yesterday that the hotel plans to work with a listed high-end property developer to expand and build condominiums as well as pool residences.

The new investment is set to kick off, as it plans to exit rehabilitation next month.

“The board of directors of the hotel, which is our subsidiary, approved to establish a joint venture for the new investment on a 40-rai plot of land with a budget of Bt5 billion,” he said.

The new projects will be a six-star hotel feature 80 keys with space of 50 square metres each, four condominium towers with a total 200 units beginning at 60m2 and 16 pool villas starting at 200m2.

Raimon Land is reported most likely to be the new partner, as it is keen on the luxury segment and is already successful in Bangkok and Chon Buri.

The new project would become the most luxurious residence in Chiang Mai and is expected to draw attention at large.

IFEC, a energy and resource company, acquired the hotel in December for Bt2.5 billion cash, of which Bt1 billion was for the hotel’s debt. The Dhara Dhevi Chiang Mai opened in 2002. It was managed by the Mandarin Oriental chain for years until the management contract expired and then it was run by its own team.

PTTEP sure of 10% cut in output cost

COST CUTTING

PTT Exploration and Production’s target of cutting its petroleum production cost by a further 10 per cent to about US$35 (Bt1,230) a barrel this year – while maintaining output – is achievable, president and chief executive officer Somporn Vongvuthipornchai said yesterday.

Thailand’s flagship upstream oil and gas company swung to a consolidated net loss of $854 million last year, as the price of Dubai crude oil averaged $50.91 per barrel, shrinking 47 per cent from 2014, while it took an additional $388-million loss from impairment of assets.

With Dubai crude trading at about $35 a barrel yesterday, Somporn told reporters PTTEP was likely to achieve the goal of slashing its unit production cost from $39 a barrel last year to around $35 this year.

It will also keep production volume close to last year’s 322,000 barrels per day of oil equivalent.

“We would have made a profit if oil prices had averaged $39 a barrel last year,” he added.

PTTEP has set out three main strategies to weather the prolonged oil price slump this year: Reset, Refocus and Renew.

The Reset strategy calls for a sustainable cost reduction, while the Refocus plan involves a shift of focus back to Thailand and other Southeast Asian markets, he explained.

The CEO said that, sitting on a cash pile of $3.2 billion, PTTEP did not rush to buy up shale oil or shale gas assets in North America when other firms had done so, because it foresaw more interesting opportunities arising closer to home.

“We have our shopping list. But we don’t want to be ‘overvalued’ in a purchase.

“This year, the timing is appropriate. Last year, there were volatilities [in oil prices],” he said.

“Big [oil] companies have started to adjust their portfolios and offer to sell [their assets], since they do not view this region [Southeast Asia] as their main focus – and that is an opportunity for PTTEP,” he added

Earlier this month, Reuters quoted banking sources as saying that US oil giant Chevron was looking to sell its gas assets in Myanmar, which are worth an estimated $1.3 billion.

PTTEP, Australia’s Woodside Petroleum, Japanese trading houses and Chinese companies were cited as among the potential buyers of Chevron’s assets, which include its 28.3-per-cent stake in the Yadana and Sein gas fields operated by France’s Total in the Andaman Sea, a stake in the Myanmar-Thailand gas pipeline, and a 99-per-cent holding in exploration Block A5 in the Rakhine basin.

Somporn said the US company’s reported offer presented an opportunity for PTTEP, which would like to increase its assets in Thailand and Myanmar from the current 70-80 per cent of its total portfolio.

However, PTTEP needed to study the details and he could not comment specifically on the matter at this stage, he added.

The Refocus strategy also calls for PTTEP to reduce its stakes in high-risk areas.

It also entails pushing ahead for on-time execution of its liquefied natural gas (LNG) project in Mozambique, as well as supporting development of government-to-government relationships to enhance investment opportunities in countries such as those in the Middle East, he told reporters.

The third strategy, Renew, involves increasing its investments in LNG business together with its parent firm PTT, and studying new businesses such as renewable energy.

The company has set up teams to study opportunities in renewable-energy businesses, such as solar power, wind power, minerals and batteries.

Somporn also said PTTEP was still undergoing negotiations to acquire a 22-per-cent stake from British Gas Asia Pacific in the Bongkot gas field in the Gulf of Thailand, where the Thai company already has a 44-per-cent holding.

PPTV wins right to live EPL matches

http://www.nationmultimedia.com/business/PPTV-wins-right-to-live-EPL-matches-30284682.html

ALTHOUGH it remains unclear whether TrueVisions or CTH will secure a sub-licence from Qatar-based BeIN Sports for live broadcasts of English Premier League matches for the next three seasons on pay TV, PPTV digital channel, owned by tycoon Prasert Prasarttong-Osoth, has secured a sub-licence deal as EPL’s free-to-air broadcaster.

“We are unable to disclose details about the total investment for this deal but we can say it is quite a large amount. We believe that this English soccer league is very valuable for PPTV as it can help us build a bigger audience base, particularly sport fans,” Kematat Paladesh, president of Bangkok Media and Broadcasting, the operator of PPTV, told The Nation.

He said winning the broadcasting rights was very satisfying and an important milestone for the station as it continues to edge forward in a very cluttered and competitive television market.

This was also the first time a Thai free-TV broadcaster had secured the EPL rights for three consecutive years.

“Our ambition is to harness the passion of Premier League fans by offering free-to-air live matches on PPTV channel. We have demonstrated over the past year PPTV’s commitment to promoting the Premier League both on air and at local PPTV events to ensure fans are ever closer to the action,” Kematat said in an official statement released yesterday.

Under this sub-licensing contract with BeIN Sports, PPTV will telecast 26 live EPL matches a year plus hold the right to stream live programmes online and conduct related on-ground marketing activities after the current deal for the 2015-16 season with CTH comes to an end in July.

BeIN Sports is currently the official broadcast licensee of the Premier League for Thailand from the 2016-17 to 2018-19 seasons. The new season will start in August.

BeIN Media Group deputy chief executive officer Yousef al-Obaidly said his company believed the foundations were there for both parties to work together in a very fruitful way in ensuring that the English Premier League will have a fantastic free-TV destination.

In another development, The One Enterprise, operator of One digital TV channel, yesterday announced it would add more top-rated dramas, “The Bachelor Thailand” reality show and new situation comedies to its line-up starting next month in order to boost its ratings, which had improved last month. One channel was ranked at No 4 with an average rating of 0.525 point last month, up from No 5 with an average rating of 0.452 point in February.

Takonkiet Viravan, CEO of The One Enterprise, said this was a result of providing new TV dramas since last year. With the new programme line-up, the company aims to achieve its goal of an average rating of 1.0 point by the end of this year. The company targets Bt1.8 billion in revenue this year, almost double last year’s.

NBTC denies AIS pressured into signing MoU with True on consumer protection

ศาสตร์เกษตรดินปุ๋ย : ขอบคุณแหล่งข้อมูล : หนังสือพิมพ์ The Nation

http://www.nationmultimedia.com/business/NBTC-denies-AIS-pressured-into-signing-MoU-with-Tr-30284679.html

THE NATIONAL Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission has dismissed reports that the government and the NBTC have pressured Advanced Info Service into signing a memorandum of understanding on consumer protection and industry promotion with True Corp.

“Nobody forced them to sign the MoU. It’s up to them to make the agreement,” Takorn Tantasith, secretary-general of the NBTC, said yesterday.

The reports raised questions about why the government had to intervene in this matter between two private operators.

Some parties are reportedly even suspicious that the MoU could lead to bid-rigging.

However, the MoU had nothing to do with the upcoming re-auctioning of a 900-megahertz licence, Takorn said. It only involved consumer protection and the industry’s growth, he said while declining to elaborate, citing confidentiality.

The NBTC will be the witness to the MoU signing expected today.

High-ranking AIS and True executives did meet with Deputy Prime Minister Wissanu Krea-Ngam, the NBTC and Information Communications and Technology Minister Uttama Savanayana last Tuesday to discuss details of the MoU, he said.

The government on April 12 invoked its special powers under Article 44 of the junta-imposed interim charter to order the NBTC to hold the 900MHz auction on May 27 and extended the switch-off of AIS’s second-generation cellular service to June 30 from April 14.

By April 12, Takorn said AIS and True would also sign the MoU to end their dispute before the new 900MHz auction.

According to an NBTC source, the MoU covers two points.

The first is about a possible agreement that will see AIS roaming its 900MHz subscribers on True’s 900MHz network before AIS ends its service on that spectrum.

The other condition is to settle the disputes stemming from True’s allowing its rivals’ mobile-phone subscribers to request phone-number transfers at 7-Eleven convenience stores. AIS believed that did not comply with the NBTC’s rules.

Takorn said the MoU did not force AIS to roam its 2G subscribers with True. Both sides are free to make any agreement, he added.

AIS also denied it was forced to sign the MoU with True.

In a statement to respond to the reports in social networks, it said that it and state authorities had discussed how it would take care of its customers before the new auction for a 900MHz licence took place.

It also had nothing to do with the MoU document circulating in social networks, it said.
