US-BASED IBM Watson has launched the world’s first hotel concierge robot, Connie, in Virginia after introducing its cognitive computing technology to the healthcare sector in Thailand and other countries last year.

The firm also entered an agreement with KPMG, a global provider of auditing, tax and advisory services, to provide cognitive-powered insights for capital and financial markets.

All these applications have benefited from a new era of computing and machine learning in which vast amounts of data can be leveraged instantly to facilitate the best-possible evidence-based decision-making in various fields.

In hospitality, the pilot project started on March 9 at the Hilton McLean hotel in the US state of Virginia, where the Connie robot was stationed to greet and help guests. Connie capitalises on domain knowledge from IBM Watson and WayBlazer, a cognitive travel recommendation engine, to provide guests with local tourist attractions, dining recommendations and hotel features as well as amenities.

In fact, Connie, named after Hilton’s founder Conrad Hilton, works side by side with real-life hotel staff to serve visitors better by personalising the guest experience and empowering them with more information so that they can plan their trips better.

The robot also learns to interact with guests and respond to their questions in a friendly manner – thanks to its machine-learning capability. According to IBM Watson, it uses dialogue, speech-to-text, text-to-speech and natural-language-classifier interfaces to enable it to greet guests upon arrival and to answer questions about hotel amenities, services and operating hours.

It also uses WayBlazer’s travel-domain knowledge to recommend local tourist attractions outside the hotel.

More important, the more guests interact with Connie, the more it learns and adapts to improve suggestions.

Jonathan Wilson, vice president of Hilton Worldwide, said the collaboration with IBM allowed the hotel chain to re-imagine the entire travel experience to make it smarter, easier and more enjoyable for guests.

In healthcare, Thailand’s Bumrungrad Hospital was one of the world’s first hospitals to use IBM Watson for Oncology, a cognitive computing system for cancer treatment, which also works together with real-life doctors to provide better service to patients.

Fredrik Tunvall, senior client-engagement leader at New York-based IBM Watson, said Bumrungrad, the largest private hospital facility in Southeast Asia, started to use the system about a year ago and it went live in January.

This has resulted in faster and more accurate evidence-based treatment options for Thai and foreign cancer patients as Bumrungrad is also well known internationally, according to Tunvall.

Bumrungrad, which has about 40 cancer doctors, also benefits from the expertise of New York City’s Memorial Sloan Kettering, a leading cancer centre, which helps train the cognitive computing system in partnership with IBM Watson.

In practice, Bumrungrad’s doctors feed patient profiles and existing medical evidence into the cognitive system which then works through huge amounts of data, including 23 million cancer-treatment and related documents to come up with a reliable ranking of evidenced-based options for each of the patients.

This allows doctors to make the best-possible decision for their patients, Tunvall said, adding that computing has entered the new era of machine-learning algorithms in which a system can be trained for specific areas and dataset curated for qualitative purposes.

In other words, computers with machine-learning capability help humans make faster and more accurate decisions, thus possibly extending the power of all human activities.

Besides hospitality and healthcare, IBM Watson has embarked on applying its cognitive-computing know-how in professional financial services by collaborating with KPMG to extend the human capability in the analysis of financial and operational data that are crucial to the health of organisations and capital markets around the world.

“Auditing and similar knowledge services are increasingly challenged with tackling immense volumes of unstructured data. Cognitive technology can transform how this data is understood and how critical decisions are made,” said John Kelly, senior vice president of IBM Research, adding that this will help clients gain new insights from vast amounts of information.

The collaboration also allows auditors to teach the computer how to fine-tune assessments over time, enabling auditing teams to have faster access to more precise measurements that help examine anomalies and assess whether additional steps are necessary.

MEDIA

THE BT5-BILLION out-of-home advertising business could be shaken up by the takeover by the country’s biggest player, VGI Global Media, of Master Ad, the third-largest provider of outdoor media, with expected investment of more than Bt2 billion to help it penetrate the upcountry market.

VGI Global Media’s revenue is targeted to be pushed up by 50 per cent to Bt3.1 billion in the fiscal year beginning in April with the consolidation of revenue from Master Ad.

“Nowadays, consumers spend more time outside their homes for commuting, shopping and dining. This trend can be seen both in Bangkok and the provinces. But more than 70 per cent of total out-of-home advertising spending is still pouring into Greater Bangkok, while the remaining 30 per cent goes upcountry,” Kavin Kanjanapas, executive chairman, said yesterday.

There is plenty of room to grow upcountry, where 84 per cent of the population resides, because of urbanisation and the full effect from the Asean Economic Community.

The country’s regions have also enjoyed faster economic growth per capita than Bangkok, he said.

Suparanan Tanviruch, chief financial officer, said the board of directors approved the acquisition of Master Ad’s shares and a tender offer for all of Master Ad’s securities for an expected Bt2.04 billion.

VGI holds 24.96 per cent of Master Ad. It wants to increase its holding to 37.42 per cent in May for Bt412.4 million.

“After having 37.42 per cent of Master Ad, which surpasses the 25-per-cent threshold, the company is required to launch a tender offer for the rest of the shares with an estimated Bt1.63 billion investment by the end of this year.

“The source of funds will be operating cash flow or credit facilities supported by financial institutions,” she said.

“Master Ad will be our spearhead for the company to expand its network upcountry,” chief executive officer Marut Arthakaivalvatee said.

Under Master Ad’s management are 178 mega-billboards, 215 networking billboards and 556 pieces of street furniture both in Bangkok and the provinces.

Kavin said that besides the outdoor-media business, VGI was also focusing on other out-of-home formats such as airports, digital media and on-ground activities.

“We are in talks with potential partners to expand further into those new areas. We expect to strike two or three deals this year,” he said.

VGI Global Media holds 20 per cent of Aero Media, which manages advertising and media services at 13 airports across the country that welcome more than 115 million travellers annually.

This media arm also manages advertisement via 342 LCD (liquid-crystal display) screens, 6,200 trolleys and 57 aerobridges.

To cash in on the digital transformation of the media business, the company will offer media and marketing services via its 5 million Rabbit card members in line with co-promotions with its 90 merchant partners.

For on-ground activities, the company will engage its customer base of 2 million active Rabbit card members and 16 million monthly e-mail-based customers.

Also in the out-of-home industry, Bangkok Metro Network, a subsidiary of Bangkok Expressway and Metro, aims to see growth of 12-15 per cent from Bt460 billion last year, fuelled by its advertising business in subway stations and expressways, retail rental space service and telecommunications service in subway stations.

The company hopes to list on the Stock Exchange of Thailand in two years.

Hotels need tech but also human touch

ศาสตร์เกษตรดินปุ๋ย : ขอบคุณแหล่งข้อมูล : หนังสือพิมพ์ The Nation

HOSPITALITY

HOTELS have an urgent need to leverage cutting-edge technology to personalise the customer experience, but always in balance with the traditional human touch, professional-services firm Grant Thornton reported after the “International Hotel Investment Forum” in Berlin last week.

While high-profile disruptor Airbnb expects to break the US$1-billion (Bt35 billion) profit mark this year, firms that fail to act on personalisation enabled through technology risk being cut adrift, and growth could suffer as a result.

Key pressures facing hotels today include the growth of shared-accommodation providers, increasing influence of online travel agents in the booking process and rapidly evolving needs and expectations of guests.

Mastering big data and harnessing its potential to provide the personalisation that guests will expect and demand are fundamental to addressing these challenges.

Despite this, just 10 per cent of tourism companies globally plan to increase research spending this year.

“Technology is a major driver in our hotel industry today. In particular, the Internet of Things and big data help us to accurately understand and predict guests’ behaviour,” Tom Sorensen, partner and hospitality and tourism leader of Grant Thornton in Thailand, said yesterday.

“Too many hoteliers are yet to fully embrace big data. Without analytics technology and sufficiently trained staff to make sense of the noise, they can’t plot how to enrich guest experiences from pre-arrival to post-departure.

“At the same time, the new tools that allow for more targeted services risk diverting attention from the very skill on which the hotel industry was built – human interaction.

“With disruptors threatening the very fabric of the sector, these are crucial months and years ahead for hotel brands. Greater investment in technology and in training staff must be a priority if they are to keep pace.”

Examples of hotel brands already making innovative use of data to personalise the experiences their guests receive include Starwood Hotels, where guests can bypass check-in and unlock their rooms with their smartphones.

And the Bratislava Sheraton uses guests’ social-media “likes” to present tailored gifts upon check-in.

There are seven areas where hotels can deploy technological and human innovations to improve the customer experience. They include understanding that the guest journey begins long before they arrive in reception, and using ad-content algorithms to show customised offers to customers based on searches.

At the hotel, technology can be developed to let customers check in, control their room temperature and even customise the room layout.

And once guests leave, recording individual preferences can ensure a smoother and more enjoyable repeat experience.

“Technology is reshaping the world we live in, and the hotel industry is not – and should not – be immune to that,” Sorensen said.

“But hotel brands must ensure that if they invest in better data-management technology, they can measure its impact on guest satisfaction.

Or, that they are getting the balance right between data harvesting and respecting customer privacy. To do this, hiring new staff or retaining existing employees with the right skills will be critical.

“The most innovative hotels are already responding to these challenges. Those brands that are slowest to react to the demand for greater innovation will increasingly find themselves cut adrift.”

GMM Grammy chairman Paiboon Damrongchaitham (right) and chief marketing officer Phawit Chitrakorn yesterday announced a new milestone for the country's largest music and entertainment company via its transformation into a business with full digital capab

GMM Grammy chairman Paiboon Damrongchaitham (right) and chief marketing officer Phawit Chitrakorn yesterday announced a new milestone for the country’s largest music and entertainment company via its transformation into a business with full digital capab

GMM GRAMMY has hired a former head of Ogilvy and Mather Advertising’s Thai operations to help lay a new cornerstone for digitalising the 33-year-old music and entertainment powerhouse into the country’s leading digital content and marketing provider.

“To get a full transition to the digital era, we need to have the number one in the industry. Phawit Chitrakorn is the top choice for my company to create business sustainability amid rapid change in the media landscape,” chairman Paiboon Damrongchaitham said yesterday.

Phawit, a former managing director of Ogilvy and Mather Advertising Thailand with more than two decades of experience in communication business with multinational and local brands, has been appointed chief marketing officer for the group to connect and manage demand both from ad agencies and advertisers to utilise GMM Grammy’s media across all platforms, he said.

Phawit is taking care of GMM Grammy’s total media solution unit, which works with clients to co-create branded content and distribution through its various media platforms, ranging from TV channels, radio stations and on-ground activities to digital platforms and its social network, Paiboon added.

“Apart from advertising spending, GMM Grammy is now putting more focus on offering more value creation, such as branded entertainment, influencer marketing and tailor-made campaigns,” Phawit said.

Under this new strategy, the company is launching an influencer hub to provide marketing service for brands and advertisers that are interested in using the company’s famous artists and singers either as brand presenters or endorsers through various communication channels such as show business, TV shows, radio programmes and social networking to engage with target customers.

In the first phase, at least 300 out of a total 500 artists and singers will be involved in the influencer hub, Phawit said.

“We aim to have at least 10 per cent of the Bt1-billion influencer-marketing business by the end of this year, translating to about Bt100 million,” he added.

In line with this new service, the company will also provide marketing solutions related to creating branded entertainment content, which will help its clients to place their products seamlessly into music content, as well as into other formats of entertainment content, he explained.

“From my experience, brands and advertisers are generally only pouring roughly 15 per cent of their total advertising expenditure into branded content production. After this introduction, we hope to see an increase in this segment,” the chief marketing officer said.

Paiboon said this new direction was aimed at improving performance in GMM Grammy’s core businesses of music, two terrestrial-based digital-TV channels and film production.

For this year, music and television business operations are expected to be the key revenue drivers for the group.

An analyst at Capital Nomura Securities forecast that GMM Grammy would achieve 2-per-cent revenue growth this year, generating Bt8.8 billion.

Thai hotels first to launch ‘N Room’ concept for AccorHotels’ Novotel chain

http://www.nationmultimedia.com/business/Thai-hotels-first-to-launch-N-Room-concept-for-Acc-30281763.html

ACCORHOTELS PLANS to transform the rooms at its worldwide Novotel chain to a new concept called the “N Room”, starting with its hotels in Thailand this year.

The Novotel Bangkok Ploenchit Sukhumvit is the first trial property for the N Room concept, which offers what the company describes as “a universal ideal of more customisable design to better address local hotel and guest needs”.

The new room features an iconic bed, wider window design, a 40-inch TV, adjustable sofa, flexible use of space, new amenity layout, and more device ports.

As Novotel is a recognised brand for business and leisure travellers, accounting for 55 per cent and 45 per cent of its business respectively, guests staying in the new type of room will able to both work and rest in the same space.

Patrick Basset, chief operating officer for Upper Southeast and Northeast Asia, said Thailand was the first country to have the new-concept room, designed by a Thai architecture firm – Soda.

The initiative room will be implemented at Novotels in other countries all over the world.

Novotel is the most popular brand in AccorHotels’ portfolio in Asia-Pacific, while Thailand is one of the most dynamic markets in the region, offering more room for growth in the long term, he said.

“This year, we will open new Novotels with the new room, while some existing properties will get renovations [under the N Room concept], including our first |local Novotel at Siam Square,” he added.

The transformation cost for each new-concept room is Bt750,000. However, once the renovation work is complete, the company can increase the room rate by 15-20 per cent, thus increasing its overall average room rate, Basset explained.

The group expects that this year’s business in Thailand will grow by 9 per cent from last year’s impressive level, which was achieved despite the bomb blast at the Erawan Shrine in August.

The group operates 450 Novotel hotels and resorts in 61 countries around the world.

More than a quarter of the properties are in the Asia-Pacific region, including 16 hotels comprising 4,313 rooms in Thailand.

The chief operating officer said 42 hotels and resorts were currently in the pipeline for Asia-Pacific between now and 2019, including four hotels comprising a total of 908 rooms in Thailand. The Thai properties are: the 240-room Novotel Bangkok Sukhumvit 20, due to open in May; the 180-room Novotel Phuket Phokeethra, scheduled to open in the third quarter; the 303-room Novotel Sriracha Marina Bay, due to open next year; and the 185-room Novotel Bangkok Nana, which is due to start operations in 2018.

Other AccorHotel brands in the pipeline for Thailand through 2019 total 17 hotels, with 4,044 rooms in total. They include eight Ibis Styles hotels, two MGallery by Sofitel properties, and a Sofitel, a Mercure and an Ibis.

Aside from Thailand, Basset said the group was now also expanding in the emerging market of Myanmar, where it already has three properties.

Six hotels with a total of 1,393 rooms are in the pipeline: the 160-room Ibis Styles Yangon Stadium, due to open this year; the 356-room Pullman Mandalay Mingalar and the 100-room MGallery Inle Lake Myat Min, both scheduled to open next year; the 200-room Ibis Styles Muse and the 268-room ibis Styles Mandalay Centre, both due to open in 2018; and the 300-room Pullman Yangon Myat Min, due to start operations in 2019.

Jas Mobile Broadband still faces fee deadline after AIS wins 2G injunction

ศาสตร์เกษตรดินปุ๋ย : ขอบคุณแหล่งข้อมูล : หนังสือพิมพ์ The Nation

http://www.nationmultimedia.com/business/Jas-Mobile-Broadband-still-faces-fee-deadline-afte-30281762.html

THE CENTRAL Administration Court’s temporary injunction against cutting off Advanced Info Service’s 2G service has no impact on the Monday deadline for Jas Mobile Broadband (JASMBB) to pay its first instalment of the upfront licence fee, the regulator said yesterday.

Takorn Tantasith, secretary-general of the National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission, said the court order did not mean the commission had to postpone the deadline.

Once JASMBB pays the instalment, the NBTC telecom committee will consider appealing against the court’s ruling on Tuesday, which extends the remedy period for AIS’s second-generation cellular service on the 900-megahertz spectrum by 30 days to April 14.

The two companies that last year won licences to use the 900MHz spectrum have to pay the first instalment of the upfront licence fee and place bank guarantees for the remaining fees to the NBTC by Monday.

Jas has yet to pay the first instalment, while TrueMove H Universal Communication (TUC) paid the first instalment and later received its licence on Monday. Takorn said JASMBB had reportedly clinched funding from foreign financial sources to fulfil this payment condition.

Takorn said the court ruling had no impact on TUC’s licence.

True Corp said in a statement that it welcomed the court ruling to protect these 900MHz customers for 30 days. It will also speed up the process to finish covering Thailand nationwide with its 2G network using the 900MHz and 1,800MHz spectra by April 14, ahead of the original May schedule. Both the NBTC and its telecom committee acknowledged the court injunction.

AIS had petitioned the court to order the telecom committee to extend its remedy period. On Monday, the authority ordered AIS to shut the service at midnight Tuesday. This was in line with its rule that AIS has to switch off the 900MHz service once it grants the 900MHz licence to either of the two licence winners. The order prompted AIS to seek an injunction.

As a result of the court ruling, AIS’s 2G-900MHz customers will have more time to port their mobile phone number to another network.

The court cited the NBTC’s rule on the remedy period – that the regulator has to inform AIS 30 days in advance of the end of the remedy period. The telecom committee informed AIS on Monday that AIS had to switch off the service on midnight of Tuesday.

During the inquiry by the court on its injunction on Tuesday, AIS informed the court that it had 800,000 2G customers on its own network, of whom 400,000 were active. It also has 7.6 million 2G customers on the network of its subsidiary Advanced Wireless Network.

AIS planned to roam these 7.6 million customers on the 1,800MHz network of Total Access Communication (DTAC) if it had to shut down its service on Tuesday.

There are also 200,000 TOT 3G subscribers roaming on AIS’s 900MHz network for voice service.

AIS had used the 900MHz band to provide service until its concession ended last September.

This lot of the band was assigned to Jas after the auction of two lots of 900MHz licences last December.

According to the NBTC, AIS is entitled to use only 7.5MHz of its lot during the remedy period, of which 6.9MHz is being used.

LINE@ marketing tools to facilitate SMEs doing business online

LINE@ SMES

LINE THAILAND yesterday officially launched LINE@, providing digital marketing tools to help small and medium-sized enterprises efficiently do business online.

Launching LINE@ is part of Line’s 2016 vision to go beyond chat, and is the first in a series of new service offerings this year.

Ariya Banomyong, managing director of Line Thailand, said that after having tested LINE@ in February last year, the new service was now available with full features to solve the “pain points” of SMEs’ online business and to help simply the digitisation of SMEs.

Out of a total of around 2.8 million SMEs in the country, only about 500,000 are online, while 2 million are small office and home office (SOHO) users and 42 per cent are retailers.

Meanwhile, there are 33 million LINE users in the Kingdom, who are all potentially accessible via LINE@, he said.LINE@ is designed to provide marketing tools for SMEs with an easy-to-use concept at an affordable price, the MD said.

LINE@ services will be charged from April 1 via a pricing plan of Basic, Pro and Pro+ packages.

The Basic package will cost Bt998 per month, with unlimited followers and 50,000 broadcast messages, and unlimited timeline posts.

The Pro package will cost Bt1,998 per month with a maximum of 50,000 followers, while the Pro+ package is Bt6,888 a month with up to 300,000 followers.

Both the Pro and Pro+ packages cover unlimited broadcast messages and timeline posts.

“We are offering a promotion for three months at Bt998 per month with unlimited usage, including the number of followers, broadcast messages and timeline posts,” he said.

During last year’s trial period of LINE@ in Thailand, in February and early March, there were 429,520 LINE@ accounts, he said. The company is not, however, disclosing its targets for the LINE@ service.

The beauty of LINE@, Ariya said, is that it offers powerful features, including Broadcast, for the instant broadcasting of messages, or coupons, to a LINE@ account’s followers; Coupon, to easily create coupons and promotions, for PC usage only; Rich Message, which shows a full-screen image embedding up to six links, helping to increase traffic to a website; a Poll & Survey feature; 1-on-1 chat, to easily chat with customers via LINE@; Auto Reply and Timeline; as well as LINE@ Premium ID.

“Normally, a LINE@ account will come with a random ID, but if users want to have their own name for their LINE@ account, they can use LINE Premium ID for Bt200 per 11 months,” he added. Moreover, it is not only SMEs that can benefit from using LINE@.

The Pullman Grand Sukhumvit Hotel – a 325-room, four-restaurant property – used LINE@ as a marketing communication channel to get exposure to the mass market shortly after an eight-month renovation, said Philippe Le Bourhis, general manager of the hotel.

SCG Logistics plans regional expansion

LOGISTICS

SCG Group’s logistics arm will focus more on expanding its network in Asean to realise Bt5 billion in revenue from these areas in five years.

“Businesses are not limited to only the domestic market and tend to go abroad. So we need to serve them,” Syamrath Suthanukul, managing director of SCG Logistics Management Co, a wholly owned subsidiary of the country’s largest building-materials firm, said yesterday.

The company will emphasise providing international logistics services as its strategic plan this year. This could push the company’s Bt600 million in overseas revenue to Bt5 billion by 2020.

Incorporated a decade ago, the logistics company has launched services via joint ventures in such countries as Myanmar, Cambodia and China, in Nanning.

It is now forming more ventures in Laos, Indonesia and Vietnam. It expects to complete them by the end of this year and see revenues from them next year.

SCG Logistics Management posted about Bt15 billion in revenue last year and expects to grow by 18 per cent to Bt17.8 billion this year.

“Amid the gloomy economy, we have set the most challenging target for this year’s revenue … But sales from Asean are bright,” Syamrath said.

The company’s revenue came from three types of customers – organic, which was expected to grow by 14 per cent from sales to SCG’s firms, non-SCG shipments, which were estimated to rise by 30 per cent, and Asean countries.

“This year, we have set the growth target for Asean sales at 77 per cent to Bt1.1 billion,” he said.

However, most of the company’s sales – 85 per cent – were still to other SCG firms. The remaining sales were 11 per cent to non-SCG customers and 4 per cent to Asean.

“We will pursue expansion abroad in the same way as we have done in the domestic market, by mostly shipping to SCG customers and then expanding to shipping to non-SCG customers,” he said.

The company has also invested more than Bt400 million in information technology to develop a cutting-edge logistics system, focusing on integrated management solutions to serve the demands of customers in Thailand and abroad.

The IT improvement should help SCG Logistics deliver the group’s cement, chemicals, and building materials and energy-related products without empty back-hauls.

The company’s driving school could also help manage its non-asset network of 7,500 trucks nationwide owned by 200 other companies as well as bringing them to get jobs abroad.

“We will focus on improving cross-border transport networks, especially in the Greater MekongSubregion, focusing on three border crossings – Aranyaprathet, Mae Sot and Mukdahan,” Syamrath said.

Apple ‘s i Beacon on trial at Central World

RETAIL

CENTRAL Pattana Plc, Thailand’s leading retail developer, early this month started trialling Apple’s iBeacon wireless technology at its Central World shopping plaza to allow its tenants to shoot promotional campaigns directly at shoppers.

Nattakit Tangpoonsinthana, executive vice president of marketing, said yesterday that while urbanisation has driven the retail industry in recent years with the growth of shopping malls in the provinces, the new retail landscape is being reshaped by the Millennials and Generation Z shoppers.

Millennials are people aged about 21-30 and Gen Z are 15-20. Although these two groups represent only 10-20 per cent of shoppers, they are leading the voices in social media and influencing purchases and consumption.

“Retailers must give importance to these new-generation shoppers, who will be the game-changers of the retail industry and general businesses within five years,” he said.

To fulfil the needs of these shoppers, CPN, which is aiming to become a leader in the regional retail industry, is creating a seamless experience, focusing on customisation and becoming a social enterprise.

iBeacon enables tenants to send tailored messages to shoppers who have loaded the CentralWorldapp on their smartphones.

CPN is also talking with a software company to mine Big Data from its The 1Card customer relationship management programme, which holds mountains of data on 8 million-9 million members.

The Millenniums and Gen Z shoppers have already shaken up the fashion world, which has launched more frequent new collections and “limited editions”.

To address the tastes of these groups who get bored fast, CPN will have to create more “wows” and “happenings”, launch concept stores and speed up store renovations from every eight to nine years in the past to every four to five years now.

CPN has increased its digital marketing budget to 10 per cent of its Bt700 million marketing budget from just 3 per cent in the past.

Marketing staff have to have digital literacy. Store managers must know not only on how to run their physical branches but also how to engage and converse with their shoppers online.

BEC banking on sports programmes to help ratings this year

http://www.nationmultimedia.com/business/BEC-banking-on-sports-programmes-to-help-ratings-t-30281675.html

ENTERTAINMENT

Bangkok Entertainment Company (BEC) has high hopes of sports programmes shoring up TV ratings and advertising revenue on top of top-rated dramas this year after the news-show category experienced a slowdown due to intense competition and the impact from the departure of famous TV host Sorrayuth Suthassanachinda.

“Live sports programmes will be one of the key drivers boosting ratings for Channel 3 and its affiliate networks this year,” Surin Krittiyaphongphun, executive vice president of BEC, said yesterday.

BEC plans to air big sports competitions such as the Uefa (Union of European Football Associations) championship from France between June 10 and July 10, the FIVB Volleyball World Grand Prix Final in July, and the Summer Olympic Games from Rio de Janeiro from August 5-21.

These live programmes will be telecast via Channel 3 HD and Channel 3SD, except the Olympic Games, which Channel 3 will co-broadcast with other key members of the Thai TV Pool.

Meanwhile, the company has also acquired the broadcasting rights to the 2016 MotoGP World Championship for the second consecutive year. This world-class motorcycle-racing event will be broadcast on Channel 3SD (digital TV channel No 28) from this month until November.

Surin acknowledged that the TV broadcasting industry was likely to see intense competition while advertising expenditure seems to be slowing down.

According to Nielsen (Thailand), advertising spending in the first two months of this year posted a 6.73-per-cent drop to Bt16.5 billion from Bt17.69 billion in the same period last year. Both analog and digital terrestrial TV channels were hurt, with year-on-year declines of 12.83 and 9.07 per cent respectively.

After the conviction of Sorrayuth in the Rai Som scandal, Channel 3 took a bit of a hit from cancellations by some advertisers on three news programmes that used to be hosted by Sorrayuth, Surin said. However, he said the news department was adjusting some strategies to make sure that those news shows were able to maintain their ratings.

Apart from its flagship station, BEC World is putting more focus on two digital TV channels, Channel 3SD and 3 Family, by adding more content to both. It says half of total airtime will be for fresh content.

Through this strategy, the company targets revenue growth of at least 3-5 per cent this year.
