4G

Samart Engineering is cashing in on the roll-outs of nationwide 4G networks by manufacturing parts for telecom equipment in base stations.

“We [foresaw] more investment from mobile-phone operators on 4G technology after the auction of 1,800MHz and 900MHz spectrum licences late last year. So we shifted to making more enclosures and main distribution boards,” said Thawee Udomkitchote, managing director of the subsidiary of Samart Corp.

The company expects to reach Bt600 million in revenue this year, with half coming from the enclosures and main distribution boards. Last year, the company’s Bt590 million in revenue came mostly from digital TV set-top boxes and antennas, while enclosures and main distribution boards contributed only Bt100 million.

The company had planned to tap the growth of digital TV set-top boxes and antennas but shifted focus after finding that the National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commis-sion had failed to attract more people to redeem their discount vouchers for digital TV receivers.

The NBTC distributed Bt690 vouchers to 14.1 million households nationwide but only 9 million coupons were used to buy equipment. The company has also produced enclosures and metal sheets for other businesses including automated meter reading of the Metropolitan Electricity Authority.

The company also has eyed new business opportunities in the metal-sheet production business inAsean Economic Community countries. Advanced Info Service plans to spend Bt40 billion this year mainly to establish its fourth-generation cellular network and to enhance its 3G network.

Total Access Communication (DTAC) is committed to spending Bt70 billion on network investment and marketing campaigns for its 4G battle from this year to 2018.

Toto yet to expand output in the Kingdom

TOTO GROUP’S localisation policy will mean its Thai subsidiary is unlikely to pursue a factory expansion here before 2020, even though it is running its plant at a full capacity, partly because the Japanese sanitary-ware company is already investing significantly to expand its Vietnamese production.

Hiroyuki Suzuki, president of Toto (Thailand), said the Thai unit aimed to increase the proportion of domestic sales from less than 20 per cent of the total to 30 per cent by 2020.

Although currently running its sanitary-ware plant at full capacity, the company has no plan to increase its production capacity but will instead reducing its exports to make way for more local sales.

“It is Toto’s policy to have local production to serve the local market. Even when we meet the 30-per-cent [local sales] target, we will still not have to expand production capacity,” he said.

At present, Toto (Thailand) makes 60 per cent of its sales revenue from its exports to Japan, 15 per cent from the United States, and about 5 per cent from Europe.

Thanks to a Bt2-billion investment made prior to its takeover of the local operations from Siam Cement Group in October 2013, Toto has a sanitary-ware production capacity of 540,000 pieces per year.

“We have to see how the US and Japanese markets grow. And Toto Vietnam is constructing a new factory. Toto group has to consider Asia in the overall picture,” he said.

According to official documents on the Toto.com website, the Japanese company is building its third factory in Vietnam with a total investment of 9.7 billion yen (Bt3 billion). When completed in March 2018, the Hung Yen plant will have a capacity to produce 600,000 pieces of sanitary ware per year. The new Vietnamese market will also serve “other rapidly growing Asian countries”, according to Toto.

At present, Indonesia is Toto’s largest production base in Asia outside Japan, followed by Vietnam, whose capacity is already three times Thailand’s, Suzuki said.

He said Vietnam’s production costs were similar to Thailand’s but its wage costs were currently about half of the Kingdom’s. Nevertheless, Vietnam’s labour costs are rising by 20 per cent per year, and sanitary-ware shipments to the US from Vietnam will be subject to an import tax, while Thai products are not being taxed.

“Our sales in Vietnam are very good and thus we have to open the new factory,” he said, adding that Toto is now the No 1 player in Vietnam’s sanitary-ware market.

Suzuki said Toto’s separation from SCG was successful, since it is already making a profit and running its plant at full capacity. The company believes it has about 8 per cent of the medium-to-upper-end segment of the Thai sanitary-ware market, which accounts for about 30 per cent of the total market here.

Suzuki said Toto would seriously penetrate the Thai market this year and would launch a new product in April. It will also invest Bt20 million to renovate its Bangkok showroom to have a corner to display its state-of-the-art technologies.

“This year we will penetrate the market seriously, with a focus on enhancing our products’ appeal and to intensify our branding efforts. We’ve found some Thais who still think Toto is a bed sheet,” he said.

Toto aims to boost its sales in Thailand by 30 per cent this year, after growing by about 20-30 per cent in 2015.

“The parent company has high expectations for the Asian market. The top three markets that it has given the highest priorities are Thailand, Vietnam and India. That’s why we have to set a high target here,” he said.

Suzuki said that since an increasing number of Thais had been travelling to Japan every year, Toto believed many of them might have a chance to experience Toto products such as its signature washlets that are equipped with electronic toilet seats, and would love to use these products here too.

Toto recently won trust from |three high-end residential projects |- Saladaeng One, The Residence@Mandarin Oriental Bangkok, and NUSA Sriracha – to use its sanitary ware and other bathroom products in their projects.

TrueVisions sees Thai soccer striking new heights

ENTERTAINMENT

In the LIGHT of increasing popularity of local soccer leagues, the value of the broadcasting rights of those competitions is evidently following suit. TrueVisions Group, which recently spent Bt4.2 billion to acquire media rights to three Thai football leagues, aims to take those sports to higher levels in terms of market value and exposure.

“The value of the audio-video broadcasting rights of Toyota Thai Premier League, Chang FA Cup and Toyota League Cup has jumped drastically, from Bt200 million per season five years ago to Bt1.05 billion last year. This showed that this content had a vital role and impact in the sports and entertainment businesses,” said Birathon Kasemsri na Ayudhaya, head of commercial and business development at TrueVisions.

Owned and managed by the Football Association of Thailand, these media rights have been measured and accredited by David Gerald Richards, chairman of UK-based management consultancy Kynsman Ltd and former chairman of the FA Premier League, to make sure that the actual value of the broadcasting rights is in accordance with the standards of the English Premier League.

Although the value of these rights continues to rise, Birathon stressed that it was crucial to the Thai soccer industry itself, as the more money it can earn from broadcasting rights, the more capacity it has to improve talent as well as develop supporting facilities, equipment and training programmes.

He believes that the diversification of media outlets under TrueVisions Group will add more value to this broadcasting right in the future.

“Data speak for themselves,” he added.

In 2014, the Toyota Premier League gleaned ratings of around 1.8-1.9 points at the most. Last year, during live telecasts, the soccer league hit its highest point at 3.

“We expect to see more growth in terms of TV ratings in the near future because TrueVisions Group is now able to provide this sport content both via pay-TV channels by TrueVisions and free-to-air TV stations like True4U and TNN 24.”

TrueVisions also expects higher viewership for this local sports content. The new “Sanan Ball Thai” package, which was recently launched, is an example of how it plans to accomplish this.

“I want to see the penetration rate of Toyota Thai Premier League viewers grow to at least 50 per cent of [the country’s] 22.3 million households by 2020,” Birathon said.

According to a NIDA Poll, the penetration rate of Toyota Premier League viewers increased significantly to 29.13 per cent of households last year, from 26.72 per cent in 2013.

BARCELONA – Samsung Electronics Co Ltd and LG Electronics Inc unveiled their latest smartphones at the Mobile World Congress industry show in Barcelona on Sunday, seeking to buck the slowdown in industry growth.

Phone makers face another tough year in 2016 as subdued global growth and persisting currency weakness in key emerging markets sap consumers’ spending power. A push by Chinese manufacturers to expand overseas amid slowing growth in their domestic market may also undercut margins further.

In a bid to recapture market share, Samsung launched two new versions of its Galaxy S smartphone and brought in Facebook Inc Chief Executive Mark Zuckerberg for a surprise appearance to tout the potential of virtual reality, prompting hundreds of people to rush to the stage to record the moment.

LG, which lost money from its mobile business last year asits flagship products struggled, introduced a modular design to its new G5 smartphones that allows users to replace or upgrade functions such as camera and audio independently.

It also launched a virtual reality headset and accessories including a drone controller to pair with the G5.

Analysts and investors cheered LG’s features, which they said were different enough to possibly revive sales, but were lukewarm about Samsung’s offerings, saying they only featured incremental upgrades.

“I think it’s possible for LG’s mobile business to recover on its new product launch, since they delivered significant changes with the G5,” said Seoul-based HDC Asset Management fund manager Park Jung-hoon.

“The Galaxy S7, however, doesn’t seem to be creating as much buzz,” Park said.

Samsung shares were down 1.3 percent as of 0212 GMT, underperforming a 0.2 percent fall for the broader market, while LG shares were up 3 percent.

Revamps could prove key to smartphone makers as 2016 shapes up to be another tough year: researcher Trend Force expects the smartphone market growth to slow to 8.1 percent from 10.3percent a year earlier.

Margin pressures are also expected to intensify for the industry as Chinese manufacturers seek to expand overseas to counter slowing domestic demand.

Samsung on Saturday said its mobile payments service, Samsung Pay, will launch in China in March, a month after Apple launched its Apple Pay service in the world’s biggest smartphone market.

The company fell out of the top five in the world’s top smartphone market last year but hopes that its easy-to-use payments service will help it regain sales momentum.

“The challenge you have got in the smartphone market isbreaking through all that sameness. From a design and functionality perspective, everything looks and feels the same,” said Bob O’Donnell, president of Technalysis Research.

Chevron (Thailand) Ltd, marketer of the Caltex brand, plans to sustainably grow its retail business.

The company aims to expand its Caltex-brand service stations with a focus on quality locations such as strategic highways and key provinces nationwide.

The company will also continue to expand its cooperation with retail partners to enhance offerings and services for motorists. At the same time, it will work to reinforce brand awareness and broaden its reach with the younger customer base.

Country chairman and general manager for products, Salman Saadat, said the company is committed to enhancing its presence in Thailand by working with current retailers and new investors to add new Caltex branded service stations in Bangkok and other provinces to cater to demand and growth of the market.

In 2015, Chevron opened 23 new Caltex fuel service stations. This year, the company said it would continue its effort to expand Caltex service stations from nearly 370 existing sites, focusing on key locations such as strategic highways and key provinces to better serve the motorists and transportation sectors. It is also working on enhancing its service-station experience to make it more enjoyable so that motorists can look forward to visiting a Caltex site.

Refurbished forecourts are brighter and more attractive, with canopy lights providing drivers with a safer welcome at night. So far, nearly 200 Caltex fuel service station networks have been reimaged. “The focus for 2016 is to provide motorists with a one-stop exceptional experience each time they visit our stations.

“We aim to cater to the demand of motorists with a wider range of services such as convenience stores, food courts, coffee shops and eateries, car washes, auto fast fit, ATM, etc. Moreover, the company plans to further expand its cooperation with retail partners such as D’Oro Cafe, Family Mart, Black Canyon, etc., not only to provide additional revenue source for our service station partners but also enhance Caltex’s appeal to the public. We will also work on developing new partnerships to create more valued and impressive experience for the motorists when visiting Caltex stations. We target two to three new popular branded retail partners to come on board by the end of 2016,” said Saadat.

Chevron Thailand Ltd is also tapping technology to reach out to a new generation of motorists.

He added that the company will tap “digital marketing” strategy through social network and online media in order to broaden our reach to cover new younger customer base.

Its “Caltex Thailand Facebook” has attracted more than 360,000 fan-page likes and its activities continue to gain overwhelming positive feedback from the visitors.

“We are proud that Caltex is ranked No 1 in the fuel service station category in “Thailand’s Most Social Power Brand 2015″ survey conducted by BrandAge Magazine,” he said.

MORE employees are likely to explore new career avenues that could lead to a better job, more money and a better life, presenting a huge opportunity for job recruitment firms, says Seek Asia.

MORE employees are likely to explore new career avenues that could lead to a better job, more money and a better life, presenting a huge opportunity for job recruitment firms, says Seek Asia.

“We are witnessing a potential growth in passive candidates, which refers to those who are still being employed but keep their eyes open for new opportunity,” said Jake Andrew, chief product officer of Seek Asia – the parent company of leading online employment marketplaces JobsDB.com and JobStreet.com.

This emerging trend was found in a job candidate survey Seek Asia conducted in November. In the survey, which was based on people who changed jobs, 58 per cent were active candidates and 42 per cent were passive candidates.

The study found that passive candidates are now more tuned into market conditions and are looking for opportunities.

For companies to tap his market, Andrew said that JobsDB would soon introduce new services – job alert relevance, advanced talent searches and company reviews – to increase the chances of attracting a candidate through a job. JobsDB launched the services in key markets including Singapore and Malaysia last year.

On top of this new service, Seek Asia is putting more emphasis on engagement via its JobsDB mobile application. The company said that the platform dominated Internet access in the Kingdom in line with the increasing penetration of smartphone users. The number of smartphone users is expected to hit 24.8 million in the next three years.

“To date, 60 per cent of the total members [in the market] are active via the JobsDB mobile application,” said Noppawan Chulakanista, managing director of JobsDB Recruitment (Thailand).

Andrew said that figure was five to 10 per cent four years ago when Seek Asia acquired its stake in JobsDB.

To encourage passive candidates to find new jobs, Seek Asia is also investing more in public relations and marketing campaigns. This is line with it expanding its markets, particularly in key cities outside Bangkok.

Seek Asia chief marketing officer Geraldine Wong said that the company had increased its marketing budget for Thailand by 30 per cent in the first four months of this financial year.

“Digital ad campaigns and roadshows in key provinces are a key strategy this year,” Wong said, adding that employees should keep their resumes up to date in preparation for new opportunities.

CONSTRUCTION

Ch Karnchang has high hopes for a strong year thanks to additional construction work commissioned for the Xayaburi hydroelectric power plant project in Laos, a huge backlog, and profit recognition after the restructuring of its subsidiaries.

The Mekong River Commission and the Laotian government have requested that Xayaburi make additional investment in environmental aspects, including a fish passageway, a navigation log, earthquake-resistant structures and a sedimentation system.

The Laotian government was considering amending the concession with Xayaburi to provide additional incentives, such as tax or fee incentives and an extended concession period, to compensate for the higher costs and enable Xayaburi to continue to achieve the pre-set return-on-investment goal.

Details of the incentives are under consideration.Executive chairman Plew Trivisvavet said yesterday that the additional investment would bring more work and revenue to the company.

Xayaburi has commissioned Ch Karnchang for the extra construction work as an extension of the main contract because it is confident in the contractor’s ability to complete it by the 2019 deadline, the company says.

Ch Karnchang expects its total backlog of more than Bt90 billion will generate Bt30 billion a year of revenue on average until 2018.

The company also expects more revenue from new projects, such as the extensions of the Blue, Orange and Pink mass-transit lines, railway double-tracking and motorways.

It estimates a profit margin of 8-10 per cent. Ch Karnchang now holds about 30 per cent of Bangkok Expressway and Metro Co, 20 per cent of TTW Co and 30 per cent of CK Power. All these subsidiaries have shown strong performance and profitability, it says. The company will start recognising profit from them and is also counting on good contributions from other subsidiaries this year.

Old tyres can be useful

Once they are worn out, what benefits can tyres bring?

T Siam Commercial, the distributor of Nitto tyres, says they can be turned something useful for children. Recently, its executives and more than 100 employees brought some tyres to Nong Yao School in Phetchaburi. Together, they developed a playground for the children and donated sport equipment and educational materials worth more than Bt200,000 to the school.

Apichai Tanwongsiri, managing director of the company, said the “T Siam Brings Smiles to Youngsters” project had entered its fourth year.

“We picked this school because of its long distance from the city area and obsolete education materials. We believed that if these children were happy, they could bring about good results in learning and their lives. Their laughter showed us how they liked our project,” he said.

Paper-based scholarships

SCHOLARSHIPS

Last year, students in 10 schools in Bangkok and nearby provinces donated about 2,000 kilograms of used paper to a recycling project.

To SCG Paper, which was behind the “Rak Loke, Rak Recycle with Idea Paper” (Love World, Love Recycling) project, that means a chance for underprivileged students to further their studies, while instilling recycling awareness among students in Bangkok.

The project started with stations at the 10 schools. All the used paper given by students and their parents was registered. The weight and value of the paper were translated into scholarships, with an extra donation of Bt200,000 from SCG Paper. The company then turned the paper into eco-fibre, which could be used in paper production. This helped reduce the cutting of trees. Last year, the 2,000kg of used paper saved 100 trees.

Students at the 10 schools were also encouraged to join an essay contest under the “recycling family” theme and 70 students were shortlisted for a trip to Samut Prakan. At a park, they studied the ecosystem, joined tree planting, and painted. They collected garbage that could be exchanged for fishmeal.

“I liked the natural art camp the most. It demanded creativity. Items we thought useless like dried leaves could be turned into beautiful art pieces,” said Tangmo, a Prathom 6 student from Ratchaburi. “As I returned home, I encouraged my friends and my family to do more on waste segregation.”

Khachon Somwong, another Prathom 6 student, said paper-waste segregation was a priority in his family. “I learned a lot from this camp. My favourite is the ecosystem camp” that highlights the co-existence idea.

Big C, agricultural co-op federation join forces to help longan farmers

BIG C Supercenter is teaming up with the Agricultural Cooperative Federation of Thailand to launch the first campaign by a retailer to support the government’s Pracha Rath (Civil State) policy to improve the livelihoods of farmers nationwide.

Big C and the ACFT signed a memorandum of understanding under Pracha Rath’s framework to improve the livelihoods of Thai farmers and local communities sustainably. The two sides agreed to work closely to assist distraught farmers, promote demand-based agriculture and enhance the efficiency and availability of direct linkage among farmers, cooperatives and retailers.

The two sides kicked off their joint campaign by assisting distressed longan farmers in San Pa Tong district, Chiang Mai, who were left stuck with 100,000 kilograms of the fruit after their foreign clients cancelled the order because of the economic downturn and export problems.

Kudatara Nagaviroj, executive adviser for corporate affairs at Big C, said: “Big C is ready and eager to work with the ACFT, which represents more than 4,000 cooperatives nationwide, to offer market access, distribution channels, logistical and marketing support, knowledge transfer and growing plans in order to promote farmers’ and cooperatives’ direct entrance into our retail network.

“Our first task now is to help farmers in Chiang Mai who were stuck with 100,000kg of longan after their international orders were cancelled. Many farmers have been forced out of business by this problem. After the AFCT raised this [issue], Big C offered our sales channels as well as support on packaging and labelling, logistics, distribution, and marketing to help alleviate the problem.

“These longans are of high quality – AA and A grades – are unpeeled, contain various health benefits |and are very popular among |Chinese consumers. At this stage, we will distribute 30,000kg of dried longan through all Big C store formats nationwide. We are also focusing |our efforts on tourist-frequented stores such as (those in) Rajdamri, Ratchda-pisek, Pattaya, Phuket and Hat Yai, where we expect large sales volumes.

“This is our first campaign under the government’s Pracha Rath framework, and we will continue our efforts to work with civil society, government and the private sector to promote farmers’ well-being.

“In 2016, Big C aims to purchase a total of 100,000 tonnes of fresh produce from Thai farmers – a 20-per-cent increase from [last] year. Big C will also arrange farmers’ markets in 180 Big C Supercenter, Big C Extra, Big C Jumbo and Big C Market stores nationwide to generate income and offer sourcing opportunities for farmers,” Kudatara said.
