LAZADA expects to increase transactions on its e-commerce platform by more than 10 per cent to Bt11 billion by going nationwide.

Chief executive Alessandro Piscini said yesterday that Thailand was a high-opportunity and high-potential e-commerce market with consumers changing their behaviour and lifestyle to shopping online.

The penetration rate of fourth-generation mobile technology is increasing, the retail landscape upcountry is still fragmented, small and medium-sized enterprises are marching towards the online channel and brand investment is moving from traditional into digital.

The company’s direction this year is to expand beyond Bangkok and recruit sellers upcountry and in big provinces such as Chiang Mai and Khon Kaen to appeal to customers nationwide.

It will introduce two services next quarter – helloPay, an easy-to-use online payment platform that provides consumers with a secure way of shopping online, and various shipping options so that customers will receive ordered items faster.

Same-day delivery will be available in Bangkok and next day upcountry.

About 70 per cent of customers use cash on delivery and the rest other payment channels such as automated teller machines as well as counter services.

“The new e-payment helloPay will be an alternative for customers to shop via our online website and our mobile application,” Piscini said.

Auto and sports items are popular on http://www.lazada.co.th, which sees about 50 million visitors per month.

Some 20 million access the e-marketplace via desktop personal computers and 30 million via mobile devices.

It has more than 10,000 sellers.

Last November, 6 million mobile users have download its mobile app. The company will next month conduct a big campaign to celebrate its fourth anniversary in Thailand.

It now has about 1,000 staff here.

To get more sellers upcountry, a team runs conferences, training sessions and workshops on how to succeed in e-commerce.

Merchants can learn how to market their online store and how to increase engagement and build relationships with their customers.

Lazada offers brands and merchants a marketplace solution with simple and direct access to about 550 million consumers in six countries – Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam.

TO SURVIVE in a sunset business like print media, Amarin Printing and Publishing will offer readers the choice of only top-ranked titles.

“All of our magazines must be No 1 in their category to make sure that both readers and advertisers still stay with us,” Rarin Utakapan Punjarungroj, chief executive officer, said yesterday.

The leading publisher is focusing more on content development and distribution across platforms, particularly online and on-ground activities.

The company is developing content from its top-ranked magazines to be up and ready for audiences across media platforms, ranging from conventional formats, on-ground events and television programmes to digital media outlets like websites and Facebook pages.

“We already have a strong readership base from our top-rated magazines.

Other platforms will help us engage with more untapped audiences and pave the way for advertisers to communicate with them,” he said.

Amarin hopes to see revenue from digital expansion multiply fivefold to more than Bt100 million this year.

The most popular magazines – Lamonade, Room, Baan Lae Suan, Health and Cuisine, and My Room – have been selected to offer special content or related activities such as e-commerce.

Although advertising in magazines was continuing to decline, the company still believes that printed publications play a key role among local readers. To keep them interested, Amarin will further penetrate new frontiers like digital media and free-TV broadcasting and bring brands to meet target audiences.

Amarin TV, a high-definition digital terrestrial TV channel, continues to improve its viewership rating. It ranks 13th out of the 25 digital TV stations. By year-end, it hopes to advance into the top 10.

“We continue to develop our key content such as news, variety and home-related shows. This year, another highlight will be lifestyle TV programmes,” Rarin said.

The company is aiming for 10-per-cent growth in revenue this year by expanding digital media, selling pocketbooks and organising on-ground activities and fairs.

RESTAURANT

The Barbecue Plaza, operator of three restaurant chains, Bar B Q Plaza, JumSaap Hut and Hot-Star, yesterday announced a major revamp that will include a name change to “Food Passion”.

The reorganisation will allow each chain under Food Passion’s umbrella to be managed and expanded independently. Food Passion itself will support each brand with basic requirements such as manpower, budgets, investment, infrastructure, and other tools so that they can all operate smoothly and successfully.

The revamp is part of the company’s strategy to increase its annual revenue by 100 per cent to more than Bt6 billion in 2018.

The Barbecue Plaza Co was established in 1987. The company posted Bt3 billion in revenue last year, up 11 per cent over 2014.

Food Passion will this year invest more than Bt700 million in the expansion of its restaurants. About Bt200 million of the investment budget |will be allocated to the opening of |20 new Bar B Q Plaza restaurants |this year both in Bangkok and upcountry.

Meanwhile, for Hot-Star, the company has prepared a Bt10-million budget for the opening of five to 10 new outlets in different formats, either kiosks or small snack cafes with some seats.

All JumSaap Hut restaurants will enter a revamping programme in the third quarter.

Food Passion currently operates 111 Bar B Q Plaza outlets, five Hot-Stars, and 27 JumSaap Huts.

Chataya Supanpong, chief engagement officer of Food Passion Co, said that under the reorganisation, the parent company would play an important role as a central unit to set up business synergy among the three brands and fully support each chain’s efforts to hit their targets with maximum capacity.

She said the reorganisation was initiated as a major step towards the |company’s broader goals. It is designed to facilitate aggressive business |strategies for future expansion and to help all three brands thrive and reach their fullest potentials.

“Food Passion will be our new corporate name, which reflects the company’s belief, our unique business operations and strong passion to [satisfy] all stakeholders, not only customers, but also employees, business partners and society,” she said.

“This reorganisation, together with the corporate name change from The Barbecue Plaza Company Limited to Food Passion Company Limited, will support the workings of each brand.”

She added that there were also |new executive appointments for |each brand. Boonyanuch Boon-bumrungsub, the company’s executive vice president, will oversee Bar B Q Plaza and JumSaap Hut, while Chanin Choopojcharoen, also an executive vice president, will be in charge of Hot-Star.

“We plan to launch a new food brand this year to enhance future growth … We believe each brand will grow strongly under the new structure,” she said.

Thai TV unfazed by first setback in court in battle with NBTC

DIGITAL TV

Thai TV Co still has high hopes of winning its fight with the broadcasting regulator even though at the first hearing on the case, the Central Administrative Court did not issue a temporary injunction against the seizure of the company’s bank guarantee after the revocation of its two digital-TV licences.

“We believe that we can win this long battle with the National Broadcasting and Telecommunic-ations Commission, which failed to marshal the transition from analog to digital TV in line with the national master plan. Our company was a victim of this failure,” said media veteran Pantipa “Sister Tim” Sakulchai, president of Thai TV Co.

Pantipa told the press after her legal team gave testimony yesterday at the hearing that her company would neither allow the NBTC to claim its bank guarantee nor pay fees and fines demanded by the commission.

However, NBTC member Supinya Klangnarong said Thai TV Co violated regulations by ending its public service without the permission of the commission, which was affecting the public interest.

In addition, if Thai TV wants to exit the current licence-based regime, it must comply with the law by paying the remaining five instalments of its upfront licence fees by March 13 after receiving an official notice of revocation of its licences from the NBTC, she said.

“I told the judges that granting a temporarily injunction could cause a domino effect on law enforcement both in the telecommunications and the broadcasting sector. Also, such a decision might have an impact on the collection of [state revenue] from previous auctions of radio frequencies as well as upcoming ones.”

The company had petitioned the court to issue a temporary injunction last week to protest against the NBTC’s administrative order of the revocation of two digital TV licences for Thai TV news station and Loca family channel, which was later renamed MVTV Family.

The notice also demanded full payment of the remaining five instalments of the upfront licence fees worth Bt1.63 billion plus value-added tax as well as the unpaid annual licence fees and a daily fine of Bt60,000 by March 13. But if Thai TV failed to respond, the bank guarantor, Bangkok Bank, should assume this responsibility.

CP unit partners with US company for supply chain sustainability

SUPPLY CHAIN

The Feed Ingredients Trading Business Group, a subsidiary of Charoen Pokphand Group, has formed a collaboration with US company AG Processing Inc (AGP), the world’s largest soybean-processing cooperative, for development of a sustainable supply chain for soybean meal.

Somchai Kungsamutr, chief executive of the Feed Ingredients Trading Business Group, said the partnership aimed to reinforce a sustainable and traceable sourcing policy throughout its supply chain and to promote environmental and social responsibility.

“In line with Charoen Pokphand Food’s sustainable-sourcing policy and supplier-guiding principles launched at the end of 2014, the company constantly communicates with the critical or core suppliers of main raw materials such as fishmeal and maize, mostly local suppliers who are core business partners. We realise that a supply-chain traceability system is an effective tool to minimise social and environmental impacts,” Somchai said.

According to the three-year memorandum of understanding, both parties are committed to develop jointly an acceptable process whereby soybean meal can be traced back through the supply chain, from processing plants back to the soybean-growing areas.

They will develop acceptable standard measures and regulatory guidelines on labour and human-rights concerns that will apply to the entire supply chain and are compliant with the laws of the countries where both parties conduct their business.

In addition, they will develop a mutually acceptable system to issue documents certifying that none of the products sold to CP Group originate from deforested areas. Meanwhile, they will encourage farmers to increase productivity, reduce costs and implement environmentally responsible cultivation practices as well as comply with all relevant international standards.

Thailand is the first country in Asean with which AGP has formed a partnership. AGP is a leading agribusiness with primary operations as a major US soybean processor/refiner producing and marketing soybean meal, refined soybean oil, and biodiesel.

AGP is owned by 175 local and regional cooperatives comprising more than 250,000 farmer-producers across 13 US states.

Somchai said his company would expand its traceability system to the supply chains of other raw materials besides soybean meal.

On January 1, the company officially launched a corn traceability system, under which all suppliers of corn to CP now must register legal deeds and other documents through an online platform before any business transaction.

In 2014, the company launched a “Self-Sufficient Farmers and Sustainable Corn” pilot project in Pak Chong, Nakhon Ratchasima. Somchai said the project was successful, with a 60-per-cent increase in yields, 29-per-cent drop in production costs, and 40-per-cent decrease in carbon footprint.

The company is collaborating with the Agricultural Land Reform Office to expand the planting areas from the current 38,500 rai (6,160 hectares). It expects to bring in at least 15,480 additional small-scale farmers for a total production area of 225,000 rai by 2019.

Siam Piwat CEO Chadatip Chutrakul, left, and Oki Sato, chief designer and founder of Nendo, jointly announce the new look of Siam Discovery – The Exploratorium under a new revolutionary retail concept, aiming to attract more than 100,000 visitors a day af

Siam Piwat is preparing to transform its renovated Siam Discovery mall into the country’s first lifestyle-concept shopping complex, offering more than 5,000 international and local brands with community space to engage more than 100,000 potential visitors a day.

The 18-year-old mall in central Bangkok has been closed for a Bt4-billion overhaul since May and expects to reopen under the new title “Siam Discovery – The Exploratorium” next quarter.

“We want to create a unique shopping experience for all customers. To make the new Siam Discovery different from its neighbouring shopping malls Siam Center and Siam Paragon, we want to introduce a revolutionary new retail concept in Thailand,” said Chadatip Chutrakul, chief executive officer of Siam Piwat, which also owns and operates Siam Paragon and Siam Center.

To turn this shopping venue into a hybrid retail destination, Siam Piwat decided to ensure that its 40,000 square metres of retail space would offer a range of products and undertake sales and marketing strategies that would be more flexible and respond to customers’ demands.

Previously, Siam Discovery hosted at least 120 retail tenants.

After the reopening, there will be hundreds of categories and more than 5,000 international and local brands on offer.

“We invited [Japanese design studio] Nendo to provide the inspirational design concept for Siam Discovery because Siam Piwat looks at the future from a global perspective rather than just the potential of the Thai market,” Chadatip said.

To turn this vision into reality, the Siam Discovery renovation was overseen by Oki Sato, one of the world’s top designers.

“Our role as a retailer has advanced to another level and become one of managing visitors’ experiences and emotions at the destination, rather than just one of managing products, categories and displays,” Chadatip stressed.

Besides being Nendo’s largest project in Thailand, this is the first major facelift of the 18-year old shopping complex. The aim is to cash in on the potential growth in shopping and retail markets in Thailand following the implementation of the Asean Economic Community (AEC) early this year.

Chadatip said the 2 million square metres comprising the Siam area was considered one of top-ranked retail destinations in Bangkok, which annually attracts more than 200,000 visitors. The number of foreign-tourist arrivals is expected to rise, particularly after the full implementation of the AEC.

Give this potential, one year after the reopening, Siam Discovery is expected to welcome 100,000 visitors a day, of whom about 65 per cent will be local shoppers while the remaining 30-35 per cent will be foreign tourists.

“We aim to double our sales revenue within one year compared the sales in the year before this major renovation,” she said.

Siam Piwat targets recovering the cost of this renovation within five to six year as it believes that this is a long-term investment. By the end of this year, the company hopes to see at least 10-per-cent revenue growth, partly driven by the new Siam Discovery.

DONG NAI – The southern province of Dong Nai has topped the country in attracting foreign direct investment in the first two months of 2016, said the provincial Industrial Zones Authority (DIZA).

The province, which borders Ho Chi Minh City to the north and is home to several industrial parks, lured US$463 million worth of foreign direct investment, accounting for 46 per cent of its 2016 target and a rise of 3.4 per cent compared to the same period last year.

For the January-February period, 14 new projects were licensed with registered capital of $169 million, while 17 projects currently operating were allowed to increase capital by $299 million.

Taiwan (China) lead among countries and territories investing in the locality in the reviewed period, with four projects worth $125 million.

The new investment projects are diversified in many trading areas and meet with the locality’s investment attraction orientation, which includes five projects for suppliers for the mechanical and apparel industries.

According to the DIZA, one of the main reasons for the increasing FDI inflow is investors are taking the initiative to prepare for expected opportunities from free trade agreements, particularly the Trans-Pacific-Partnership (TPP) Agreement.

Many of the world’s largest companies from the Republic of Korea, Japan and China have invested in the province, including Fujitsu, Formosa, VPIC, Hyonsung, Changshin, and Taekwang. Thailand’s Amata also owns a large-sized industrial estate in the province.

The KL budget hotel market is saturated as more and more businesses are seeking licences to convert their shop lots into budget hotels./The Star

Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) will no longer issue hotel licences in the federal capital until further notice.

The ruling applies to all types of hotels ranging from the 6-star establishments to budget hotels.

However, hotels that have already received planning permission but have yet to start construction will not be affected.

Kuala Lumpur mayor Datuk Seri Mohd Amin Nordin Abdul Aziz told StarMetro the matter had been discussed at the Economic Planning Unit (EPU) of the Prime Minister’s Department recently.

//

Too many hotel projects have saturated the market, with many more in the process of being constructed or about to be built.

Currently, there are 939 hotels in the city including more than 400 budget hotels.

“There is an oversupply of hotel and office spaces in Kuala Lumpur now and we have been advised by the Government to be strict on this, so we will not be giving any more DOs (development order) for hotels until further notice.

“So no more approvals for hotels for now,” he said.

“From here on out, we will advise the developers to look at other forms of development when they submit new applications,” he added.

Amin Nordin said only two planning approvals were issued in the past six months – one of it was for the stalled The Grand Duta Hyatt hotel project at the junction of Jalan Sultan Ismail and Jalan Ampang, and another project also located in Jalan Ampang.

As for budget hotels, he said only five were approved in the past six months and there would be a cap on it soon.

The mayor elaborated that two DBKL buildings in Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman, where the development order was received for a hotel, had been put on hold.

“Since the market is already saturated, we are not going to build a hotel there.

“Instead, we will use both buildings for our own internal use,” he said.

Based on data compiled by DBKL, the number of hotel rooms in Kuala Lumpur has exceeded a staggering 56,000.

This includes hotels, service apartments, budget hotels and backpacker hostels.

The mayor said the current number of rooms was adequate to cater to the expected 12 million international tourists expected in the city this year.

“We anticipate a surge in tourist arrival after March, especially from China,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Malaysian Association of Hotel (MAH) Kuala Lumpur chapter chairman Shirley Lai, said the freeze on hotel licence by DBKL was timely as it would give time for the market to improve.

“The hotel market is pretty saturated at the moment and with more hotels opening this year, the demand for rooms is going to drop even further. In fact, there has been a drop in occupancy since last year,” Lai said.

“In Kuala Lumpur alone, there are over 50,000 rooms. Multiply that by 365 days, that is 18.2 million rooms for a year.

“With more hotels coming up this year, that will be an additional 1,000 to 1,500 rooms,” she said.

“If things do not improve, this will eventually trigger a price war as hotels will start slashing prices to deal with stiff competition.

“We cannot afford to reduce prices. Operating costs are increasing, salaries need to be paid and with factors such as the weakening currency, this is not healthy at all.

“People say that we offer the cheapest room rate in the South-East Asian region, but it means nothing if we are not seeing an increase in the number of hotel guests,” she said.

The move, however, has not gone down well with the Malaysian Budget Hotels Association (MyBHA).

MyBHA is unhappy with the Government’s decision to control the number of licences for budget hotels, saying that it is bad for entrepreneurship.

“That should not be the way to regulate the industry.

“As long as a person fulfils all the requirements needed to obtain a licence to operate a budget hotel, they should be allowed to carry out the business,” MyBHA president Leong Pui Kun said.

“They should encourage entrepreneurship, competition and innovation in the market instead of saying there are too many budget hotels in this city,” Leong said.

“This kind of regulation is not good for the economy.

“If people cannot make money one way, they should be allowed to do other things as long as they comply with the rules,” he said.

DBKL Licence and Petty Traders Management Department director Ibrahim Yusof said regulation was necessary as illegal budget hotels were popping up like mushrooms overnight.

“This is not just happening in the heart of Kuala Lumpur, but also in the outskirts where businesses which are not doing well apply for licences to convert their shoplots into budget hotels,” he said.

“The trend now is that businesses which are not getting the rental they want are converting their shoplots into budget hotels because the cost is minimal and maintenance is low.

“It is the easy way out for them,” Ibrahim said, adding that even service apartments and condominiums were doing it.

Ibrahim said that of the 939 hotels in Kuala Lumpur, more than 400 were budget hotels, yet only half of that number were legal.
