HOTELS IN major tourist destinations have established separate floors and meal rooms for Chinese tourists in order to provide specialised services and prevent complaints from other guests.

The Emerald Hotel, Chao Phraya Park, Grand Fourwings Hotel, Rama Garden, A-One Hotel inPattaya and Bangkok, Berkeley Hotel Pratunam, and some hotels in Phuket and Chiang Mai are offering separate breakfast rooms or have reserved specific floors for big groups of Chinese travelling with tour companies.

“We need to understand the culture and typical [needs] of Chinese tourists,” said Surat Kaewdee, general manager of The Emerald in Bangkok.

“I think separate rooms or floors and breakfast rooms are common at many hotels that serve big groups of Chinese tourists. This, in fact, can provide better services and also prevent possible complaints from other guests staying at the same hotel.”

A hotel-industry source said some luxury hotels such as Chatrium Hotel Riverside, Siam Kempinski, and Centara Grand at CentralWorld were accepting more groups of Chinese, offering attractive prices.

A video clip went viral last week as it shows a group of Chinese tourists fighting over prawns at a restaurant in Thailand. The clip is drawing wide attention not only in Thailand but also in China.

“The clip will remind hotels to be concerned about Chinese tourists and their typical ways,” he said.

A room-reservation staffer at A-One Hotel in Pattaya, which serves many guests from China, said the hotel began to provide separate floors and breakfast corners for Chinese guests coming with travel companies since last year. Individual Chinese guests, however, can stay and have meals wherever they like in the hotel.

Nongkhran Onkhamlueang, manager of Chiangkhong Teak Garden hotel in Chiang Rai province, said more Chinese tourists were crossing the border and staying at the hotel. The hotel has not given them separate rooms or floors as most of them are travelling with their families.

She said some travel companies taking big groups to Chiang Mai had asked hotels to provide separate breakfast rooms and specific floors for their guests for their convenience.

Surat noted that the China market has been the biggest source of international arrivals to Thailand for years. Many hotels are eyeing this huge market and adapting their strategies to cope with the growth.

KPN Music Academy planned for Singapore in strategic location

KPN MUSIC Academy, the education arm of KPN Group Corporation, will set up a music academy in Singapore this year as a strategic location to attract businesspeople in Southeast Asia who are interested in buying a music-academy licence.

The group aims to build up KPN Music Academy as a regional brand by 2020, and Singapore is regarded as an advanced market for other countries in the region to follow. Hence having a presence in that country will help make the KPN brand widely known in the region, said group chief executive officer Nuttawut Phowborom.

Once it has established itself as a regional brand and has branches throughout Southeast Asia, revenue from the Asean region should be 20-30 per cent of the total by 2020, he said.

The company recently expanded its KPN Academy franchise into Laos, as investors there wanted to bring this business into their country. Meanwhile, the company is negotiating with a private school in Indonesia on adding the KPN music programme to its curriculum. The business model in that case will be profit-sharing, he added.

He said many countries in the region lacked systematic music and voice training, so KPN saw an opportunity to build its brand, while businesspeople in those countries are also interested in KPN’s business model.

“We want to go China, but that market is not easy. Therefore, we will focus on Southeast Asia, especially Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar and Vietnam, which have similar cultures as Thailand,” he said.

In Thailand, KPN Music Academy has 60 branches, all run by franchisees. A franchisee will have costs from Bt3 million to Bt7 million, depending on the scale of the branch.

There are only two players in the music-academy business in Thailand, so marketing is not difficult. He said the company helps franchisees in terms of mass marketing via events and singing contests, while franchisees must handle local marketing themselves.

Courses at the academy cost around Bt3,000-Bt5,000 a month. Even though the economic slowdown has had an impact on purchasing power, parents continue to support their children’s ambitions to acquire musical skills, he said.

A key to the success of KPN franchises is that the franchisee has to share revenue with the teachers, which gives them incentive to stay with the academy long-term, he added.

To help the company spread its franchises throughout Thailand, Kasikornbank designed a loan programme for general investors interested in opening a KPN Academy.

Patchara Samalapa, executive vice president of KBank, said the bank had set aside Bt700 million for loans to KPN Music Academy franchisees.

If, for example, one wants to invest Bt6 million, the bank will offer a loan of Bt5.5 million and require collateral of 60 per cent of the loan amount.

AIS, TrueMove H kick off marketing campaigns for 4G services

RIVAL TELECOM companies Advanced Info Service (AIS) and TrueMove H yesterday launched marketing campaigns for their respective fourth-generation wireless broadband services, each aiming to be the leader in this market.

AIS claimed that it was the first in the world to launch “4.5G technology”, while TrueMove H announced it would offer the largest 4G bandwidth, with 55MHz on the 900, 850, 1,800 and 2,100-megahertz spectra to provide service nationwide.

AIS holds licences for the 2.1-gigahertz and 1,800MHz bands, while True group holds licences for 2.1GHz, 1,800MHz and 900MHz.

AIS said it had 5.6 million 4G users, while True has 4 million and expects that number to reach at least 6 million by the end of this year. Currently AIS has around 39 million mobile-phone subscribers, while True has 20 million.

Suphachai Chearavanont, chief executive of True Corp, said the company would invest Bt58 billion over two years for expansion of the telecom network. Currently there are around 4,000 base stations on the 900MHz network, which will cover 98 per cent of the population by May.

//

Suphachai said TrueMove H had progressed to the next level after winning auctions for licences on the 1,800MHz and, more recently, the 900MHz frequencies. This achievement was another important step in becoming the best network provider, with nationwide coverage that works well on any frequency.

Each frequency serves a different type of use. The company’s services can aggregate these frequencies to offer consumers optimal speed and quality, he claimed.

TrueMove H has also launched new 4G packages.

Yesterday AIS announced the launch of what it called the world’s first commercial 4.5G service, which pushed connection speeds beyond 1 gigabit per second. This was made possible by the Joint Development Centre (JIC), a research and development programme of AIS and Chinese telecom-equipment maker Huawei Technology.

CEO Somchai Lertsutiwong said AIS was harnessing the latest 4.5G innovations arising from the strategic joint development with Huawei.

Zhou Yuefeng, vice president for wireless at Huawei Technologies, said AIS was a significant strategic partner, with a long-term interrelationship through their cooperation on JIC.

Zhou said Huawei was pleased to work with AIS to launch 4.5G in Thailand, the first country| in the world to have this technology.

AEON MALL, the leading Japanese retail group, aims to create a strong footprint in Asia and become the No-1 retailer in Asean by investing in about 10 new shopping malls in the region, including one in Thailand, by the end of the decade.

“Under our 2020 strategy, we are planning to open five new shopping malls in Jakarta, after entering the 250-million-strong market with our first Aeon Mall in Indonesia last year. Meanwhile, the company is also adding three more branches in Ho Chi Minh City, and another in Hanoi,” Mitsugu Tamai, director and executive general manager for Aeon Mall’s Asean division, said yesterday.

The company is also studying the feasibility of business development in Thailand, Laos and Myanmar, and hopes to have its first Aeon Mall property in Thailand by 2020, he said.

Asked about the possible location and investment format for a Thai venture, Tamai suggested that an appropriate site would possibly be in the outskirts of Bangkok due to urbanisation and the growth of communities in such areas, while the project would be undertaken either though its own investment or via a joint venture.

Besides Aeon Mall BSD City in Indonesia, Aeon Mall currently operates at 24 locations in Malaysia and has one other shopping mall in Asean – in Phnom Penh – while another will soon be opened in the Cambodian capital.

In the new Phnom Penh project, Bangkok-based Major Cineplex Group is continuing its collaboration with the Japanese retailer to open another Major Cineplex operation at its second Aeon Mall in the country.

Vicha Poolvaraluk, chairman of Major Cineplex Group, said his company was investing about Bt200 million on a new theatre consisting of 10 screens, including an IMAX laser theatre, and 20 bowling lanes.

Other Thai companies – S&P, Fuji Restaurant, Jaspal and Black Canyon Coffee – are also interested in opening branches at the new mall.

Aeon Mall’s new project, which occupies an area of 100,000 square metres in Phnom Penh’s Pong Peay district, is scheduled to open in the first half of 2018.

Apart from Asean, the leading Japanese retailer is also focusing on China as a key destination for its overseas business expansion.

It currently has 11 shopping malls in the huge Chinese market.

“By 2020, we hope to have more than 10 per cent of our revenue contributed by overseas business, up from 2 to 3 per cent now.

Due to aggressive outlet expansion, the company aims to see a 120-per-cent year-on-year increase in terms of revenue from overseas markets,” Tamai said.

Aeon’s overall revenue came in at about ฅ8 trillion (Bt2.49 trillion) last year.

E-COMMERCE

CHINESE e-commerce giant Alibaba Group Holding is expected to soon surpass Wal-Mart as the world’s largest retail platform, with sales in the current fiscal year exceeding 3 trillion yuan ($463.3 billion), the company said on Monday.

Alibaba’s fiscal year started on April 1 and ends on March 31.

Wal-Mart Stores posted net sales of $478.6 billion (Bt16.7 trillion) for the fiscal year ended January 31.

The latest sales figure for Alibaba is equivalent to Sichuan’s gross domestic product last year, when the province’s GDP ranked sixth on the Chinese mainland.

Zhang Yong, the company’s CEO, said in Hangzhou city that the figure was recorded on the company’s business-to-customer platform Tmall, consumer-to-consumer platforms Taobao and Rural Taobao and group-buying site Juhuasuan.

Zhang said he expects the company will achieve annual sales of 6 trillion yuan by 2020, and that “in 2024, we want to be a business platform serving two billion consumers and tens of millions of enterprises at home and abroad”.

The company will strive to combine cloud computing and big data technologies with the Internet and the Internet of Things, as well as consumer terminal equipment, to spur its development, he said. The Internet of Things is the network of physical objects – devices, vehicles, buildings and other items – embedded with electronics, software, sensors and network connectivity that enables these objects to collect and exchange data.

Citing the National Bureau of Statistics and McKinsey & Company figures, Gao Hongbing, director of AliResearch, said that of Alibaba’s 3 trillion yuan in total trading volume, about 660 billion to 1.17 trillion yuan is newly increased consumption.

“Online shopping has been an important engine to promote consumption, which meets the nation’s strategy of promoting domestic demand,” Gao said.

Last year, Chinese consumers’ willingness to spend reached the highest level since 2012, despite the economic slowdown, according to a study published in February by Nielsen.

PTT Exploration and Production Plc has reported successful drilling results in the third exploration phase of the Hassi Bir Rekaiz project onshore in Algeria.

In the third exploration phase, the Rhourde Ez Zita-1bis (REZ-1bis) exploration well was drilled to a 4,037-metre depth.

A drill stem test was conducted with crude oil in the formations of Triassic Argilo Greseux Inferieur at the average crude oil flow of 6,152 barrels per day (bpd) and associated gas flow of 6.5 million standard cubic feet per day (mmscfd), and in formations of Ordovician (Ouargla Sandstone) with the average flow rates of crude oil at 302bpd and associated gas of 0.2mmscfd.

This well confirms the huge potential for BOG discovery.

“We are very satisfied with results of REZ-1bis. It marks a significant oil flow rate in the Hassi Bir Rekaiz project added up to the previous exploration campaigns,” Somporn Vongvuthi-|pornchai, president and CEO of PTTEP, said yesterday.

The exploration campaign in Hassi Bir Rekaiz started in 2014 and found both crude oil and associated gas in 10 exploration wells out of 11 wells totally.

The Hassi Bir Rekaiz field is located onshore in the eastern part of Algeria. It covers an area of 5,378 square metres.

PTTEP is the operator during the exploration period with a 24.5-per-cent interest.

Its joint venture partners are Sonatrach, the Algerian National Oil and Gas Company with 51-per-cent interest, and CNOOC, China’s largest producer of offshore crude oil and natural gas with 24.5-per-cent interest.

Besides Hassi Bir Rekaiz, PTTEP has another exploration and production project – Algeria 433a and 416b – which started oil production in the Bir Seba field last October with the rate of about 20,000bpd.

Jasmine International (Jas) Chief Executive Officer Pete Bodharamik assured all of the ability to pay for the licence at the Dec 21 press conference.

Jasmine International (Jas) Chief Executive Officer Pete Bodharamik assured all of the ability to pay for the licence at the Dec 21 press conference.

Jasmine International (Jas) Chief Executive Officer Pete Bodharamik informed the exchange today that the company did not pay the first instalment of the 900MHz licence yesterday because of delayed investment from the potential Chinese partner.

In a filing to the Stock Exchange of Thailand, he said that the board of directors convened a meeting today to acknowledge that the subsidiary, Jas Mobile Broadband, which won the licence in the December did not obtain the licence from the National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission yesterday.

It said that Jas Mobile could not obtain a Bt72 billion bank guarantee as a Chinese company, which is interested in investing in the subsidiary, could not obtain approval from the relevant regulator in time. Such approval is expected to be completed by mid-April 2016, Pete said, which is way past the NBTC deadline.

The name of the Chinese company has never been revealed.

He also insisted that the failure to obtain the 900MHz licence would lead to limited financial impacts, citing the legal advisor’s advice. He said that the only impact was the forfeiture of the Bt644 million bid guarantee.

“Jas Mobile (Broadband – the subsidiary) does not violate any condition as stipulated by Clause 5.2 of NBTC Notification. Thus, such forfeiture does not significantly impact the financial statements of the company,” he said.

The Stock Exchange of Thailand has halted Jasmine International share trading today, pressing for the company’s explanation on the impact. The share was suspended in the afternoon as the exchange deemed the explanation insufficient.

Jas earlier today planned to hold a press conference at 2pm. It was cancelled later.

SK’s Busan to cooperate on Phuket’s plan

DEPUTY Prime Minister Somkid Jatusripitak has invited entrepreneurs from the South Korean city of Busan to invest in Thailand, while announcing a Bt430-million budget to develop a “smart city” in Phuket.

Somkid said the Thai government had been developing a smart-city concept focusing on information-technology systems, which would become the foundation for the economy, society and tourism. Thus cooperation between Thailand and South Korea was needed to benefit from that country’s experience in a creative economy, smart cities, and management of global ports.

Thailand has been building up new industries focusing on technology and innovation, particularly a digital and creative economy, and Busan stands out in these capabilities. Busan is Asia’s largest international port city and is developing rapidly.

Somkid said special privileges would be provided for Korean investors who want to establish their businesses in Thailand’s new special economic zones, while the government would stand behind Thai investors initiating negotiations with Korean investors.

Yesterday, Somkid chaired a signing ceremony between the mayor of Busan and the governor of Phuket on an agreement for applying the development patterns of South Korea’s smart cities and digital technology for Phuket.

The City of Phuket has set a target to become a “new economy” by 2020, concentrating on environmental concerns, investment-friendliness, and tourist safety.

In one to two years, Phuket aims to have 2,000 closed-circuit TV cameras to monitor traffic so as to assess the cause of accidents and prevent them. Knowledge exchange for development of start-up operators will also be done in the city.

Information and Communications Technology Minister Uttama Savanayana said the Software Industry Promotion Agency (Sipa) was also participating in the development of Phuket with a Bt430-million budget to develop the infrastructure system for a smart city in the province.

Phuket will become part of the Internet of Things, using an IT network to switch lights in public areas on and off, connect information and distribute mobile-phone SIMs for foreign tourists to help them use services for improvement of the environment and safety.

Deputy Commerce Minister Suvit Maesincee said an incubation centre was being set up for new IT operators as a way to lower their costs. The centre will provide knowledge on legal issues, copyrights, sources of financing and joint investment with large private enterprises. The ministry decided to take this step after seeing South Korea’s experience in persuading big businesses like Samsung to help establish 17 incubators for small and large enterprises in the country.

New halal hotel aims to cash in on growing global Muslim population

HALAL HOTEL

THE Mulsap family’s TS Family Group, the owner of real-estate and restaurant businesses, invested Bt1 billion to open Thailand’s first 100-per-cent halal hotel to cash in on the booming Muslim market.

It was admitted to “The Halal Hotel” by the Gulf Halal organisation from Dubai, which assures constant and exacting standards of high quality for visitors.

The hotel aims to reach high-end Muslims and non-Muslims in Asia, the Middle East and Europe.

It targets occupancy of 70 per cent and total revenue of Bt198 million this year. It plans to break even within 10 years.

Rausak Mulsap, president and chief executive of Al Meroz Hotel, said yesterday that the Muslim population was growing quickly worldwide.

The 1.6 billion Muslims in the world make up 23 per cent of the global population. They are projected to increase to 2.2 billion by 2030, accounting for 26.4 per cent of the global population.

This group also claims a large share of the world’s consumer spending.

“There isn’t any [other] halal-friendly hotel to cater to Muslim travellers in Thailand, so we do not want to miss out on a huge opportunity in the halal tourism market,” he said.

More than 60 per cent of the hotel’s staff are Muslims, led by Sanya Saengboon, managing director and general manager of the hotel.

Sanya said the hotel held its soft opening in late November and now enjoyed 65-per-cent occupancy.

Half of the guests come from Europe and half from Asia, including high-end Muslim guests with estimated spending of Bt10,000 per day.

The hotel has allocated Bt50 million for marketing this year, aiming to promote the halal-hotel concept in both domestic and international markets.

There are no competitors in Thailand, but some offer halal services in Japan and South Korea.

“For marketing strategy, we are now working closely with the Tourism Authority of Thailand and other tourism authorities to promote Thailand as a competitive destination” for those wanting halal services.

“Our target group is Muslim and non-Muslim guests from Asia — Indonesia and Malaysia – from the Middle East and Europe – France, Germany and England,” he said.

PMTA upbeat after Baconco success

OUTLOOK

PM Thoresen Asia Holdings (PMTA) has a positive outlook for long-term growth opportunities after a new production line at its subsidiary Baconco in Vietnam has contributed to a fourfold increase in just one year in exports of specialised fertilisers to the Philippines, managing director Sigmund Stromme said.

The product is NPK (nitrogen-phosphorus-potassium) fertiliser made through the steam granulation process.

Moreover, the company plans to expand its distribution channels both domestically and overseas as well as continuing to develop new high-quality fertiliser formulas, in addition to the approximately 100 formulas already produced to serve customers’ individual needs.

Coupled with strong sales promotions, PMTA will maintain its leading market share, he added.

Meanwhile, the company’s board of directors resolved to propose to PMTA shareholders at the annual general meeting on April 25 an annual dividend payment of Bt1.12 per share.

The company reported sales revenue of Bt3.25 billion last year, an increase of 6 per cent year on year, and net profit of Bt233 million.

Stromme said several key developments were accomplished during the year driven by the increased exports to the Philippines and impressive income from the factory-area leasing business, which jumped from Bt32.1 million to Bt49.1 million, or 53 per cent.
