A group of hackers that have links to the North Korea government used servers in Thailand to carry out large scale cyber espionage and malware attacks, according to a new report.

Earlier this week, cyber security firm McAfee released new details on the global hacking campaign, dubbed Operation GhostSecret.

Researchers say the campaigns were carried out to steal important information from critical infrastructure, telecommunications, finance, health care and entertainment organisations from all over the world.

“The campaign is extremely complicated, leveraging a number of implants to steal information from infected systems and is intricately designed to evade detection and deceive forensic investigators,” McAfee wrote in a post on Tuesday.

McAfee says the same group are responsible for carrying out large scale attacks on Turkish banks last month and said that there were many similarities between the attacks and those used on Sony Pictures in 2014.

But the attacks on Turkish financial institutions, which were carried out between March 14 and 18 this year, were only a fraction of the operation, which eventually spanned 17 countries, including Thailand, the United States, Germany, Japan, China and Australia.

The tools used in the attacks were the same as those used by Hidden Cobra, which the United States say are state sponsored hackers from North Korea. As well as being named as those responsible for the huge hack on Sony Pictures, Hidden Cobra are also thought to have carried out the Wanna Cry malware attack that crippled computers and networks around the world last May.

Meanwhile on Wednesday, Thailand’s Computer Emergency Response Team (ThaiCERT) announced that it had seized the servers used in the global hacking campaign and that they had been handed over to law enforcement agencies.

According to McAfee one of the servers was located at Thammasat University in Bangkok.

“This server resides at Thammasat University in Bangkok, Thailand. The same entity hosted the control server for the Sony Pictures implants”, McAfee said in its report.

“This SSL certificate has been used in Hidden Cobra operations since the Sony Pictures attack. Analyzing this certificate reveals additional control servers using the same PolarSSL certificate.

“Further analysis of McAfee telemetry data reveals several IP addresses that are active, two within the same network block as the 2018 Destover-like implant.”

“McAfee is working with Thai government authorities to take down the control server infrastructure of Operation GhostSecret, while preserving the systems involved for further analysis by law enforcement authorities”.

“By creating and maintaining partnerships with worldwide law enforcement, McAfee demonstrates that we are stronger together”.

Decline in cyber attacks on finance sector in APAC

Tech April 27, 2018 01:00

By The Nation

NTT Security, the specialised security company for NTT Group, has published its 2018 Global Threat Intelligence Report (GTIR) stating the number of attacks on the finance sector in APAC has dropped from 46 per cent to 26 per cent compared to the previous year, along with three new industries that made it to the top five attacked industries – technology, retail and government.

NTT Security summarises data from over 6.1 trillion logs and 150 million attacks for the 2018 GTIR, which analyses global threat trends based on log, event, attack, incident and vulnerability data from the NTT Group’s operating companies. It highlights the latest ransomware, phishing and DDoS attack trends in demonstrating the evolving threat landscape faced by global organisations.

In APAC, the report shows the attacks targeting the finance sector have continued to be a threat despite a 20 per cent drop versus a year ago. On the other hand, attacks targeting the manufacturing sector have significantly decreased to seven per cent from 32 per cent in the same period last year. Even though the APAC region tends to have a strong representation in the manufacturing sector, with China and Korea being two of the world’s leading manufacturing countries, the sector is no longer listed among the top five most attacked industries in this year’s report.

Attacks against retail and education sectors were at 15 per cent and 18 per cent respectively. Education, in particular, saw a dramatic jump from three per cent to 18 per cent in attack volume, alongside technology industry from five per cent to 16 per cent. Technology was the only sector to appear in the top five most attacked industries in every geographic region (Americas, APAC, EMEA and Japan, as well as globally).

Though most regions saw a decrease in attacks against government targets, APAC actually had a seven per cent increase, from six per cent to 13 per cent.

Overall, the top five most targeted industries in APAC, namely finance, education, technology, retail and government, comprised 88 per cent of all attacks last year. This suggests that attackers spread out attacks more evenly across a focused set of industries.

In APAC, viruses and worms accounted for 66 per cent of malware, nearly three times the global percentage of 23 per cent. Whilst the report shows an increasing trend of ransomware nearly in every region, it played a role in only 2 per cent of malware-related attacks for APAC targets.

Conversely, brute force attacks accounted for 26 per cent of all attacks in the region, but were ranked the twelfth most common attack type in both the Americas and EMEA.

WhatsApp bans European under-16s from using app

WhatsApp has raised its minimum age for users in the European Union to 16 years, as the bloc prepares for a new online privacy law to come into force next month.

In an update to its terms of service on Wednesday, WhatsApp said the minimum age for users outside the EU was still 13 years.

“If you live in a country in the European region, you must be at least 16 years old to use our services,” WhatsApp said on its website.

In its blog, the app said it was preparing for the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), which is set to come into force on May 25.

Under the law, children must be 16 years of age in order to give consent for their personal data to be processed.

“Next month, the European Union is updating its privacy laws to require greater transparency for how people’s information is used online,” WhatsApp said.

“WhatsApp is updating our terms of service and privacy policy where the law known as the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) is taking effect,” it added.

However the company did not say how it plans to enforce the change in the rules.

Facebook, which owns WhatsApp, has also pledged to change how it handles private data to comply with the forthcoming law change.

But unlike WhatsApp, which will only apply the new law to its European users, Facebook plans on rolling out changes for its users worldwide.

The change in the European law was already planned prior to the recent privacy scandal involving Facebook and Cambridge Analytica.

But the scandal raised the alarm for internet users around the world over issues relating to online privacy, in an unprecedented way.

It has also prompted social media giants to go all out in a bid to assuage users’ fears of their data falling into the wrong hands.

Twitter momentum grows with second straight profit quarter

Twitter momentum grows with second straight profit quarter

Tech April 26, 2018 06:54

By Agence France-Presse
Washington

Twitter reported its second consecutive quarterly profit Wednesday in a positive sign for the short messaging service after years in the red.

The San Francisco-based social network earned $61 million in the first three months of the year, boosted by strong growth in advertising revenue and modest gains in users.

First quarter revenues rose 21 percent from a year ago to $665 million, and the key figure of monthly active users increased by six million from late last year to 336 million.

Shares reversed pre-market gains and fell 3.9 percent to $29.25 in morning trade on Wall Street following the stronger-than-expected numbers.

Twitter stock has nearly doubled from a year ago, when concerns were high over the future of the service.

Chief executive Jack Dorsey said the recent changes made to the service have helped “engagement,” a measure of how often people turn to the social network and how long they stay.

“We continued our work to make it easier for people to follow topics, interest and events on Twitter with new curated timelines of tweets around breaking news and sports events at the top of the home timeline, and launched new product features, including video time stamps and bookmarks to help people discover and discuss what’s happening,” Dorsey told a conference call.

Advertising remained the key driver of revenue growth for Twitter, rising 21 percent from a year ago to $575 million.

Ned Segal, Twitter’s chief financial officer, said the company saw “growth across all major products and geographies in the first quarter.”

Beyond the core

The move into profitability is an important achievement for Twitter, which has lost money consistently since its public offering, sparking speculation over whether it needed to sell itself to keep operating.

While Twitter has built a solid core base of celebrities, politicians and journalists, it has failed to match the broader appeal of Facebook and other social platforms, hurting its ability to bring in ad revenues.

The network has stepped up efforts to boost its user base and engagement, adding streaming video partnerships, doubling the character limit on tweets to 280 and making it easier to create “tweetstorms” by stringing messaging together.

It has also moved largely to an algorithmic-based feed using artificial intelligence that aims to deliver more tweets that drive interest and engagement.

Brian Wieser of Pivotal Research Group said the report showed “spectacular revenue growth driven by international activity,” offsetting “tepid US results.”

Wieser said Twitter is showing movement toward a “durable” platform but sees broader growth more difficult.

“As with Facebook, investor sentiment around Twitter will undoubtedly swing wildly around recent momentum in any given direction, making the stock itself riskier than the company in many ways,” Wieser said in a research note.

More positive outlook

Debra Aho Williamson at research firm eMarketer said Twitter’s ad performance has been improving and predicts the platform will take a 1.6 percent share of display ad revenue worldwide

She said eMarketer has increased its revenue estimates for Twitter “because we are seeing strong performance in its non-US mobile ad business, as well as better performance for direct response and video advertising.”

Williamson added that Twitter’s deal to stream content from the FIFA World Cup is likely to “create a more positive outlook for the company.”

The earnings report comes with social networks under fire over protecting private user data and curbing so-called hate speech, fake accounts manipulating public debate and incitement of violence on their platforms.

Facebook, which was set to report earnings later Wednesday, has been under fire over the hijacking of private data on some 87 million users by a consulting firm linked to Donald Trump’s 2016 campaign.

Dorsey said that at Twitter, “we believe privacy is a fundamental right for everyone,” and that he does not anticipate the same kinds of issues as Facebook.

“We are different from our peers in that Twitter is public and… all of our data is out in the public, out in the open, and our data business just organizes that public data in real-time to make it easier for brands, researchers and organizations to utilize it,” Dorsey said.

“We do not provide any personal identifiable information that’s not already visible on the service.”

Alibaba announces AI deal with Audi, Daimler and Volvo

Tech April 25, 2018 14:59

By China Daily/ANN

BEIJING – Alibaba announced three partnerships with leading carmakers on artificial intelligence-backed connected vehicle services.

Alibaba Group Holding Ltd announced three partnerships on Monday with leading carmakers on artificial intelligence-backed connected vehicle services, cementing its commitment to the auto sector.

Under the cooperation, owners of Daimler, Audi and Volvo cars in China will be able to remotely access information about their vehicles, such as location, engine status and fuel checks, using Alibaba’s voice assistant service.

AliGenie, the AI platform powering Alibaba’s iconic smart speaker Tmall Genie, enables voice enquiries that unlock doors and turn on air conditioning before the driver even reaches the car, said Chen Lijuan, head of Alibaba AI Labs, an in-house AI research unit.

The tie-up will also help enrich the in-car infotainment portfolio based on Alibaba’s content offerings from access to video site Youku and music streaming service Xiami.

“You can check the best route via Tmall Genie at home and send that information to your car,” Chen told a media event in Beijing, citing the example of turning on the car’s heater in winter as soon as the owner wakes up.

Ideally, the world will inch even closer to a future where people can control appliances such as refrigerators and washing machines from inside their car, she noted.

According to Alibaba, the first batch of such cars will be available in June, including selected Mercedes-Benz and Volvo models. For instance, Volvo’s three current models, XC90, S90 and XC60, will integrate the AI-powered voice command feature through soft-ware upgrades in future rollouts.

Partnerships with other automakers will follow soon, Chen said.

Through the move, the tech powerhouse is scheduled to open up its ability on the so-called AI+Car solution from September.

Chinese customers are more willing to embrace new technologies and functionalities compared with consumers elsewhere, fuelling momentum for developing smart interconnected cars, said Heinz-Willi Vassen, R&D director at Audi China.

Electrification, intelligence and interconnectedness are the big trends in the automotive industry, propelling internet companies such as Alibaba to leverage their frontier technologies to help carmakers adapt to these trends, said Neil Wang, president of consultancy Frost & Sullivan in China.

“AliGenie’s application in intelligent transportation is a clear demonstration of how it combines the deep understanding of Chinese customers, the expertise in a number of technologies, with the products and solutions tailored to real-life needs,” he said.

Facial recognition system in Japan to screen departing foreign visitors

Facial recognition system in Japan to screen departing foreign visitors

TOKYO – The Justice Ministry plans to expand the use of a facial recognition system at Haneda Airport to four other airports.

The system, which currently screens the faces of Japanese nationals returning home, will also be used for foreigners leaving Japan from fiscal 2019. It allows a single immigration officer to oversee multiple stations, freeing other officers to screen foreigners for entry and deal with suspicious persons.

The ministry hopes through the system to strengthen antiterrorism measures for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics.

Under the system, the photograph stored on a passport’s IC chip and photos taken at immigration counters are checked by computers to confirm whether both photos are of the same person.

Travelers place their passports over an electronic reader and position their faces close to an attached camera. If a match is determined, entry or exit is approved.

Screenings take about 15 seconds, and the system can adapt to age-related changes. “There would be almost no cases of misidentification,” a senior ministry official said.

The government began using the system in October last year for reentry screenings of Japanese citizens at Haneda. Three machines handle about 20 percent of all returnees, or about 2,600 people, every day at the airport.

This fiscal year, the government plans to start installing a total of 134 more machines at Haneda, Narita, Kansai, Chubu and Fukuoka airports. From next fiscal year, the machines would also be used to screen foreigners leaving the country at the five airports.

In conventional entry and exit screenings, an immigration officer usually confirms a person’s identity through an interview-style interaction.

With facial recognition, one immigration officer could oversee the system on several machines, shortening the time required for screenings. It is estimated that by operating 137 machines, dozens of officials will be able to undertake different duties.

Medical exam data on 50 million patients to be integrated

Medical exam data on 50 million patients to be integrated

Tech April 25, 2018 14:50

By The Japan News/ANN

TOKYO – The government plans to build the world’s largest medical examination database, collating records of medical exams and health checkups held by domestic medical institutions by around 2023, The Yomiuri Shimbun has learned.

The government aims to create the big data set, comprised of anonymized information on more than 50 million people, to develop new medicines and improve inspection technologies using artificial intelligence (AI), among other purposes, according to sources.

At present, because respective medical institutions anonymize the data they collect, data from patients with multiple diseases are analyzed separately. However, with the envisaged database, all the medical data of a single patient would be integrated, making it possible to analyze conditions that are believed to have strong correlations, such as periodontal disease and diabetes, in an integrated manner and make use of the analyses for treatment.

The database could be useful not only for new drug development but also for investigating the side effects of medicines. Early detection of diseases could become possible by retrieving masses of endoscopic images related to a specific disease from the database and using AI to analyze the images.

The database will be created, as early as the end of this year, by an entity to be designated by the government based on the medical care big data law (see below), which will go into effect in May.

In the beginning, the database will contain information on about 3 million people and the volume of data will increase to cover 50 million people by 2023, the sources said.

The government plans to designate, as early as this autumn, an incorporated body consisting of researchers at universities and others to create the database.

The designated organization is expected to anonymize information collected from medical institutions, schools, health insurance associations and others, offering the information to pharmaceutical companies and research institutions for a fee.

According to the government, while there are overseas databases collecting information such as medical examination results, they only cover information of several million people. Japan is said to have an edge over other countries in the field because its medical institutions have abundant information thanks to the Japanese universal health insurance coverage system.

The government aims to use the database to facilitate the development of advanced technologies and create new industries in the medical field.

However, many people will oppose providing third parties with information directly related to the privacy of individuals. Therefore, the government intends to decide at a Cabinet meeting, as early as the end of this month, a basic policy for the medical care big data law to provide safety measures for the database and other issues.

In the basic policy, the government will ask medical institutions to have first-visit patients confirm whether they agree to provide their information to third parties. It also plans to require medical institutions to alert patients to the fact that they can refuse the provision of their information even after giving consent.

■ Medical care big data law

The law regarding anonymized medical data to contribute to research and development in the medical field was established for the purpose of anonymizing medical care information such as medical histories, medication histories and examination results of individuals to allow third parties to utilize the data.

$35 mn penalty for not telling investors of Yahoo hack

Tech April 25, 2018 06:47

San Francisco

US securities regulators on Tuesday announced that Altaba will pay a $35 million penalty for not telling them hackers had stolen Yahoo’s “crown jewels.”

The 2014 breach blamed on Russian hackers affected hundreds of millions of Yahoo accounts, with stolen ‘crown jewel’ data including usernames, email addresses, phone numbers, birthdates, encrypted passwords, and security questions, according to the Securities and Exchange Commission.

While Yahoo discovered the data breach quickly, it remained mum about it until more than two years later when it was being acquired by telecom giant Verizon Communications, the SEC case maintained.

“Yahoo’s failure to have controls and procedures in place to assess its cyber-disclosure obligations ended up leaving its investors totally in the dark about a massive data breach,” SEC San Francisco regional office director Jina Choi said in a release.

“Public companies should have controls and procedures in place to properly evaluate cyber incidents and disclose material information to investors.”

Although Yahoo is no longer an independent company — its financial holdings are in a separate company now called Altaba — Verizon has continued to operate the Yahoo brand, including its email service and a variety of news and entertainment websites.

Oath includes the Yahoo internet operations along with those of another former internet star, AOL.

In addition to the 2014 breach, a hack the previous year affected all three billion Yahoo user accounts, according to findings disclosed by Verizon after the acquisition.

The US Justice Department charged two Russian intelligence operatives and a pair of hackers over one of the attacks, which had apparent twin goals of espionage and financial gain.

Yahoo, which was once one of the leading internet firms, sold its main online operations to Verizon last year in a deal valued at $4.48 billion.

The purchase price was cut following revelations of the two major data breaches at Yahoo.

THAI OPPO will invest around Bt300 million this year to improve its after sale services nationwide, in order to lessen customers’ waiting time to just an hour, said Chanon Jirayukul, executive vice president of Thai Oppo said.

It has around 40 service centers nationwide.

The firm has just launched Oppo F7, a mid-range smart phone, featuring a 25MP front camera and AI Beaty 2.0 for a better and more natural look and an enhanced selfie experience.

It also comes with a two-year warranty and will go on sales today.

The new smart phone, in solar red or diamond black, is priced at Bt10,990. Oppo has named “Yaya Urasaya Sperbund” as the presenter of the stylish phone. It will go on a roadshow up country in promotion of the new model.

The firm also plans to launch a new flagship smart phone in the premium market by the end of the year. The new product will be priced at more than Bt15,000 .

According to International Data Corporation (IDC) Quarterly Mobile Phone Tracker, total smartphone shipments in the emerging Southeast Asia (SEA) region recorded approximately 100 million units in 2017, declining by less than 1 per cent year-on –year. IDC categorises Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Thailand, and Vietnam as the emerging markets in Souteast |Asia.

In 2018, local vendors will continue to feel the impact as end-users gradually shift their preference to more popular brands and are more willing to invest in upgrading to larger screen mid-range smartphones.

Most would soon be equipped with enticing features such as dual cameras, thin bezels, on-device Artificial Intelligence (AI) among others.

To stay competitive, local vendors should ship smartphones with some of these features and introduce devices that come with Android Oreo ‘Go edition’ while keeping the prices affordable to suit their local target segments,” said Jensen Ooi, senior market analyst, Client Devices, IDC Asean.
