Hollywood stars, musicians and sporting icons from Britain and the United States took their places among the 600 guests the historic chapel in Windsor Castle, along with Harry’s ex-girlfriends.

Winfrey, the US talk show queen, was seen strolling through the castle grounds ahead of the service.

Hollywood actor Clooney, wearing a grey suit, walked arm in arm with his campaigning lawyer wife Amal, who wore a yellow dress and matching hat.

England football icon David Beckham and his fashion designer wife Victoria, the former Spice Girls singer, waved to the thousands of fans who had been invited into the castle grounds to see the stars go in.

Beckham, sporting short hair and shades, posed for a selfie with a fan on the way inside.

Pop star Elton John, a close friend of Harry’s late mother Diana, who memorably performed an emotional version of “Candle in the Wind” at her funeral in 1997, was seen chatting to guests.

He reportedly cancelled shows in Las Vegas to attend.

Markle made her name in the US legal drama “Suits” and several of her co-stars were in the church, as was US tennis great Serena Williams.

He read the poem “Invictus” at the opening ceremony of the inaugural 2014 Invictus Games in London, the Olympic-style multi-sport event for wounded veterans founded by Harry.

Singer James Blunt, famous for his hit “You’re Beautiful” and like Harry an army veteran, took his place in the pews. He performed at the 2016 Orlando Invictus Games.

British actor Tom Hardy, who starred in “The Revenant” and Batman film “The Dark Knight Rises” was there, along with Hollywood actress Carey Mulligan with her musician husband Marcus Mumford.

Britain’s James Corden, a top talkshow presenter in the United States, was in attendance, as was soul singer Joss Stone.

Harry’s close friend Prince Seeiso of Lesotho, with whom he established a charity helping the country’s AIDS orphans, was in the front rows.

But, smiling and waving, she was seen entering the church alone on Saturday.

Johnny Wilkinson, the star of England’s 2003 Rugby World Cup-winning team, and fellow England rugby star James Haskell were seen going inside.

Following the service, Queen Elizabeth II will host a lunch in the castle’s St. George’s Hall for the 600 guests.

Politicians have been left off the guest list, meaning there was no invite for US President Donald Trump or British Prime Minister Theresa May.

One exception was former prime minister John Major, who was the legal guardian for Princes William and Harry after their mother’s death.

“The Queen has today been pleased to confer a dukedom on Prince Henry of Wales. His titles will be Duke of Sussex, Earl of Dumbarton and Baron Kilkeel,” it said in a statement.

“Prince Harry thus becomes His Royal Highness The Duke of Sussex, and Ms. Meghan Markle on marriage will become Her Royal Highness The Duchess of Sussex.”

A dukedom is the highest rank in the British peerage. It is traditional to give royal sons titles reflecting the three historic realms — England, Scotland and Ireland — that made up the United Kingdom.

“It’s like a fairytale” gasped one tourist as the first train from London pulled into the station — rebranded as “Harry and Meghan Central” for the day — in the shadow of Windsor Castle, where the wedding will take place.

Throngs stepping off the train under cloudless skies were met by armed police, sniffer dogs and airport-style security scanners before hitting a wall of thousands of royal fanatics lining the procession route, many of whom had braved the cold and camped overnight.

“It was so cold last night, I’ve not had one wink of sleep, but nobody gave up,” pensioner Maureen Hayward, who arrived on Friday afternoon to stake out a spot, told AFP.

“It was good, it was cold, but we all had a few drinks, tried to have a sleep but couldn’t,” said Pippa Natschall, who had travelled from Australia for the event.

“There’s only one toilet in the village, which was worse, there was a big line,” added the 46-year-old, who had marked out her camp with Union Jack flags.

Red, white and blue bunting festooned the quaint streets, with people dressing up for the special day.

Two Canadians wore maple leaf onesies, one man dressed as Mr. Bean was entertaining the crowds while others were dressed from head to foot in the British and American flags as a town crier barked out a congratulatory message.

The party started early for bleary-eyed fans on the first train from London’s Paddington station as crowds packed onto the platform, although in true British tradition, the trip was delayed on departure.

“I woke up at four in the morning when I was 12 to watch Princess Diana get married and I’ve been hooked ever since,” Heather Miller, 49, from Colorado, told AFP as she waited for the train, wearing a Harry and Meghan t-shirt and a fascinator.

She was accompanied by friend Karen Wallace, 53, originally from Chicago, and Miller’s reluctant husband.

“After the week she’s had she needs some support,” she added.

“I think her half-siblings are so jealous — they want their 15 minutes of fame.”

The wedding plans were thrown into disarray on Thursday when it was confirmed that Markle’s father Thomas would not attend due to health problems after becoming caught up in a paparazzi fiasco.

Her half-siblings also caused a stir with unflattering comments about the bride-to-be.

The crowd in Windsor was expected to swell to around 100,000, with at least 5,000 journalists, according to Thames Valley Police.

Some of the most fanatical supporters camped for days, watching as the security forces moved in to turn the picturesque town into an impregnable fortress.

Huge barriers have been hauled into place to prevent a vehicle attack and many roads are now closed in the town of 30,000 inhabitants, 30 kilometres (19 miles) west of London.

Snipers have also taken up positions on roofs.

Early arrivers got a taste of the drama on Thursday, when Meghan and Harry arrived for a dress rehearsal, with the couple making a brief appearance, surprising crowds milling around the rehearsal route by pulling in to Windsor Castle via the famous Long Walk promenade.

Retired nurse Cynthia Osborne travelled from her home in Cardiff, Wales to catch the train, wearing an array of Union Jack branded clothing and a Welsh dragon hat.

As she waited for the train, an American visitor asked her for a photograph.

“I think they’re a little bit envious of us, not just the Americans but the Europeans too,” she said.

“I think this brings people together.”

The circus arriving in town was also good news for local retailers, many of whom had set up tables outside their shops, covered with Union Jack towels and flags, and Harry and Meghan t-shirts.

“It’s going to be a lovely day, but I don’t think I’ll be able to retire” on the profits, joked shopkeeper Irshan, who had entered the party spirit with a Union Jack turban.

The ceremony at St. George’s Chapel in Windsor Castle will be a traditional Church of England service, but US TV star Markle has ensured that her marriage into British royalty will have a strong American flavour.

After a firebrand US preacher revs up the sermon, The Kingdom Choir will sing “Stand By Me”, the stirring, soulful tune released by Ben E. King in 1961, that topped the charts in both the United States and Britain.

And the service will have further touching moments for Harry, being supported by his best man, brother Prince William.

The last hymn before the newlyweds leave will be “Guide me, O thou great redeemer” — the last hymn sung at their mother Diana, princess of Wales’s funeral in 1997.

The bride and groom have put their own modern twist on their big day.

The music, the springtime flowers and lack of political bigwigs show they have set the tone and feel of the event, within the framework of a classic Anglican wedding ceremony.

Printed before Markle’s father Thomas definitively pulled out on Thursday having undergone heart surgery, the order of service says he will walk her down the aisle.

Harry’s father Prince Charles, the Prince of Wales, will fill in.

‘Stand By Me’

David Conner, the Dean of Windsor who is the chapel’s senior cleric, will give the introduction.

“The gift of marriage brings husband and wife together in the delight and tenderness of sexual union and joyful commitment,” he was to say.

Conner will ask “anyone present who knows a reason why these persons may not lawfully marry, to declare it now”.

Assuming no objections, Justin Welby, the Archbishop of Canterbury who is the Church of England’s spiritual leader, will oversee the declarations.

The couple will pledge to love, comfort, honour and protect each other, both using the answer “I will”.

Diana’s sister Jane Fellowes will read from the Song of Solomon, before Michael Curry, the head of the Anglican church in the United States, gives the ceremony’s main speech.

A lively, animated speaker in the US tradition, the primate of the Episcopal Church will deliver his own address on the nature and duties of marriage.

The church’s first African-American leader, Curry could be the star turn in a setting more used to rigid formality.

He is immediately followed by “Stand By Me”, the prelude to the couple exchanging their vows.

The couple have chosen vows using modern rather than traditional language, meaning they will say “you” instead of “thee” and “thou”.

They have perhaps noted how several previous brides have muddled up the royals’ multiple given names, so Markle will refer to the groom as simply Harry rather than Henry Charles Albert David.

Till death us do part

And like recent royal brides, Markle will not vow to “obey” her husband.

They will pledge to take each other “to have and to hold from this day forward; for better, for worse, for richer, for poorer, in sickness and in health, to love and to cherish, till death us do part.”

Welby then declares them legally wed, saying: “I therefore proclaim that they are husband and wife.”

The prayers will be read by the Jamaican-born Reverend Rose Hudson-Wilkin, Queen Elizabeth II’s chaplain, and Archbishop Anba Angaelos, the head of the Coptic church in Britain.

“Guide me, O thou great redeemer”, the final hymn, was also the first hymn sung at the 2011 wedding of William and his wife Kate.

The song is effectively a Welsh national hymn and is often sung at rugby internationals. It will be seen as a nod to Harry’s 33 years as, formally, Prince Henry of Wales.

The couple then go to sign the marriage register.

When they return, the service will end with the national anthem, “God Save the Queen”.

Harry will bow to Queen Elizabeth and his bride will curtsey as they leave, stepping out onto the church’s West Steps to greet the world as husband and wife.
