Longines brings some of its most precious timepieces to Bangkok as it celebrates 185 years of business

MARKING 185 years of successful watchmaking, Swiss watch brand, Longines is bringing the celebrations of this occasion to Bangkok with an exhibition that runs until Tuesday at Eden 2 Square on the second floor of CentralWorld.

Swatch Group Trading (Thailand), which represents Longines here, is showcasing 29 timepieces from the Longines Museum allowing Thai watch enthusiasts to admire their timeless beauty.

Established in 1832 in Saint-lmier, Switzerland by Auguste Agassiz, the brand started out as a counter offering made-to-order watches. Back then, watches were manufactured at home by local craftsmen, who brought them to Agassiz for finishing and sale. In 1867, his nephew Ernest Francillon took over the business and built the very first factory, bringing together under one roof all the stages of the manufacture of watch movements. To set up his project, he bought a piece of land known as “Es Longines”, the local dialect for “Long Meadows”, which later became the brand’s name.

Many masterpieces were created here, reflecting the glorious past of Longines and some of those rare pieces from the Longines Museum are now in show in Bangkok. From 1832 to the 1930’s, Longines produced a majority of pocket watches. The brand focused at the beginning on robust timepieces, before producing extra-thin pieces, sometimes decorated like true jewels. On display are an 1892 pocket watch with picturesque decoration and another with a floral ornament in gold plate and niello produced in 1915. A third, in gold with a beautiful 24-hour dial, was made in 1917.

Throughout its history Longines has produced beautiful ladies wristwatches as the three models displayed here attest. Whether in gold or set with diamonds, the two watches in the exhibition, made in 1917 and 1959 respectively, are timeless, their elegance based on simplicity and perfection.

At the end of 1956, just after the collection’s name was registered, the first Flagship models were designed. The collection featured an image stamped or engraved on the case back and paid homage to the name of the collection, Flagship, after the vessel upon which the flag of the fleet’s commanding officer ripples in the wind.

With adventurers exploring the four corners of the globe in the first half of the 20th century, the watchmaker developed a number of watches to help pilots calculate their position and trajectory and a series of devices for air and sea navigation.

The exhibition displays a marine chronometer in a wood box dated 1918, mounted on gimbals and used on board ocean-going ships to determine the longitude.

In terms of wrist-chronographs, since its first pocket-chronograph from 1878, Longines has been intrinsically linked to the world of sport with several models dedicated either to professional timekeepers or amateur athletes. Visitors can admire a timepiece fitted with the first Longines movement for a wrist-chronograph, calibre 13.33Z (1930) and another wrist-chronograph fitted with the Longines calibre 12.68Zstop (1946).

In 1939, Longines launched calibres designed especially for timing sports events. These movements, such as the calibre 260, included the latest technological features of the day and made it easier to read off the times achieved and also met the stringent demands of high-level competitions in many different disciplines.

In addition to mechanic watches, this exhibition also displays quartz watches, which transformed the timepiece industry back in the 1970s. One of the highlights was an electronic quartz movement, the 800 calibre, for on-board chrono-meters, developed in 1965. This time-measuring device opened the way to new heights of accuracy.

Later in 1969, Longines launched the first cybernetic quartz calibre for a wristwatch, the L6512, named Ultra-Quartz. Longines’ dedication to research and development led to many new innovations, while maintaining its quality and classic sophistication, appealing to discerning clients who look for both functionality and tastefulness.

Cle de Peau Beaute introduces “Nuit de Chine”, describing it as the new chapter in the 2017 Holiday Collection.

A love story told in opulent colours, it is inspired by “China Through the Looking Glass”, an exhibition at New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art.

Cle de Peau Beaute’s creative makeup director Lucia Pieroni began exploring stories of forbidden passion, set over nights in the Orient. Her research led her to Washington State-based artist, Kathe Fraga and their collaboration incorporates the faded hues and motifs characteristic of Chinoiserie.

Influenced by her time in the US, South America and Europe, Fraga creates paintings that evoke the hand-painted, time-worn walls and murals of grand chateaux. Chinoiseries with a modern twist, her works resemble aged decorative panels and are adorned with birds, flowers and vines. Her art is collected and shown around the world.

The collection features the Essential Radiance set (Bt4,500) for every woman’s skincare routine, five Eye Colour pencils (Bt2,800) with a metallic shine, limited edition Nail Lacquer (Bt2,300) in three provocative hues and a Makeup Coffret (Bt5,800 with a compact, four jewel-like shadows, deep blush duo and a lipstick in iconic red.

The new Burberry campaign, which debuts in store and online today, celebrates the British character and charm of the brand’s new collection.

British actors Cara Delevingne and Matt Smith appear in a portfolio of images captured for Burberry by British photographer Alasdair McLellan. The images are accompanied by a 30-second video with a soundtrack of “Always On My Mind” by Pet Shop Boys.

Delevingne first started working with Burberry in 2010 but for Smith, it’s a first.

“I am so proud to share this new shoot with Alasdair McLellan and Matt Smith. Thank you to the creative genius and my dear friend Christopher Bailey for involving me in this and all the incredible projects over the years. It has been and always will be a joy to work with you and the Burberry family,” Delevingne said

“Burberry has always been a brand that I have admired – from the football stands to the macs on the runway. The chance to work with Christopher, who with his design and vision, has contributed so much to a brilliant British brand and indeed left a footprint not only on fashion but British culture itself, is a huge privilege. Working with both Alasdair and Cara, two fashion and creative heavyweights, was also very appealing, and made partnering for this campaign an easy choice for me,” Smith added.

The collection is available online and in stores from today. The coats and trenches have classic outerwear shapes and are reinterpreted with a twist. Laminated trenches are available in vibrant colours with unexpected details, while reversible car coats are lined with tartan. The signature made-in-England gabardine trench coats are available in classic colours for children too. And the Giant, a supersized reversible unisex tote, comes with tartan and checks inside and out in primary shades, finished with flashes of neon. This season, The DK88 is updated in colourful combinations, from high-shine metallic to carefree splashes of paint, and in new mini and micro sizes. The Patchwork is refreshed in an eclectic mix of fabric and palettes. While the new Doodle tote is crafted from printed canvas and leather trim, featuring playful scribble designs dreamt up in the Burberry design studio, that celebrate free-spirited art and British weather.

Knitwear pieces feature British fabrics, techniques and references – from Fair Isles to slip stitches and British lambswool to cashmere. These can be mixed and clashed in bold, colourful and distinctive combinations. The Burberry Bandana offers a new scarf shape and with a supersized silhouette for versatile styling, it shines in block colour and Vintage check cashmere. Gloves, beanies and socks are also available, which can be artfully mismatched to create unique combinations.

The accessories selection includes a variety of fun creatures and wallets in playful and paint-splashed prints. New Burberry Clan charms are available in a cast of animal key charms, uniquely crafted from offcuts found in the Burberry design studio.

Introduced on the September runway, the jewellery collection is inspired by British garden flowers, ornate chandeliers and vintage pieces, and crafted in Arezzo, a small Italian town renowned for its creation of fine jewellery.

Louis Vuitton takes French “art de vivre” to Japan for its new Cruise collection, appropriating inspiration from the Miho Museum’s marriage of extreme modernity with natural surroundings.

Architect IM Pei conceived the building to represent Shangri-La, the mythical heaven on earth thought to be found in a secret Himalayan valley. The fusion of urban and natural that pervades Japan has served Louis Vuitton as a starting point for this collection.

The 2018 cruise collection alternates between the present day and a noble ancestral civilization, between futurism and poetry and between huge, vibrant cities and delicate landscapes.

The garments recall samurai, figurative engraving, inked landscapes, ceremonial dress, the keikogi of martial arts, the Kurosawa cinematic dramaturgy, and the unique melancholy of Kitano. Urban pantsuits and architectural tunics are designed in the spirit of Hokusai. Interwoven jersey and leather sweaters recall the armor of Japanese warriors. Evening dresses gleam with Noh theater gold. Delicately crafted obi belts become the fabric of tapered trousers. Handbags and clutches are decorated with Kabuki masks.

This year’s cruise collection also pays tribute to designer Kansai Yamamoto, who paved the way for an entire generation of Japanese designers by presenting his work in France. Yamamoto is well known for having designed most of David Bowie’s costumes and has now put his talent to creating icons, symbols, and characters for Louis Vuitton bags and accessories. The caps are the work of designer Kristopher Haigh, founder of the 1K brand.

Actresses Rila Fukushima and Doona Bae opened and closed the fashion show.

“I visited the Miho Museum a few years ago and was fascinated by IM Pei’s concept of the harmony between architecture and nature. Japan is a country I know well. It was one of the first places I travelled to when I was seeking inspiration, some twenty years ago, and I’ve been a regular visitor ever since. This collection is the culmination of what Japan has given to me for a very longtime,” designer Nicolas Ghesquiere told the press.

H&M’s latest collaboration, Erdem x H&M is full of narratives, memories and stories.

A deeply personal collection that looks back to the designer’s youth and to the codes that have defined his work over the past decade, it is inspired by the romantic dresses he saw in English films, his father’s coat that his mother draped over her shoulders as well as the cool style of ’90’s TV and music videos. To create the latest collection, he imagined the dream English countryside getaway, mixing gowns with tailoring and functionality with drama.

Each piece is designed exclusively for H&M, and is now available in 220 stores worldwide, as well as online at http://www.HM.com.

Erdem’s fans cherish his designs forever, and the Erdem x H&M collection is overflowing with special pieces that will become like heirlooms. A sleeveless ball gown with a snowdrop jacquard print falls voluminously to the floor, with its plunging neckline held by double grosgrain ribbon straps. A high-necked and long-sleeved black lace dress has extravagant georgette pleated ruffles at its cuffs and hem, while an embellished evening gown is entirely covered with black sequins and embroidered florals. A black jacquard skirt with a wildflower print has extraordinary volume with the back of the skirt cut longer to create the effect of a train.

Florals dominate dresses, from a sleeveless black pleated dress, a new take on a dress from his first ever collection, to a sleeveless dress with cutaways at the waist in a multi-colour jacquard, like a wildflower meadow. The same jacquard is used for a fitted, colourful, feminine coat.

Some of the floral prints are charmingly formal, like the snowdrop print on the black silk satin pyjama top and trousers, or a black long-sleeve dress with panels of guipure lace, which run diagonally down the body. Other florals look like a hand-picked bouquet, like the floral jacquard of a black tailored jacket with matching cropped trousers, the same floral pattern is vividly embroidered on the black 100-per-cent organic cotton hoodie.

The precision of tailoring adds a neat twist to the Erdem x H&M look. A fitted herringbone grey wool melange blazer is perfect for a walk in an English park, paired with matching feminine flared trousers. An oversized dark navy wool double-breasted coat comes with a turquoise windowpane check, the coat is cut on the bias in panels over the shoulders, and at the cuffs and hem. A faux leopard coat has a deep pile, patch pockets and a grosgrain ribbon tie at the neck, while a little wool boucle jacket and the matching skirt has raw edges and transparent strips in the weave to brilliantly catch the light.

Slip on trainers are vivid in floral jacquard, a biker boot with a Goodyear welted sole is printed with snowdrops, and an ankle-strap kitten heel has jewelled flowers decorating the toe. A croc-print frame handbag is inspired by uncovered photos of Erdem’s mother in the 60’s, and is decorated with jewels, with both a formal handle and a shoulder strap for a more informal look, while a structured baguette with a fine leather strap is perfect for the evening. Earrings are shaped like bows and are made from crystals and pearls, which also appear on ribbon brooches and hairclips. There are also floral tights, socks, and floral scarves to complete the look.

Check out the collection at H&M Siam Paragon, CentralWorld and The EmQuartier.

Makeup artist Yuta Sato of the brand Three hits the beaches

BORN TO A family of artists, Yuta Sato came to prefer a woman’s face as his canvasThe celebrated makeup artist for Japanese cosmetics brand Three was in Bangkok recently for the launch of its Refined Control Lip Pencil and Epic Mini Dash.

The latter’s lovely pink, red, and orange evoke the dawning sun, and perhaps Wat Arun – the Temple of the Dawn – and the sunsets that illuminate Thailand’s world-famous beaches.

Sato said he adores Thai women’s gorgeous skin tones and bone structure – and he’s been here a lot, more than 30 times in the past 10 years. All they need, he said, it the right makeup to boost their confidence and positive outlook.

“I did makeup for the first time when I was 16, for my mother, and she loved it, so that’s how I got interested in this career – my brothers a makeup artist too,” Sato said.

“My grandfather and my mother are painters, and for me, makeup is about creating the whole picture, just the same. You have to balance the overall look. Even if you’re not that good with the eyes, you can do beautiful lips or cheeks, and that’s just fine.”

The concept at Three entails respecting the blessings of the natural world and seeing oneself as part of nature. Facial expressions become harmonised and neutral colours and textures created by brand director Rie Omoto bring out that natural beauty effortlessly.

Epic Mini Dash comes in beach shades – “Phi Phi Paradise Rose” and “Railay Red”.

The fresh cheek tint resembles whipped gel oil and enhances the radiance of the skin with an airy sense of clarity. It’s as though the skin is coloured from the inside.

Users apply a small amount to the cheeks and gently rub the highest part of the cheek with the ball of a finger to create an expression full of solidity and a feeling of vitality. It can be also used as lip colour for a soft matte finish.

The Refined Control Lip Pencil offers complete control of the lip line and colour. With a tip of exactly the right thickness, the handy, smooth-textured pencil can be used as both a lip liner and a lip base.

Various botanical oils and natural fats and oils are used for long-lasting effects that avoid “lipstick bleed” and keep the line in place for hours.

There are two shades. “Romance in Phuket” is a pure, fresh, pink mix with a coral orange tone, and the smoky cherry-red tone of “Temple of Dawn” creates a confident smile.

“It’s important that women project a sense of comfort while wearing makeup,” Sato said. “They need to create the ideal canvas to show off their lipstick colour to perfection.

“For men nowadays, too, it’s very common to wear makeup, but many aren’t very good at it. |I advise men to do make up |with just a gentle touch of |concealer and translucent |powder. It will make them look smart and ensure a clean complexion.”

Furla unfurls its Asian strategy

The Italian manufacturer of leather bags and accessories is looking to grow in Thailand

AS ONE of the major global leathergoods marketers, Italian brand Furla is turning heads with a terrific autumn-winter collection, and chief executive Alberto Comerlengo was more than happy to tell The Nation all about it in a recent email interview.

The company’s name derives from that of its founder, Aldo Furlanetto, who got the ball rolling in Bologna in 1927. The “ball” began with and has maintained ever since superb craftsmanship and beautiful, innovative design.

Talk to experts about Furla and they’ll invariably mention these traits, the high quality, the colourful creativity and the contemporary Italian sensibility.

We asked Comerlengo about the firm’s positioning in Southeast Asia and future plans.

“The Asia-Pacific market is growing and healthy,” he said. “In the first half of 2017, we registered impressive growth of 63 per cent in the region.

“In Thailand in August we kicked off a new partnership with the Pacifica Group, which has an extensive retail network and an effective marketing strategy. We aim to make the brand stronger and grow in the competitive accessories sector in Thailand.”

WHAT ARE THE CHARACTERISTICS THAT MAKE FURLA STAND OUT FROM OTHER ITALIAN BRANDS?

Furla is Italian in history and in spirit. It’s the only brand in the fast-growing premium segment that gives customers an authentic Italian experience. There is alchemy to it – the special links in design, quality leather, supply chain and quality control.

WHAT’S YOUR BUSINESS STRATEGY IN ASIA?

We have 253 stores in the Asia-Pacific region and now we have an expanded distribution strategy in place that’s set to continue throughout this year.

In Europe the brand has a strong retail footprint, so there we tend to increase awareness. But the Asian market has huge potential and here the objective is to establish experience and credibility.

TELL US ABOUT FUTURE DIRECTIONS.

To me personally, Furla stands for quality, creativity, joyfulness and the Italian lifestyle. In the future we plan to focus on a dynamic storytelling approach, which implies a shift in content-development strategy, to be more digital-driven in order to obtain substantial influence in the digital and e-commerce areas. Millennials are an important consumer segment for Furla, and they’re highly digital-savvy.

WHAT DO YOU THINK ABOUT THE RISING TREND IN SUSTAINABLE BRANDS? HOW CAN A HIGH-END FASHION BRAND CONTRIBUTE TO SOCIAL SUSTAINABILITY?

Sustainability is the future that brands can no longer ignore. Furla is working on that step by step.

In 2008, Fondazione Furla was founded to promote the longstanding cultural relationship between Furla and contemporary art. Its reputation for supporting young Italian artists while developing, exploring and exchanging new creative channels and innovative projects is praised across the board.

Last year Furla also implemented a welfare plan to take care of our employees.

WHAT PERCENTAGE GROWTH DO YOU EXPECT IN SALES IN 2018?

It’s too early to say. With out success in first half of 2017, our intent is to continue growing organically through both diversified product categories and in our geographical footprint. That’s been a driving force behind the company’s success. We recently opened boutiques in London and Amsterdam and more will open by the end of 2017 in Hong Kong, Beijing, Tokyo and Prague.

THE NEW COLLECTION SPANS FIVE SERIES.

The Furla Like bag is meant to evoke the New York skyscrapers of the 1930s. Springing from the Jazz Age and the transformation of the modern workplace, and with both a shoulder strap and a handle, it features two practical zippered compartments and an angular, geometric appeal that feels creative and feminine.

The bucket-shaped Furla Caos suggests the soul of the ’70s divided between disco and folk music. The capacious, easy-going bag is available in two versions, one evocative of nightclubs in London and Berlin, all black in quilted “Popstar” calfskin, and the other also black but rigged for the shoulder and covered in Oasis leather fringe.

The Furla Hashtag shoulder-strap bag has rounded lines but unexpectedly square sides on the flap. Its strength is in its contrasting styles and high-impact details. The main pouch has three-dimensional black-on-black decorations, the strap is large and sturdy, and there is a golden buckle on the white flap. Its modest dimensions make it a great accessory for everyday use.

The Furla Blogger has the simple, youthful shape of the carryall bowling bags of the ’50s, with double handles and a strap. The bag evokes the preppy style of those years in its colour palette, too. It’s available in Oasis leather in black, red or dark green, with the lateral and upper bands around the zipper in white for contrast.

The Furla Scoop borrows two of the most typical elements of bags in the ’40s – accordion sides on the main compartment and a rectangular flap – and modernises them in python-printed calfskin leather.

In the version with a black base, the Scoop has an entirely reptilian flap, while in a second version with the base in black and the flap in cream, the python print appears as a decorative insert that frames the golden metal buckle.
